Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium CWG opening ceremony

The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium was constructed by the Government of India to host the 9th Asian Games in1982, following which it hosted the 1989 Asian Championships in Athletics and the 2010 CommonwealthGames. In preparation for the 2010 Commonwealth Games, the stadium reduced its capacity from 78,000 to60,000 spectators.

The 16-km Central Secret ariat-Sarita Vihar corridor opened to the general public at 8 am, just a few hours before the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games. As many as 29 standard gauge Metro trainsrun on the line.

Train services on the line run on a very high frequency of 2 minutes and 40 seconds to cater to the passenger rush expected for the opening ceremony. Train movement on this line personally monitored by senior Metroofficers from the Operations’ Control Room, and engineers from Germany and South Korea present toensure that no technical glitches occur.

The line is part of the Central Secretariat-Badarpur corridor, whose deadline was September 30. But, theDMRC decided to throw it open till Sarita Vihar only as some signalling work is pending on the smallstretch from Sarita Vihar to Badarpur.

With this, the Delhi Metro’s ambitious Phase-II has almost been completed except the Airport Express Line, which could not get the safety clearance.

“It is a matter of great pride and glory for all of us in Delhi Metro that the Badarpur line has beensubstantially opened up to Sarita Vihar. This marks almost the completion of our Phase-II project,” an elatedSreedharan told reporters at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

He recalled that the line was sanctioned only in 2007 and it has been completed within just 3 years and 4months.

Since the line connects the JLN Stadium, Delhi Metro will runs 29 trains on it till the end of the Games at anall-time high frequency 2.40 minutes.

DMRC spokesperson Anuj Dayal said that Sreedharan himself will monitor train movement on the linetoday from the Operation Control Centre at Metro Bhawan.

“Since it is the opening ceremony, he will be there at the OCC the whole day and monitor the train

movement. Senior officials and experts from South Korea and Germany have also been stationed at various places to ensure no technical glitch takes place today,” he said.

This is the second Standard Gauge line to come up in the country after the Delhi Metro’s Inderlok-Mundkacorridor.

Work on the line was delayed after an under-construction pillar collapsed in Zamrudpur in south Delhi lastJuly killing seven people.

Immediately after the line opened, a number of people, especially Games volunteers, took the Metro to

reach the Games venue.

The JLN Stadium station wore a festive look and Sreedharan visited it along with his wife and senior DMRC officials.

• Dhyan Chand National Stadium - Hockey

Dhyan Chand National Stadium is a field hockey stadium at New Delhi, India. It originally held 25,000 people. It is named after former Indian field hockey player, Dhyan Chand. It served as the venue for the 1stAsian Games in 1951.

Sports Minister M.S.Gill Sunday opened the revamped Major Dhyan Chand National stadium, the first

Commonwealth Games venue to be finished, and said other venues for the October mega event will becompleted on time. The remodelled stadium, which is scheduled to host the hockey World Cup Feb 28-March 13, is the firstamong the Commonwealth Games venues to be opened.

The stadium, revamped at a cost of Rs.262 crore, is spread over 36 acres, has three synthetic pitches, twoconforming to international standards and the third a practice pitch. New polygrass turf has been laid on allthe pitches which are equipped with new sprinkler systems.

The stadium has a sitting capacity of about 16,200 spectators. The second pitch outside the main arena has900 permanent seats and a provision for 1,600 temporary seats.

“The facilities in the stadium are state-of-the-art. So much work has been done in the stadium that you can

say it is almost new. It is one of the best hockey stadiums in the world,” Gill said. The stadium was originally built in 1933 as an amphitheatre. It was renovated for first Asian Games held in1951 and then for the 1982 Asian Games.

“The stadium has a rich legacy. It is synonymous with Indian hockey. It brings back memories of mychildhood when I came here with my father from Meerut during the first Asian Games to see India play inthe football finals. I remember Mewalal scoring a bicycle kick goal. Today, I recall those nostalgicmoments,” Gill said.

Page 16: Live View of the World Now

Gill said the stadium could be completed on time because of the hard work of the engineers and the 2000workers.

“When I first visited the stadium last year, it was in a mess with construction work going on and I wonderedwhether it could be completed on time. But the CPWD engineers, Sports Authority of India officials gaveme assurance that it will be done on time.”

“It could be possible because of them and more importantly the 2000 people, who come from all over the counrty, and have worked day andnight in this cold, to complete the work in one year,” Gill said amid loud applause from the guests and theworkers.

“We got the hosting rights of the Commonwealth Games in 2003. I do not know what happened in five

years, but since I came in 2008, I have visited the sites regularly. I have sat with the officials and made surethat the work is completed.”

“I can assure you that with the opening of this stadium, we have made a beginning and now you will see thevenues will be completed one after another. Yes, we could have finished the work one year in advance, likethey are doing in London, to get the facilities tested, but at least we can ensure that the venues will come upwell before the Commonwealth Games.”

Gill used the opportunity to take a dig at the national sports federations.

“If you don’t deserve to be there, then you should voluntarily and happily step aside,” Gill said while talkingabout the Weightlifting Federation of India (WFI) that has been newly elected following the doping mess.

Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium of Delhi is situated in theIndraprastha Estate in the eastern part of the city. Built in the year 1982 to host the indoor sports events of the Asiad Games, it is spread over an area of 102 acres. From the time Delhi Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadiumwas constructed, it has undergone numerous renovations and restorations. The stadium has been divided twoequal halves by a soundproof and fireproof synthetics wall.

The facilities at the Indra Gandhi Indoor Stadium of New Delhi include a fully air-conditioned main indoor arena with a seating capacity of 25,000 persons. Also, the stadium is well equipped with intricate audio andlighting systems, making it adequate for colored television transmission. One of the most recent feats of thestadium is that it has been selected to host the Netball Competitions of Commonwealth Games 2010.

Expressing his delight at the immaculate execution of restructuring the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium, theUnion Sports Minister, Dr. M. S. Gill, goaded the contractors to pay the labourers heartily even as hecommended the Public Works Departments of both the State and the Centre for a world class job.

Inaugurating the best indoor arena in the country with 14,500 seats that was originally constructed for the 1982 Asian Games, Dr. Gillsaid on Saturday that the labourers, who had come from Bihar, Orissa, Bengal, Rajasthan, etc., should be paid 10 paise more, and not one paisa less.

“Don’t save money from labourers. Give them good food”, said the sports minister.

Though the stadium would host gymnastics during the Commonwealth Games, the minister warned that the

Page 18: Live View of the World Now

stadium would be in much demand from various quarters.

“SAI owns the stadium, and it will have a tough time saying no to many”, he said.

The Chief Minister of Delhi, Sheila Dikshit, said that she did not feel like leaving the “beautiful” arena because of its excellent ambience.

“The workers have done us proud. We have stadiums one better than the other. We have lived up to our  promise. We feel very assured that everything would be ready in time”, said the chief minister.

Dream come trueThe Chairman of the Organising Committee of the Games, and the president of the Indian OlympicAssociation (IOA), Suresh Kalmadi had no hesitation in saying that it was a dream come true to be witnessto one venue after the other, that meet exacting global standards, and to hear praise from the internationalfraternity during the test events.

“The last test event will be complete by July, and athletics will be the last”, said Kalmadi.

The stadium has been rebuilt at a cost of Rs.240 crore. The entire stretch of 22000 square metres of the roof has been replaced with galvanised aluminium puncture-less sheeting system with improved thermalinsulation and acoustics.

Page 19: Live View of the World Now

The lighting has been done at2200 lux to meet the requirements of High Density television coverage. The lighting can also be switched to300 lux and 750 lux, depending on the requirements. The roof also has polycarbonate sheets to allow naturallight.

Water harvesting has been planned by recharging the adjacent lake. The 56 toilet blocks have beenrenovated and fitted with sensors for urinals.

There are also two new warm-up halls connected to the main stadium. There are five new ramps around thestadium to facilitate barrier free access.

Talking about the challenges ahead, the sports minister said that precise planning was required to maketravel and other related arrangements for about 15,000 competitors and officials from around the world, as

the host has promised a complete package.“We are also focused on providing a grand spectacle during the opening ceremony on October 3”, Dr. Gillsaid.

(Devanāgarī:ि दली  ि विशवाय, DU) is a central university situated in Delhi, India and is funded by Government of India. Established in 1922, it offers courses at the undergraduate and post-graduatelevel. Vice-President of India Mohammad Hamid Ansariis the Chancellor of the university. It has beenranked as the top non IIT university in India by the THES – QS world universities ranking.[2] The universityhas two campuses, namely north campus and south campus in the northern and southern part of the city

respectively. The north campus is well connected with the yellow line of the Delhi Metro. The station iscalled Vishwavidyalaya, which means “university” in Hindiand Sanskrit. North campus is about 2.5 kmfrom Delhi Vidhan Sabha and 7.0 km from ISBT.

HistoryThe University of Delhi was established in 1922 as a unitary, teaching and residential university by an Actof the Central Legislative Assembly. The first convocation of Delhi University was also held in theAssembly Hall in Old Secretariat Building which now houses the Legislative Assembly of Delhi, on 26March 1923 with 750 invitees. Honorary Degrees were conferred on Lord Reading (Viceroy of India), Sir Md. Jahan and Sir Hari Singh Gaur, the first Vice Chancellor of the University ]. Only three colleges existedthen in Delhi: St. Stephens College founded in 1881, Hindu College founded in 1899 and Ramjas College

founded in 1917, which were affiliated to the University. The University thus had a modest beginning with just three colleges, two faculties (Arts and Science) and about 750 students. The first college to move to thecampus was St Stephen’s in 1942, followed by Hindu, Ramjas and Commerce (now known as Shri RamCollege of Commerce). There was Zakir Husain College also, The origin of the Zakir Husain College can betraced to the closing years of the 17th Century.

In October 1933, the University offices and the Library shifted to the Viceregal Lodge Estate, which had been the residence of the Viceroy andGovernor-General of India, Rufus Isaacs and later Lord
