While it’s long been known that physical activity massively reduces the risk of developing certain diseases, a major new study suggests ex- ercise may also be as effective as drugs at treating conditions like heart disease and stroke. Although people who suffer from such illnesses shouldn’t just throw their tablets away, the implication is that regular exercise should be as import- ant a part of their treatment regime as medication. The new study, by research- ers at the London School of Economics, Harvard Medical School and Stanford Uni- versity School of Medicine, analysed the results of 305 trials involving nearly 340,000 people, comparing the effect- iveness of exercise and drugs on preventing death. Professor Mark Batt, a sport and exercise medicine con- sultant at Nottingham Uni- versity Hospitals, says: “Phys- ical activity is extremely important for health, and we know there’s compelling evid- ence for both the prevention of chronic diseases and now in treatment. “There was already inform- ation about how effective ex- ercise is in reducing the risk of developing chronic diseases such as diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure, and also de- pression, osteoporosis and others, but this study gives more information about its ef- fectiveness as a treatment, and that’s really important.” But while physical activity is clearly good for your health on several levels, only 14 per cent of UK adults exercise reg- ularly, and recent British Heart Foundation figures show that only a third meet recommended levels of phys- ical activity. Part of the problem is, of course, that often it’s easier to reach for the pills than it is to exercise. But Batt points out that people don’t need to join a gym and make a huge effort to achieve the benefits of being active. Just taking the recommen- ded weekly 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise is enough to really make a dif- ference. “We’re struggling to get enough people to meet phys- ical activity guidelines,” says Batt. “Society is partly to blame – we like things to be very easy. “But this isn’t about buying a new tracksuit and running shoes, it’s about a lifestyle change.” Although there’s “a moun- tain of evidence” that physical activity is very good for health, Batt says there’s a lack of evidence about the exercise prescription that works best. “We won’t find a perfect dose because we’re all differ- ent,” he explains. “What’s right for one person may not be for somebody else.” Live life to the full Whatever form of exercise you choose to do, a basic level of fitness can help fight illnesses While physical activity is clearly good for your health on several levels, only 14 per cent of UK adults exercise regularly, and recent British Heart Foundation figures show that only a third meet recommended levels of physical activity We specialise in all legal services for private individuals including Will Writing, Estate Administration and Asset Protection. 2430/2440 The Quadrant, Aztec West, Almondsbury, BS32 4AQ Tel 01454 300 600 email [email protected] Mon - Fri 9am to 5.30pm Help Us to Help You Look after your l ved ones www.hutchinson-legal.co.uk Turn to next page

Popping out for a regularbrisk walk or cycle, and usingthe stairs instead of the lift, could be as good as poppingpills for some conditions.

While it’s long been knownthat physical activitymassively reduces the risk ofdeveloping certain diseases, amajor new study suggests ex-ercise may also be as effectiveas drugs at treating conditionslike heart disease and stroke.

Although people who sufferfrom such illnesses shouldn’tjust throw their tablets away, the implication is that regularexercise should be as import-ant a part of their treatmentregime as medication.

The new study, by research-ers at the London School ofEconomics, Harvard MedicalSchool and Stanford Uni-versity School of Medicine, analysed the results of 305trials involving nearly 340,000

people, comparing the effect-iveness of exercise and drugson preventing death.

It found being active wasjust as good as medicine forthose with existing heart dis-ease, and in the prevention ofdiabetes, and a more effectivetreatment than drugs forpeople who’d suffered as t ro ke.

Professor Mark Batt, a sportand exercise medicine con-sultant at Nottingham Uni-versity Hospitals, says: “P hy s -ical activity is extremelyimportant for health, and weknow there’s compelling evid-ence for both the prevention ofchronic diseases and now int re at m e n t .

“There was already inform-ation about how effective ex-ercise is in reducing the risk ofdeveloping chronic diseasessuch as diabetes, stroke, highblood pressure, and also de-pression, osteoporosis andothers, but this study givesmore information about its ef-

fectiveness as a treatment, andt h at ’s really important.”

But while physical activityis clearly good for your healthon several levels, only 14 percent of UK adults exercise reg-ularly, and recent BritishHeart Foundation figuresshow that only a third meetrecommended levels of phys-ical activity.

Part of the problem is, ofcourse, that often it’s easier toreach for the pills than it is toexercise. But Batt points outthat people don’t need to join agym and make a huge effort toachieve the benefits of beinga c t ive.

Just taking the recommen-ded weekly 150 minutes ofmoderate intensity exercise isenough to really make a dif-f e re n c e.

“We ’re struggling to getenough people to meet phys-ical activity guidelines,” s ay sBatt. “Society is partly toblame – we like things to bevery easy.

“But this isn’t about buyinga new tracksuit and runningshoes, it’s about a lifestylechang e.”

Although there’s “a moun-tain of evidence” that physicalactivity is very good forhealth, Batt says there’s a lackof evidence about the exerciseprescription that works best.

“We won’t find a perfectdose because we’re all differ-ent,” he explains. “W h at ’sright for one person may notbe for somebody else.”
