Introduction

The Certificate of Shipping and Logistics is jointly developed by the HKU School of Professional and Continuing Education (HKU SPACE) and the Hong Kong Shippers’ Council as a re-constitution of the highly popular Comprehensive Certificate Course.

The aims of this programme are:1. To provide industry practitioners, especially the new entrants a

comprehensive training programme on the basics of shipping and logistics operations;

2. To provide practitioners an academic progression path that leads to higher academic/ profess ional qual i f icat ions through this programme.

Medium of InstructionThe lectures are normally conducted in English, supplemented by Cantonese. Handouts and examinations are in English.

AwardStudents who have an overall pass (2 examinations, 1 quiz and 1 written report) and have attended at least 70% of the lectures will be awarded the Certificate.

Minimum Entry RequirementsApplicants shall1. Attained Hong Kong Diploma in Secondary Education (HKDSE) Level 2 or above in 5 subjects including English Language; or2. Attained Hong Kong Certificate of Education Grade E/Level 2 or above in 5 subjects including English Language; or3. 1 year relevant work experience at supervisory level in shipping and logistics industry; or4. Completed Form 5/Secondary 6 with employer’s recommendation endorsed by the Hong Kong Shippers’ Council.

Applications will be considered by the Admission Committee on a case by case basis. Those with other equivalent qualifications and relevant work experience will be considered on individual merits.

Further studyGraduates of this programme having attained Grade C or above in either one of the examinations are eligible to apply for the Professional Diploma in Logistics and Transport Management Programme.

The Programme StructureThe programme covers 12 topics in 2 modules in 8 months and the lectures will be arranged every Tuesday night. Visits will be organized to sea container terminal, air cargo terminal or the like during the course.

Module 1: Freight Transport Operation1. Introduction to Shipping Introduction to the Maritime industry in HK, Shipping Terminology, Conference, Alliance, Shipping Related Services.2. Carriage of Goods by Sea - Types of shipping services and types of Chartered Parties; - Documentation and booking procedures; - Bill of Lading – Law and Practice (types of functions, Bill of Lading Act 1855); - Local and International law relating to Carriage of Goods by Sea.3. Carriage of Goods by Air - Classification of air cargo, advantages and disadvantage of air shipment; - International rules governing air cargo transportation and basic principles of rating, including IATA, TACT; - Documentation for air cargo (airway bill, etc) and airfreight claims; - Airlines conditions of carriage, rules for air cargo acceptance.

4. Carriage of Goods by Land Transport - Trucking services in Hong Kong; - Packing, unitization and containerization.5. Cargo Insurance - General principle of cargo insurance, policy form and certificates, special clauses; - Claim procedures; - Background and features of Export Credit Insurance Corporation (ECIC), scope of coverage of export insurance in terms of buyers’ risks and insurance risks, types of insurance policies offered by ECIC.

1. Enrolment can be done in person at any of the School's Enrolment Counters by completing this application form and submitting it with the appropriate fee and relevant documents. 2. Fees paid by crossed cheque or bank draft should be made payable to “HKU SPACE”.3. For general and short courses, applicants may be required to pay the course fee in cash or by EPS, Visa or MasterCard if the course will start shortly.4. If admission is on a first-come, first-served basis and if you do not hear from us before the course starts, you may assume that your application has been

accepted, and should attend the course as scheduled.5. If admission is by selection, the official receipt is not a guarantee that your application has been accepted. We will inform you of the result as soon as possible

Notes to Non-local Applicants

To study in Hong Kong, all non-local applicants are required to obtain a student visa issued by the Immigration Department of the HKSAR Government, except for those admitted to Hong Kong for employment or as dependants, who do not need prior approval before taking up part-time studies. It is the responsibility of individual applicants to make appropriate visa arrangements. Admission to a HKU SPACE academic programme/course does not guarantee the issue of a student visa. Applicants may wish to note that part-time courses are generally not considered by the Immigration Department for visa purposes except for self-financed, part-time locally accredited taught postgraduate programmes awarded within the HKU System through HKU SPACE.
