Local Oral History Collections Introduction The Archives and Special Collections Research Center in the Ball State University Libraries houses oral history collections comprised of interviews on a variety of topics that document the history of Muncie and Delaware County. This brief guide provides a description of some of the collections available. An interviewee list is provided at the end of the guide. Manuscript collections, photographs, and other research documenting the same topics may also be available. Muncie History Oral Histories (R 9) Collection consists of 3 interviews (7 cassette tapes) on local history topics. Thomas P. and Eva Mann Oral Histories (R 10) Collection consists of an interview (1 reel-to-reel tape) entitled “Going West with Grandfather Mann.” Typed transcript is available. Cecil Beeson Oral Histories (R 11) Collection consists of 8 interviews (9 cassette tapes) on local history topics from 1975-1976. Peace Movement Oral Histories (R 12) Collection consists of 9 interviews (11 original cassette tapes, 10 user copies) conducted in 1981 with students and faculty involved in the peace movement on campus during the 1960s. Aging in Muncie Oral Histories (R 13) Collection consists of 18 interviews (18 cassette tapes) conducted in 1981 for the History 220, Aging in Muncie Oral History Project. Biographical information and interview notes are available. Muncie Jewish Oral History Project (R 14) Collection consists of 21 interviews (24 cassette tapes, 15 hours). This project was conducted in 1979 under the sponsorship of Mr. Martin Schwartz, who commissioned Ball State University professors C. Warren Vander Hill and Dwight Hoover to interview Jewish residents who had lived in Muncie in the 1920s and 1930s. Typed transcripts are available. William Sutton Oral Histories (R 15) Collection consists of 1 interview (1 cassette tape). The interview was conducted in 1980 as part of the Carl Sandburg Oral History Project. B-Western Movies Oral Histories (R 17) Collection consists of 10 interviews (10 cassette tapes) conducted in 1981 as part of a History 499 class project on the history of the “B” Western movie. Temple Beth El Centennial Celebration (R 19) Collection consists of 3 tapes recorded as part of a celebration to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the building of Temple Beth El in Muncie, Indiana. Black Middletown Oral Histories, 1981 (R 21) Collection consists of 54 interviews (65 cassette tapes, 65 hours) conducted by researchers from the University of Virginia and Virginia Commonwealth University as part of the Middletown II Project. Muncie Civic Theatre Oral Histories (R 22) Collection consists of 24 interviews (24 cassettes and 1 reel-to-reel tape) of interviews with members of the Muncie Civic Theatre in 1985. The interviews were conducted as part of the Community Theatre in Middletown Project. One interview has been transcribed. Unitarian Universalist Church Oral Histories (R 24) Collection consists of 6 interviews (6 cassette tapes) with members of the Unitarian Universalist Church conducted in the early 1980s. Mary Fran Abel Collection, “Your Window to the Past” Oral Histories (R 25) Collection consists of approximately 3 interviews (4 cassette tapes) with local residents. The interviews were conducted by Mary Fran Abel in 1982. Muncie Police Department Oral Histories (R 28) Collection consists of 3 interviews (3 cassette tapes) with members of the Muncie Police Department, including former Chief of Police James Carrey, in 1993. Typed transcripts are available. Roger Pelham Oral Histories (R 30) Collection consists of 1 interview (2 cassette tapes) with Roger Pelham. He discusses his life in Muncie and his work photographing the Indianapolis 500 for the Indianapolis Star. The interview was conducted by Nancy Turner in 1994. The interview was conducted by Nancy Turner in 1996. Riverside Methodist Church Oral Histories (R 44) Collection consists of approximately 29 interviews (29 cassette tapes) with members of the Riverside Methodist Church in Muncie, Indiana. The interviews were conducted between 1971 and 1980. Thomas A. Sargeant Papers (R 46) Collection consists of 2 interviews (2 cassette tapes; 3 micro cassette tapes) with members of the Muncie Symphony Orchestra. The interviews were conducted in 1993. The interviews were conducted by Rodney Gill in August 2003. Muncie Jewish Oral History Project II, 2002-2003 (R 63) Collection consists of 24 interviews (24 cassette tapes, 36 hours). This project was done as a follow-up to the Muncie Jewish Oral History Project. C. Warren Vander Hill interviewed members of the Muncie Temple Beth El congregation. Typed transcripts of these interviews are available. Veterans History Project Oral Histories (R 66) Collection consists of excerpts of interviews (1 user CD, 1 archival CD) from R 1, R2, R3, R4, and R 78. The excerpts were compiled by Michael Wood in 2006, and a copy is to be sent to the Library of Congress. Muncie Labor Oral Histories (R 76) Collection consists of 15 audio cassette tapes of interviews conducted by Warren Vander Hill between December 2005 and February 2006. The interviews were initiated as part of the Center for Middletown Studies’ effort to document recent economic changes in Muncie, Indiana, and record the history of labor unions in Muncie. Also included are typed transcripts for each interview, as well as photographs of each interviewee taken at the time of the interview (PSC 285). American Indian Recordings (R98) Collection consists of 5 cassette tapes and CDs from the American Indian Oral History Collection of the Library of Indian Affairs. The interviews were edited by Joseph H. Cash and discuss the Kinship System of the Crow Clan. Other Side of Middletown Oral Histories (R 254) Collection consists of 78 interviews (97 cassette tapes, 97 hours). These interviews were conducted as part of a collaborative ethnography project on Muncie’s African-American community. Full transcripts are being prepared, but research notes are available. Muncie Economic Development Oral Histories (R 256) Collection includes 19 interviews conducted with local civic and business leaders involved in past and current efforts to address long-term economic change in Muncie and Delaware County, Indiana. The interviews were conducted by the Center for Middletown Studies, who referred to the project as “Muncie’s Response to Economic Change: An Oral History”.
