Logo Design Project Step by Step Walkthrough

This post was originally published in 2008 The tips and techniques explained may be outdated.

A personal project I'm currently working on with a developer friend is a website calledmyNiteLife . As part of the overall design process one of the first jobs of the project was to

develop a logo and brand for the website, follow this step by step documentation of the whole process of the logo design from conception to completion.

I then booted up Adobe Illustrator to test out a range of type treatments, ranging from thin andmodern sans-serif to sexy and classy serifs.

The next stage was to develop various choices of type into draft logo concepts, basing someideas on the initial thoughts doodled out in the sketches. Planning ahead to the website I knewthat a fairly dark colour scheme would be used, therefore I developed the logos on a black

background to make sure they looked their best.

    4/193

Continuous ideas and concepts developed the logo into four possible concepts, these were then

sent to a few friends for their thoughts.

The chosen version was the entirely slab-serif based logo, this was then concentrated on andtweaked slightly into two new versions. The first tweak was to test out the logo with tighterkerning making the letters butt into each other and the second was to swap the dot on the letter 'I'for a crescent moon to represent the night time element.

  • 8/10/2019 Logo Design Project Step by Step Walkthrough

    5/193

The tight kerning gave the logo a more modern and attractive appearance but made the letter 'I'interfere with the capital 'N'. Combining this with the use of the crescent moon was a perfectsolution.

One other issue was the slight interference with the letter 'I' and the letter 't', experiments weremade to knock out part of the letter with a flowing curve following the line of the 't'. This helpssolve the problem and adds a little designerish touch! The complete logo design was then complete, shown in it's barebones mono state before beingtreated to colour and subtle effects.

The Making of the myNiteLife Logo Now you've seen my personal development thoughts behind the logo, I thought it would be greatto show the techniques used in Adobe Illustrator to create the final logo from scratch.

First off, the wording 'my', 'nite' and 'life' were typed out and set in the chosen font of Clarendon , making use of both light and black variations.

    http://www.fonts.com/font/linotype/clarendon-lthttp://www.fonts.com/font/linotype/clarendon-lthttp://www.fonts.com/font/linotype/clarendon-lthttp://www.fonts.com/font/linotype/clarendon-lt
  • 8/10/2019 Logo Design Project Step by Step Walkthrough

    7/193

The tight kerning was quickly applied by choosing the -75 option from within the character palette.

Additional kerning adjustments were made to individual letters, ensuring that all charactersoverlapped slightly. This was done by using the ALT key along with the left and right cursorkeys.

  • 8/10/2019 Logo Design Project Step by Step Walkthrough

    8/193

As mentioned previously, this causes unwanted interference with some characters, the solutionsof which were to add the pretty curve along the letter 'I' and swap the dot for a crescent moon.

The line of type was converted to outlines (Type > Create Outlines) to make each letter aneditable shape. These were then ungrouped to enable access to the letters individually.

  • 8/10/2019 Logo Design Project Step by Step Walkthrough

    9/193

A temporary circle was used as a tool to measure the gap between the letters 'I' and 't'.

The same tool was used to plot a guide at the same distance from the bottom of the letter 't'.

  • 8/10/2019 Logo Design Project Step by Step Walkthrough

    10/193

A third guide was added to the lowest most part of the straight edge of the letter 'I'. Using allthree guides a larger circle was drawn which resulted in an accurate curve that followed parallelto the outline of the letter 't'.

Using this new circle along with the Subtract from Shape Area option from the Pathfinder toolenabled the excess section of the letter 'I' to be chopped out.

  • 8/10/2019 Logo Design Project Step by Step Walkthrough

    11/193

The resulting shape of the letter 'I' I think gives a slightly more unique characteristic to the logo.

The final fix to the logo was to add the crescent moon shape to relate to the night aspect of the brand. To edit the letter 'I' the Compound Path was released to separate the shape into two pieces.

  • 8/10/2019 Logo Design Project Step by Step Walkthrough

    12/193

The dot was scaled up to give more of a visual impression, then a temporary circle was used toknock out an area of the shape to give the crescent shape.

The only remaining step was to clean up the logo by combining all the individual letter shapesinto one complete object using the Add to Shape Area from the Pathfinder tool.

  • 8/10/2019 Logo Design Project Step by Step Walkthrough

    13/193

With the logo being generated in the mono state it could then be given some sprucing up withcolour and slight visual effects. The colour purple was chosen for the brand to relate to the sexyand classy image that the myNiteLife site was to portray, and also gives a nice deep colour torepresent the colours associated with dusk.

Love it or hate it? Id be happy to hear your thoughts in the comments.

Step 1 - Create the Document

Open a new Illustrator document 11 inches by 8.5 inches in CMYK color mode. This probablyisnt your default setting so make sure to change the Units and Color Mode for t his one.

Select the Rectangle Tool (M), with no fill and .25pt stroke, then click once on the stage andenter 4in wide by 3.5in high. Select Ellipse Tool (L), click once on the stage and enter 2.1in by2.2in. Select both the ellipse and the square, and in the Align palette center the objectshorizontally and vertically.

Step 2 - Make Crop Marks

Select the square, and in the Menu go Filter > Create > Crop Marks. Increase the square size to4.125in by 3.875in. This square will be the size of our image, which is 1/8in larger than the cropmarks. This ensures no white-space when you or the printers cut these labels out.

Another really cool feature in Illustrator is the Opacity Mask. I will use it here to fade out thelines. Copy the green square and paste it in front of the lines, and give it a radial black and whitegradient, with black in the center.

Select the square and the lines, and in the Transparency palette menu, choose Make OpacityMask.

Previously, I have featured David Pache of Dache on WDW, an amazing logo designerfrom Switzerland. He is known for designing unique and colorful logos. I'm very gladto have David to share his design process of the WebMYnd's logo. This case study(written by David himself) provides full creative brief and progress images from startto final. Read on to find out how David got inspired by Wassily Kandinsky 's art (one ofthe most famous 20th-century abstract artists) to create this fantastic logo.

    Introduction

Last year, I was approached by a startup who required a logo in order to launch a business in theUS. The WebMYnd team were 3 MIT and Cambridge University graduates who were very

passionate about their product. They had acquired seed funding from ycombinator an outfitwhich picks enterprises to back and who have an excellent track record. WebMYnd have a

product which is a plugin for your browser that turns your web browsing into an extension ofyour own memory. it allows you to keep a copy of everything you look at on the web, and thenallows you to search actual page images and text when you need to remember something again.

The creative briefThe main aspect of their brief was to create an identity which would communicate the idea ofcollecting everything you look at on the web in one place and to inspire the idea of extendingyour memory. They wanted to make a tool that people would prefer to use in place of the oldfashioned way of bookmarking and tagging websites. They also wanted the logo, or someelement of it, as a button to indicate when the plugin was in use therefore colour was of greatimportance.

    Getting started

Initially, I took the brief at face value and brainstormed some ideas. I wanted to create a conceptusing the initial from WebMYnd and the first concept which was produced as as follows. Thesimple lines created an abstract reference to a brain (an idea which the client had experimentedwith but did not like the appearance of a brain. This design captures the essence of a brain but atthe same time forming a W.

The first of these above gave the best line to work with however I did not like the linear aspect asI would be unable to use enough variation of colour within a single lined image. Below are mydevelopments of the first idea into a two dimensional concept and intersecting these shapes withdiffering elements to allow me to fill with colour.

After some re-drafting of one of the concepts, i decided on a wholly symmetrical design wherethe W mirrored the M therefore I transferred the design to the Dot Grid Book below. As thedesign had four elements which were identical in design, I was able to just concentrate on oneelement which could be copied and rotated at a later stage using the computer software.

    Colours

Once the four elements were plotted and finalised, I looked at possible colours. Below are somecombinations which I experimented with.

I finally decided on the colour scheme below using quite vibrant colours to create a presence buttrying not to use garish tones which would offend the eye of the audience.

Final colour placement and concept presentation

I tried many combinations. When dealing wit the use of colour in this quantity, it is a case oftrying until you find the right solution. Below is the finished design which was selected by theclient.

    62/193

    Delivery and feedback

The client initially loved the concept and used it for a number of months however after somefurther discussion between themselves, they decided to choose a different design to moveforward with however they still retain the rights to the design, should they wish to implement itin the future.

I would like to thank the creators of WebMYnd and wish them every success for the future. Itwas a pleasure to work on this project and this design is one of the more popular with clientswhen they see my portfolio. Of course, I welcome any comments regarding this specific articleor my design process in general. Thanks and enjoy!

This entry is part 22 of 22 in the Vector Text Effects Session - Show All Previous

With oil prices the way they are today, everybody is thinking Green. I have done many projectsrecently that require a Green style applied to the design. In the following Illustra tor tutorial, Illteach you how to create a Green type treatment. It works great for logos and other designelements.

    1. Create Your TextStep 1

Create a New document that is 8.5 x 11 inches . Choose a typeface for the type treatment (I used"Helvetica Bold") and type out what you want. Next, Outline the text by going to Type >Create Outlines .

    64/193

    Step 2

With the text selected, create a Linear Gradient from the Gradient panel. Change the color ofthe first swatch on the Gradient Slider (left swatch) to a light green (I used these CMYK values:C=40, M=0, Y=100, K=0 ). Change the second swatch on the Gradient Slider to a darker green(C=60 M=16 Y=100 K=0 ). Use the Gradient Tool (G) to adjust the gradient by clicking at the

top of the type and dragging to the bottom of the type so the dark part is at the bottom.

    2. Create a LeafStep 1

Now were going to create some leaves. Start by drawing a leaf shape with the Pen Tool (P) .Again, with the Pen Tool (P) , draw a line that starts at the tip of leaf and ends in the middle ofthe bottom part of the leaf. After selecting the line and the leaf shape, press the Divide button in

    3. Create a Waterdrop

Next come the water droplets. Create an oblong ellipse with the Ellipse Tool (L) . Then create aLinear Gradient using the same colors as the leaf and text. Adjust the gradient so the dark sideis on the bottom left.

Create another ellipse on top of the previous ellipse and create a Radial Gradient with the sameswatches as the highlight gradient. Adjust this gradient so the light part of the gradient is coming

    from the bottom left.

Create two more smaller ellipses with Linear Gradients matching the highlight gradient. Onceyou are done, group all the ellipses, scale and place them on the leaf shapes. You can easily copythe droplet by holding down Alt and dragging a copy.

    Step 1

The next couple of steps deal with creating the ladybug. Create an ellipse and fill it with aLinear Gradient . Make the first swatch in the gradient a red ( C=0 M=100 Y=100 K=0 ) and thesecond an even darker red ( C=0 M=100 Y=100 K=35 ). Adjust the gradient so the red color is atthe bottom of the ellipse.

Copy (Command + C ) the ellipse and Paste it in Front (Command + F ). Draw another biggerellipse that overlaps the center of the original ellipse. After selecting one of the original ellipsesand the overlapping circle, press the Intersect Shape Areas button in the Pathfinder panel.Make the intersected shape a Linear Gradient with the first swatch white and the second swatchred. Adjust the gradient so the white is at the top of the shape.

    1. Setting up your Document in Photoshop

Once you have photoshop open, go to File -> New . Then specify the name of the logo, and awidth of 600 and a height of 500 .

Then click " OK " (Refer to the screenshot below).

After you click "OK" Your setup should look like this:

    138/193

(I'm on a 1600x1200 resolution. ) For the menus on the left, I have the layers view , and the Characters in

    view.)

    2. Experiment with Font Selections

As a starting point, I always experiment with a font that I think will work well with the logo. You have todevelop an eye for what font will or will not work, with the specifics of the project in mind. Since forbluelaguna we're trying to focus on a serious yet gamer'ish feel, a serious font selection might be the bestbet. Having yourself an arsenal of fonts is very important. I have several thousand myself.

  • 8/10/2019 Logo Design Project Step by Step Walkthrough

    139/193

Select the Text Tool on the left menu: (As shown on the image to the right)

Adjust the settings on the Text Properties at the top to match these settings:

In the character window to the right, set AV to -60 as shown below: (This simply shortensthe space between each separate character, I like starting out with this setting, I don't knowwhy :)

Type " BLUE LAGUNA " in the document space (First, be sure that the background is white, you can use the fill tool for this. And I've decided to go with all caps to start out with, since allcaps is generally deemed more serious).

  • 8/10/2019 Logo Design Project Step by Step Walkthrough

    140/193

With the type tool selected, and layer 1 selected, select the font list menu (where it says Arial):

You can do this next section in either three ways. - Hit the "Down" arrow to change the font view of "BLUE LAGUNA".- Hit the Down Arrow of the Font List to see the list of available fonts with a tiny preview of thefont.- Download a font viewing program.

I personally just use the first method, although I sometimes use a font viewing program. Ourgoal here is to find fonts that might work with the logo.

Once you come across a font that looks like it could work, you should Duplicate the layer inthe Layers Window to the right, and then hide the previous layer (The layer you right clicked

and selected "Duplicate" from. This way, you've saved that font selection (the hidden layer),and you have a new layer to find more fonts from) :

  • 8/10/2019 Logo Design Project Step by Step Walkthrough

    141/193

    3. Good and Bad Font Selections

Since our goal with this particular logo is to be serious, we need serious looking fonts. It simply takes timeto develop an eye for what is serious and what isn't.

  • 8/10/2019 Logo Design Project Step by Step Walkthrough

    142/193

  • 8/10/2019 Logo Design Project Step by Step Walkthrough

    143/193

This is what I've come up with:

Although I didn't use one of the 6 fonts I selected initially for the word "blue", I simply used an unboldened versionof "LAGUNA", which keeps a consistent feel but also allows for separation of the two words.

    5. Adding in a symbol

Sometimes logos work well with only the use of fonts, but most times adding in a relevant symbol of somesort will really make a logo stand out. When I say "symbol", I mean any part of the logo which isn't actualtext. So let's start with the first font selection from above:

  • 8/10/2019 Logo Design Project Step by Step Walkthrough

    144/193

  • 8/10/2019 Logo Design Project Step by Step Walkthrough

    145/193

The Pen Tool is your Friend

The most important tool when it comes to logo design is the pen tool. If there is one tool to thoroughlyunderstand, it should be the pen tool. The pen tool allows you to create any shape(s) you want, andmaintain vector format (which is very important if you ever want to size your logo up n' down (forprofessional print or whatever.)

It's always good to draw your logo by hand without copying over a picture (vector tracing), but if you aren'tvery talented and don't have much experience, it might be your only option. So for the sake of making thebiggest impact on this tutorial, I will teach you all an awesome technique for creating great lookingsymbols for you logos.

    Finding a suitable picture

If you're going to trace, I always suggest using a site like istockphoto.com to find the image and pay for it.This way you won't be using copyrighted images to trace over. Or taking your own picture to trace over.Unfortunately though, istockphoto has nothing with RPG or "anime". So I just went on images.google.comand found a picture which I think is suitable, here it is:

When I came across this picture, I got the idea that I can vectortrace over her face and hair to create what I want, and thenintegrate it along with the font selection in some unique way.

So once you've found the picture you want to trace (if not the sameone), save it to your hard drive, open it up in photoshop, CTRL-A,CTRL-C to select it and copy it, and go back to your main logodocument and CTRL-V.

Now you've imported this picture into your logo document. Onceyou've imported it, with her layer selected, you can cut off thebottom half of her body. (Select the first tool in the upper left cornerof the tools menu, Rectangular Marquee Tool), select the bottomhalf of her body and hit the delete key. Your screen should looksomething like this by now (You can hide the text layers behind it).

  • 8/10/2019 Logo Design Project Step by Step Walkthrough

    146/193

    Vector Tracing

Now select the magnifying glass in the tools menu and select around the girl, it will look like this zoomedup to about 400%:

Now select the pen tool in the tools menu:

  • 8/10/2019 Logo Design Project Step by Step Walkthrough

    147/193

Make sure that the foreground color (the black square at the bottom of the pic to the upper right ---^) isthe same dark blue color of the text we specified.

In the layers window to the right, select the little round circular > icon on the upper right corner of thewindow, and click on "Create New Layer" in the window that comes up. Hit "OK" and then in the layerswindow, with the new layer selected, change the Opacity to 0%. We do this because once we start tracingover the image, we don't want the dark blue color hiding the picture of the girl below.

And with the pen tool selected, click a point somewhere on the outline of the hair (at the top), and thenclick to make another point somewhere on the hairline where the line will begin to form. You can holddown and "direction" the angle of the line to create a certain type of curve. It takes awhile to get the hangof, but it's very easy once you get the hang of it. After plotting points of an entire section of hair, yoursshould look similar to this: (Note: I've lightened the opacity of the girl to illustrate what your lines shouldlook like so far)

  • 8/10/2019 Logo Design Project Step by Step Walkthrough

    148/193

    (opacity 100%)

It's not perfect, but for now it's a good start.

Now I'm simply going to continue creating more shapes, like the facial features. After 15-20 minutes or soof creating the different facial features and the face itself, here is what I have come up with:

As you can see, I specified a different color for the face (light blue). And by now I have around 15 different layers. There's a separate layerfor the top portion of each eye, the bottom portion of each eye, themiddle, and the small glare. There's also a layer for the facebackground, and the ear.

So let us continue and add some shading...

  • 8/10/2019 Logo Design Project Step by Step Walkthrough

    149/193

After about 20 more minutes of shading, this is what I've come up with:

There are a total of 3 different layers for the hair. It's somewhat of atedious process to do hair shading simply because there's a lot ofstrands of hair! But you have to just condense them and get the

general idea of the shading and it will work out well.

Then I did some light shading work on the face and the neck.

Now I consider the actual draft of the symbol complete. Let's make ourinitial text layer visible and see what we can do to integrate the symbolwith the text.

First, you will want to select the very last to the very first vector layer that you created (you'll have acouple dozen or more), hold down the shift so you can select them all. Then in the layers window click thelittle circular round button and select "New Group From Layers". This will put all of the layers of the girl, into one easily manageable layer group. This way, you can move around the one group and it will keep allof their positions together so it won't break up her face.
