This is a great introduction presentation to the concepts and

principles of leadership. In this interactive review and discussion we

will review some key attributes of leadership to ensure

understanding and so everyone has an understanding. There will be

a discussion on the characteristics of leadership. There will be

discussions on situational leadership, objective thinking and change

management. We will discuss why character, personal satisfaction

and managing fear are important. We will talk about why taking

responsibility and helping others is important. Then wrap it up with conclusions and a Q & A

period. Participants should be able to understand and know how to apply these leadership

skills with practice immediately.

BCS New Products Supply Chain Materials Manager and as BCS Outsourcing and Contract

Manufacturing Manager. Prior to working for Hewlett-Packard, he worked for Texas

Instruments in various operations and materials management positions in the

semiconductor and computer divisions. His responsibilities at TI included material planning

and distribution; managing Quality Improvement Teams; and earning a 6 Sigma Black Belt.

APRIL PDM REVIEW

For the April 2016 PDM, the North Texas Chapter was very pleased to host Michael Meagher, Vice President of Supply Chain & Logistics for Ericsson. The topic centered around “What does it take to revamp the entire supply chain end-to-end while delivering billions of dollars in revenue?” The presentation started with Michael reviewing where Ericsson’s supply chain was in 2014 including how much inventory was in the supply system, what the on-time performance was, and what the costs were. The company benchmarked themselves during this time as well in order to objectively determine their performance and also challenge themselves to improve. He showed a map of the United States that included all of the warehouses and shipments for 2013 – it was a very busy map and the data showed they had a lot of cross-country shipments just to move inventory around. The on-time delivery was only 59%. Michael discussed how their supply chain was viewed as a cost center, which did not help drive improvements in the system. They also had very strong reliance on their logistics provider. Mr. Meagher was determined to fully revamp the supply chain and needed top management buy-in in order to make it happen. After many presentations and reviews of the plan, it was approved and the company started on their journey. The plan was to overhaul the organization by June 2016 to create a best in class supply chain. There was a full objective review of logistics providers included in the analysis of the future plans. In addition, it was determined the best way to control the supply chain was to fully utilize SAP to manage all transactions and allow full visibility. The changes were definitely difficult and communication was likely the most important factor to make the change a success. It was determined that the company would change logistics providers as part of the transformation, which was a massive disruptive change to the system. Michael added that one mistake they made was to make sure your contracts are completed with your new providers before you let your current provider know that you are making a change. Ericsson made it work, but it was definitely a key learning. At the end of the presentation, Mr. Meagher shared the company’s current benchmark data as well as where they are in terms of progress. While they do not currently hold the highest rated supply chain level, they are very close and have made massive improvements. As part of this transformation, they redesigned their warehouse network and how much inventory is held, invested in additional systems to help plan and gain visibility into their network, and realigned their organization to better match the major changes they have completed. In addition, now that Ericsson’s leadership has seen the success of this change for North America, they are considering similar changes to other divisions around the world. That is definitely the ultimate compliment. The APICS North Texas chapter would like to thank Michael for his outstanding presentation and hope that we can have him back in the future. This was an ideal presentation for Top Management night and turnout was outstanding.

Do you have problems? We have Students!!! The University of Texas at Dallas is seeking projects sponsored by local industries to share their needs with Masters Students analyzing a problem in Supply Chain Management, or related area. This Capstone course allows students to solve real-world challenging problems in a process improvement project for course credit.

Students are organized into teams of 4 or 5, matching their interests and skills to the requirements of the project. Students interview company representatives to better understand their current issues and opportunities, collect data to be analyzed, develop as-is process maps, opportunity roadmaps, and present their findings and recommendations to the companies at the conclusion of the semester. Students are supervised, and have access to tenured professors for guidance and suggestions. There is no fee to the company sponsors for the project.

The Changing of the Guard Howard B Hamilton, Ph.D., CPIM

Every June our chapter elects new officers: President-Elect, Secretary, Treasurer, and Vice Presidents of Education, Operations, Marketing, and Membership. The vice presidents select board members to serve on their functional teams: Education, Operations, Marketing, and Membership. (Maybe select is not the operative word; entice, cajole, coerce, etc., may better describe the process of selecting team members.) With eight elected officers and four or so members per team, your board of directors numbers over twenty chapter leaders.

If you have considered serving your chapter as a board member, please e-mail me or one of the Nominating Committee members (listed below) to inquire about the positions available and what the responsibilities are. Like the Marines, “we are always looking for a few good people.” Since our membership is a little over five hundred, two percent participation would provide the leadership we need to maintain an effective chapter. We have several student members on this year’s board of directors. The time commitment is about eight to ten hours per month.

The chapter asks for a two year commitment from new board members, but that is not mandatory. If board members can commit to three years, then only one-third of the board would be new each year. W e could develop continuity and have the opportunity to do some succession planning.

What are the advantages (and perks) of serving on the board of directors? First, you get to develop relationships with fellow APICS members from various manufacturing and service companies in the D/FW area. Board members attend Professional Development Meetings at a reduced rate. The monthly board meeting (third Thursday) includes a catered meal. The chapter also permits board members to attend some chapter training courses for reduced prices. Another reward is the two-day Leadership Training Seminars or Workshops presented several times a year by District staff and District Chapter members at locations throughout the USA (and this year, a joint District meeting in Canada.) Over the past twenty years of service on the board, I have attended workshops in Austin, Estes Park, a joint workshop in Nashville with chapter members from three other APICS districts, and twice in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. My former employer provided the time to attend these workshops, with much of the travel and hotel expenses paid by our chapter.

And the crown jewel, the annual APICS International Conference and Exhibition provides three or four outstanding keynote speakers and a plethora of seminars and workshops for three days, as well as exhibits from dozens of supply chain management software and related companies. My former employer sponsored m y travel to International Conferences in San Diego, New Orleans (twice), Nashville, and Washington DC. So, I never asked my employer to pay m y membership dues. Many employers are more than willing to provide the opportunity for their employees to obtain leadership training and exposure to the latest ideas, models, and applications of Supply Chain Planning and Management, as well as the software to support Resource Management Systems. Your involvement with APICS provides added indication of your dedication to maintaining and enhancing your skills and knowledge in Operations Management.

Now is the time to volunteer. During the months of July or August, the board members hold strategic planning meetings. The outgoing board members assist the incoming (and returning) members develop plans for the coming years. Several times we have spent a day or two at Tanglewood Resort on Lake Texoma, developing our chapter’s strategic plans.

We are currently looking for a treasurer, a Programs director to help coordinate program speakers, a Plant Tours director, some Education directors to coordinate our education programs, and some Membership directors to help coordinate our Membership programs.
