An American physiatrist and physician named Leon Goldensohn was in charge of the mental health of these prisoners during the trial. He spent some time with the prisoners nearly every day. He also took extensive notes about his conversations with them in their cells.

Perhaps the most chilling notes came from the time he talked with Rudolph Hoess, an SS Lieutenant Colonel and the commandant of the most notorious of all the Nazi camps, Auschwitz. When asked about how he could oversee the murder of more than a million people, of all ages, infants and children, Hoess said that, though he didn’t like it, “I thought I was doing the right thing.” The right thing? Amazing, isn’t it? To think that something like that could be considered the “right thing.”

What this terrible story should tell us about is the power of belief. We all believe in something. Unless you are asleep, in a coma, or dead, you believe in something. Atheists, agnostics, skeptics all believe in something. Even the person who says you can’t believe in anything believes at least that. No question, we all have beliefs. The hard part is coming to know if those beliefs are “the right thing.”

ILLUSTRATION: A professor announced to a new class of medical students: “I have good news and bad news: The good news is that half of the material you learn in medical school will survive all scrutiny and investigation. It will be enduring. The other half of what we teach you, however, will be proven incorrect. The bad news is we have no way of knowing which half is which!”

In today’s world it’s sometimes difficult to know what to believe about much of the information we’re given, especially when it comes to medical science and what is good for your health and what is not good for it. After all, one day we read that drinking alcohol is harmful. The next week, other reports indicate that it’s protective of good health.

Chocolate is fattening, right? Wait a minute—now a research group has reported that it actually helps people lose weight. Coffee is harmful, we’ve been told. But then we learn that, in a significant study, those who drank large amounts of coffee lived longer. And one week, a major tech company introduces another time-saving, “must have” device; the next week, the media reports those claims as based on unreliable analyses.

In what or whom can we truly believe? Sometimes determining the answer to this question is tough. And as we saw with the terrible example of Hoess, wrong beliefs can have some horrific consequences.

ILLUSTRATION: One day a physician was examining a patient who complained about a myriad of symptoms, unrelated to any known syndrome or disease complex. The patient told the doctor that perhaps an evil spell had been cast on him and was making him ill. The doctor then took two small glass tubes and filled one with hydrogen peroxide and the other with water. The patient didn’t know the two liquids were different. The physician then drew a small amount of blood from the patient and put a few drops into the tube with the hydrogen peroxide. Naturally, there was an immediate reaction of effervescence, and the doctor knowingly nodded. “Ah-ha,” he said, “you will benefit from this.” He then gave the patient a saline injection and told him to sit in the waiting room.

After a short time, the doctor called the patient back into his office and again drew a small amount of blood, this time putting a few drops into the tube containing plain water. As expected, it mixed without any reaction. The doctor told the patient that the evil spell had been broken, and the patient left feeling immensely better. The story goes that the patient told all his friends about how he had been healed, and many of them came to the doctor wanting the same treatment! Now regardless of whether you think what the physician did was right or wrong, this story demonstrates that there is tremendous power in belief. This shouldn’t be surprising, should it?

After all, our brains are part of our bodies, and what affects one affects the other. We see this all the time, right? After all, a person puts alcohol into his or her stomach—and what happens? Very quickly the brain, the mind, the thought patterns are changed. How many people have done terrible, terrible things under the influence of alcohol, or other drugs, that they never would have done otherwise? Yes, what they put into their bodies impacted, in a big way, their minds.

We don’t need to poison ourselves with alcohol to know just how closely tied our minds and thoughts are with our bodies. What happens if you see something that frightens you? Of course, you feel it in your body, right? Your heart starts racing. You might even jump or shout. You start sweating. All this comes from what is going on in your mind. Anyone with even the smallest knowledge of human anatomy and physiology should understand, to some degree, the link between the body and the mind. And that’s because we all know that our brain is part of our body. Our brain is connected to the rest of our body in ways that most other organs aren’t. There’s a vast network of nerves that runs all through our body and that is linked back to the brain. Thus, how could what impacts our body not impact our brain, and vice versa?

Also, putting aside physiology, there’s theology, as well. Many Christians, and others, believe in an immortal soul. They believe that we have this non-material force in us, something that kind of lodges in our heads and that, when we die, this force—this conscious soul—is released. And, as we know too, many believe that when we die, if we are saved, this non-material soul goes right off to the bliss of heaven. If we aren’t saved, this soul goes off to the torments of hell. And, of course, these torments must go on eternally because, well, the soul itself, in this thinking, is eternal.

Now, were this true, then the link between the mind and the body would not be as strong as it would be otherwise. If true, there would be a crucial part of us that is non-material—non-flesh and bone and blood and cells. Essentially, our whole consciousness would be, in a big way, not fully connected with our bodies.

Now, this sermon is about health and the relationship of our beliefs to our health. And though the question of the soul is a very important topic, one definitely worthy of our study, this isn’t the time and the place to debate the immortality or the

non-immortality soul and what happens at death. We are now interested in life and how to live the best kind of life now, with the best possible health. And central to the idea of a good life, of good health, is our beliefs. What goes on in our minds. And that’s because, what goes on in our minds greatly impacts what goes on in our bodies.

Proverbs 17:22 says, “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones” (KJV). In the Old Testament, there wasn’t this division between the heart and mind as we often think of—the heart being the emotions and the mind being rational thought. The Bible teaches a very unified and holistic view of the human person and does not make that kind of distinction. And what this verse does show is that, indeed, belief can impact our health, either for good or for bad. And what’s fascinating, too, is that scientific research is starting to show us this very same thing.

Belief—or faith, within a religious setting—has been shown to have statistically significant health benefits. When the religious experience of Americans who reached the age of 100 was studied, researchers found that religiosity, or being devout, significantly enhanced health. Although many questions are still unanswered, the benefits of trust in God result from more than simply attending religious services.

A study comparing mortality rates between secular and religious Israelis found a decreased mortality rate over a 15-year follow-up in the religious group. The age-adjusted risk of premature death of non-religious Israelis was 1.8 times higher for males and 2.7 times higher for females when compared with the religious ones. The religious simply lived longer than did the non-religious ones.

A study of African-Americans found that those who engaged in organized religious activities had improved health and life satisfaction. One researcher found that a lack of religious affiliation increases the risk of depression in African-Americans. One of the most consistent findings across all racial groups is that spirituality profoundly improves the quality of life. Research describes these significant benefits, brought about by exercising faith: religious attendance and private devotion strengthen a person’s religious belief system. Strong religious systems, when accompanied by a high level of religious certainty, or spirituality, have a substantial and positive influence on wellbeing. Individuals with strong religious faith report higher levels of life satisfaction, greater personal happiness, and fewer negative psychosocial consequences of traumatic life events.

Should any of this be surprising to us? I don’t think so. Also, spirituality helps not only believers but also benefits the nonbelievers in their community. Research has found that communities gain health benefits when they have higher numbers of adherents to faiths that emphasize implicit obedience to God and His standards of conduct. The reason that nonbelievers are benefitted, as well, is likely that their social norms favor conformity to the more healthful lifestyle embraced by their religious neighbors.

Religious people—particularly adolescents from religious homes, who frequently attend religious services, pray, and read Scripture—have fewer problems with alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs than do their nonreligious peers. Religion was also positively associated with emotionally healthful values and socially accepted behaviors, such as tutoring or other volunteer activities, often promoted by religious organizations.

What is the point? It’s simple. Studies show that belief in a loving God produces a very positive and powerful health-promoting state of mind. There is nothing more reassuring than the peace and satisfaction experienced by those who place their lives in the hands of a loving God and who are aware of His love for them. This brings health, happiness, and a sense of purpose.

As the Bible says, “Those who love your instructions have great peace and do not stumble” (Ps. 119:165, NLT). In fact, belief in God may be associated with reduction in stress, depression, and loneliness. A 1990 Gallup poll revealed that more than 36 percent of Americans live with chronic feelings of loneliness.

According to a Princeton University Research Associates survey, at least two thirds of Americans feel stressed at least once a week. Stress, loneliness, and related depression can have serious consequences

Between 75 and 90 percent of all doctor visits contain components relating to stress. That’s right: up to 90 percent of doctor visits have components related to stress! Yes, our minds do affect our bodies and powerfully, too.

Medical science has discovered that when you feel stressed as a result of facing challenges, the negative emotions trigger the release of certain hormones that stimulate the nervous system in such a way as to put stress on the various organs of the body. If these organs are subjected to stress over long periods of time, they become weakened. Once weakened, they are more susceptible to a variety of disease processes. The order and intensity with which organs are affected depend upon the person’s heredity, constitution, environment, and lifestyle.

For example: Stress may cause the release of adrenaline, making the heartbeat occur more rapidly and powerfully. Such stress can cause one to suffer from heart palpitations (unusually or abnormally rapid or violent beatings of the heart). When stress hormones cause the blood vessels to constrict, they may augment, or increase, the effects of hypertension and cause diminished peripheral vascular flow, leading to cold hands and feet.

Stress may induce shallow and rapid breathing with bronchial dilation, which causes hyperventilation. Stress results in diversion of the blood supply away from the digestive system, possibly affecting digestive processes. Stress induces a state of increased clotting of the blood; though protective in some circumstances, increased clotting could have detrimental effects in others. Stress causes an increase in blood glucose, or blood sugar; in those predisposed to diabetes, chronic stress may lead to the hastening of the onset, or exacerbation, of diabetes. Stress may cause alterations in gastrointestinal and urinary functions.

Some may suffer from urinary frequency and irritable bowel syndrome. A stressed person may visit the doctor for numerous physical complaints and suffer from emotional disorders, such as anxiety, depression, phobias, cognitive disorders, memory problems, and sleep disorders. The point of all this is that stress is definitely not good for our health.

In fact, there’s a story in the Old Testament that shows just how much it can impact our bodies. It’s the story of Eli, in the days of ancient Israel, and the trouble he had with his two sons, terrible young men who did terrible things. Let’s just listen to these few texts. They explain it all: “Now Eli was ninety and eight years old; and his eyes were dim, that he could not see. And the [messenger] said unto Eli,

I am he that came out of the army, and I fled to day out of the army. And he said, What is there done, my son?

And the messenger answered and said, Israel is fled before the Philistines, and there hath been also a great slaughter among the people,

and thy two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God is taken. And it came to pass…

…when [the messenger] made mention of the ark of God, that [Eli] fell from off the seat backward by the side of the gate, and his neck brake, and he died” (I Sam. 4:15-18, KJV). Seems as if Eli was more concerned about the fate of the Ark than the fate of his sons. But the point is that what he heard caused him to fall backwards. Whether he had a heart attack, or fainted, the text doesn’t say. What is clear is that the stress of the situation had a very real and powerful impact on him

Ok, even if we all realize the reality of what stress can do to our bodies, the next question is: What can we about it? After all, who doesn’t live with a certain amount of stress?

Well, for one, there is prayer. One study examined the effects of prayer on wellbeing. Of the 560 respondents, 95 percent classified themselves as religious people; 54 percent were Protestants and 25 percent Catholics.

Four types of prayer were identified: Petitionary prayer: asking for material things you may need. Ritual prayer: reading the book of prayers. Meditative prayer: “feeling,” or being, in God’s presence. Colloquial prayer: talking to God as to a Friend and asking Him for guidance in making decisions. Of all these types of prayer, this study revealed that colloquial prayer correlates best with happiness and religious satisfaction, whereas ritual prayer was associated with a negative effect, producing feelings all the more sad, lonely, tense, and fearful.

Talking to God as to a Friend, telling Him all our joys and sorrows, can bring happiness, healing, and religious satisfaction. So important is the role of prayer in healing that one leading physician, Dr. Larry Dossey, said, “I decided that not to employ prayer with my patients was the equivalent of withholding a potent drug or surgical procedure.”—L. Dossey, Healing Words: The Power of Prayer and the Practice of Medicine (New York: HarperCollins Publisher, 1993), page 18.Did you catch that? That’s quite a statement about the power of prayer to help us through whatever ails us.

Many people have tried to solve their problems of stress through yoga, secular meditation, or some similar internalized program of self-empowerment; however, these methods do not have the same effectiveness as prayer. In many cases, they are techniques of self-hypnosis. Most civilizations have been founded on a set of beliefs and moral values that lead to an orderly society. Throughout the centuries, belief in spiritual values has been a strong motivator to treat others well and to develop peaceful human relationships. History demonstrates that faithless and amoral societies become so corrupt that they cannot survive.

But this isn’t blind faith. Belief is fundamental to science, as well as to religion. Just as faith in a scientific principle is verified, faith in God is validated when tests show that its application leads to correct conclusions and brings satisfying results. Studies indicate that those with regular spiritual practices, who meet with a faith community, live longer, live better, and are far less likely to have a stroke or heart attack. Faith can provide strength to overcome stress and destructive habits. Belief can give you peace of mind and enable you to reach your full potential through positive choices. Celebrate belief—it is the foundation of life!

The Bible says, “You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you!” (Isa. 26:3, NLT). When we have a close relationship with God, we experience peace of mind. This does not mean that those who believe in God and trust Him implicitly will be free from problems. On the contrary. I think we all know better than that.

After all, if there ever were a man of faith, it was the apostle Paul. And, certainly, his life was not free from trouble, was it? “Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was pelted with stones,

three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea, I have been constantly on the move.

I have been in danger from rivers, in danger from bandits, in danger from my fellow Jews, in danger from Gentiles;

in danger in the city, in danger in the country, in danger at sea; and in danger from false believers.

I have labored and toiled and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food;

I have been cold and naked. Besides everything else, I face daily the pressure of my concern for all the churches” (2 Cor. 11:24-28, NIV). That’s hardly a life free from turmoil, is it?

And yet what else did Paul write? “I am not saying this because I am in need, for I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.

I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation,

whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength” (Phil. 4:11-13, NIV). Yes, Paul had troubles, but Paul also had faith, a belief in Jesus. Paul knew that Jesus Christ died for his sins. And though Paul had been a sinner, even complicit in the death of followers of Jesus, Paul knew the meaning of grace. Paul understood what salvation was about. Paul knew for himself the love of God as revealed at the cross. Paul could rest in the assurance of salvation, not because of his own works but because of what Jesus had done for him.

And this belief, this understanding, helped give him the peace that he so often talked about, such as when he wrote: “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;

and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus” (Phil. 4:6, 7, NKJV). That peace came from Jesus and from believing in Jesus.

No wonder Ellen White tells us, “Trouble and turmoil may surround us, yet we enjoy a calmness and peace of mind of which the world knows nothing.

This inward peace is reflected in a vigorous, glowing experience that stimulates all with whom we come in contact.

The peace of the Christian depends not upon peaceful conditions in the world about him but upon the indwelling of the Spirit of God.”—The SDA Bible Commentary, vol. 4 page 203.

Let’s end with this, from nineteenth-century evangelist Dwight L. Moody, who is quoted by many as saying: “Trust in yourself, and you are doomed to disappointment.

“But trust in God, and you will never be confounded in time or eternity.” Trusting in a loving, powerful God provides us with the ability to enjoy a healthful lifestyle. Belief and faith in God enables Him to fill our lives with abundant peace and joy, even amid trying circumstances. No question, what we believe matters, and matters greatly.
