• Founded in 1902, Nanjing University is one of China’s top universities directly under the Ministry of Education. It is located in the historic city of Nanjing known as the ancient capital of six dynasties.

• Over the past 100 years, the university has achieved a coordinated development in multiple disciplines including Humanities, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, Technological and Management, etc.

• Today’s NJU consists of three beautiful campuses, Gulou ,Pukou, and Xianlin . As a top university in China, it boasts advanced teaching and research facilities.

• Presently, NJU is comprised of 21 schools with 59 departments. It runs 78 undergraduate programs, 213 master’s programs, 9 professional master’s programs, 147 Ph.D. programs (under 23 primary disciplines), and 23 post-doctoral research stations. It also offers 9 professional master's programs, such as MBA, MPA, Law, Clinical Medicine, Engineering, Accounting and Fine Arts.

• NJU is also known for its vigorous exchanges with the outside world. Starting from 1979, NJU has established academic links with more than 200 universities and research institutes in around 70 countries. There are over 1,800 international scholars have taught or lectured and more than 18,000 international students studied on NJU campus.

• NJU never ceased its efforts to explore possible modes of cooperation and to learn from international experiences in teaching, researching and management. Such efforts resulted in the founding of the Center for Chinese and American Studies with the Johns Hopkins University, US., Regarded as "an overseas campus on the Chinese land," the Center for Chinese and American Studies has become a successful example of educational cooperation between China and the United States, and received much attention and acclamation from governments of both countries.

• The Institute for International Students (IFIS, NJU) is in charge of enrollment, management, teaching and service of all international students who come to study at Nanjing University.

• The Institute for International Students offers degree programs as well as various short term training programs. Currently, the Institute has about 50 full time faculty and staff members, of whom there are 8 professors and 17 associate professors. The Institute also hires about 20 part-time teachers from various departments of the university to teach courses in Chinese language and culture, history, philosophy, economics, environment, etc. to both degree and non-degree students.

Chinese Foreign Policy

This course intends to provide an overview and analysis of China’s foreign relations since the founding of the People’s Republic in 1949. It discusses the policy making process in China’s foreign relations in t he context of the domestic political, economic and social changes. It is important for students to be aware of the long, difficult and significant journey that China has covered in less than 60 years before coming to where it is and bracing itself for the challenges lying ahead.

Chinese Economy and Business Development

China’ s economy has gained rapid growth since 1978 when it embarked on economic reforms and opening up policies initiated by Mr. Deng Xiao-ping, and because of its size, dynamic growth, and continuing reform policies, China has clearly become a major participant in the world economy. The rapid growth of Chinese economy has been widely believed as a miracle. Students outside China are thus advised to understand what has happened to China’s internal and external economic development in the last three decades. This course is thus designed to provide students with a general picture of Chinese economic reforms, opening up, and business development, and to introduce students to a better understanding of many elements of China’ s emergence and its potential role in the world economy.

Chinese Culture

With more than 4,000 years of recorded history, China is known as one of the cradles of the world’s oldest civilizations and has an extremely rich cultural heritage. The aim of this course is to give a brief introduction to some fundamental aspects of Chinese culture, with an emphasis upon things and elements that are typically Chinese and worth knowing by those who are interested in this country and its culture. In quite a few cases, an introductory account of the historical background will be given for the sake of a better understanding of the topic under discussion. Classes will be accompanied by visits or practices of the students. The main contents include: Chinese ancient philosophy, religion, art, music, kungfu, education, cuisine and tea culture, traditional festivals, etc.

Chinese History

Chinese civilization, a one part of the global civilization, has its specific features. This course, as an access to understand China in its historical context, is a general introduction on the Chinese civilization, including the forming of the nation, dynastic history, cultural features, and other events and elements that have significantly helped to foster the Chinese civilization. Students will be encouraged to investigate some recent research focuses as case studies, such as the institution evolution, the culture and social transition, the women history, and others. As one of the earliest civilizations, Chinese civilization has great contribution to the world history, and has also been benefited from the communication with other civilizations. Students in this course will also be encouraged to seek what is unique in Chinese civilization, and what is common between Chinese civilization and the other civilizations.
