MESSagE FROM THE adviSORY BOaRd CHaiR Many of the programs at the Seniors’ Activity Centre have a special place for each of us—whether it be the Keeping connected programs, the education programs, the physical fitness programs or the social programs where you just get together with your friends for a meal or a cup of coffee. Most of the programs are paid for by fees and grants. 100% of the funds raised go towards these programs. The District of West

Vancouver is very generous and provides 18% of our budget. The rest of the budget depends on the generosity of our community and that is what I would like to talk to you about. We are in the midst of a campaign where we hope to raise $200,000 over a three-year period. This is an opportunity for you to consider donating to the Centre and ensure that the wonderful programming will continue. Consider a gift to the Keeping Connected program. Remember that if you designate your donation to a specific program it will go to that program.Something else you might consider is a Planned Gift. That is where you put in your Will, a designated amount that will be given to the Seniors’ Centre upon your death. Sheilah Grant Chair

SENIORS' SCENE September / October 2015

MESSagE FROM THE COMMuniTY RECREaTiOn ManagER We are very privileged to live in such a wonderful community. We have a scenic landscape, incredible people and a community that cares. Over the past 20 years we have been offering Keeping Connected programs that provide exercise, art, conversation, education, excursions, and a chance to socially connect.

These programs are specific for those who have suffered a loss, whether that is physical, cognitive, loss of a loved one, or loss of independence. Keeping Connected programs have nearly doubled in the past year growing from 500 participants to just under 900! These programs ensure all of members continue to live and enjoy the high quality of life we have here on the North Shore. These programs cost anywhere from $10–$36 per person per class, yet we have been able to keep the fees between $4.25–$12, because of the generous support of our members. September is the start of our second annual Building Connections Giving Campaign led by Frank Kurucz, Chair of Friends of the Centre. All funds raised go to Keeping Connected programs and the Shuttle Bus to ensure our elders have the opportunity to participate in their programs with the support they need in place. Please support our Building Connections Campaign this fall with a donation! Jill Lawlor Community Recreation Manager

our TalenTed WoodWorKing superVisorsHave you seen the new bookcase? Did you know that our fabulous woodworkers—Frank Smith and Derrick Leeson created these for the Centre? Many of our talented woodwork supervisors have also been making salad forks, stools, helping seniors with some of the things that need a bit of fixing and so much more. You can see their handy work all around the Centre.

green WasTe Bins recently the number of locations and bins to divert food waste from going into the garbage at the Seniors' activity Centre was expanded. This is an improvement as the regional ban on organics came into effect on July 1, 2015. In fact, our kitchen staff have been diverting all sorts of food waste since 2013 and are responsible for a large portion of the of 6 tonnes/year that is diverted from the garbage at the Civic Site. Why does it matter? Garbage is often trucked long distances to landfills, for vegetable waste—which is mostly made up of water—that is a costly waste of fuel. Once food waste is buried it converts to methane, a gas that contributes to climate change. When food waste is diverted from the landfill at the SAC or your home it is transported to Richmond where it either goes through a process that actually generates power or is made into compost. Also the cost to dispose of garbage compared to organics so there will be cost savings in the long run. Kudos to the kitchen and maintenance staff as well as the Coffee Bar & Dining room volunteers who help make sure food waste is not going into the garbage.
