Neighbor’s Corner By Marisol Fontanez

Marisol Fontanez submitted the poem below which was written by a friend of hers, Olivia Armstrong. With her submission, Marisol described Olivia as “my friend, ex-co-worker and a reverend.” She believes her friend’s poem was inspired by the following quote.

“You are never too old to set another goal or dream a new dream.” – a famous quote, often attributed to C.S. Lewis.

Never Too Old

You’re never too old To have a goal…

You’re never too old To want to live

You’re never too old To want to give

You can make a choice and do with that positive voice…

You can still make a difference in this world.

Helping someone in need, is a great deed.

Still have a purpose Help keep a dream alive

You can still make a difference

If you believe You’re Never Too Old…

Ithaca College Partnership Events By Jessica Valdez Taves

Ithaca College has announced that the fall semester will commence on October 5, 2020. A committee has been formed to assess and plan for the return of students for a full academic semester, with the later start date. We are excited for students to return to our classes, labs and LONGVIEW!

For the time being, all Ithaca College courses, audits, programs and performances remain closed. Ithaca College will resume “remote teaching” throughout the summer sessions.

While we are saddened to not be able to see and work directly with the students, we are looking for innovative ways to stay connected during this time.

Longview Speaker Series: “Stumbling Into Empathy.” A Live Poetry Reading with Award Winning Poet and Professor Jerry Mirskin Professor Mirskin will read selections of his original poetry from three of his published collections and answer questions during and after the read-ing. Join us for our first ever ZOOM Speaker Series on Wednesday, June 16 at 10:45 a.m. in the auditorium.

Memoir Class with Professor Feltrin-Morris at Longview

Marella Feltrin-Morris, an Associate Professor of Italian at Ithaca College, who has taught or co-taught a short course in memoir writing at Longview for the past six years, will be doing so again this summer. This class offers tenants and residents the opportunity to work together to write your own story.

This class is ideally run in-person and as a small group. Professor Feltrin-Morris would like to encourage anyone who is interested in this memoir class to sign up and to indicate if you are able to take the class online (online class may be offered as an alternate). The hope is that visitation restrictions will be lifted and Professor Feltrin-Morris will be able to teach this class in-person later in the summer. In the event that in-person teaching is not possible, she is also considering offering this class as an online option.

If you are interested in signing up for the Memoir Class, please contact Bree Nash at Longview ([email protected] / 375-6335) or Jessica Valdez Taves at Ithaca College ([email protected] by June 3. Please check the IC bulletin board for updates on the Memoir Class and for a start date.

A Special Thank You! There is a new edition in the Interfaith Chapel! You may have already noticed a new elec-tronic piano and bench resting in the corner of the Chapel and wondered where it came from. The piano was generously gifted to Longview by a new tenant, Dick Tabor in loving

memory of his late wife, Reverend Eunice Tabor. Eunice was a long-time spiritual volunteer here at Longview.

Thank you, Dick for your gift to Longview!

Dear Longview community,

It’s hard to believe, but we are once again ap-proaching the summer solstice, the day of longest light in the northern hemisphere. In so many ways, it has been a very strange spring. Despite the spring equinox occurring at its earliest point in 124 years on March 19, the season of spring seemed to reflect the state of suspended animation we’ve inhabited over these last months during this pan-demic – much more an extension of winter’s hiber-nation than a springing forth of warmth and new life. The Farmer’s Almanac predicted a lingering winter across the Midwest, Great Lakes and New England back before the pandemic – and, indeed, record low temperatures, were recorded all over the northeastern United States, with frost reported as far south as the Caroli-nas over Mother’s Day weekend. A raw chill seemed to hang on and on in our part of the world, delaying trees from leafing out and slowing the growth of grass, as if the blooms, the blossoms, and the Earth herself were reflecting the general malaise, ambivalence, and unease of her inhabitants. And yet, finally, suddenly, here we are: the grass is green, at last, the soil is warming, and the flowers are blooming and fragrant. The leaves – so tightly furled for so long – are truly unfolding, and once again, the world around us has, miracu-lously, sprung to life, greening and filling with color day by day. By the time this ‘goes to press,’ I expect the lilacs will be casting their perfume upon the wind. And so, incredibly, the longest day approaches. Summer is almost here.

One of the blessings of the agonizingly slow, quarantine spring for my family has been the opportunity to watch what are known as the ‘spring ephemerals’ – the wild native plants –arrive: the May Apples, the Trilliums, the Trout Lilies and the Ramps have been so slow to emerge, and there have been so few other leaves, that it’s been possible to really notice each separate emergence and every slow creeping step from spring equinox to summer solstice over these last months. There’s a wisdom in that kind of forced Sabbath from the rush elders – such as all of you who make Longview your home – have to teach the world. Stopping, noticing, and paying attention: these are meditative, spiritual practices with po-tent possibility for this uneasy time. Many traditions have versions of this kind of practice. It’s often called ‘Mindfulness,’ and anyone can cultivate it as a skill, a habit of mind, and a quality of daily being. I have heard it said that love is the practice of paying attention, and this pandemic time has seemed to be a worldwide invitation to stop, to notice what is here with us, wherever we are, and to give it our attention – our love.

A dear friend of mine reflected recently on the aging process, on the way that he simply cannot make his body do the things it used to be able to effortlessly do. There was sadness in his voice, for the lost abilities of his body’s youth. He spoke of the difficult practice of having to sit still for long periods, to watch the weeds in his garden grow rather than pull them, to see all the tasks and chores that he once was able to rush through with compe-tence just go undone. He acknowledged his grief and frustration. After a time of sitting still and noticing that excruciating grief and frustration, he also grudgingly noted that perhaps he was building new skills that have something to do with endurance, patience, acceptance, resilience, resourcefulness, new ways of being himself, and new ways of relat-ing to the world. Surely these are wise skills that the world dearly needs.

It remains unclear how long our forced Sabbath will continue. As the wayward spring turns toward summer, the greening world is welcoming its people back into the stores and shops, the malls and parks. What wisdom will have come to us through this season? What wisdom will we carry with us into the next? One thing is certain: we have become terrifyingly aware of our microscopic connectivity, so perhaps one way we can be mindful and wise together is to continue to be aware of our inter-relatedness.

Such global astronomic events as the coming solstice can remind us of that profound and literal inter-connection, as the entire planet will experience this event at the same time. Since prehistory, the summer solstice has been seen as a significant time of year in many temperate climates of the Northern Hemisphere, and has been marked by festivals and rituals. Solstice is derived from the Latin words sol – sun -- and sistere -- to stand still or stop. On this solstice, the sun does appear to pause in the sky when it reaches its north-ernmost point, which will occur on June 20. That day, the Earth’s North Pole will have

its maximum tilt toward the sun, so the sun will reach its highest position in the sky with respect to the equa-tor. Within the Arctic Circle there will be continuous daylight, while the rest of the hemisphere will experi-ence the day with the longest period of daylight. Mean-while, the Southern hemisphere will experience the day of shortest length, and the Antarctic Circle will be in continuous darkness. Throughout time and across the globe, the ancients and the spiritual ancestors from tra-ditions as varied as the Vikings, the Chinese, the Native Americans, the Greeks, and the Celts have celebrated the summer solstice with gratitude for the fertile Earth, for the life-giving warmth of the sun, for agricultural

plenty and food, and for fire, among other observances. In our uneasy postmodern time, amidst great changes and uncertainties, let us be mind-ful of what connects us to each other, to what has come before us and to what will come after. May the wisdom we build together in this Sabbath turn us as one with gratitude toward all that is life-giving here and now. Spiritual Life Schedule for June

The past several months have been trying ones. We have mourned the passing of a num-ber of Longview friends and neighbors. Because we cannot gather in a large group for a formal celebration of their lives as is our custom, we will adapt to the circumstances in which we find ourselves, and find a new way to honor those who have passed. Begin-ning the week of June 15 until the end of the month, Remembrance Boards will be posted in the Auditorium for each of the people we remember and celebrate. Everyone in the Longview community is encouraged and welcomed to take some time to read through the posted eulogies and to add your own reflection as you feel led. Look for more information and posters as the month progresses.

Meanwhile, our modified Spiritual Life Schedule will continue in June. Our regular offer-ings include:
