Why Loaded Movement Training in the Post Natal Period?

• It mimmicks real l ife….it looks like what moms DO!

• It’s easy to regress/progress

• We combine strength with CV work

• It’s integrated re: the Inner Unit – unconscious Pelvic Floor Work

• Integrated Core Work in a FUNCTIONAL POSITION!!

• It’s integrated re: the Global System – nose to toes

• Facilitates easy, fun and interesting mobilization

• Facilitates easy, fun and interesting strength-work

• Returns the mom safely to ‘athlete’ mode

• Probably the most interesting tool that’s been applied to this population for a long time….

The Roles of the Pelvic Floor

1. Supports/stabilizes the pelvic organ outlets.

2. Supports/stabilizes the pelvic organs against prolapse.

3. The fascial layer connects both locally and globally to the entire myofascial/musculoskeletal system.

4. Function is under the control of both the Parasympathetic and Sympathetic nervous system.

5. It has a role in sphincteric closure and release to prevent or aid bowel movements, urination and release of gas.

6. When functional, helps to resist intra-abdominal pressure.

7. Has a role in sexual function and plays a role in arousal/orgasm.

Post Natal Biomechanical Considerations

• Foot proprioception may stil l be altered

• Centre of Gravity/Mass has altered

• Rapid change in weight and size and then loss of weight

after birth

• Stil l potential for hormonally driven joint laxity/instability

• Deconditioned Musculoskeletal System and CV

• Greater potential for fatigue and lower capacity for

‘athletic’ work.

• Low rest = high cortisol!

• Complexity

• Load

• Lever Length

• Rotation if the client has Diastasis

• Work Time vs Rest Time – don’t exhaust

• How the client feels after the session

• Hydration – esp if breastfeeding

• Building a Community – Leave Time To Talk
