FRIPT seeks to increase production capacity and transportelectricity between the Inga site and the town of Kolwezi, adistance of 2 300 km.
The link transmits power from the Inga hydropower stationon the Congo river to the mining district of Katanga in thesouth-east of the country. It also exports the excess power toSouthern African Power Pool countries.

ABB will refurbish the original link it built in 1982, whichwill boost transmission capacity, enhance grid reliability, extend the lifespan of the line and ensure the efficienttransmission of hydroelectricity across the region.
The retrofit will make it possible to increase transmissioncapacity from 520 MW to 1 000 MW, securing powersupplies to the mining region in Katanga and strengtheningthe power infrastructure in the DRC.
ABB’s project scope includes system studies, supply of keyequipment such as high-voltage apparatus andcommissioning.
“We are pleased to continue our long association with theInga-Kolwezi HVDC Link and contribute to thestrengthening of the DRC’s power infrastructure. Thisupgrade will boost supply of clean hydropower to industrialand domestic customers,” said ABB power grids divisionpresident Claudio Facchin.
