Heaven’s Silent Singers will per-form Tuesday, July 16 at 12:00 p.m. During the week, we will be distributing gospel tracts, making balloon animals, and for the first time have a food booth. We held our Vacation Bible School from June 10 through June14 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.. Average attendance for the week was 22, with around 50 kids & parents together on our Friday Night closing. Our theme this year was Superheroes, focusing on

the power of God to help people to do the things that he has called them to do & on the greatest Super Hero: Jesus Christ. Activities for VBS included games, crafts, music, & the church also provides a full meal each night for the kids who attended. Regarding volunteer help, this was the best turn out for those wanting to help. Both adults & youth combined to make this VBS the best one yet. The church continues to set up at the First Friday event in downtown Glouster. We provide activities for

kids, but also enjoy spending time among the people of the community while listening to live music, eating good food, & drinking local coffee. A final word: The people of Glouster Baptist Church appreciate our partnership & financial support from Ebenezer Baptist Church. God is using this partner-ship to affect the community of Glouster. We would encourage the folks at EBC to come and visit, so that you can see first hand what the Lord is doing in this place. May the Lord strengthen & deepen our partner-

ship, so that the name of our God will be made great in Glouster, Trimble, Jacksonville, & the surrounding areas. Grace & peace to you all. Learn more about the ministry at Glouster Southern Baptist Church by contacting Pastor Phil Westen-barger.

“GIDDY UP” FOR VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL RECAP

This year’s Vacation Bible School was Monday, June 24 through Friday, June 28. Our theme this year was “Giddy Up Junction”. This year, we averaged142 kids per evening. Each night, children visited different “outpost” stations. There were Bible lessons, crafts, games, snacks, and visits from a couple of our missionaries. Thank you to all the parents, children, and volunteers for a fantastic week. Vacation Bible School is our biggest children’s

outreach of the year. A lot of dedication and hard work went into planting and watering the seeds of the gospel in the lives of the children who attended. This is why we do VBS. May God always get the glory!

Think of these examples. What about the heavenly tourism books/movies that have sold in the millions? Doesn’t this clue us in a little about ourselves? There is one main reason Christians support all of these books/movies. We want to know what Heaven is like.

I get it, but are the Biblical descriptions not enough? Does it matter that all of the heavenly tourism books contradict each other and the Scripture? What about wanting to have an experience while singing worship songs or when we pray? What do we conclude if the experience doesn’t happen? What is often demon-strated is our lack of contentment with the Biblical revelation. We want more and that can be danger-ous. Finally, think of Peter in the New Testament. He not only walked with Jesus as a disciple but also was an

eyewitness to the transfiguration of Christ (Matthew 17:1-8). That would be amazing to experience! How-ever, notice what Peter writes later on in his letter. He does not dismiss his experience but speaks of it, “we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

For when he re-

ceived honor and glory from God the Father, and the voice was borne to him by the Majestic Glory, ‘This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased,’ we ourselves heard this very voice borne from heaven, for we were with him on the holy mountain“ (2 Peter

1:16-18). Notice what Peter says next. “And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts, knowing this first of all, that no prophecy of Scripture comes from someone’s own interpretation. For no prophecy was ever produced by the will of man, but men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit” (1:19-21). See that, Peter shifts his reader’s attention to the Scripture not his experience. We seem to focus on the experi-

ence and ignore the Scripture. We would be wise to heed Peter’s words here. “We have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention.”

Merriam-Webstar, “Mysticism” https://www.merriam-

webster.com/dictionary/mysticism

Christianity has gone through many changes since

the 1800s. The shift from emotionalism brought about by Charles Finney (1800s) to now the rise of experientialism. This experience is not encountering God in His word, but an external experience. Profess-ing Christians have been drawing closer and closer (if not stepping over) the line into mysticism. What is mysticism? It is “the belief that direct knowledge of God, spiritual truth, or ultimate reality can be attained through subjective experience (such as intuition or insight)” See the problem? How is the “knowledge of God” or “spiritual truth” attained? It is “attained

through subjective experience (such as intuition or insight).” I am not denying that God does not miracu-lously heal someone or the encounters that many Muslims or those living in jungle isolation have experi-enced. Especially those that eventually result in their salvation. My concern is that experience becomes priority and overrides sound biblical theology that is derived from Scripture alone. That is the downfall of mystical ex-periences with God. It makes the experience itself the

test of truth. Think of Mormonism. They claim the Book of Mormon is true. How do they know this? They ask god and he tells them it is. Tell the Mormon he is wrong. Apart for the grace of God he will not believe you. Why? His god told him. His god con-vinced him. His experience with his god triumphs over everything else. He does not care what biblical texts you place before him, the experience is the stan-dard of truth not the Scripture. Haven’t we done the same thing?

The FAITH Evangelism ministry will begin a new six week semester Monday, August 19. During the next semester, we will examine common questions people have about the Bible and God. We will meet each week at 5:45 p.m. for a meal, study time and then make visits to those who

have visited our church, absentees, as well as Sunday school, and ministry visits. During our most recent semester, which was five weeks, we made 27 visits and 21 VBS contacts. Those participat-ing in this FAITH semester were Teresa Alvarez. Cliff Black-well, Steve Hubbard, Ron Guess, Jacob Link, Jeremiah Mar-tin, Jim Martin, Shawn Maynard, Carol McCann, Derek Mills, Lisa Mills, Tina Smathers, Brenda Snyder, Chuck Westenbarger, and Alex Wolfe. There are several ways to help with the FAITH Ministry. You can be on a FAITH team, take a turn preparing a meal

or baking six dozen cookies, and be a prayer partner. For more details, contact Jim Martin.

We are taking on a summer long project of updating our church’s landscaping. It has been about eight years since any landscaping updates have been done at the Main Campus. The last update was switching from mulch to stone which resulted in a significant

yearly savings. Through the years bushes and flower-ing plants have become overgrown. Over the last couple months, we have cut back spring flowering bushes for healthy regeneration and size control. We also added two weeping cedar trees to the front of the building. These trees will add height to the landscape and greenery year long. Here’s where you can help out: There will be sum-mer trimming and weeding that needs done in July. We are also needing someone to spray for weed con-trol as soon as possible There will be a final trim and

cut back to the landscaping in the fall. Volunteers are needed for those jobs. Our landscaping is one of the first things people see when they come to our church and we want to create a great first impression. The landscaping project would be a great ministry opportunity for your Sunday School/Life Group, ministry group or even as a group of friends. Contact Heather Dickerson to learn more about how you can help.
