If this is not the case, if the first principle of Jewish belief is not human worth and dignity, then why should we worry about how we care for ourselves and treat others? And these are the things we worry about most. Is there anyone of us who doesn’t carry some concern over our health, or some concern about our children, grandchildren, or parents? Is there anyone of us who hasn’t felt disrespected or been insulted? Who do we admire for the goodness of their character and the merit of their deeds? Who do we mock for being callous or acting in an embarrassing way? Human behavior is inconsequential if people aren’t important. That is why our tradition asserts that we are created b’Tzelem Elohim, in God’s image. This religious belief still defines us. Living in God’s image endows our lives with significance and purpose. Reflecting in prayer, we wonder: How could life in this grand and glorious world be worthy of its beauty and its mystery if who we are is of little consequence? With this awareness, we come into God’s presence. Who we are matters. What we do matters. How we do it matters, too. “Like” Us on Facebook! You Could Be a Winner! Join our Facebook community. Chizuk Amuno has a long history of proud service to Baltimore’s Jewish community. Dedicated to strengthening faith in our people’s covenant with God, the purpose of Chizuk Amuno Congregation is to create a sacred Jewish community. Here individuals and families can find meaning for their lives from serious engagement with the texts, wisdom, and celebrations of Judaism. In pursuit of this mission, Chizuk Amuno ascribes to the rabbinic teaching: “The world is sustained through Torah – learning, Avodah – prayer and service, and Gemilut Hasadim – acts of loving kindness.”
