We hope that all of these lead us to live our mission to Love God. Love Others. Make Disciples of Jesus Christ.

OUR LADY OF THE LAKE CATHOLIC CHURCHThe Epiphany of the Lord

Do you have a small group of friends with whom you are able to share life’s moments, joys and struggles, family events, and insights on the world near and far? Such friends are a treasure as we count on them to help us keep balance and perspective on life.

Social media apps like Facebook, Instagram and Twitter have greatly expanded our notion of “friends” who receive notices of our widely-shared events, photos and experiences. We can know a great deal of information about a number of people – family members and personal friends - through these apps. However, our true friends in life are those special persons with whom we can share soulful moments of faith and life experiences. These relationships are priceless.

Building a Culture of Small Groups

Our Pastoral Council has set a strategic goal for our parish to increase the number and type of small groups that regularly meet to share experiences of God, faith and living as disciples. Why small groups? First, to understand, “Small Groups” is the term we use to refer to the regular gathering of people to share faith and to experience Catholic community and mission beyond Sunday Mass.

At Mass, whether on Sundays or weekdays, we gather and participate with the larger community but don’t really have an opportunity to talk about our faith questions or to reflect upon or discuss how our faith applies to real life situations. Small groups provide that chance to share and live our faith with others with whom we meet on a consistent basis. Our

Living Our Faith in Small Groupsgoal is to make “small groups” part of the fabric of OLL parish life.

We currently have a number of parish small groups that meet regularly, but we want more parishioners and also new parish members to have the opportunity to join or establish a small group for faith sharing. Some small groups might

meet by location in an area; others by day of the week or time of day; and still others might form

by particular life circumstances (e.g. “empty-nesters” or moms with young children).

First Steps

We took the first step toward building a culture of small groups this past July with a Parish Visioning Seminar held in collaboration with St. Anthony Parish in Tigard. We invited John

Poitevant, a staff member from the Parish Catalyst organization, to lead us

through some of the key elements of small group development.

On Saturday, January 12, from 9:00 AM until noon, a number of OLL parishioners will be meeting to apply those principles to our local context and establish a game plan for small group development to launch this March in time for Lent.

Our Small Group initiative aligns with our efforts to increase the number and types of retreat experiences available to adults, as well as other opportunities to learn and grow in faith including our Sunday morning Focus on Faith sessions, and our Bible studies. We hope that all of these lead us to live our mission to Love God. Love Others. Make Disciples of Jesus Christ.

The Epiphany of the LordBlessing your home with chalk

An Epiphany custom is to bless your home, using chalk to write 20 + C + M + B + 19 above the main doorway. The number of the New Year, 2019, is split at the beginning and the end. C, M, and B are the initials of Caspar, Melchior, and Balthasar, the traditional names of the three Magi. The initials also represent the Latin Christus mansionem benedicat, “May Christ bless this house.”

To bless your home, gather your family and sing “We Three Kings of Orient Are.” Then read Matthew 2:1-12.

As you write the numbers on the doorway to your home, pray: “May Christ bless this house.”

Envelopes with chalk and these instructions are available for you to take home today. You’ll find them in baskets at the en-trances/exits to the church.

Prayer after Communion on Epiphany

Go before us with heavenly light, O Lord, always and everywhere,

that we may perceive with clear sightand revere with true affectionthe mystery in which you have

willed us to participate.Through Christ our Lord. Amen

“Awakening Faith” - Enliven Your Catholic Faith Awakening Faith invites you to meet with fellow inquirers to discuss your faith. The program encourages conversation between people in a small-group setting.

We meet in the Parish Library, on the second floor of the Parish Center, every Thursday, beginning this week on January 10, 2019, 7:00 to 8:30 PM. We gather for six sessions, followed by four ‘optional sessions’. The sessions are on Spirituality, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, God’s Mercy, Mass, and the Church.

Get more information about Awakening Faith at ollparish.com, come to the first session, or contact Margaret Jamieson by phone (503-635-2915) or email ([email protected]).

Weekdays: The regular parish programs listed above will follow the morning snow closure and bad weather directions of the Lake Oswego School District. When the Lake Oswego schools are closed, the programs listed above will be closed.

Weekends or evenings: If there is a sudden change in the weather during the day, or the program meets in the evening or on a weekend, the Program Director or group organizer of the respective programs will make the decision as to the closure based upon consideration of the different areas surrounding OLL. The Program Director will also initiate the process of notifying people. If you are not sure if a program is cancelled, please call the office at 503-636-7687 for closure information.

Mass: Mass in Church will not be cancelled for weather emergencies. We will celebrate Mass with whatever ministers and people attend. How Literature Informs Our Faith Seventh Annual OLL Women’s Retreat

Join other women from Our Lady of the Lake and the surrounding community for the Seventh An-nual OLL Women’s Retreat Febru-ary 22-25, 2019. The retreat will feature Father Charles Gordon, C.S.C. Last year’s participants were so impressed by Fr. Gordon’s

presentation that we have asked him to return in February to facilitate again. The theme is: How Literature Informs Our Faith. Fr. Gordon’s vast knowledge of literature will make our weekend as spiritually enriching as he did last year.

Since we are offering multiple women’s retreats this year, it is difficult to predict our attendance, and we need to know for the setup of our venue. Please register by January 22 if you plan to attend. You may register on line at www.ollparish.com/retreats. Or you can call the parish office at 503-636-7687 and they can help your register. For more information contact Pia at 503-341-6810.

The retreat is a safe and compassionate environment! Financial assistance is available.
