We are pleased to report on an exciting and transformative year at the Lloyd Center for the Environment.

Thanks to overwhelming support for the Lloyd Center’s first-ever capital campaign, Transforming A Legacy,

a new Teaching Pavilion has been erected and construction is underway on a new Welcome Center in

partnership with the Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School. We are pursuing

Living Building Challenge™ (LBC™) certification for the Welcome Center, the most stringent program

in the world for construction of a ‘green building.’ This building will be an educational tool at every level.

Students are participating in the construction and once completed, the new Welcome Center will be the

entry to our 82-acre campus enjoyed by thousands of students and visitors annually.

Successful completion of the three million dollar Transforming A Legacy campaign is critical to support

the mission of the Lloyd Center and ensure the future of our programs.

In 2017, the Research Department worked to monitor threatened and endangered species throughout

Massachusetts and many of the New England states. The Education Department provided programs to over

13,000 students from 50 different public and private schools across Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The

Outreach Department engaged with over 2,000 community members through programs and events. Our

member-supported Dartmouth, Massachusetts Visitor Center/82-acre preserve attracted over 25,000 visitors.

Our organization continues to thrive and provide valuable programs to the community, thanks to

the reputation of excellence built by our tireless staff and board. We are extremely grateful to the staff,

Board of Directors, and volunteers who work on behalf of the Lloyd Center.

As always, our immense gratitude to the donors who make all of this possible by their continuing support

of the Lloyd Center.

The past third of a century has seen the Lloyd Center grow from a small environmental

“studies” organization to a dynamic membership-supported institution, whose research,

education and outreach services are increasingly sought by educators, government

agencies and residents throughout New England.

Founded in 1978 and situated with its headquarters and spectacular nature preserve

overlooking the scenic Slocum River estuary in Dartmouth, the Lloyd Center has

achieved a well-earned reputation for excellence in environmental research, education,

and outreach. Through its innovative outreach programs, it has established itself as a

highly regarded leader in the ongoing effort to raise awareness of the area’s fragile

coastal resources and the importance of protecting them.

At its 82-acre nature preserve, comprising pristine salt marsh, maritime forest and

undisturbed wetlands, in one of the most unspoiled reaches of southeastern New

England, the Visitor Center is open from 10am to 4pm, Tuesday through Saturday

(plus Sundays, June-September). Here, aquarium exhibits offer close-up views of live

freshwater and saltwater species of fish and other marine organisms. The Visitor Center

is also home to a fascinating collection of live local reptiles. At the always-popular

touch-tank, children learn the hands-on joy of socializing with gentle spider crabs,

elusive minnows, sea stars, whelks, hermit crabs, periwinkles and mussels.

The Lloyd Center’s majestic Red-shouldered Hawk continues to be the Center’s main

“Raptor-in-Residence”. Discovered permanently disabled in nearby woods, she was

rescued by Lloyd Center naturalists and nursed back to health. Although not here as

an “exhibit”, this magnificent bird of prey, having been painstakingly “socialized” by

members of the Center’s teaching staff, is now being introduced to thousands of wide-

eyed children, both in their classrooms and here at the Lloyd Center’s nature preserve.

To these eager learners, it has come to represent one of the true wonders of nature.

In March of 2013, the Center received its very own Eastern Screech Owl which is no

less wild, but partially impaired due to a retinal detachment in its left eye. The resident

raptors serve as educational tools for the biodiversity concept, which stresses the

interconnectedness and importance of all species around us, both large and small.

The top-floor Osprey Room Observatory, with its magnificent views of the Elizabeth

Islands and Buzzards Bay, has been designated by the Massachusetts Executive Office

of Environmental Affairs as one of the Commonwealth’s top-fifteen “Special Places”.

Through telescopes there, one can get a bird’s-eye view of formerly endangered

Ospreys, and their fledging chicks, nesting on platforms erected by members of the

Center’s research staff. Trails are open from dawn to dusk, seven days a week.

Since its founding, the Lloyd Center has focused its research activities on assessing

and documenting the distribution and ecology of the natural resources of southeastern

New England. The three biggest Lepidoptera projects were: 1) a survey of Lepidoptera

at MA Army National Guard Training Site (“Camp Edwards”) in order to compare

the current status of rare moth species with the results of the 1996-98 inventories

conducted by the Lloyd Center, 2) a survey of moths at Westborough Cedar Swamp

for the Sudbury Valley Trustees, and 3) the unveiling of Mass Moths, a project aimed

at identifying and mapping the 2,500+ past and current distribution of moths in

Massachusetts. Collaborating with Tufts University, the Lloyd Center completed

its 16th year as the Buzzards Bay coordinator of the Seabird Stranding Network

(SEANET), documenting instances of seabird mortality and live-bird activity on the

western shoreline of Buzzards Bay. Lloyd Center scientists conducted additional

rare-species habitat assessments in Martha’s Vineyard, Westport, and Cape Cod.

The Center also gathered baseline data for its Biodiversity Initiative, documenting

the biota of southeastern Massachusetts.

The Center continued its collaboration with Martha’s Vineyard conservation agencies

and produced rare-habitat assessments for a growing number of private landowners.

In addition to its continuing work in protecting Piping Plovers and state-threatened

species including Diamondback Terrapins on the Commonwealth’s Division of Con-

servation and Recreation beaches in Bristol County, the Center completed its 32nd

year of monitoring and protecting the federally-listed (“threatened”) Piping Plovers.

Research staff also participated in Bioblitzes in Dartmouth, Rhode Island and Berk-

shire County, as well as the Massachusetts Bristol County North American Butterfly

Association’s Fourth of July Butterfly Counts.

The Lloyd Center continues to provide an increasing number of unique hands-on

science programs for schoolchildren and adolescents in over 20 different New

England cities and towns, at levels ranging from kindergarten through college. This

past year, the Lloyd Center worked with over 50 pre-school, elementary and middle

schools in the region, visiting a growing number of students on a regular basis to

teach interactive lessons on relevant and critically important environmental issues.

Three of the curriculum-based offerings, Feathery Focus (an ornithology program

specially created for the third-grade level) and Turn-the-Tide (a program dealing with

the ecosystems of local estuaries, taught on the fifth-grade level), as well as the new

Climate Science Learning Project (CSLP) have proven to be especially effective. All

education programs are designed to meet the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks

in Science and Technology/Engineering and in History/Social Studies.

For children ages 5-15, the Center’s Education Department annually provides up to

15 distinct summer programs designed to help students develop a better understand-

ing of science and a deeper appreciation for the need to protect the fragile nature of

our coast. Every year, as many as 13,000 students benefit from the participation in

Lloyd Center education programs.

E N V I R O N M E N T A L O U T R E A C H

The Lloyd Center offers a wide variety of programs designed to engage the minds of

southeastern New England residents of all ages, expanding their understanding of the

fragile nature of our coastal environment and the importance of working together to

protect it.

This past year Lloyd Center Outreach staff interacted with over 2,450 people at various

community outreach events as well as popular Lloyd Center Programs such as canoe

tours, kayak trips, birthday parties, nature walks, shore-birding expeditions, seal and

whale watches, midnight “owl prowls”, butterfly and moth identification workshops,

our own community outreach events, and Koko the Owl and Friends Animal Encounter.

Five miles of rustic hiking trails, open to the public every day from dawn to dusk on the

Lloyd Center’s Hardscrabble Nature Preserve, and a broad variety of live marine animal

exhibits, complemented by programs and seminars, continue to draw a growing number

of residents of all ages to our Visitor Center. In addition, outreach collaboration with

partnering organizations continues to prove exceptionally effective in promoting life-

style changes aimed at a more sustainable use of natural resources. The Center’s unique

website provides a vast amount of environmental research and education information

for those who seek it electronically.

t h e t r a n s f o r m a t i o n C o n t i n U e s !

The students of Greater New Bedford Regional Vocational Technical High School

arrived at the Lloyd Center in the spring of 2017 to prepare for constructing the

Living Building ChallengeTM Welcome Center, the second of our exciting facilities

projects. Spring entailed learning more about the Lloyd Center, the nature of the

building, and the site work that was already underway. Most importantly, it was

a comprehensive introduction to a construction process that exceeds other major

certifications for energy efficiency and green construction standards.

The Living Building ChallengeTM (LBCTM) requires that a building meet 20 very

strict imperatives in the categories of site, water, energy, health, materials, equity,

and beauty. Buildings cannot use materials from the “Red List” which contain

chemicals or chemical groups determined to be harmful to creatures, humans,

or the environment. It must be net positive energy, net positive water, and net

positive waste. Certification is only granted after a building has documented that

it has reached all requirements for 12 consecutive months. To date, only 11

buildings in the world have achieved certification.

Beginning in the fall of 2017, students have been involved in physically building

and installing all components of the LBCTM Welcome Center. In doing so, they

have been exposed to and mastered “green building” principals and techniques

which will be in high demand in their future construction, architectural, and

environmental design careers.

In other exciting Transforming A Legacy news for 2017, we have gratefully

welcomed new donors—raising the progress toward the $3M goal to more than

$2.6M. The Center also received $225,000, one of the highest 2017 grants from

the Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund (a program of the state of Massachusetts

administered through a collaborative agreement between MassDevelopment and

the Massachusetts Cultural Council), for the future renovation of the headquarters

and site improvements to enhance the Lloyd Center as a regional Biodiversity

Learning Center.

We continue to be very grateful to all the individuals, foundations, and corpora-

tions who have joined in our “transformation.”

To learn more about the Transforming A Legacy capital campaign, please contact the

Development Office at 508-990-0505 x12, or [email protected].

LLoyd Center, Greater new Bedford reGionaL VoCationaL

teChniCaL hiGh sChooL, and the CirCLe of Life by Stephen Demarest Rath

“The Child is father of the Man.”—William Wordsworth

During my interview with Kathryn Duff—lead architect at studio2sustain inc, and

designer of the new Welcome Center, Teaching Pavilion, and improvements to the

Foundation House at the Lloyd Center—she hit upon a principle that was very dear

to the founder, Karen Gallup Lloyd.

“For so many kids in this region, the Lloyd Center is their first introduction to science.

The Lloyd Center is responsible for that, opening little kids’ eyes; and, not only is

it the first time they hear the words research and scientist, but they also get to see

themselves as an important piece of the environment.”

In the 1980’s, Mrs. Lloyd was affiliated with the Children’s Museum on Gulf Road in

South Dartmouth, MA. It was there that she first displayed exhibits from the Lloyd

Center and began to organize field trips to the Center itself. What separates the Lloyd

Center from other organizations is that she encouraged people to bond emotionally

with nature, and it continues to be one of the greatest qualities of the Lloyd Center

today. An emotional connection with nature inspires students to learn about the

environment and actually become engaged in the research. Nowadays, even a casual

glance through a Lloyd Center newsletter, or visit to the blog, shows pictures of children

on nearly every page engaged in educational activities that involve live creature

exhibits, classes at the newly constructed Teaching Pavilion, and hikes on the Lloyd

Center trails. Ms. Duff estimates that over 13,000 students visit the Center annually

and explains:

“Karen wasn’t going to create a Center that was strictly about research. It became

a learning center for all. So it was not just for scientists but also for members of the

community. Community development was the heart and soul of the original mission.

Nothing ivory tower about it.”

It is no coincidence, then, that some of the children who visited the Lloyd Center

as day campers in the past are now enrolled in the Greater New Bedford Regional

Vocational Technical High School (GNB Voc-Tech). As juniors and seniors in high

school, they play a crucial role in the construction of the new Welcome Center. It is

also important to note that while the Lloyd Center hired contractors (Chris Manlove

of Swanson Construction Co., Inc., Vermont Eco-Floors and Northeast Decorative

Concrete, LLC) to prepare the foundation and slabs, the students are responsible for

constructing the entire building. This includes: wiring, mechanical system, insulation,

windows, metal roof, and part of the solar panel system on the roof. With evident

pride, Kathryn says:

18 19

“The GNB Voc-Tech doesn’t do site work because they don’t have heavy equipment

to do that. But other than that, they do the whole building. They even paint and do

all the finishes. So, the scope of their work is really impressive, not to mention how

organized they are when they take on a project.”

Moreover, the students at GNB Voc-Tech are also contributing their skills to making

pieces of the building, e.g., the bike racks, the concrete sink, hand washing station,

and the benches in the plaza for sitting. These components engage the students

according to their different learning styles and match them to projects that promote

their skills, Ms. Duff explains:

“Those students who are super-gifted with their hands, or that think visually, or who

might be very artistic, will end up working on projects that showcase those abilities.

For example: the one with artistic intelligence might end up working on the inter-

pretative bike racks; or the engineering student from the electrical program might be

the one who gets involved with wiring up and balancing the very high performance

ventilation system; or the student of computer science will be the one who hooks

up the solar array system display. I see it as a collaboration where students find their

wheelhouse, if you will—not just in the building, but also in life.”

When the Welcome Center is completed, it will showcase the blending of humans

with the environment. The interior doors and wall panels will be indigenous black

oak that was harvested from the site, or “reformatted,” as Ms. Duff likes to say. And

the experience of the building will be such that “when you’re inside, you’re outside,

so the building is nature.” Ms. Duff adds:

“We put everything on display. We don’t say that somewhere over there is a solar

panel, and over here is the outlet. We actually show the solar panel, we show the

piping, how we store it, and how much energy in terms of wattage is being stored in

real time by the sun hitting the solar panels. So you can quantify and qualify in that

moment the experience of the environment. It all becomes part of the celebration of

the environment at work.”

“When will it be completed?” I ask.

“We have purchased the materials,” she replies. “And the students have been working

for much of their 2017-2018 school year. After the summer break, they will return to

finish the building and we’ll wind up completion in 2018-2019.”

Those children who visited the Lloyd Center years ago—and who are now involved

in the building of the Welcome Center—will have much to be proud of in the coming

year. Bravo!

Special thanks to the “Barney’s

Joy family” for their continued

generosity in allowing countless

thousands of children to have

their first experience with the

true wonders of “where the

land meets the sea”, through

a Lloyd Center program which

took them to that special part

of the world.

The Lloyd Center for the Environment

is excited to announce the receipt of a

$50,000 matching grant from the Saquish

Foundation. This generous grant will

make a significant difference in the lives

of the children that the Lloyd Center aims

to reach through the development and

implementation of quality science edu-

cation programs in the Alfred J. Gomes

Elementary School (New Bedford Public

Schools). Supporting the Lloyd Center’s

science programs since 2014, the Saquish

Foundation has made it possible for the

Center to continue into a second pilot

year at the Gomes School which means

a full implementation of the Gomes

Initiative.

“We are thrilled to have the generous

support of the Saquish Foundation in

this important initiative. It has been an

absolute pleasure for our staff to have

this opportunity to work with the Gomes

School Community,” Lloyd Center

Executive Director Rachel Stronach

commented enthusiastically.

In the first year pilot of the Gomes

Initiative, Lloyd Center educators worked

with the Gomes Elementary School

administration and teachers to identify

key topics at each grade level in line with

the newly adopted Massachusetts Science

and Technology/Engineering Standards.

Educators developed programs, coordi-

nated program schedules with Gomes

administration and teachers (in-school and

for field trips), designed and implemented

professional development for teachers,

and piloted a selection of programs

throughout the school year.

In this first year, all second grade class-

rooms participated in a one hour-long

program of ‘Estuary and Whales’ with

live estuary organisms sparking student

interest and aiding in teaching habitats.

Fourth grade students participated in the

Lloyd Center’s Feathery Focus Program

(in-class sessions and a field trip to the

Lloyd Center). Feathery Focus provides

elementary students and teachers with

hands-on activities that introduce the

dynamic and complex ecology of birds.

Feathery Focus promotes critical

thinking, inquiry, and self-discovery.

Fifth grade students participated in the

Center’s Climate Science Learning Project

(CSLP) which consists of three in-class

sessions, and a field trip to a private field

site in May/June. The Lloyd Center’s

CSLP focuses on the projected effects

of climate change on local biodiversity,

introducing age-appropriate math,

writing, critical thinking and life skills

into core climate science lessons.

Now in the second pilot year, with full

implementation, programs have been

developed and selected in collaboration

with the Gomes School Leadership Team

to compliment the scope and sequence

of their curriculum.
