About Live Mesh

Live Mesh puts you at the center of your digital world, seamlessly connecting you to the people, devices, and information you care about—available wherever you happen to be.

* Have your devices work together. Add a device to your mesh by installing the Live Mesh software on your PC or your Mac so you can easily synchronize the information you need, making the most up-to-date versions of your files available on any of your devices.

* Access your information anywhere. Any information you put in your mesh is available from any of the devices in your mesh, including your Live Desktop. You can store up to 5 GB of files and folders on your Live Desktop, then access and share them from most web browsers.

* Add and share folders. You're here. Your colleague is there. But Live Mesh makes it almost as easy as if you were collaborating in the same office. Folders in your mesh are available from your Live Desktop and can be synchronized with all of your devices. Share folders with family and friends, or keep them private.

* Stay informed. With Live Mesh news, you can get quick access to the latest updates across your mesh. In shared folders, post and read messages and see who's changed what, and when.

About Live Mesh folders

In many ways, a Live Mesh folder is just like any other folder: It can store photos, documents, and other files. But unlike other folders, a Live Mesh folder can also be synchronized automatically with other devices in your mesh, accessed from any computer or mobile phone connected to the Internet, and easily shared with others.

With a few exceptions, any folder on your device can become a Live Mesh folder. Add a folder to your mesh, and the folder icon will turn blue Live Mesh folder icon - synchronized, indicating that the folder and its contents have been added and are being synchronized.

Whenever you open a Live Mesh folder, you'll see the Live Mesh bar along the right side of the folder window. The mesh bar gives you a view of what's happening with this folder across your mesh. Learn more about the Live Mesh bar.

To see all of your Live Mesh folders:

* Click link to go to your Live Desktop Go to your Live Desktop.

–or–

* Open the notifier (Appears when you click the Live Mesh icon in the notification area of your Windows taskbar and gives you quick access to the folders, computers, and news in your mesh.) then click the Folders icon Folders, and then click Manage folders.

Sign in to Live Mesh automatically

You can have Live Mesh sign you in automatically either whenever you open the program or whenever you log on to Windows, giving you immediate access to your shared folders. However, we recommend this option only if you're using a private computer. If you use a public or shared computer, others can access your account if you select Remember my password.

To set up Live Mesh to sign you in automatically:

1. In the Live Mesh sign-in window, enter your Windows Live ID (The user name and password you use to sign in to any Windows Live, MSN, or Office Live sites and services. If you have a Passport Network, Hotmail, or Windows Live Messenger account, you can use it as your Windows Live ID.) .

2. Select the Sign me in automatically check box. The Remember me and Remember my password check boxes will be selected automatically. Your selections will take effect the next time you start Windows.

Work offline

You can continue to work with and edit files in Live Mesh folders on your computer, even when you're not connected to the Internet. Any changes you make to a synchronized

folder will automatically update across your mesh the next time you connect to the Internet.

However, when you're offline, you won't be able to:

* Create a new Live Mesh folder

* Synchronize a folder

* Change synchronization settings for a folder

* Share a folder with someone

* Add to or edit the list of members of a folder

* See which members are currently in a folder

* Use Live Mesh Remote Desktop to connect to your other computers

You can maximize your Live Mesh experience—with access to all features and services—by remaining online and signed in whenever possible.

Note

3. In the New Folder dialog box, type a name for the new folder, then click Browse to choose where on your computer you'd like to store the folder. (The default location is your desktop.)

On your Live DesktopIf you haven't yet added your computer to your mesh (or don't want to), you can use this method to create a folder on just your Live Desktop.

1. Click link to go to your Live Desktop Go to your Live Desktop, then double-click Create new folder.

2. In the New Folder dialog box, type a name for the new folder, then click OK.

Notes

* To use Live Mesh, you need a Windows Live ID (The user name and password you use to sign in to any Windows Live, MSN, or Office Live sites and services. If you have a Passport Network, Hotmail, or Windows Live Messenger account, you can use it as your Windows Live ID.) .

* Folders will appear in the notifier on your Mac with a faded icon Live Mesh folder - unsynchronized until you synchronize them with your Mac. To synchronize the folder with your Mac, click the folder's icon in the notifier. Learn more about synchronizing a folder with devices in your mesh.

* You can add subfolders to Live Mesh folders just as you would with any other folder. However, keep in mind that a subfolder will be synchronized and shared using the same settings as the folder you've added it to.

Add a file

Make your photos, documents, and other files available from any computer in your mesh. You can also share them with friends, family, and co-workers—all by adding the files you want to synchronize and share to a Live Mesh folder. Here's how to add files:

On your computerOnce you've added a computer to Live Mesh, you can create Live Mesh folders and add files to them from anywhere on your computer. You can:

* Save a new file directly to a Live Mesh folder.

–or–

* Copy and paste or drag and drop files into a Live Mesh folder on your computer.

On your Live Desktop 1. Click link to go to your web desktop Go to your Live Desktop.

2. Open a folder, then click Upload file.

3. In the Choose file dialog box, select the file you want to add, then click Open.

Remove a device from your mesh

Page 14: Live MESH - Yves Cornil - bienvenueyves.cornil.free.fr/mesh/Live Mesh.docx  · Web viewLive MESH. Live Mesh beta edition – ... MSN, or Office Live sites ... For example, after

To remove a device 1. Click link to go to your Devices page Go to your Devices page, then click the device you want to remove.

2. Click the Options menu next to the device's name, then click Remove device from Live Mesh. You can then uninstall the Live Mesh software if you like.

What happens to my folders if I remove a device?None of the folders in your mesh will be deleted when you remove a device. Folders will remain on your device, and you'll continue to have full access to the files in those folders. And you can always access and work with folders in your mesh from your Live Desktop (The online location in which your Live Mesh folders are stored, so you can access them from the web.) . However, once you remove your device from your mesh, you'll no longer be able to:

* Synchronize folders with that device

* Use that device to share and synchronize changes with other members

About storage limits

Live Mesh offers 5 gigabytes (GB) of free storage for files on your Live Desktop (The online location in which your Live Mesh folders are stored, so you can access them from the web.) . That's equivalent to about 2,000 high-resolution photographs. Your storage use is based on the size of all the files stored on or synchronized with your Live Desktop, including files added to your folders by other members. You can see how much space you're using and your storage limit from either your Click link to go to your Live Desktop Live Desktop or your Click link to go to your Devices page Devices page.

If you approach your storage limit, you'll see a message on your Live Desktop. If you go over your limit, Live Mesh will stop synchronizing files with your Live Desktop until you clear out some space. You'll see placeholder files (file names will appear in italics, with a .wlx file extension) on your Live Desktop and in your folders for any files you attempt to add after reaching your limit.

How will I know if I've exceeded my Live Desktop storage limit?

* If you're in the process of adding files or synchronizing a folder on your Live Desktop, you'll see a message.

* Your storage limit will show 100% the next time you sign in to Live Mesh.

How do I synchronize a folder between computers in my mesh but not with my Live Desktop? 1. From the Live Desktop, open the folder.

2. In the mesh bar (Appears when you open a Live Mesh folder, allowing you to invite and remove members, read and post news items, and change synchronization settings.) , click Synchronized Devices, then click Manage.

3. In the Change Synchronization dialog box, select Live Desktop, then click Never with this device.

4. Click OK.

Notes

* If you stop synchronizing a folder with your Live Desktop, that folder will continue to synchronize with other Windows computers in your mesh, according to your synchronization settings, but files in the folder will no longer synchronize with any Mac computers your mesh.

* Live Mesh folders will continue to synchronize among Windows computers in your mesh even if you exceed your storage limit for your Live Desktop. However, any files you add to those folders after reaching your storage limit will not synchronize with your Live Desktop or with any Mac computers in your mesh until you clear out some space on your Live Desktop.

* Files in shared folders on the Live Desktop count only toward the folder creator's storage limit.

Are there types of files or folders that I cannot share or synchronize?

You cannot synchronize or share the following with Live Mesh:

* Files containing obscene or copyrighted material. Copying or sharing unauthorized materials, including materials that you did not create or you do not have the rights necessary for use, is a violation of the Windows Live terms of use. See the Microsoft Copyright Notice and FAQ.

* Files whose names begin with a tilde (~)

* desktop.ini

* thumbs.db

* Hidden files

Delete your Live Mesh account

You can delete your Live Mesh account at any time. When you delete your account, all Live Mesh folders that you've synchronized with your devices and shared with other people will remain on your and their computers. However, you'll no longer be able to:

* Access your Live Desktop (The online location in which your Live Mesh folders are stored, so you can access them from the web.)

* Keep folders synchronized with other devices

* Share and synchronize changes to files with other members

* Delete files from members' devices

* Use Live Mesh Remote Desktop to connect to your other computers

If you decide to sign up for Live Mesh again in the future, you'll need to add each of your devices, then add and synchronize folders to Live Mesh as you did when you first signed up. If you were sharing Live Mesh folders with others, you'll need to add them again to your folders or ask them to add you again to their folders.

To delete your Live Mesh account 1. Click link to go to your Devices page Go to your Devices page, click your name at the upper right-hand corner, then click Delete account.

2. On the Delete this Live Mesh account? page, click Delete Account.

Once you've deleted your account, you can then uninstall the Live Mesh software.

Note : Deleting your Live Mesh account will not delete your Windows Live ID.

Uninstall the Live Mesh softwareFor Windows Vista

1. On the taskbar, click Start, then click Control Panel.

2. Under Programs, click Uninstall a program.

3. Double-click Live Mesh.

4. Click Yes.

What happens to my folders if I uninstall the Live Mesh software?

None of the folders in your mesh will be deleted if you uninstall the Live Mesh software. Folders will remain on your device, and you'll continue to have full access to them. However, any changes you make to folders on this device will no longer synchronize with your Live Desktop (The online location in which your Live Mesh folders are stored, so you can access them from the web.) , with other devices in your mesh, or with members' devices.

Note After you uninstall the Live Mesh software, the device will continue to appear on your Live Mesh Devices page until you remove the device from your mesh.

Tips for a safer mesh

Live Mesh makes it easy for you to synchronize and share information with others and access your computers from virtually anywhere. Your mesh is password-protected with your Windows Live ID (The user name and password you use to sign in to any Windows Live, MSN, or Office Live sites and services. If you have a Passport Network, Hotmail, or Windows Live Messenger account, you can use it as your Windows Live ID.) , so only you have access to it. When you share a folder with family and friends, they sign in with their own Windows Live ID to access it. All file transfers are protected using Secure Socket Layers (SSL), the same technology your online bank uses.

Follow these tips to help protect the privacy of your mesh.

Share folders with people you trustMake sure you know the people with whom you're sharing a folder. Even if someone joins a folder as a reader (Member who can only open and view files in a shared folder.) , that person can still copy files to other locations or distribute them to other people.

If you'd like to stop sharing a folder with someone, you can always remove the person as a member. Note, however, that the folder remains on the removed member's computer, but any future changes to the folder will not be synchronized. Even if you delete the folder from your mesh, it will remain on the member's devices.

Be cautious about sharing confidential informationOnce you've shared a folder with someone, they can easily copy and distribute files from the folder to other people. Make sure your shared folders don't contain personal, financial, or business information that you want to keep private.

Keep your remote computer's screen hidden when you use Live Mesh Remote Desktop

By default, the screen on your remote computer is blacked out to protect your privacy while you work. If you'd like it to be visible, in the mesh bar (Appears when you connect

Page 18: Live MESH - Yves Cornil - bienvenueyves.cornil.free.fr/mesh/Live Mesh.docx  · Web viewLive MESH. Live Mesh beta edition – ... MSN, or Office Live sites ... For example, after

to a remote computer using Live Mesh and provides quick links to unlock a remote computer and change other settings for your connection.) , click Show desktop on remote device.

Enable the synchronization and Live Mesh Remote Desktop enhancementsIf you're running Windows Vista and you plan to use Live Mesh Remote Desktop to connect remotely to computers in your mesh, make sure you enable the synchronization and Live Mesh Remote Desktop enhancements. Doing this helps ensure the best performance and a more secure connection.

Require secure logon for computers running Windows VistaYou can help ensure a more secure experience if you require secure logon for all user accounts on your computers running Windows Vista. Here's how:

1. Make sure you're logged in to Windows Vista as an administrator (A type of user account that allows complete access to the computer, including the ability to install programs and manage other user accounts.) .

2. Click Start, then click Control Panel.

3. Double-click User Accounts, then click Manage User Accounts.

4. Click the Advanced tab, select the Require users to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete check box, and then click OK.

Sign out after using Live Mesh on a public or shared computerYou can use a public computer at a library or Internet café to access your Live Desktop (The online location in which your Live Mesh folders are stored, so you can access them from the web.) . But if you don't sign out after finishing your session, everyone else can access your Live Desktop, too. Don't let a stranger gain access to your mesh. When you're done with your session, be sure to click Sign out in the upper right-hand corner of any page on the Live Mesh website.

Sync and work with folders.

Synchronize a folder

Make sure you always have the latest versions of your files available on all your computers by synchronizing your folders.

First, you'll need to add each device to your mesh. Even with just one device in your mesh, you can start adding Live Mesh folders that automatically synchronize with your Live Desktop (The online location in which your Live Mesh folders are stored, so you can access them from the web.) .

Then, when you add more computers, you can synchronize each Live Mesh folder with each new computer. You'll need to do this only once, after you add the computer, and then the folders will automatically synchronize thereafter.

To synchronize a folder already in your mesh with a new computerWhen you first add a computer to your mesh, any folders already in your mesh will appear as faded folder shortcut icons on your computer's desktop. To synchronize any of these folders with the computer, either double-click the icon or right-click the icon and click Sync with this computer. You can then rename the folder and choose a different location than the desktop for the folder. If you don't want to synchronize a folder with the computer, you can delete the icon from the desktop.

You can also:

1. Once you've added the computer, open the notifier (Appears when you click the Live Mesh icon in the notification area of your Windows taskbar and gives you quick access to the folders, computers, and news in your mesh.) , click the Folders icon Folders, and then click Manage folders. In the Live Mesh Folders window, any existing folders in your mesh will appear under Not synchronized with this computer, with a faded folder icon Live Mesh folder icon - not synchronized.

2. Double-click the folder you want to synchronize. In the Synchronize Folder dialog box, choose a location for the folder on your computer (the default location is your desktop), then click OK. The folder will reappear under Synchronized with this computer.

Note Depending on how many files are in a folder, the size of each file, and the speed of your Internet connection, it may take a while for all of the files in a folder to synchronize the first time. Files will be unavailable until they're fully synchronized.

To verify that a folder is synchronizedOn your computer, locate the folder. The folder's color should be blue Live Mesh folder icon - synchronized, and you should also see the folder on your Live Desktop.

Delete a folder

You can delete a folder from your mesh, or you can delete a folder from a device.

Deleting a folder from your mesh removes the folder from your Live Desktop (The online location in which your Live Mesh folders are stored, so you can access them from the web.) and stops synchronizing the folder with your devices and with any members' devices. It does not delete the folder from those devices.

Deleting a folder from a device deletes it from that device only. It does not delete it from your Live Desktop, from other devices in your mesh, or from members' devices. The

Page 20: Live MESH - Yves Cornil - bienvenueyves.cornil.free.fr/mesh/Live Mesh.docx  · Web viewLive MESH. Live Mesh beta edition – ... MSN, or Office Live sites ... For example, after

folder will remain on those devices and continue to synchronize with them. And you can always synchronize the folder again if you like.

To delete a folder from your mesh

1. Click link to go to your Live Desktop Go to your Live Desktop and locate the folder you want to delete.

2. Hold down CONTROL while you click the folder, then click Delete.

3. In the Delete "[folder name]" from my mesh dialog box, click Delete.

Note : If you have a right-click-enabled mouse, you can also right-click a folder on your Live Desktop, then click Delete.

To delete a folder from your Mac

* Drag the folder into the Trash.

Note: If you have a right-click-enabled mouse, you can also right-click a folder on your Mac, then click Move to Trash.

Notes

* Deleting a subfolder deletes it everywhere—from your computer, from other computers in your mesh, from any members' computers, and from your Live Desktop. However, if you delete a subfolder accidentally, you can recover it from the Trash on your Mac. If the subfolder was only on your Live Desktop, the subfolder and its files will be permanently deleted.

* You may need different permissions to perform this folder action. Learn more about Live Mesh folder permissions.

What happens to my files if I delete a folder?

In many cases, you can recover files from a folder you've deleted, depending on the method you used to delete that folder.

If you delete the folder from your Live DesktopIf you were synchronizing the folder with a computer, upon deletion the folder will remain on that computer. However, any changes you make to it will no longer synchronize with other computers.

If you were storing the folder only on your Live Desktop (The online location in which your Live Mesh folders are stored, so you can access them from the web.) , the folder and its files will be permanently deleted.

If you delete the folder from a computerDeleting a folder from a computer deletes it from that computer only. The folder and its files will remain on your Live Desktop, on other computers in your mesh, and on members' computers, giving you multiple ways to access the folder and its files again.

You can also recover the folder from the Trash on your Mac:

* From the Dock, click the Trash icon. Drag the folder out of the Trash and onto your desktop.

Note: Deleting a subfolder deletes it everywhere—from your computer, from other computers in your mesh, from any members' computers, and from your Live Desktop.

However, if you delete a subfolder accidentally, you can recover it from the Trash on your Mac. If the subfolder was only on your Live Desktop, the subfolder and its files will be permanently deleted.

Delete a file

You can delete a file from a Live Mesh folder just as you would from any other folder. And if you accidentally delete a file from a synchronized folder, either from your Live Desktop (The online location in which your Live Mesh folders are stored, so you can access them from the web.) or from your Mac, you can recover it from the Trash.

To delete a file from your Live Desktop 1. From your Live Desktop, open the folder containing the file you want to delete.

2. Hold down CONTROL while you click the folder, then click Delete.

3. Click OK.

Note If you have a right-click-enabled mouse, you can also right-click a file on your Live Desktop, then click Delete.

Warning

If you or a member deletes a file that exists only on the Live Desktop, the file will be permanently deleted. To make sure you don't lose the file, copy it to a nonshared folder on your device.

To delete a file from your Mac * Drag the file into the Trash.

Note: If you have a right-click-enabled mouse, you can also right-click a file on your Mac, then click Move to Trash.

Warning : You may need different permissions to perform this folder action. Learn more about Live Mesh folder permissions.

Copy or move files between folders

You can copy or move files between Live Mesh folders on your Mac exactly the same ways you copy or move files between other folders:

To copy a file 1. Hold down CONTROL while clicking the file, and then click Copy "[file name]".

2. Open the destination folder.

3. Press and hold CONTROL while clicking inside the destination folder, then click Paste Item.

Note: If you have a right-click-enabled mouse, you can also right-click the file to select copy and paste options.

To move a file * Drag and drop the file between Live Mesh folders, or between a Live Mesh folder and any other folder.

Page 22: Live MESH - Yves Cornil - bienvenueyves.cornil.free.fr/mesh/Live Mesh.docx  · Web viewLive MESH. Live Mesh beta edition – ... MSN, or Office Live sites ... For example, after

Note : If you move a file from a synchronized folder to a folder you haven't synchronized, the file will no longer be synchronized or shared with other members or devices in your mesh.

Notes

* The ability to copy or move files between folders on your Live Desktop (The online location in which your Live Mesh folders are stored, so you can access them from the web.) is coming soon.

* You may need different permissions to perform this folder action. Learn more about Live Mesh folder permissions.

Rename a folder

Each folder in Live Mesh can have two names:

* The folder name in Live Mesh. This name can only be changed from the Live Desktop and is the name always displayed in the mesh bar (Appears when you open a Live Mesh folder, allowing you to invite and remove members, read and post news items, and change synchronization settings.) , the notifier (Appears when you click the Live Mesh icon in the notification area of your Windows taskbar and gives you quick access to the folders, computers, and news in your mesh.) , and news for every device.

* The folder name on your device. If you synchronize a folder with a device, then you may need to give it a different name on your device so you can distinguish it from other folders with the same name.

These two names can be identical, but there are occasions when they may be different. For example, imagine if three friends share folders named "Photos" with you. On the Live Desktop, you'll see three different folders named "Photos" and, because others are sharing these folders, you don't want to change the folder name in Live Mesh. However, if you try to synchronize all three folders with a device, you may need to change the folder names on that device so you can save the folders to the same location or easily identify each folder.

To rename a folder in Live Mesh 1. Go to your web desktop Go to your Live Desktop and locate the folder you want to rename.

2. Right-click the folder, then click Rename.

3. In the text box below the folder icon, type a new name for the folder, then press ENTER.

Note If you rename a synchronized folder in Live Mesh, the new folder name will appear on other synchronized devices only in the mesh bar once you open the folder on those devices.

To rename a folder from your desktopThis feature is not currently available. If you rename a synchronized folder from a Windows computer, rather than from your Live Desktop, the folder will stop synchronizing with your Live Desktop.

Note You may need different permissions to perform this folder action.

About folder permissions

Page 23: Live MESH - Yves Cornil - bienvenueyves.cornil.free.fr/mesh/Live Mesh.docx  · Web viewLive MESH. Live Mesh beta edition – ... MSN, or Office Live sites ... For example, after

You can limit the types of changes others can make to your shared folders. For example, you may not want certain members to be able to delete files or invite people you don't know to join the folder.

When you invite others to share a folder, you can choose which level of access to give them:

* Creator: The creator of the folder. Can create, read, update, and delete files; add, remove, or change permissions for members; and choose to stop synchronizing a folder with the Live Desktop. This permission cannot be changed.

* Owner: Can create, read, update, and delete files as well as add, remove, or change permissions for members.

* Contributor: Can create, read, update, and delete files but cannot add, remove, or change permissions for members.

* Reader: Can only open and view files. (Readers will see a notification at the top of the Live Mesh bar (Appears when you open a Live Mesh folder, allowing you to invite and remove members, read and post news items, and change synchronization settings.) indicating that the folder is read-only.)

If you're the creator or an owner of a folder, you can change another member's permissions at any time.

To change a member's permissions 1. Open the folder.

2. In the mesh bar, click Members, and then click Manage.

3. In the Manage Members dialog box, locate the member whose permissions you want to change, then use the corresponding drop-down menu under Permissions to select a different level.

4. Click OK.

You can also access the Manage Members dialog box by right-clicking a Live Mesh folder on your computer, then clicking Live Mesh Options, and then clicking Manage members in Live Mesh folder.

Notes

* If a member's permissions are changed either to or from reader, the folder may stop synchronizing with Live Mesh. To resynchronize the folder, open the notifier (Appears when you click the Live Mesh icon in the notification area of your Windows taskbar and gives you quick access to the folders, computers, and news in your mesh.) , click the Folders icon, and then click the folder name.

* To use Live Mesh, you need a Windows Live ID (The user name and password you use to sign in to any Windows Live, MSN, or Office Live sites and services. If you have a Passport Network, Hotmail, or Windows Live Messenger account, you can use it as your Windows Live ID.) .

Change synchronization settings

You can change how and when a Live Mesh folder synchronizes with devices in your mesh—including your Live Desktop (The online location in which your Live Mesh folders are stored, so you can access them from the web.) —right from the folder.

To change a folder's synchronization settings 1. Open the folder.

2. In the mesh bar (Appears when you open a Live Mesh folder, allowing you to invite and remove members, read and post news items, and change synchronization settings.) , click Synchronized Devices, then click Settings.

3. In the Change Synchronization dialog box, select a device, then choose a synchronization option:

* When files are added or modified: Automatically synchronizes a folder with the device whenever files are added to the folder or changes to a file are saved.

* Never with this device: Stops synchronizing the folder with the device.

4. Click OK.

Notes

* If you stop synchronizing a folder with your Live Desktop, that folder will continue to synchronize with other Windows PCs in your mesh, according to your synchronization settings, but files in the folder will no longer synchronize with any Mac computers in your mesh.

* Not all synchronization options are available. Some are early peeks at features under development.

To stop synchronizing a folder with all your devices and your Live Desktop 1. Click link to go to your Live Desktop Go to your Live Desktop.

2. Right-click the folder you want to stop synchronizing, then click Delete.

This will delete the folder from your Live Desktop and stop synchronizing it with all your devices and members' devices, but won't delete it from any devices.

Note You may need different permissions to perform this folder action.

Troubleshoot synchronization

If you're unable to synchronize your folders, try these steps:

Make sure the folder is a Live Mesh folderOnly Live Mesh folders will synchronize across all your devices. For more information, see Add a folder.

Make sure your computer is onlineYou won't be able to synchronize updates to your Live Mesh folders if you're not connected to the Internet. See Troubleshoot connectivity and sign-in for more help with connectivity issues.

Page 25: Live MESH - Yves Cornil - bienvenueyves.cornil.free.fr/mesh/Live Mesh.docx  · Web viewLive MESH. Live Mesh beta edition – ... MSN, or Office Live sites ... For example, after

Make sure you're synchronizing files that are supported by Live MeshLive Mesh blocks certain files, depending on their location and type. Learn more about files you cannot share or synchronize.

Make sure files have had enough time to synchronizeWhen a file is actively synchronizing, it will be unavailable. Wait a few moments for the file to finish synchronizing, then try to open it. You can view synchronization progress in the Devices pane of the notifier (Appears when you click the Live Mesh icon in the notification area of your Windows taskbar and gives you quick access to the folders, computers, and news in your mesh.) .

Note Files synchronize only once they're closed. If you and someone else are editing the same file simultaneously and want to see each other's changes, you must save and close the file to synchronize changes, then reopen it.

Close the program you used to save a fileA file may not start synchronizing until you have closed the program in which the file was last saved. For example, after editing a Microsoft Word file, you must also exit Word.

Make sure your folders are set to synchronize with your Live DesktopIf you stop synchronizing a folder with your Live Desktop, that folder will also stop synchronizing with your Mac.

Make sure you haven't exceeded your storage limit for your Live DesktopLive Mesh offers 5 gigabytes (GB) of storage for files on your Live Desktop. If you go over your limit, Live Mesh will stop synchronizing files with your Live Desktop until you clear out some space. Learn more about storage limits. You can also choose to synchronize folders between computers in your mesh but not with your Live Desktop. For more information, see About peer-to-peer synchronization.

Check your folder permissionsIf you're sharing a folder with other people, and your permission level is set to reader (Member who can only open and view files in a shared folder.) , any changes you make to files in that folder will not appear on your Live Desktop or on other members' devices. In addition, if an creator (Member who created the folder; can create, read, update, and delete files; manage folder membership, and stop synchronizing a folder with the Live Desktop. This permission level cannot be changed.) , owner (Member who can create, read, update, and delete files as well as manage folder membership.) or contributor (Member who can create, read, update, and delete files but cannot manage folder membership.) edits a file you've changed, your changes will be overwritten. You can recover your version of the file from the Recycle Bin on your computer.

Make sure another member didn't delete your file or folderIf you're sharing a folder with other people, depending on their permissions, they can also delete files and folders you've invited them to share. Most of the time, these deletions are recoverable. Learn more about deleting a file and deleting a folder.

Note You can prevent another member from deleting a shared file or folder by changing their permissions.

Make sure your Live Mesh folders are set to synchronize with your deviceIf you changed a folder's synchronization settings, that might be why you're unable to access it from a particular device in your mesh. See Change synchronization settings for more information.

Remove and then re-synchronize the folder 1. Open the notifier, click the Folders icon Folders, then click Manage folders.

2. Right-click the folder that isn't synchronizing, then click Delete.

* To use Messenger from the Live Mesh bar, you must be signed in to both Live Mesh and Windows Live Messenger with the same Windows Live ID.

Resolve synchronization conflicts

In general, if you're sharing a folder with others or synchronizing it across multiple devices, and changes are being made to the folder or one of its files, the most recently saved version is the one that gets synchronized for all members.

But sometimes synchronization conflicts can occur, and these require a folder creator (Member who created the folder; can create, read, update, and delete files; manage folder membership, and stop synchronizing a folder with the Live Desktop. This permission level cannot be changed.) , owner (Member who can create, read, update, and delete files as well as manage folder membership.) , or contributor (Member who can create, read, update, and delete files but cannot manage folder membership.) to resolve. Conflicts can arise for several reasons, including:

* Two members make conflicting changes to a file or folder at the same time or while working offline

* You make conflicting changes to a file or folder on different devices in your mesh

* A member edits a file at the same time another member deletes it

* Different members add files with the same name to a folder

If there's a conflict in a folder, you'll see a notification in the Live Mesh bar (Appears when you open a Live Mesh folder, allowing you to invite and remove members, read and post news items, and change synchronization settings.) . Click the notification to see more details about the conflict and how you can resolve it. You can resolve a conflict from either your computer or your Live Desktop (The online location in which your Live Mesh folders are stored, so you can access them from the web.) .

If you know that you and other members are going to be working in a folder at the same time, it's a good idea to save each version of a file under a different name. This way you can refer to older versions without worrying about writing over important changes.

Note You may need different permissions to perform this folder action.

About Live Mesh software updates

When you add a device to your mesh, a program called Live Mesh gets installed on that device. This software makes it possible for the Live Mesh service to communicate with your device and synchronize files and folders across your mesh. As new versions of the Live Mesh service are released, the Live Mesh software on your device must also be updated in order to keep working properly with the service.

If an update is available, you'll see a dialog box the next time you open the Live Mesh application on your Mac. You'll have the option to either skip or download the update. We strongly recommend downloading these updates to make sure you have the latest version of the Live Mesh software installed and your Mac continues to synchronize with other devices in your mesh.

What happens if I remove a device or uninstall the Live Mesh software?

None of the folders in your mesh will be deleted if you uninstall the Live Mesh software from your computer or remove your computer from your mesh. Folders will remain on your computer, and you'll continue to have full access to them. However, any changes you make to folders on this computer will no longer synchronize with your Live Desktop (The online location in which your Live Mesh folders are stored, so you can access them from the web.) , with other computers in your mesh, or with members' computers.

How will I know if I've exceeded my Live Desktop storage limit?

* If you're in the process of adding files or synchronizing a folder on your Live Desktop, you'll see a message.

Notes

* Live Mesh folders will continue to synchronize among Windows computers in your mesh even if you exceed your storage limit for your Live Desktop. However, any files you add to those folders after reaching your storage limit will not synchronize with your Live Desktop or with any Mac computers in your mesh until you clear out some space on your Live Desktop.

* Files in shared folders on the Live Desktop count only toward the folder creator's storage limit.

Troubleshoot installationIf you encounter issues during installation or Live Mesh fails to start, try these steps:

Make sure you have administrator privileges for your MacWhen you install the Live Mesh software, you might be prompted to enter administrator (A type of user account that allows complete access to the computer, including the ability to install programs and manage other user accounts.) credentials in order to be able to modify the Applications folder on your computer.

Repair your disk permissionsIt's possible you encountered a file system issue with your Mac. Try using the Mac's Disk Utility to repair the problem, then install Live Mesh again:

1. Quit Live Mesh.

2. From the Finder, in the menu bar, click Go, then click Applications.

3. Double-click Utilities, then double-click Disk Utility.

4. In the left-hand window, select Macintosh HD (your hard disk).

5. In the main window, select the First Aid tab.

6. Click Repair Disk Permissions.

7. Once disk permissions have been repaired, quit Disk Utility and try installing Live Mesh again.
