A user guide or a typeace aint superuous as atypeace became a sotware package more than

eer. Most issues speak or itsel, as a user you dontwanna worry about Unicode support, language sup-port, OpenType ormats and all that. It all speaksor itsel. As you wish: it just works.

This is true or most important aspects o the type-aces. But here is a little explanation to point out thehidden corners o the ont sotware. Explaining thedesign decisions behind the type amily, might pro-ide a better understanding. And might make youloe Liza een better.

Technical detailsLiza Pro comes in the OpenType ont ormat (.ot ex-tension). This has 3 adantages:

1) cross platorm, same fle on Mac & PC2) Unicode support, broad language support3) erotic OpenType layout eatures

An OpenType say application is required to use the

sexy magic o Liza. Adobe CS, QuarkXpress, thosekind o applications will use Liza to the max. Otherapplications like MS Word will treat this typeaceas any other ordinary PostScript Type 1 or TrueTypetypeace. No magic, just a thorough script typeace.

How Pro is Liza?In general Liza has a powerul behaiour by deault.

Liza has an optimal behaiour without actiatingany o the adanced OpenType-eatures (nobodywants to worry about that). Liza is build in such away that almost all the magic happens by actiat-ing these two eatures. Most current and uture ap-plications will hae the Ligatures and ContextualAlternates OpenType eatures actiated by deault(only a couple o ery specifc aspects are not parto the Ligatures or Contextual Alternates eature,and hae been put under other OpenType eatures,like Discretionary Ligatures. This is all explained

urther on in this document).

All Liza Pro onts are equipped with basic OpenTypeeatures, like dierent numeral styles, ractions, supe-rior and ineriors, numerator and denominators. Butthe real horse power comes rom other eatures, spe-cifcally made to sere the design o each typeace. All

three typeaces ocus on dierent typographic possi-bilities. Thereore they all hae their own typographiceatures.

Liza Display Pro is meant or short headlines, justa couple o words which hae to catch all attention.Shell swash up your text drastically, giing longstrokes to letters i their context allows. Youll seelong ascenders, long crossbars o a t, long loops o ay, etc. rotique maximale!

Liza Text Pro has a more moderate character than herDisplay sister. I you plan to set longer pieces o textin a script typeace, youre not yearning or extremeisual eects. Instead, Liza Text Pro has more alter-nates or each glyph compared to Liza Display Pro,giing more subtle ariations. rotique non-stop!

Liza Caps Pro oers additional possibilities to thescript onts. O course eery letter can appear in ari-ous shapes to obtain the manual lettering eeling, butshes equipped with a higher IQ than you would ex-

pect. rotique proessionnellement!

Please note: this list gives an overview o the important ea-

tures. You wont be able to select or activate them in your

application. Technically speaking, these eatures are all

part o the Contextual Alternates or Ligatures eature.

Ookfu Damn, I'm out of ink*Liza contains a eature which simulatesreal-lie characteristics o sign painting. At acertain moment youre out o ink, and you haeto dip the brush in the ink again. Three reasons to use the Glyph paletteO course Liza Display Pro is equipped with all the extragalacticOpenType eatures, but we won't explain them in eery detail.

The most powerul thing to remember: use the Glyph palette inyour application (like Illustrator, QuarkXPress or InDesign).

1Manually pick an alternateI you don't like a specifc character, change it yoursel.

Characters always have a couple alternates some-

times up to 15 dierent shapes. Play around.

FlexCapsThe shape o the capitals depends on their context.

There are 2 atmospheres or capitals: timid and very

swashy (in Liza Display Pro the atmosphere ranges

rom very swashy to extremely swashy).

FlexCaps go automatically. You dont have to do a thing

to make them work. However, or better control, a

stylistic set has been implemented (FlexSentenceCaps,

explained on the next page).

AccentLoerThere are more alternates o the caps than only the

FlexCaps variatons. Some glyphs only appear when being

ollowed by accented characters. Thats not only very

common in French, but also in many Eastern European

languages. Liza loves the accents.

Use Stylistic Sets (in the OpenType menu)The Liza-User-Extremiste can hae a better control o

capital behaiour with a Stylistic Set.

Liza Text Pro will choose a capital which fts to the com-plete word. This goes automatically and is called FlexCaps.Howeer, in some situations you might wanna control thebehaiour o the capitals. In that case, use Stylistic Set 01(FlexSentenceCaps).

FlexSentenceCapsFlexSentenceCaps makes the frst capital o a sentenceery big, and takes a smaller ariation or all other capitals.

PenetratorThe Penetrator balances frst and

last letters o words. It takes care

that repeating glyph shapes in

longer pieces o text are being

avoided.

The L in the magniying glass is

specifcally designed to appear at

the beginning o a word only. But in

case this shape would appear every

time at the beginning o every

word starting with an L, the text

wouldnt look handmade anymore.

The Penetrator takes care o this, it

fne-tunes the Introducer & Final-

izer and simultaneously works sideby side with other eatures like the

LetterMixer.

o {& te?}UPPERCASE lowercaseUppercase characters have a dierent style than lowercase. A text set in upper-case characters will look trs chique, more stylish, has a more gentle upperclassbehaviour. Lowercase characters are more the party crackers, having un all

around, and will look more casual. The upper case characters are designed as very

large initials, and to be used sparsely.

AutoPunkAutomatic punctuation. The IQ o Liza Caps Pro makes sure that all other charac-

ters (like numbers, punctuations and quotations) automatically ft to surrounding

upper- or lowercase characters. Depending on their position/context, these char-

acters turn big or small. It probably wont catch your attention. Just type lower-

case and caps like you always do, and Liza Caps Pro will take care the rest fts in.

Stylistic SetsSome applications (like InDesign) support Stylistic Sets.They can be accessed through the OpenType menu (see page 16).

Stylistic Set 01 (No ascenders lowercase):

In some cases you might need a tight line setting, without any ascendersor descenders. Actiate Stylistic Set 01 i you already hae All Small Capsactiated, but still get trouble with the ascenders o q and j.

ae(with ss01) Stylistic Set 02 (Non swashy capitals):

Some applications start to act strangely i you hae OpenType eaturesactiated, and at the same moment change the tracking. Its not possibleto defne the relation o tracking and eature-behaiour inside an OpenTypeont. This can gie undesired results in some cases. For example: a text allset in Liza Caps Pro, all capitals, will automatically look nice with delicate

letterorms:

Once you add eg. 400 units o tracking in InDesign (eg. CS4), the ContextualAlternates eature gets switched o automatically. The text turns into allswashy capitals. Those kind o initials are nice when used in the beginning o

a word, but not when the complete text is set out o them:

C R I T I Q U EIn such a specifc case, where you want to presere that big amount o track-ing, Stylistic Set 02 will help you out and will turn your text into less swashy,more moderate caps:

Stylistic Set 03 (Make sensitive characters BIG):

In case you wanna control the AutoPunk-eature (page 20) manually, you canselect specifc characters and actiate Stylistic Set 03. This wi ll enlarge allthose characters o Liza Caps Pro which relate to the size o capitals or lower-case (like numbers, punctuation, quotation, etc). In case you wanna hae theopposite (make sensitie characters small), just select them and deactiatethe Contextual Alternates.
