There are two major Japanese language classes in Tsukuba City. One is provided by Tsukuba International Association and the other is by Keyaki no Kai. Both classes are six months per term, start in April and October and are open for adults. For more details, please contact below:

4▲Garbage▲Collection

Household garbage disposal is processed at Clean Center. Check “Tsukuba City Garbage Disposal Calendar”, City’s Website and “Guide to Sorting and Putting Out Garbage” booklet for further information. Please dispose of garbage at the designated garbage collection site before 8:00 a.m. according to the schedule and the sorting rules.Reservation is required to dispose of oversized garbage (when one edge is longer than 50cm) and it is charged. According to Home Appliance Recycling Act, air conditioners, TV sets (including CRT, liquid crystal and plasma types of TVs), refrigerators/freezers, washing machines, cloth dryers are not accepted by the city. The stores where you bought the appliance or you will buy a new one may collect them with charge. If you cannot find a shop to take over your appliance, Waste Management Division of City Hall introduces shops. The city does not collect those appliances above, so please do not leave them at city’s garbage collection sites.According to Law for Promotion of Effective Utilization of Resources, personal home computers and displays must be directly collected by the manufacturers when discarded. Contact the manufacturer for details. PC3R Promotion Association (Phone: 03-5282-7685) collects and recycls home-build-PCs. Contact them for more details. Please make sure that the city does not collect computers.

Reducing▲garbageUse the recycling boxes at supermarkets and department stores in the city for milk cartons and styrofoam food trays. Giving away things in good conditions and selling to recycling shops or at flea markets are good ways to reduce garbage. Many retailers in Tsukuba City are not distributing free plastic bags to stop the global warming by reducing garbage. Please bring your bag for shopping. Your cooperation will support

Tsuku-Bus is the city’s community bus and it has seven routes (Hokubu:North, Oda, Sakuoka, Yoshinuma, Nanbu:South, Jiyugaoka, Yatabe, shuttle). The buses are operated every day and the bus schedules are almost the same every day.Operating Time: Between 6:00 a.m.–10:00 p.m.Fare: ￥200/ ￥300/ ￥400 (depends on the distance)

sold at the fare of 10 tickets. There are three types of tickets: ￥500 (￥50 ×11 tickets) / ￥1000 (￥100×11) / ￥2000 (￥200×11)One-Day Pass: Unlimited ride for one day in all areas. Available and can be used on

weekends and holidays. ￥500 (￥250 for children)

●Transfer DiscountIf you transfer to and from Tsuku-Bus, local bus1 (①) and Tsuku-Taku (taxi)(②), the second bus fare will be maximum of ￥200. (③) Get a Transfer Ticket (noritsugi ken 乗

- Children up to 6th grade (Fare is free up to two preschool children accompanied by an adult. Third child is

required to pay the children’s fare. If a child rides on a bus alone, the children’s fare is required.

○ Apply for Discount Fare Certificate for Aged (koreisha unchin waribiki sho 高齢者運賃割引証 ) at Citizen’s Services Division and Senior Services Division of City Hall. Certificate is issued upon application.

3▲Tsuku-Taku▲(Tsukuba▲City▲Share-Ride▲Taxi)

Tsuku-Taku is City’s share-ride Taxi service. The city is divided into five areas and each area has taxi stands. You can ride a taxi from the taxi stand to another inside the area. There are seven transfer points where you can transfer to other area’s taxi, such as Tsukuba Station. It is convenient to use for shopping, visiting hospitals and etc.Note: Reservation and purchase of taxi tickets are required beforehandOperating Days: Weekdays (Note: Not in service on holidays and Dec.29 – Jan 3.)Operating Hours: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. (basically one operation / hour)Taxi Stand: Please refer to “Route Map / Fare Table”（つくタク乗降場所 / 料金表）,

which is available at City Hall and Community Centers.

10★Transportation

Picking up at Your Place: If you register, Tsuku-Taku picks you up at your place. Registration fee is ￥1,000. Please note that a taxi will drop you only at the designated point.

Registration: Registration Office Phone: 029-861-1266, Fax: 029-861-1020 Call the office and tell your name, the day, time and place you wish to use. Reservation is accepted from seven days prior to the scheduled date up to

30 minutes before using. If you wish to use Tsuku-Taku between 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., please make a reservation by the day before.

4▲Taxi

Taxi fare is determined by travel distance. The fare may vary depending on areas and companies. In Ibaraki, the first 2km (hatsunori 初乗り) is ￥730 and added ￥90 per 282 meters or ￥90 per minute 45 seconds when driven under 10km/h is added after the first 2km. There is a 20% surcharge between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.

big hospitals. If you cannot find a taxi stand nearby, raise or wave your hand to stop a taxi on the street.

Maternity▲Medical▲CheckupsThe city subsidizes a part of medical expenses for maternity checkups at most 14 times depending on the gestation period. You can get subsidies with the coupons for Maternity Medical Checkups (ninpu ippan kenko shinsa jushin hyo 妊婦一般健康診査受診票 ) in most of the medical institutions of obstetrics and gynecology in Ibaraki Prefecture. Please check at the reception of the facility if you can use the coupons or not. If you wish to get checkups outside Ibaraki (but inside Japan), you need to inform Health Promotion Division. Submit an application form of maternity checkups outside Ibaraki (kengai ninpu ippan kenko shinsa jushin shinsei sho 県外妊婦一般健康診査受診申請書 ) until two weeks before the day you get a checkup.

Birth▲NotificationSubmit a birth notification at Citizens Service Division within 14 days after the child was born. When notifying, a Birth Certificate (shussei shomei sho 出生証明書 ) and Mother


and Child Health Handbook (boshi kenko techo 母子健康手帳 ) are required. When you have completed the notification, apply for your child’s passport at the embassy or consulate with Certificate of Birth Notification Matters (shussei todoke kisai jiko shomei sho 出生届記載事項証明書 ) and Resident Certificate (jumin hyo tohon 住民票謄本 ), and acquire your baby’s resident status at the immigration bureau within 30 days.

Birth▲AllowanceIf you join a health insurance, you can receive Birth Allowance (shussan ikuji ichiji kin出産育児一時金 ) upon delivery including a stillbirth and miscarrying after 85 days of pregnancy. The allowance will be paid to each birth by your health insurance society. If you are a member of National Health Insurance, notify birth to National Health Insurance Division, and if other kind of insurance, notify at your work.

When you give a birth in Japan, an allowance will basically be paid directly to the medical institution from the insurance agency (according to the direct allowance payment system). You can receive an allowance in person if you wish. However, you are

If you are rearing a child whose parents are divorced or both or one of the parents are dead, you can receive Child Rearing Allowance until March 31 just after the 18th birthday (if a child is physically or mentally disabled, until age 19). Note that those who receive public pension such as old-age pension (rorei nenkin 老齢年金 ), disability pension (shougai nennkin 障害年金 ) and survivor’s pension (izoku nenkin 遺族年金 ), except for old age welfare annuity (rorei fukushi nenkin 老齢福祉年金 ) are exempted from receiving the allowance.If you wish to receive the allowance, get authorized at Children’s Services Division.

3▲Daycare▲Center▲(hoikusho 保育所▲/ hoikuen 保育園 )

Daycare Center (hoikujo 保育所 / hoikuen 保育園 ) is a facility to take care of children for certain hours when their both parents cannot take care of them at home because they are working, sick or have other reasons. If anybody can take care of a child at home, the child cannot be enrolled in a daycare center.There are 51 licensed daycare centers (23 public and 28 private) in the city as of April 2016.

How▲to▲applyChildren’s Services Division receives applications for licenced daycare centers, screens and authorizes enrollment, and collects childcare fees. Application can be received by 10th of the previous month of the month you wish to enroll your child. Submit the required documentations to Children’s Services Division by the appointed date. For enrollment of April, since most of parents wish to enroll, the place and the period to apply will be appointed. Details will be informed on the city’s bulletin (normally issued around October).Note that if there are more applicants than the capacity, there can be a case you cannot enroll your child in the daycare you request or cannot be authorized if your status does not meet the conditions under screenings.

- Document to determine the childcare fee*The childcare fee is determined by the total income amount of the household and the age of the child. One of the following is required to prove your household’s income: A copy of previous year’s Tax-income Certificate (gensen choshu hyo 源泉徴収票 ), Tax Declaration Certificate (kazei shomei sho 課税証明書 ) or Tax Exemption Certificate (hi kazei shomei sho 非課税証明書 ).

School▲System▲of▲Tsukuba▲CityJapanese school systems are basically six years for primary school, three years for junior high school, three years for high school and four years for university. There are also junior colleges, technical colleges and vocational schools. The school year begins on April 1 and ends on March 31. Primary schools and junior high schools are compulsory. In Tsukuba City, we combine primary schools and junior high schools so that we can provide consecutive education from grade one to nine effectively.
