The Magazine for Cowboys and Kids

I hope everyone’s summer has been good. At the Sorensen house, we have been busy all summer and really have not done anything but enjoy grandkids and our acreage project. Sale season is almost ready to start again and I look forward to seeing all of you on the sale circuit.

Do you now how to make a grandpa happy? You have him witness a project like this picture...

The only thing is, I have a gut feeling that gramps is going to be feeding this one till it dies of old age. I also bought one that is to be a stall mate for the one in the picture and grandma has takin’ a liking to it so I’m guessing its a lifer, too. I guess if I can get my grandkids and my wife interested it’s worth every penny!

I have a few questions for you folks this month. First, what do you think of the new look of Livestock Plus? You’ve had a few months to see and handle it, we are just curious if you liked it? Second, we are running a test. Get out your August issue and lay it beside your September issue. Now, let us know which cover you think is more attractive? August is a matte finish and September is a gloss finish. Please reply to [email protected] or give me a call 641-745-7949.

Next on our question list: have you been to our new web site? Please check it out at www.livestockplusinc.com and sign up for our email blast. Look around on the site and let me know what you would like to see that would attract you to come back to the page. We also have a classified page for “For Sale” items. Some folks in the upcoming sale list have also elected to have us link to their site for more and updated info on their sales. We also can provide banner ads. Please let us know what you think.

Believe me people, I haven’t missed a meal this month, but just didn’t

Featherlite:Layout 1 8/11/11 8:43 AM Page 1

get anything that would blow your hat off. So, we’ll get prepared for next month. Please keep a prayer going for service folks and their families that have lost their lives fighting for our freedoms. God Bless and have a good rest of the summer!

COMMENTARY

A Little Bit About a Whole Lot of Things

by Evan Rayl

Rustlers stealing cattle is certainly not new, but in a case near Fort Worth, Texas, the thieves first stole a trailer to haul them away. When Tommy Russell went to a leased pasture to pick up his trailer to go get a horse he had bought at auction, he discovered the gate padlock had been cut and his trailer was gone, along with part of the cattle that were in the pasture. Russell could see where rustlers had set up a temporary pen to catch and load out the cattle. Russell has no idea how many cattle were taken.

CowboyLogic:Onlyafewwilllearnfromotherpeople’smistakes;most of us have to be the other people.

The effects of the terrible winter a couple of years ago, has repeatedly shown up whenever cows were preg checked ever since that winter. It was to be expected with the poor quality hay, cold temperatures, and the cows laying in deep snowbanks in a winter that lasted a full six months.

Now we can expect more of the same from the extreme hot weather we just wentthroughinJuly.Forexample, thestateofOklahomajustsetanalltime record for the highest average 24 hour temperature for the month of July,89.9degrees.Extremehightemperaturesduringthedaywereterrible,but nights when it cooled down very little was even worse. When cows bred this summer are preg tested, expect to find a fair number of opens.

CowboyLogic:Ifyouaimatnothin’,you’llhititeverytime.

Recently the best selection of under 500 pound calves has been coming to market due to the extreme drought and heat. Of course the price is high, but with those calves compensatory gain will help cheapen up the price. At the same time a lot of young cows are coming to market too and many of them are being sold by the pound as well. Likely, they will be the last good chance to buy reasonably priced bred cows for several years to come. Total cow numbers are the lowest in many years, so these young cows will pay for themselves rapidly with strong markets expected in the years to come.

CowboyLogic:Fewwomenadmittheirage.Fewmenacttheirs.

National Beef has recalled 30 tons of ground beef that might be adul-terated with E. coli O157:H7, according to the USDA’s Food Safety and InspectionService(FSIS).ThebeefwasproducedonJuly23rdand25th. Each box of product bears the establishment number “Est. 262” as the USDA mark of inspection. The problem was discovered as a result of routine microbial test conducted by the Ohio Department of Agriculture at a state-inspected facility that had purchased these products for further processing. A traceback investigation revealed that the slaughter facility, NationalBeefPackingCo.wasthesolesourceforthepositiveproductsample. FSIS and the company have received no reports of illnesses associ-atedwithconsumptionoftheseproducts.Justareminder:Alwayscookhamburger to at least 160 degrees internal temperature, which will kill the E. coli.

CowboyLogic:Everymanhasthefreedomtoseekhisownlevel.

SecretaryofAgricultureTomVillsackrecentlysaidthatFoodStampsare a stimulus for the economy. I disagree. Food stamps are a welfare pro-gram that gets charged to the farm program because it helps the poor to buy food. In fact, food stamps are not the only welfare program that is charged to the farm program. A high percentage of spending in the ag department goes for welfare. With the current direction of this country, it appears most everything in the farm program that is agricultural will be removed and all that will be left will be welfare programs. I hope they then change the name of the department.

CowboyLogic:Youcaneducateafool,butyoucan’tmakehimthink.

Shirley and I live in what will soon be a valley, a valley between those 250 foot tall wind turbines. There are 76 of them starting six miles to the north of us and there will soon be 193 more of them starting two miles south of our farm. For the past few years we have had the ones north of us with red lights flashing throughout the night. As soon as the ones south of us are finished, I expect we’ll have a lot more flashing red lights to the south of us. Please understand, I’m not against these wind turbines. In fact, I’m all for them. Anything that keeps us from buying foreign oil, I’m for it. I’d like to see more wind turbines, more coal and natural gas used, plus more drilling for oil. n

National events. I think that many of you will agree that, as we mention at our clinics,

you need to look at the big picture. Ultimately, the bottom line is that we are teaching our young people marketing skills, and any avenue in life they take, theywill needtheseskills.Whetheritisinthefittingclasswheretheyareon a team of three and have to learn to work together, and most likely they have not worked together before, or if they are all alone presenting a speech for the public speaking class, they are learning what it takes to work their hardest and how to change things, to do better next year.

All of the contests are geared to give your young person the oppor-tunity to market themselves, their skills and knowledge, or their product thattheyown, andhaveworkedon.IrecallthestatementthatCodymadethis year as we got under way in the contests. He said, “This year, I think I finallyget whatyouhavebeentellingmealltheseyears.”

He had not been looking forward to doing the salesmanship contest. I pointed out to him that he really had been involved in selling his animal each and every time he went to a show, from the moment he stepped her off the trailer until he loaded her back up again and headed for home. Also, when we were selling calves in the fall, he happened to be the only one home. When people would stop by to view the calves, he was marketing to them. So this opportunity was not a whole lot different than what he had already been doing, the only thing was he was going to be judged, and that he needed to put a little deeper thought into the presentation of the material.

I think that through this contest, they see what the importance is on researching the pedigree of their animal, and knowing what kind of cow and bull they are out of. Then also being a part of deciding what bull to breed the heifer to and discussing the different predictable traits, that you would like to see come forth in the offspring.

A lot of work is put into making these events memorable for our young people. We would like to thank everyone who makes these Nationals possible, as well as all of the companies that donate towards the prizes for these events. It is the insights of these great people and companies that see the value of supporting programs like these, that will keep our children learning valuable skills. Skills that will eventually help the whole world. Also, remember to thank your parents and a lot of grandparents for making thesacrificeandgivingyoutheopportunitytotakepartintheseevents.Welook forward to next year!

Thank you,McCulloughFittingClinicsChuck&Karen,Erin,Cody,Madison,&DrewDoing our Best, letting GOD do the Rest! If you have any questions feel free to call,ChuckMcCullough641-344-5566KarenMcCullough641-344-5548

Huge Opportunity!Jr. National Shows

Banners fade, trophies collect dust, and money sifts through your hands like sand, but the friends you have made and the people you have met will stick with you for life. Looking back on a busy year full of clinics and shows, we can’t help but think about how wonderful it is that our children get to grow up surrounded by the great people that share the love of agriculture and showing cattle, like we do.

We would like to encourage everyone to consider buying a papered ani-malforyournextproject.WefeelthattheJr.NationalShows,ifyouchooseto take part, could be one of the best opportunities a young person could get to participate in. The skills that one can gain from these great events will prepare them for a future of so many possibilities. Of coarse, we ourselves, with as many clinics as we do, do not have time to get involved in all of the breed nationals. This year, however, we were able to take part in the Maine, Chi,andCharolaisevents in Kansas City, thentheSimmentals in Sedelia, MO. Not to take anything away from the other breeds, but these are the ones that we are more familiar with. Thus, we wanted to share with everyone some of thegreatadvantagestoshowing, andbeingapartofthesebreeds, andtheJr.

WEALAND RANCH at Cedar Point, KS

is proud to announce

For Sale This FallA select group of Chimaine and

low % Maine Anjou cows and heifers.Bred to several top sires such as:

CalvingeaseAngussire“Answer”Chimainesires:“Bodacious”and“ReeHeights”

All are available in mid October. We will, however, sell them before that and keep them until October. Hot Flash is a grandson of Heat Seeker, Blues Brother is a blue roan Tank Son. The two older cows wouldn’t have been around as long as they have been if they weren’t producing!

We have been in the business of raising quality show calves since the early sixties with Angus cattle, later in the 70’s with Chiangus cattle, and the 80’s saw an infusion of Shorthorns and Maine Anjou developing into what we are offerting today.

We are extremely proud of these cows and we will be happy to show them to you!

contemporary groups, EPD’s, or anything else. Finally, if you have any donor(s) picked out, hopefully they’re

open and on a good mineral program. If you have yet to wean the calf off your donor you need to decide whether to do that before or after theflush.Undernormalcircumstances, itusuallyhelpstogetthecalfweaned so it quits dragging her down. It’s amazing how much weight a young working cow can put on in just a couple weeks without a calf. Either way she will need a little supplement two to three weeks before theflushingprotocolstarts.Thegrassmaystillbetherebutitsnutri-tional value this time of year is usually suspect. You should also think aboutthetimingoftheflush(s).Wedon’tnormallyliketoflushcowsanywhere close to the hot weather, but if you want to squeeze as many flushesoutofyourcowbeforeyoubreedherback,ithelpstohaveaplan.Acommonexamplecouldbeadonorthatyouwanttoflushonceandfreezeembryosbeforeyoudoafreshflushforfallcalves(Iliketohave60to70daysrestbetweenflushes).Ifyoualsowanttogetthatdonor bred back for a fall calf herself, the math could get even more complicated.

Hopefully I gave you some things to think about. It’s a changing world out there and agriculture is no exception. With this, one thing is for certain, as our margins continue to tighten in the cattle industry, we willbeforcedtobecomemoreefficientsolookaheadandseewhatyoucan do to make your cattle operation more productive.- Toby n

Some Fall Activities to Think AboutBy Toby Muller

FallisdefinitelymyfavoritetimeofyearbutIamalittleconcernedat how fast this summer went. Oh well, on with the cool nights and warm days and away with the hot-humid nights and the hotter and more humid days. One of the other reasons why I think I like the fall so much is that we’re doing a lot of different things this time of year. Not only does the weather transition so does our day to day activities. Here is a few things you might want to think about before you jump into the combine and put the cows on the back burner.

Right now is the peak time in the Midwest to ultrasound cows. A lot of our spring cows were bred around 100 days ago which makes it an ideal time to have them fetal aged. Accuracy is very high and typically cull cow prices are still very good through early fall. If you typically precondition your calves, ultrasound your cows when you already have them sorted from the calves. Line up your veterinarian to precondition in the am and ultrasound the cows in the pm or vice versa. It will save time and stress on both you and the animals.

Although we don’t typically do a lot of fall carcass ultrasound, now is the time if you need that information. Acceptable scanning age windows vary by breed, but 320 to 440 days is a good guideline to remember. If you have any questions contact your breed association or scanning technician for more information about that or barn sheets,

For 63 Years,

RAYL ANGUS FARMS has been raising cattle to meet two simple goals:

Easy Calvingand

Rapid Growth.

Then 25 years agoGood Carcasses

became an additional goaland now in the past 12 months

Feed Efficiencybecame yet another goal.

To see how good our cattle are, we sent 35 bullstotheHaysBeefDevelopmentCenter

at Diagonal, Iowa. There, our bulls could be weighed to determinetheir gain, as well as exactly how

much feed each bull ate.

Here are the results,Rayl Angus Bulls needed 4.255 pounds of feed

to put on a pound of gain.

Last year several breeders went together to test42 bulls of several breeds on exactly the same ration

in the same barn using the same equipment. These bulls required 4.684 pounds of feed to gain one pound.

That’s an additional 10 percent feed needed to put on gain by last year’s group

Another crop of the same HIGH QUALITY BULLS will be FOR SALE this coming winter.

Well, I’m not sure how you all feel but I am not ready to give up my summer!! A few people have asked Tuck if he is excited for school to start because he will be in kin-dergarten this year. His response has been, “Not really, but Mom is really excited.”

I have to say thank you to Matt Lautner forallowingustoparticipateinhisCustomerAppreciation Golf Tournament. My sister,

Mandi, and I represented Livestock Plus at Hole #15 and had a lot of fun! Well, other than Mandi yelling at me for letting the adult beverage spill over the pitcher a couple times, but in my defense, I was deep in conversa-tion. Thanks again, Matt!

You have to picture this little acreage that Mom and Dad recently acquired. It is a little bit of a train wreck. So, the other day Dad texted all of us, “Fencing party! Who’s in?”

Is it really sad that I was excited by the prospect of spending the evening with my family taking out fence? My sister, Mandi, decided that she would try to direct our activi-

ties while watching the kids. In other words she appointed herself to be bossy! The rest of us tore down fence and moved a lot of things around. My brother, Bubba, and brother-in-law, Brian, and I discussed our upcom-ing fantasy football draft while poking a little fun at each other. The only person missing was my sister-in-law, Maria, and that is because she is very pregnant. Mom and Dad were all over the place, but enjoying it all. It is the most soothing and therapeutic feeling to know that there is a group of people, crazy as they may be, that will be there through the wonderful highs of life and be there to pick you up when things get bad. “Enjoy the

I hope you all take a moment to respond to all of the questions Dad posed in his article. We all have our opinions but it is always good to hear fromourreaders!Pleasedon’tforgettosendyourCUTEFARMKIDpictures for our feature photo spot. Email them to me at [email protected]

As always, please keep our military men and women in your prayers. Stay safe in your travels!
