LCSS has worked diligently to obtain funding for additional technology for our students. As a result of this funding, we have purchased 120 iPod touches and 24 student MacBooks. We have also selected more than 65 students to participate in a program that enhances 21st century skills, math

and reading standards, and college and workforce readiness awareness. To date, students have created a podcast on the MacBooks, taken notes on their iPods, and researched information regarding the issue of college readiness with their iPods.

Apple Technology to Enhance Learning

ONLINE RESEARCH iPods allow for students to have a computer at all times. They are using them to access web resources for their research.

MACBOOK CREATIONS Apple MacBooks provide opportunities for student ideas to come to life through creative creations.: podcasts, webpages, and videos.

ONE IS NOT ENOUGH Student projects are created through a collaborative effort from each team member. Each person is important to the entire project.

the skill on a deeper level than what is typically seen in the classroom.

AFTERNOONSThe afternoon component of this program is focused on the individual. Students will be meeting individually with an LMSU teacher to evaluate their data from TCAP scores, MAP, Study Island, ACT Projections, and ACT Explore to create a plan of action for helping them reach the next level of their learning. This time is also for students to work on that plan and the tasks that have been identified by them as beneficial. We will be inviting guests to meet with students based on their specific interest, and conducting mock interviews with human resource personnel from our community, just to name a few.

EARNING POINTS FOR REWARDSWe have been working to finalize plans for a series of field trips and other rewards. A point system is also being developed for students to use to earn their placement for these rewards. Points will be earned for a number of things such as attendance at 7:30 am and after school, completing tasks on time during class and outside of school, completing Study Island assessments and CollegeforTN.com tasks. More details will be sent home as soon as they are final.

We now have 10 accounts with Lynda.com. This site allows for students to view tutorial videos on a wide variety of software such as iMove, iWeb, GarageBand, and Pages - all of which are used during LMSU. Students will be able to view these from home and will enhance their skills in using this software.

Please feel free to go to this site to see all that they have to offer. Students

will be allowed to check-out a login much like they do a library book. They will have access to all the videos on Lynda.com for the period of time they have the login. If you have any questions, please contact Cortnie Smith for more information.

COLLEGE READINESSImagine earning A’s and B’s in middle and high school and then being told that you have to take remedial courses before you can earn credits in college. As many as 43% of community college students are enrolled in a remedial class. At four-year colleges, the number is nearly 30%. The cost for colleges and taxpayers: more than $2 billion a year. It is these shocking statistics that have us at LMS focused on preparing our students for their future.

For the past few weeks, students in LMSU have been researching the issue of college readiness. It is imperative now more than ever before that they understand the real problem and work to increase their skills before reaching the end of

high school. After conducting research, students will be working in teams to create flyers, podcasts, web pages, and commercials that will be used to create awareness in our community about the importance of students getting prepared for life after high school.

Of course college is not for everyone. It is also important for our students to be workforce ready. With the increase in the skills needed to obtain high-skill, high-wage jobs, some type post-secondary education is required. Getting A’s and B’s may not be enough. Students in LMSU are learning basic skills that most employers want in future employees: leadership, communication, and teamwork.

40% of students entering community colleges are not prepared for either reading, writing, or math.In 2009, 23% of graduating seniors who took the ACT met benchmarks in English, math, reading, and science.Bureau of Labor Statistics: 60% of all future jobs require training that only 20% of the current workers possess

DURING LMSU

Note-taking has a whole new meaning. LMSU students have notes at their fingertips to refer to,

Learning can happen anywhere. The traditional learning environment is not always the best for students of the 21st century.
