Welcome

A major exhibition showing a wide range of original figurative, semi-abstract and abstract works from a group of local artists. The theme of the exhibition, ‘Inside Outside’, will be explored in different mediums by each artist.

Inside/Outside II

‘Concept’ showcases a broad range of contemporary artworks selected by curator Sam Roddan of Art Pop-up, from the organisation’s recent projects and resident artists. Brought together as a strange and fascinating collection, each artwork concocts a story, engenders enquiry and deliberation as its premise, rather than a fundamental appreciation of beauty. The Chiaroscuro Quartet performs music of the Classical Period on gut stringed instruments and with a historical approach. Their performances are highly acclaimed all over Europe.

The Quartet bring Mozart’s Divertimento in F major to Stamford, an early masterpiece written at the age of 16 and Haydn’s string quartet Op. 20, no. 2. They will also play Schubert’s ‘Death and the Maiden’, written in 1824 when he realised he was dying.

Learn or develop your skills of felting fibres in these half day classes. Lots of techniques will be taught and participants will come away with a complete and unique piece of art at the end of each class. We will be exploring Merino, Shetland and other wool fibres and combining them with silk, sparkles, nepps and lots of other natural materials. The autumn term focuses on wet felting but needle felting and embellishing the finished pieces will also be taught. He’s back again! John Shuttleworth, wants to share fond memories of his favourite past weekends. However, a typo on the poster means John is obliged to spend the evening paying homage to his next-door neighbour and sole agent-the diminutive Ken Worthington.

He’ll probably end up doing both! In this brand new show, Shuttleworth (‘Sheffield’s funniest man’-The Times) will perform classic tunes such as ‘I Can’t Go Back To Savoury Now’ as well as new ditties like ‘Bitter Sweet Memories’ and ‘Relatives In Rotherham’.

Would you like to be Stamford’s next Poet Laureate? For this role, you will be required to write a few poems per year to order and to be available for a small number of civic events as and when required. The workload is never huge and often great fun. Please submit your poem by March 31st; full entry details on our website. Final to be held at the Arts Centre on April 29th at 8pm.

JUNIOR COMPETITIONWe are also holding a junior competition with the theme, “Where I live”. Entries are welcome in three categories...under 9’s; under 13’s and 13-17 years. Award winning poet Wendy Cope will be judging and will award prizes from Walkers Bookshops and Stamford Arts Centre. Winners will also have their poems published in the Stamford Mercury. Prizes will be presented by Wendy before her performance at Stamford Arts Centre on Sunday, April 26th.

The Mandolinquents feature everything from hot swing and ragtime instrumentals from the mandolin orchestras of the 1930s: Irving Berlin, Mozart, Ravel and Tchaikovsky to lively reels and beautiful traditional Irish airs to Chinese and Brazilian folk tunes.

All this played with infectious fun, off-beat humour and stunning virtuosity on mandolin, mandola, mandocello, mandobass and classical guitar, with the occasional burst of song or fiddle.

JACQUELINE ROSS AND LINDA NICHOLSONON A EUROPEAN TOUR WITH CHARLES BURNEYComposer and musical historian, Charles Burney (1726 - 1814), planned writing a history of music, but he had to go to Europe to gather materials which were not available in Great Britain. Beginning his tour in 1770 and travelling throughout Europe over the next few years, he met many fine musicians. Jacqueline Ross, professor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and Linda Nicholson, performer of Classical-era repertory on period keyboard instruments, will perform this concert on a Guardagini violin of 1777 and a Johann Schanz fortepiano of 1797.

In August 2014, as part our ongoing commitment to giving young people a voice in our venues, LOV took a group of 6 young people aged 18-24 to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. This gave them the chance to see some brand new ground breaking theatre, to be inspired and to gain an insight into how an internationally renowned festival is run. The young people came back to Lincolnshire with a list of shows and ideas they would like to bring to the county, one of which was Broke by The Paper Birds...

Broke is a heartfelt and urgent look at the debt of a Nation from displaced families and gambling addictions, to beans on toast and blind leaps of faith onto the property ladder. After her triumphant performance in Eugene Onegin, soprano Anna Netrebko takes on another heroine in the first opera of this intriguing double bill; an enchanting fairy tale followed by an erotic psychological thriller.

Netrebko stars as the beautiful blind girl who experiences love for the first time in Iolanta. Nadja Michael is the victim of the diabolical Bluebeard, played by Mikhail Petrenko.

Both operas are directed by Mariusz Trelinski, who was inspired by classic film noir of the 1940s. Iolanta also stars Piotr Beczala, and Valery Gergiev conducts both operas.

Shakespeare’s comic romance plays out amidst the high spirits of a post-war house party in autumn 1918. As memories of the trenches give way to a life of parties and masked balls, Claudio and Hero fall in love, while Benedick and Beatrice reignite their own altogether more combative courtship.

Christopher Luscombe directs the second of Shakespeare’s matching pair of comedies. Better known as Much Ado About Nothing, the play is performed under the title Love’s Labour’s Won, a name possibly given to it during Shakespeare’s lifetime.

The Cropper Welsh Roscoe Trio are three of Britain’s finest chamber musicians: violinist Peter Crooper, founder member of The Lindsays, Moray Welsh, form Principle Cellist of the London Symphony Orchestra and Martin Roscoe, one of Britain’s finest pianists.

They are joined by Martin Cropper, Peter’s son and the Music Director of the Music Academy in Sheffield

During this workshop we are working with the copper foiling method to produce an attractive candle box. By cutting the coloured glass to shape, foiling each piece and soldering them together the four sides of the candle box are made. These are then soldered together with a base to make the completed piece. The finished candle boxes are ideal for night lights and cast beautiful colours when lit. All designs and a selection of coloured glass are provided. Limited to 8 places.

The European Union Chamber Orchestra, established in 1981, is a musical ambassador for the European Union and tours extensively throughout Europe and the world.

The concert opens with the third of

Respighi’s suites of Ancient Airs and Dances, a 16th and 17th century Italian guitar and lute music. This contrasts with Delius’ Air and Dance written in 1911.

The concerto is Haydn’s C major Cello Concerto. The symphony is Mozart’s 40th, written in 1788.

Bill Taylor is the current Stamford Poet Laureate and one of his objectives whilst in post is to promote the writing and performing of poetry in schools in the local area. TICKETSYou can collect your prepaid tickets from the Box Office at any time leading up to the performance, or we can post them to you for a charge of 99p. Tickets bought online are subject to a £1 transaction fee (not per ticket).

RESERVATIONSTickets for live events (not cinema), may also be provisionally reserved over the phone. Payment must be made within three working days or half an hour before the performance, whichever is sooner. Failure to do so may result in the tickets being released for resale.

DISCOUNTSDiscounts (priced in brackets) vary from show to show. Generally they are available to Artscene members, children and students, unwaged, over 60s, disabled patrons and their companion.Occasionally, discounts are unavailable for certain events organised by outside organisations, for which we are the ticket agent.

GROUP BOOKINGSPlease contact the Box Office if you are planning to bring a large group of 10 or more to a show.

PARKINGParking is available at Wharf Road, Cattle Market, Bath Row and St Leonard’s Street car parks.All are free on Sundays and after 6pm. There is parking for disabled badge holders close to the Arts Centre in St Mary’s Street and St George’s Square.

COFFEE SHOPRelax in our friendly foyer coffee shop or in the historical ante-room by the Gallery where a variety of hot and cold snacks and drinks are available. Open Monday to Saturday 9.30am to 8pm and during some intervals. There is free Wi-Fi access too!

SWEET KIOSKStock-up at the sweet kiosk in the theatre foyer for all shows and films where we have a huge selection of snacks, hot and cold drinks and ice creams. Open before all performances and during intervals.

GIFT VOUCHERSYou can buy a gift voucher for any amount you require from the Box Office.

CHILDRENWe have baby changing facilities on the ground floor. We recommend that you do not leave the building if you have children 8 years or under in a workshop. Under 12s must be accompanied by an adult in the Theatre/Ballroom.

REFUNDSWe regret that we are unable to give cash refunds. If an event is sold out, we will try to resell unwanted tickets. An administration fee of £1 per transaction is charged for this service, if your tickets are sold on. We will credit your account for you to use against a future purchase. The management reserves the right to change the programme if necessary without notice.
