Another View
of Seventh-day
Adventists…
Here is a book that looks at
four places in the world
where people live the
longest: Sardinia, Italy;
Okinawa, Japan; the
Nicoya Peninsula, Costa
Rica; and Loma Linda,
California.
Their living longer is not
due to pills, surgery, or
medications.
Living longer in these
“Blue Zones” involves
lifestyle, and choices
Loma Linda’s Blue Zone Secrets
• Have a sanctuary in
time-the Sabbath
• Maintain a healthy body
weight
• Regular moderate
exercise
• Spend time with like
minded friends-we go to
church!
• Snack on nuts
• Give something back-do
ministry
• Eat meat in moderation-
if at all. The author
thinks this is a side dish
for “many” of us
• Eat an early light dinner
• Put more fruit in the diet
• Drink plenty of water
What are We Really
Doing?
A Revealing Look
At Diet in our
Church…
Adventist Health Study-2 (2002-2008)
• Total vegetarians (vegan)—4%
• Lacto-ovo vegetarians—31% (eat eggs and
dairy)
• Pesco vegetarians—11% (eat fish daily)
• Semi-vegetarians—6% ( eat meat more than
once monthly, but less than once weekly)
• Non-vegetarians—46%
Adventist Health Study-2
A look at Black Church Members
• 25% of Black SDA’s are Vegetarians
• On the average Black SDA’s are overweight
• Average BMI for men 27.4 and for women
29.6 (This should be less than 25)
• Elevated BMI causes increased risk of
diabetes, hypertension heart disease and
certain cancers
Some Conclusions From The Adventist
Health Study…
• Frequent eating of fruits and vegetables lowers the risk of several cancers (colon, prostate)
• Eating nuts and whole grains reduces the risk of heart attack
• The closer you are to being vegetarian the lower the risk of high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
• The closer you are to being vegetarian, the better for weight control
The Adventist Health Message… It Works!
It Started With A Vision… In June, 1863 Ellen G.
White received her first major health reform vision. She received other visions on health and wrote an extensive body of information that serves as the framework for our health ministry today.
“I saw that it was a sacred duty to attend to our health, and arouse others to their duty”
