A 450kW twin-jet Turgo turbine was supplied by Gilkes of Kendal. Electricity is generated at 415V and stepped-up to 11kV for export to the local distribution network. It is estimated that the hydropower scheme shall produce enough green electricity to supply 280 average homes. The scheme lies within the boundary of the Lake District National Park and part of the derogated reach of river is within the Duddon Valley Woodlands Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). As a consequence, detailed environmental assessment was required to ensure that appropriate measures were taken to eliminate or minimise adverse impacts arising for the hydropower works. Inter Hydro Technology (IHT) was contracted to design the civil structures for the scheme, as well as undertake overall project management. At the scheme intake, IHT specified a broad crested weir with a Coanda screen in order to reduce maintenance requirements, which can be particularly demanding during autumn months. Water passes into a conveyance channel beneath the screen and continues to an intake chamber at the entrance of the penstock. A fish pass with stainless steel baffles was installed at the side of the intake to facilitate passage of migratory species. The penstock consists of 600mm diameter, high density polyethylene pipe sections, joined together using an electro-fusing technique. The total penstock is approximately 1km in length and provides a gross elevation head of 100m. The powerhouse was designed in the image of a Lakeland barn, to be sympathetic to the surroundings. The structural engineering work was conducted by IHT's parent company R G Parkins & Partners Ltd. LOGAN GILL, CUMBRIA

The Logan Gill hydropower scheme is located on a tributary of the River Duddon, 3km North-West of Broughton in Furness, Cumbria.

At the scheme intake, IHT specified a broad crested weir with a Coanda screen in order to reduce

maintenance requirements, which can be particularly demanding during autumn months.
