In 1890, Reverend James Early had a vision to give the residents of a hard-

working farming community in upstate New York State the ability to live well

by providing them with good, quality health care. Today, his vision has trans-

formed from a single farmhouse hospital to a multiple-building, multi-million

dollar health care system serving thousands of people in and around Hornell,

New York.

Reverend Early’s vision not only enabled a rural farming community to live well

by giving them access to quality healthcare – through the years, it has become

a healthcare haven for doctors, nurses, technicians and other medical personnel

seeking a progressive professional setting without the hustle and bustle of a big

city hospital atmosphere – seeking a place to live well.

But don’t be fooled by St. James Mercy’s idyllic countryside setting. Th is rural

hospital may be small in size, but it is big on products and services.

With 232 beds, St. James Mercy is equipped to treat thousands of patients

in the area with services including, but not limited to, primary care, intensive

care, diagnostic imaging, emergency, surgical, obstetrics and gynecology, dialy-

sis, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation, sleep disorder studies, physical and

occupational therapy and long-term care. In addition to the hospital and nurs-

ing home, St. James Mercy has 13 satellite clinics serving outlying areas. It also

operates a School of Radiologic Science to train and certify students as radiogra-

phers, and extensive behavioral health services, including inpatient and outpa-

tient drug and alcohol dependency programs, inpatient adult and adolescent

psychiatric care and psychiatric day treatment. From a wide array of acute care

services to wellness and prevention services (through its partnership with the

Wellness Council of the Southern Tier), SJM off ers extensive cancer screening

and wellness initiatives. St. James Mercy employs more than 900 people and has

60 physicians on its medical staff .

Best of all, it is located just “down the road” from two major metropolitan cities

– Rochester and Buff alo. Between their wide array of minor and major sports

teams to their vast variety of nationally renowned museums, colleges and uni-

versities, not to mention two glorious Great Lakes (Lake Ontario and Lake Erie)

and the vast Finger Lakes recreational resources, these nearby cities give you

even more reason to live well while you work well at St. James Mercy.

WellConnectedSt. James Mercy is not only well equipped with some of the

highest caliber teams of professionals and wide range of services and technol-

ogies, it is also well connected. Sponsored by the Sisters of Mercy, St. James

Mercy is a member of one of the nation’s largest health care systems, Catholic

Health East (CHE). Employing 50,000 people up and down the East Coast,

Catholic Health East’s ministry includes 32 acute care hospitals, numerous

long term and continuing care, behavioral health and rehabilitation facilities,

health/hospice agencies and ambulatory and community-based health

services.

In addition to its CHE affi liation, St. James Mercy is also strongly connected

with a variety of highly respected regional medical specialists from our nearby

major metropolitan hospitals – Rochester General and Strong Memorial.

Together, with our own professional staff , these experts support many of our

patients on a weekly, monthly and/or case-by-case basis.

From powerful national connections to signifi cant local links, St. James

Mercy is committed to bringing the best of its in-house services together with

the very best outside resources.

Unlike many of today’s hospitals that merely focus on facets of the human

condition, St. James Mercy is committed to the whole person supporting not

only physical medical issues but emotional and spiritual needs, as well. At

St. James Mercy, we are proud to say that we not only live by Catholic Health

East’s mission, but we work by it, too. Simply put, our mission is: “To be a

transforming, healing presence within the rural communities we serve, par-

ticularly addressing the needs of the poor, underserved and disadvantaged.”

Th is mission not only reinforces our powerful connection with a leading

humanitarian health care provider, but on a more personal level, it supports

our passion and perseverance to be well connected to our patients, too.

St. James Mercy is well equipped with a broad spectrum of high

quality, highly dependable technology that supports each and every one of

our departments -- from Intensive Care and Surgical, to Imaging and

Emergency Services.

From state-of-the-art Seimens monitoring systems to Telemetry with Emer-

gency Room viewing capabilities, we are thoroughly prepared to serve and

support a wide array of health care issues, from critical inpatient demands

to common outpatient needs.

Our Endovenous laser treatment (ELVT) sets us apart while our Photo-

vaporization laser (PVP) helps us put it all together by providing greater

surgical precision.

Whether we are treating patients with our new Gyrus cautery technology,

no-stitch cataract surgery or Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS),

we off er a healthy range of responsive, reliable operating room and surgical

procedures.

When it comes to Imaging, we provide patients with a wide angle on proac-

tive, preventative services -- Nuclear Med for cardiac studies, Mammogra-

phy, Ultrasound, Bone Density Testing, Echocardiography, Stress Testing,

Angioplasty, Biopsies and more. Whatever the imaging technology, our

new picture archiving and communication system (PACS) puts the fi nish-

ing frame and focus on all of it by maintaining critical data with ease and

accuracy.

Ease and accuracy are important elements of any technology especially when

it pertains to an Emergency Room. At St. James Mercy we are proud to have

a well equipped ER complete with nine treatment rooms (six monitored), a

trauma room with a portable ventilator, blood warmer and rapid infuser and

two fully equipped critical care rooms. In addition, this unit boasts portable

computer technology and telemetry.

Th rough St. James Mercy Foundation, many equipment and service projects

are funded each year, to help us provide the best possible health care services

for those seeking our care. From rare health issues to routine medical

concerns, St. James Mercy is well equipped to handle them all.

HE A T H E R CO RN I S H, RN in Dialysis

I’d never be where I am now if it hadn’t been for St. James Mercy. St. James has opened a lot of doors…it’s how I found out I want to be a nurse. I needed to be a nurse to take care of the people and take care of the community. You have a close-ness with other people – and in this area, they mean it. If you’re looking for community and a great place to raise children, it’s here. If I can make it so people have less pain or less treatment time, then I guess I’ve made a diff erence. Patients say ‘you’re so good at this’. Th e people here are family – they’re not just people you work with. It’s a good place to be – great health benefi ts – generous PTO – benefi ts in the community because you work here. You can’t get a better work family.

We could go on and on about our great staff and many professional services but we believe our patients and medical practitioners are our best spokespeople. Their experiences at St. James Mercy speak for themselves.

WellSaidPASQUALE PICCO, MD, Pulmonologist

I fi rst came to St. James Mercy because I was looking to practice in a small community where I could provide high quality health care in my chosen specialty. It also allowed me to fi ll a need in the community, which is very rewarding. I enjoy practicing here because patient care and quality is the number one priority that St. James Mercy strives for. Th e people of Hornell have a very strong sense of community. It is a safe and supportive environment in which to raise a fam-ily, and like St. James Mercy, the school system in Hornell also strives for excellence.

K I E R A KU H N, Director of Emergency Services

“What attracted me to St. James was the opportu-nity to join a team that welcomes new ideas, and share my professional connections to strengthen the quality of healthcare to the community. St. James is well connected with many highly respect-ed medical organizations in the region, from the ongoing education of Emergency Medical Services staff to managing multi-victim trauma incidents.”

TERRY FISHER, Director of Nutrition at Mercycare

Th is is the best organization I’ve worked for in my career. Here I feel just like family, part of the team. ‘When Quality Matters’ means to provide the best service we possibly can. It’s all about our core values. We’ve got a quality team here.

COLLEEN HARTMAN, RN in Dialysis

It’s like a big family, very welcoming. Th ere’s great camaraderie between patients and staff . We like each other – it’s teamwork. We have respect for one another and for the patients, and vice versa. I think in terms of quality of care, 99% of our patients would say it’s excellent. We cover all aspects of a patient’s care – and go above and beyond. Th e social workers are so great at fi nding programs to help patients. We treat everything. Th ere’s good chemistry. I wouldn’t go anywhere else. Th is is a nice place to bring up kids.

HOW A RD TY N D A L L, CNA at MercyCare

I wanted to make a positive diff erence. I like to make patients laugh and help them forget why they’re here.

JENNIFER KOEHLER, Social Worker at Mercycare

It’s very rewarding to work with the residents. Every day is diff erent. It’s a great organization – St. James really reaches out and helps people. It’s a great place to raise a family. Th e community really reaches out to help people.

HEIDI MARGESON, Physician Revenue Cycle Specialist

What I enjoy most about working at St. James is helping the patients, especially the elderly. We live by our core values – it’s what we’re here for. Th is is a small community, and people feel comfortable coming here for healthcare.

WellPositionedWith a strong history, outstanding personnel, excellent equipment

and services and compelling connections, it is no wonder that St. James

Mercy is nationally known as a leader in performance improvement.

To underlie this designation and further refl ect its commitment to continu-

ously improving health care outcomes and patient experiences, St. James

Mercy recently adopted the tagline, “When Quality Matters.”

Much more than words, this new positioning statement tells the story of

how one small health care facility continues to lead its peers in developing

and implementing quality initiatives that take health care to the next level.

From creating and executing numerous infection prevention programs to

streamlining and strengthening administrative services such as the Comput-

erized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) and Barcode Medication Verifi ca-

tion (BMV), St. James Mercy is well positioned to compete in a health care

industry where and when quality matters.

Into the

WellIn response to the ever-changing needs of patients, St. James

Mercy is in the midst of embarking on an expansion project that includes a new

75,000 square foot Ambulatory Care Center.

Scheduled to open in 2010, this new facility will accommodate many outpatient

services and some physician offi ces, all geared to improve health care access for many

populations in the service area.

Th e Ambulatory Care Center project is just part of a larger comprehensive strategy

to strengthen the long term viability of St. James Mercy as a regional healthcare

provider of choice.

In addition, St. James Mercy is continuously increasing its service scope in specialties

such as orthopedics, cardiology and neurology to further support the needs of today’s

diverse consumer, improve patient satisfaction and provide added convenience

– well into the future.
