Dear Friends:

SUMMER!!!

The Solstice came, bright, warm and as lengthy as we might expect. The fullness of growing Summer heat now surrounds us until some distant day in Autumn when suddenly...we will be closing the windows at night, break-ing out the sweaters and enjoying the full weight of the comforter at night rather than throwing it off the bed. Until then, light the BBQs, remember how to find your favorite beach, practice making some new weekend cocktails (or weekday ones for that matter) and squeeze as much life out of the next 13 weeks as you possibly can.

For a whole bunch of priests throughout the Diocese of Orange, these residual days of June are very busy and highly ‘emotive’ in as much as about 1/5th of the clergy are transitioning from one assignment to another. This necessarily entails lots of good byes, dinners, packing, fresh introductions and relocations. Within each Rectory as one space is vacated it normally gets freshened, carpets cleaned, perhaps walls repainted and anything broken is repaired...at least that is what is SUPPOSED to happen. What goes unseen are the emotions of departures and arrivals, of staffs adjusting to accommodate a new participant, of the newly assigned priest becoming familiar with new surroundings, a new schedule and fresh demands...all while being discombobulated at the familiar having being taken away and the unknown NEW suddenly surrounding him. Parish communities will meet and greet the newcomers on the first weekend of July....there are those who rush to ingratiate themselves with the new priest....usually with the biggest hidden agendas.... there are those who get upset because the new priest might actually have his own way of going about things...there are those who are kind and drop off welcoming gifts of cookies, wine, or, God forbid, vegetable platters and then there are the VAST number of parishioners who smile warmly and remember, this is what Catholic parishes have always experienced...hellos and goodbyes. I remind you of this so that, in your kindness you might share a prayer or two on behalf of the communities and priests experiencing the stresses of being Catholic.

Elsewhere in this Bulletin and on our website as well, is an article from America Magazine regarding the VATI-CAN SURVEY directed to teens and young adults in advance of the 2018 World Synod in Rome that will focus on how best to evangelize and do meaningful outreach to the YOUTH and YOUNG ADULTS of the WORLD. The Survey is for the YOUTH themselves to complete and return to those assembling the Synod....and this is a big deal. Rather than talk to a lot of adults about what THEY think is the best way to evangelize the young, the overseer’s of the 2018 Synod are asking the Youth and Young Adults themselves about their needs, priorities, per-ceptions, understandings of faith, desire for faith, and on and on. It is open and available NOT JUST to Catholic Youth and Young Adults but to ALL YOUTH and YOUNG ADULTS: Catholic, other Christian denominations, non-Christian faiths and even those who do not believe and those who have no faith at all. Not limited to just who official Diocesan officials think should take the survey, I encourage you to copy and send the article to as many assorted people from your circles as you are able. The more input the better...the Holy Spirit will help sort through the diversity and filter out the fraudulent...but the best possible input will be the honest thoughts and reflections of the Youth and Young Adults themselves.

We have received a few notes and cards intended for Seminarian Daniel Seo.... he is no longer in residence here at Santa Clara. Following his family’s vacation he will be returning, in early July, to St. John’s Seminary for an extended and intensive month of spirituality and prayer, followed by a return to his normal academic regimen. Your notes are best sent direct to Daniel at St. John’s: Seminarian Daniel Seo, St. John’s Seminary, 5012 Seminary Rd, Camarillo, CA 93012.

As I mention in the Worship Aid, next weekend will be our opportunity, as the FULL Santa Clara family, to an-ticipate and celebrate the 241st birthday of the USofA. I invite you to dig out your red, whites and blues, your flag shirts, sweaters and pins...and most importantly, gather with us as we don’t just celebrate what has BEEN, but ask the Holy Spirit to guide where we are GOING. Each day brings new challenges to many of our sensibilities. More than a few have spoken to me of their inner unsettlement and fears...this is a new experience for many of us. When confronted with things I do not understand I am reminded of my own admonition shared over the years with you and others...societal agitation and uncertainty is the surest sign of the presence of God’s grace....changing, reshaping, reforming the world as God desires it to be. The temptation is strong to badger God with restoring the world to what WE remember it being... but the task of a disciple is to SEE and TRUST that God is in the midst of all that is occurring...even within the uncertainty and turmoil...and GO FORWARD. Sometimes in these late June/early July days, the best prayer, especially when we are not feeling very articulate are the simple words....God....please bless the USA. See you next weekend, enjoy the foods of SummerFest and remember, you are loved. FKB

June 24-25, 2017Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jeremiah 20:10-13 Romans 5:12-15 Matthew 10:26-33

Some people have exceptional recall, the ability to remember the names of people they met casually dozens of years prior. Some of us, myself included, forget the reason we go into the kitchen or garage and end up smacking our foreheads for forgetting the simple chores of daily living....or like the time I forgot my own mother’s whole name when introducing her to someone! On this first full weekend of Summer and in the midst of our SummerFest celebrations, we are reminded that God NEVER forgets any of his children....the question though is whether we will remember God and turn to him regularly within our lives as a guide, teacher, inspiration, as our strength and salvation. People with whom we were ONCE familiar become facially unrecognizable to us through the passage of time if we have not had repeat contact, even their names will become forgotten, especially if they are not woven into the events of our daily lives. Think for a moment of all the names of the kids you once knew in your elementary classrooms, with whom you perhaps played ball or exchanged lunch treats...and now, 10, 20, 40 or 50 years later many are nothing but a blur, lost to time. How regular, deep and insightful are our conversations with God? Do we invite God into our decision-making, our driving, our conversations, our deliberations? Is God a continual part of each day or is it easier and easier to put off a God-conversation for another day...which can become two, three or seven days? The less and less we converse, listen and share with God, the harder it becomes to automatically call upon him in times of trouble or confusion...harder to trust that he will remember who we are....harder for us to believe that he actually cares...which makes it easier and easier to stop conversing regularly with Father, Son or Holy Spirit. It is NOT that God forgets any of us or turns away from any of us....but all too often we are the ones that stop talking with him and turn away. Even the hairs on our heads are counted...so well are we known by God....and as a special bonus, when we are on speaking terms with the God of the universe....we need fear no one!

Thank you for sharing these first weekend days of Summer with our Santa Clara community. Outside (and inside depending on if the doors are open) you can smell the delicious aromas of our SummerFest Food Fair...so please come out and enjoy the offered delights. Exchange whatever amount of cash or credit you wish to spend for food coupons at the $$$ Exchange Tables and then have whatever you want. If you wish to spend more, come on back and get more coupons. Soda, wine, beer, water, margaritas, hamburgers, chili, Filipino Food...it and more is all available for you...take some home for a snack or for tomorrow’s lunch. Bulletins await you and as next weekend is the weekend PRIOR to the Fourth of July, make sure to break out your Red, White and Blue to pay special honor to our 241st birthday. As you munch your way through SummerFest, please know that you are loved. FKB

Vatican releases online questionnaire for youthCarol Glatz Catholic News Service | Jun. 14, 2017 VATICAN CITY to involve young people in preparations for the Synod of Bishops on youth in 2018, the Vatican has released an online questionnaire to better understand the lives, attitudes and concerns of 16 to 29-year-olds around the world.

The questionnaire — available in English, Spanish, French and Italian — can be found on the synod’s official site: youth.synod2018.va/content/synod2018/it.html and is open to any young person, regardless of faith or religious belief. (A link to the survey can be found on the Home Page of the Santa Clara de Asis Website)

The general secretariat of the synod launched the website June 14th to share information about the October 2018 synod on “Young people, faith and vocational discernment” and to link to an online, anonymous survey asking young people about their lives and expectations.

The answers to the questionnaire, along with contributions from bishops, bishops’ conferences and other church bodies, “will provide the basis for the drafting of the ‘instrumentum laboris,’” or working document for the assembly, synod officials said in January.

Young people from all backgrounds are encouraged to take part in the questionnaire because every young person has “the right to be accompanied without exclusion,” synod officials had said. The list of 53 mostly multiple-choice questions is divided into seven sections: general personal information; attitudes and opinions about oneself and the world; influences and relationships; life choices; religion, faith and the church; inter-net use; and two final, open-ended questions. The write-in questions are an invitation to describe a positive example of how the Catholic Church can “accompany young people in their choices, which give value and fulfillment in life” and to say something about oneself that hasn’t been asked in the questionnaire.

Other questions ask about living arrangements; self-image; best age to leave home and have a family; opin-ions about education and work; measures of success; sources of positive influence; level of confidence in public and private institutions; and political or social activism.

The section on faith looks at the importance of religion in one’s life and asks, “Who Jesus is for you?” That question provides 16 choices to choose from, including “the savior,” “an adversary to be fought,” “an inven-tion” and “someone who loves me.” It also asks which topics — promoting peace, defending human life, evan-gelization, defending truth, the environment — are the most urgent for the church to address.

The Vatican’s preparation for a synod generally includes developing a questionnaire and soliciting input from bishops’ conferences, dioceses and religious orders. This is the first time the Vatican’s synod organizing body put a questionnaire online and sought direct input from the public.

A synod’s preparatory phase seeks to consult of “the entire people of God” to better understand young peo-ple’s different situations as synod officials draft the working document. The synod on youth will be looking for ways the church can best and most effectively evangelize young people and help them make life choices corresponding to God’s plan and the good of the person.

HEART & SOUL MINISTRYJuly 1ST and 2ND is the Heart & Soul Ministry food collection for Immaculate Heart parish. Now that it is summertime, some of our sister parish families are at greater risk of food insecurity because children are home from school. Parents have increased responsibility for providing three nourishing meals and snacks every day. Perhaps you can pick up a few extra items as you shop for your Fourth of July celebration. Canned foods, especially meats, vegetables and fruit, along with pastas and sauce, rice, cereal, peanut butter and jelly help make complete meals for working families who need a little extra help. Personal care, household cleaning products and paper products also make a big difference. Expired food items and donations of clothing, shoes, toys, electronics and housewares are not accepted. Such items are thrown in the trash and not passed along to Immaculate Heart Parish. Neither Santa Clara de Asis nor Immaculate Heart parishes have the space or volunteers required to properly process and distribute such donations. Thank you for your generosity.
