Peer AssessWhat works well… I like how you have used words like turquoise to describe the particular shade of blueEven better if…. Can you give your picture a title with some explanation. E.g. I would give this picture the title, ‘A Bigger Splash’ because …

Level 5 Level 6You have made well chosen references to colour(The blue of the sky matches the blue of the swimming pool)You have distinguished between shades of colour (light blue; dark blue)You have described how the use of colour makes you feel (The bright blue makes me feel happy)

You provide some contrast between the ways colour is used (The blue of the sky contrasts with the turquoise of the pool)You have used effective adjectives to describe colour (turquoise, cobalt)You have described how the use of colour affects the reader’s emotions (The first thing that strikes you is the vibrancy of the colours Hockney has used. The bold, striking blue …)

It’s quite a good picture of a swimming pool and a sky. Both the swimming pool and the sky are blue. The diving board is yellow and the trees are brown and green and tall.

A yellow diving board juts out of the margin into the paintings’ foreground and stands out dramatically against the turquoise water of the pool. The splash is represented by areas of lighter blue combined with fine white lines on the monotone turquoise which creates the sense of movement. I would give this picture the title, ‘A Bigger Splash’ because although it is absent of any person it seems to capture that liberating moment of jumping into a swimming pool.
