The Addition of Mineral Inlays to Woodturnings

    Don Lindsley and Mike Josiah

LIWA is a chapter of the American Association of Woodturners. Our purpose is to foster a wider interest and appreciation of woodturning on Long Island and in the Metropolitan area. We generally meet on the third Saturday of each month from 9:00 AM until Noon at the Old Bethpage Village Restoration, Bethpage, L.I. See listing below for 2019 scheduled meetings:

LIWA NEWSLETTER JUNE 2019 Upcoming Meeting Schedule for 2019. All meetings run from 9:00 am to 12 noon *July 20 (Bob Urso) *August 24 (Picnic, Steve Fulgoni)

*The club will provide lunch at these meetings. Members are encouraged to bring breakfast items, drinks, salads, desserts, etc.

September 14 October 19 November 23 December 21 Current Club Officers President Les Hoffman (516) 431-2280 Vice President Peter Richichi (631) 218-2481 Secretary/Newsletter Barry Dutchen (516) 443-5342 Treasurer Joe DeMaio (516) 766-5189 Thanks to Bob Fentress for taking photos. Ed Note: I was not present at this meeting. All notes and images are courtesy: Les, Don and Bob The handouts used in this newsletter were emailed to all members in advance of the meeting. Summary of meeting The meeting was called to order by Les Hoffman, president. September 14 (at OBVR) is a very important meeting: S & T will include BoC boxes to be collected by Barry Saltzberg for delivery to Columbia/Presbyterian Hospital in Manhattan. Members, please sign up for the LI Fair on Sat 9/28 and Sun 9/29 from 10AM until 4PM (2 hours each). We need 3 people present for each 2-hour period to demonstrate simple woodturning and sell our TR Tree Project pieces.

Pieces submitted for sale must be clearly labelled with the retail price and member's name on a stick-on label or tag. All sales shall be recorded in a book and cash held by a member in the 2-4PM group.

Just as a reminder and for those who have not produced a Beads-Of-Courage box - the interior dimensions should be 5-6" in diameter and 4-5" in height. They should be finished with a non-toxic HARD finish that can be easily cleaned and shall be clearly labelled with the member's name on the bottom. Beads will be made available that require a 13/16D X 1/4 recess or you can burn or otherwise label the top Beads of Courage. Tops should be easily removable.

Les has been in touch with Michael Kehs, a professional woodturner and instructor from Quakerstown, PA. He will let Les know what date he is available to do a demo for us. Les will also see if he can do an all-day workshop on Friday or Sunday. If you wish to see Michael’s work: michaelkehswoodworks.com. Costs to be decided. Les believes that Michael gets $650 for the day, or $130 per person (for 5 people). Who would be interested? Which would be better - Friday or Sunday? Who wants to provide a workshop? We will need the midi-lathes and the minis.

Mentor Program: Recently, we had a misunderstanding by a new member regarding our mentor program. Barry, our program coordinator came up with an agreement which should be included in our New Member Handout. It defines the job of a mentor coordinator and also makes it clear that mentees must have access to a

New Members/Visitors Welcome to Tristan Gatano. Treasurer’s Report Joe reported a balance of $4996.00 Activity Announcements On May 22nd, eight members of the Executive Board met at Steve's house and discussed the following:

    1. The current by-laws need to be revised. Don will be meeting with Steve and Les to do that and the completed by-laws will be presented to the membership for approval.

    2. We need to formalize the progression of officers and may need to create the office of 2nd VP to take over the president’s job if the 1st VP is unable or unwilling. I will remain president until the end of 2019.

    3. We need a presentation committee to help set up and take down our equipment at every meeting

    4. We need a welcoming committee (Bob Widder has volunteered to head it) to develop a packet for new members, a hand-out for prospective members and to gather together for coffee prior to the regular meeting.

    5. Dues will remain $45 per year.

    6. We will again plan for an annual dinner for next April or May. Drinks will not be included in an attempt to keep costs down. Would anyone like to head the dinner committee?

    7. Steve will look into the possibility of having remote demonstrations at OBVR. Costs, technical requirements.8. We discussed the need for more frequent board meetings and agreed to have at least one more this year.

Minerals can be added to existing cavities (e.g., voids or checks) in the wood; or cavities can be created in

various shapes and sizes: turning, drilling, carving.

If you are going to turn a feature on the exterior or rim of a bowl, do so before hollowing the bowl. Even well-

cured wood will go out-of-round after hollowing!

I mostly use thin CA (cyanoacrylate glue) to fill the spaces between mineral grains and attach them to the wood.

  • 12

LIWA NEWSLETTER JUNE 2019 It’s best to seal the adjacent wood before adding minerals and CA. Otherwise the CA bleeds into the nearby wood pores. (Ugly!) (I use diluted lacquer for sealing, but dilute shellac should also work). Deep cavities are best (mostly) filled with colored tissue paper and CA. Doing so:

    1. Conserves expensive mineral material. 2. Can make it easier to turn the piece. 3. Actually makes the piece stronger. 4. Protects the gouge when you hollow out the bowl. (CA-infused tissue paper cuts like wood.)

Thank you to Don Lindsley and Mike Josiah
