We believe that buying, building and living orworking in one of our log structures can be themost rewarding investment you’ll make in life.

The story of Appalachian Log Structures beginsmore than 30 years ago, when our founder,Fletcher R. Parsons, put his 40-some years ofexperience in heavy-timber manufacturing andwood preservation into a log home company.

Today, that company is still providing what heenvisioned – durable, high quality logstructures for residential and commercial use.But that’s just the beginning.

The Excitementis Building.

We’re not one of those log homemanufacturers who will sell you a kit andwish you the best of luck. We form apartnership with you and work with you –from the way you see your home, to the wayit lays out in the blueprint, to the way it willbe erected at your site.

And while we don’t assemble the log homeon your lot, we can help you locate a builder, and we provide a technical assistance visitduring assembly.

Planning your Log Home

The most important step in building alog home is planning. It is also the mosttime-consuming – but it is the first stepto making your best move yet!

Page 5: Live the Log Home Life- 16 pg mkting book

Pre-QualifyContact a lending institution to check on currentinterest rates, mortgage loan options, and securepre-approval for a loan. This will help you developa realistic budget for your home. We can provideyou with a list of “log friendly“ lenders.

Choose a Floor PlanWork with one of our sales consultants to createthe floor plan you want – choose one of ourpredesigned plans, or develop a custom plan. Wewill work with you to create the floor plan thatmeets your budget and your expectations. We willdevelop a quotation for the log package materialsneeded, and work with you to choose a logthickness (8” or 6”), log profile, and corner style.

A note about square footage: The total squarefootage description for each model is calculatedbased on total floor area for the first and secondfloors. This is not the same as total living area, which can be calculated several different ways.

Order BlueprintsFinalize your floor plan and place an order with anAppalachian Log Structures sales consultant forpreliminary blueprints. A preliminary set includesfour (4) elevations, a floor plan design and afoundation plan. Preliminary blueprints are not forconstruction use. A full set of blueprints isavailable after a deposit is placed on the package.

Develop Construction CostsALSI does not provide contracting or building services,so you will need to select a general contractor for yourproject. Contact your local Home Builders Association, other log home-owners, or your local building supplystore to develop a list of potential contractors. We canhelp you find a contractor as well.

Talk with several builders and have them review yourblueprints. Be sure you discuss:

· Building permits· Site preparation· Erection of the log package· Mechanicals (electrical work, plumbing,

heating/ cooling)· Interior finishes (including kitchen, bath,

lighting fixtures, floor coverings, fireplacesand trim packages)

· Landscaping

If you will be your own general contractor, these samesteps should be taken to develop costs and a workabletimetable.

Choose a Builder& Develop a TimelineWhen it comes to something as important as yourhome, don’t select a builder based solely on price. Besure all aspects of the building process have beencovered, and that you feel comfortable with thecommunication level you have with the builder.Carefully check references. You’ll be working togetherto build something special, so make sure you have (orcan establish) a good working relationship.

Every log home is built on a different timeline, basedon its size, design, job site and more. Be sure that youhave a realistic timeline for your construction.

Workthe Plan.

A Word about Building CodesAppalachian Log Structures’ log and beam components are structurally designed to meet or exceed most of theminimum building code requirements. Your contractor, local building official, and local home inspector shouldreview and inform you of any unique conditions or alterations that are required to meet structural coderequirements or construction methods adopted by your community.

GaragesMany of our standard plans show anattached garage. If your floor plan doesnot, we will be glad to work with you todesign a garage (attached or detached)to meet your needs.

FireplacesWe do not supply materials forfireplaces, however, because of theirpopularity in log homes, many of ourstandard floor plans show suggestedlocations. You will need to work withyour contractor to determine location, type and materials if you choose to havea fireplace.

Dormers & GablesDormers and gables are designed toprovide additional functional livingspace, areas for windows and ventilationon the second level of a floor plandesign with a steep roof pitch.

Choose from three designs:

· Gable · Doghouse· Shed

A gable is a triangular wall beneath thepeak of the roof, commonly shown withstationery glass to enhance lighting.

Either can be added to any of ourdesigns to add a special, personal touchto your home.

The ALSIDifference.

We not only extensively precut the components of your log wall system, but also precut window and door jambs, loft joists and rafters. Your salesrepresentative can provide you with a complete list of precut items.
