We needed a global solution that could assist all users to be safe.
Short history of worker safety technology at S E Watero All field crews have live GPS tracking in their
vehicles (for 10+ years).
o About 7 years ago, SEW implemented a mobile phone ‘hotkey’ panic alarm linked to SCADA
o About 4 years ago, SEW built a Blackberry mobile phone app that tracked user locations
o Last year, Lone Worker for iPhone was created to combine and improve on the previous systems
Lone Worker app functionalityo SEW already standardized on iPhones (used already for SCADA and field
management apps)o Lone Worker app is integrated directly into SCADA (as well as email/SMS
options)o Uses the intelligence of the iPhone to detect worker motion (or lack thereof)o Flexible enough to have its configuration tailored to specific types of workers o GPS tracking, automatic alarming and fail-safe modes all built in.
How it works..o STEP 1: User that is about to go
into a “Lone Worker” situation starts up the app and logs in
o STEP 2: User’s login status sent to SCADA alarm screen to notify operators/management that a user has activated the app.
How it works..STEP 3: App will either be in MOTION mode (uses the accelerometer of
the iPhone) or HEALTH-CHECK mode (periodic update required from user to let system know they are OK). The chosen mode is determined by the user before starting the app.
After a period of no MOTION detected or failureby user to respond to periodic timer, loud alarmsounds on phone (giving the user a chance to say they are OK)
STEP 4: If the user fails to respond on the app, an urgent alarm is automatically sent from the phone to SCADA (monitored 24/7) as well as to personal email/SMS (optional).
Once an alarm is registered in SCADA, a procedure is instigated by the receiving staff member.
