Selecting the right rug is kind of like buying the right pair of shoes; the look gets us interested, but you’re only willing to purchase if it’s comfortable, durable, and fits well.

It all starts with the right size. Too small or too large and a room is going to appear awkward no matter how good looking the rug. We’ve divided our size guide (on the following pages) into three of the most common rooms for rugs: living room, din-ing room, and bedroom. If you define the dimensions of the room and keep at least 12-18 inches of bare floor exposed around the rug’s edges, this guide works for any room in the house.

After selecting the right size, it’s import-ant to consider how you’re going to keep your rug looking as good as new. Our

section on page 22 offers simple clean-ing and maintenance advice for any rug. We also recommend looking at page 23 for instruction on how to clean your rug based on its fiber. The best rug doesn’t just look great in and of itself - it en-hances and complements the entire look of your interior space. With that, it’s interesting how the size of a rug, not just its appearance, can influence the dynamic of a room.

For example, a 5x8 and an 8x10 rug may both fit nicely inside a living room, but the bigger rug actually makes the room ap-pear larger. Alternatively, a large area with various functions can use multiple rugs to identify and divide sections of the room. The next few pages serve as a guide for selecting a rug size for different rooms.

A larger rug can actually make your room appear larger. Just re-member to leave at least 18 inches of space between the wall and the edge of the rug.

A 5x8 rug will typically be placed under the coffee table, with the rest of the furniture placed off the rug.

An 8x10 rug allows for the furniture to be placed on top of the rug, or completely off of the rug. It depends on the other furniture and dimen-sions of the living room.

LIVING ROOMSelecting a rug for the living room usually comes down to three choices: 5x8, 8x10, or 9x12. Some size guides recommend that either all the furniture rests on the rug, or all the furniture, except for the coffee table, is placed completely off the rug. This will look fine, but one exception is the placement of the sofa. In our opinion, the front legs of a sofa can rest on the rug while the rest of the sofa is off the rug.

5x8 rugs are a great choice for smaller sized dining tables with 4 chairs.

Typically an 8x10 or 9x12 rug will work under a dining table with 6-8 chairs.

Selecting a rug size for the dining room is pretty straight forward —the legs of the chairs should sit comfortably on the rug, even when pulled out for people to sit. And remember, keep at least 18 inches of bare floor exposed on the edges of the rug.

5x8s are appropriate for the foot of the bed or along one of the sides.

Typically an 8x10 rug under-neath the bed works best. Or you can use a 5x8 along one of its sides.

For king size beds, typically an 8x10 or 9x12 works best. Or you can use runners along the sides with a larger rug at the foot of the bed.

BEDROOMFor bedrooms, there are generally two different approaches. Rugs can be placed around the bed, with runners flanking each side and a larger rug by the foot of the bed, or a rug can be placed hori-zontally under the bed with part of the rug exposed on each side.

5x8s have many applications in the bedroom. The rug can be placed horizontally near the top of the bed, vertically next to the side of the bed, or be placed horizontally near the top of the bed so only a portion of the rug is only exposed on the sides of the bed (better for 8x10s, shown on the room scene to the left).

9x12 rugs should be placed horizontally under a bed. A large portion of the rug will be exposed around the top and sides of the bed. Similar to living rooms, the larger rug makes the room appear larger.

Rotating a rug 180° every now and then can help prevent uneven wear and tear due to sunlight and foot traffic.

Use a rug pad! Rug pads prevent rugs from sliding on the floor, helping with safety but also longevity and premature aging of the rug.

There are rug pads for carpet and rug pads for hard-wood flooring.

RUG PADSVacuum regularly. Once a week is recommended, es-pecially in the first month.

Vacuum the rug in the direction of the pile. As an example, imagine the way you stroke a cat’s fur. Feel the surface of the rug before vacuuming to determine the direction of the pile.

Remove the beater bar or place at highest setting if appropriate for textured rugs like looped or braided rugs. Otherwise the vacuum may pull yarns loose.

Certain rugs like shags cannot be vacuumed except with a hand-held vacuum. Shake these rugs outside to loosen dirt and other particles.

Vacuum hooked rugs gently with a hand held vacuum. Avoid beater bar setting.

VACUUMING

Although the proper cleaning method depends on the fiber of the rug (found at the right), there are some common denominators to remember for nearly every fiber type:

Time is of the essence! Clean stains immediately and dry quickly with an absorbent white cloth.

Always work inward on the stain to prevent spreading. Do not rub in circles.

When in doubt, opt for a professional cleaning service.

It’s possible to keep your rug looking as beautiful as it did coming out of the package, but it’s going to require a little cleaning and maintenance: Follow this simple but important advice and your rug will stay looking as good as new.

CLEANING FIBERSProper cleaning is contextual, dependent on the

type of fiber used in the rug. A breakdown of proper cleaning on common fiber types are listed here.

Limit the amount of moisture used when treating a stain (never steam clean). Treat stains by dabbing a small amount of club soda or a cloth dampened with mild soap.

Shedding in wool rugs is com-pletely normal. Vacuum wool rugs at least once a week for the first few months. Use a common wool cleaning detergent or create one with a teaspoon of neutral detergent and a teaspoon of pure white vinegar combined with a quart of warm water. Absorb as much of the liquid before apply-ing the cleaning solution.

Avoid placing a viscose rug in a high-traffic area, as it does not take moisture and heavy foot traffic well. Professionally clean or use a spot cleaner with verylittle moisture.

Small rugs can be machine washed in warm water with a mild detergent. Larger rugs should be treated with a dry cleaning powder.

Use a dry cloth to blot the stain, then use water and pure vine-gar together to treat the stain. Be sure to wring out the cloth prior to applying the solution, as excessive moisture is not healthy for sisal rugs.

SISAL

Use a common cleaning detergent or create one with a teaspoon of neutral deter-gent and a teaspoon of pure white vinegar combined with a quart of warm water. Absorb as much of the liquid before applying the cleaning solution.

ACRYLIC

Polypropylene is one of the most stain resistant fibers as it resists moisture damage com-paratively well. Follow wool cleaning instructions.

POLYPROPYLENE

Polyester, like polypropylene, is one of the most stain resis-tant fibers as it resists mois-ture damage comparatively well. Follow wool cleaning instructions.

Durable yet soft, felted wool has a decidedly sub-stantial look and feel to it. Take our Tempo Collec-tion for instance. It seems ordinary at first, just ba-sic block patterns in solid colors, but one closer look (and feel) and you’ll discover what makes it special. The felted wool is hand woven into stripes of pan-els, which creates textural interest. What’s more, felted wool takes in color dyes particularly well.

This year we’re experimenting with fluffy textures that allude to some of today’s popular dresses and accessories. Case in point; the Eliza Shag. Yes the colors are spectacular but its defining characteristic is its ruffled texture. And because that collection is already selling well, we’ve got a few similarly fluffy rugs in production for later markets this year.

FELTED WOOL

FULL & FLUFFY

TEXTUREOftentimes a customer is designing a room and the rug is the last piece they select. Chances are, they already picked out some patterned pillows, elaborate artwork, and maybe upholstered a chair or two.

In this situation, a more subtle rug is in order. This year, we’ve introduced a number of textured rugs that earn notice without overpowering the room.

You’ve felt soft rugs before. But there’s a good chance you’ve never felt something quite like this; our microfiber polyester fiber is so soft it almost feels like you’re gliding across the rug. COLOROver the past few years the not-so-great economy had people buying more conservatively. For rugs, this generally meant safer neutral colors like gray and ivory. But now, as the economic forecast is looking a bit brighter, so are our color preferences. With that in mind, we’re introducing several vibrant options this year. Here are a few of our favorite.

One of our favorite color trends this year is classic blues. Our new Avanti, Sahara, and Wonder Collec-tion each have a design that pairs a shade of navy or estate blue with ivory. It’s a classic combination that conveys serenity and authority.
