Dear Friends:

Over the next four days there will be tons of burgers grilled (including a few thousand pounds of the ‘turkey’ and ‘vegan-vegetable’ varieties) hundreds of thousands of tons of ice poured into ice chests, countless cans of soda and ‘stronger’ beverages purchased and nestled in the aforementioned ice, fields-worth of potatoes made into salad or grilled with onions and peppers or just wrapped in foil and nestled in glowing briquettes...all this as we celebrate our 241st Birthday in the best way possible, by coming together. Certainly there will be a sizeable group of people who will hunker down and stay at home but a vast quantity of the USA will be gathering on cul-de-sacs, blocking off the streets, breaking out the lawn chairs in the front yard, going down to the park, beach or desert. Lots of food will be consumed, lots of music will be enjoyed/endured, the night skies will usher in citizen-driven light shows of varying spectacle....and when it is all over, everybody will pack everything back up and return to work on Wednesday, none-the-worse for wear except for some sunburns and pounds gained from overeating. Here’s to hoping your holiday will be safe, sane, delicious and evocative of all the 4ths you have celebrated before.

Funny how long-ago things can sometimes re-emerge to bring unexpected smiles. For example, my connection with our Orange County Vietnamese community predates my interactions with Fr. Nicolaus by many decades. In the late ‘80’s and early ‘90’s I was at St. John the Baptist in Costa Mesa, a community that had a substantial number of the newly resettled/immigrated Vietnamese families within our parish borders. In those days the Vietnamese were completely new to me...probably just as we Anglos and Hispanics were new to them. One of the families had some sons who became Altar Servers and one of them, John Pham, apparently thought I was pretty cool...cool enough that he and his brother happily posed for some sort of celebratory picture with me. After being in Costa Mesa for five years I moved on and the Pham brothers became part of my past...until about four or five years ago when out of the blue John Pham made renewed contact with me...offering that celebratory picture of me and them as proof of our affiliation. A lot can happen in 25 years and John had not only gotten his law degree and traveled the world but wanted to reconnect and we began periodic dinners and get-togethers between me, him and his future fiancée ...who this weekend became his wife at Holy Spirit Church in Fountain Valley at a wedding at which they had requested, almost two years ago that I would con-celebrate. Funny the seeds that are planted and can grow and flower decades later. Congratulations John and Susana...may you have many blessed decades of joy and excitement.

I am still hopeful that one of our generous ‘patrons’ will emerge to help cover the cost of the remaining flat-screen TV to be installed in the last of our meeting rooms. Identical to the flat-screens generously donated last year for the other Meeting and Conference Rooms, the final flat-screen costs $1500, inclusive of the additional hardware to make them accessible for Apple computer usage. Knowing that these televisions will assist both our weekly Child Care and our Junior/Senior High School Youth Ministries, I am hoping that an additional generous patron will step forward to assist with the purchase of the second flat-screen? If you are interested, please make contact with FKB, at 714-970-2149 or via email at [email protected]. Thanks for your consideration.

Our CELEBRATION of Summer, this year’s SummerFest, was delicious, smooth-running and by all appearanc-es, well received by the hundreds of folks who grazed their way through the edible/drinkable offerings. My ap-preciation to those KofC men who responded to our call to help set up AND take down all the tables, chairs and individual booths. It all went up pretty easily and by 4pm Sunday was all gone, except for a very full dumpster. Gisela Mobraten and her team of helpers made hosting a full weekend’s worth of food and festivity look easy and somehow she found time to bring her kids AND peacefully attend 12noon Mass as well. Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish was here as a way to celebrate our growing relationship and their food, just like all our other booths, was made with love from scratch and oh so delicious. (An interesting side note, one of the IHM volunteers com-mented that 11 years ago he had been part of the construction company that poured the concrete for our Hall! Small world!!!!) Steve Rice and his beverage team kept everyone well watered/margarita’d/wined/beer’d/soda’d and refreshed; the Muffin Man-aka Tim Moran - provided limitless blueberry-packed muffins; Emily Bent and Mary Chavez kept the Faith Formation dessert booth and face-painting lively; the Cotton Candy machine kept whirling; the Scouts Sausage & Pepper sandwiches were a huge hit as was the fresh corn-on-the-cob, chili, bacon and soft-shell taco booths; Ammunition Winery added a vintner taste to our offerings; the Filipino Community had an ENTIRE village of helpers to cook/serve their fabulous fare and the hot dogs from the KofC kept rolling off the grill; Marc Jordan kept the fuses from blowing and did hours and hours of behind the scenes set-up while Jason Mobraten as DJ insured that SummerFest was rock’n. To all who celebrated, to all who made the event a success, THANK YOU!!!!

Have a wonderful FOURTH of July, chat with you again next week and please remember that you are loved. FKB

By now, those escaping for a multi-day Independence Weekend holiday have fled the Canyon; the highways leading to Newport and Huntington are crammed and the Honda inflatable eagle is just as prominent as always. For those of us lingering ‘at home’, we benefit from a whole lot of wisdom and insight into the benefits of associating with Jesus as his disciples. Having a variety of different law enforcement professionals as parishioners, I always take comfort by their presence at different Masses for the simple knowledge that they will bring their professional skills to bear if a need arises. In the same way, having medical professionals attending Mass provides an extra measure of safety for those who might experience a medical emergency, having some professional on-site care is highly comforting while waiting for the ambulance. Along this vein of thought this weekend we are reminded by Jesus of the BONUSES of associating with him: *Whoever loses their life, for my sake, will find it. *Whoever receives me, receives the one who sent me. *Whoever receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward. *Whoever gives a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink, will surely not lose their reward. While some look at a relationship with God only as the gateway to heaven at the end of physical life, there are tangible benefits in the here and now...first and foremost being able to avail of the wisdom, guidance and insight offered by the Holy Spirit for use within our daily lives. Not trying to be a Debbie-downer when it comes to vacations, still, when one is in close relationship with Jesus, our refreshment, renewal and depth of adventure can be right close to home and not requiring long drives or expensive investments. Good relationships are wonderful to fathom and there is none deeper than a relationship with Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

The sights, smells and flavors of SummerFest have been wafted away by the afternoon breezes and July opens before us. Thank you for coming and sharing this Summer weekend with our Santa Clara Community. This weekend we are accepting the UNIVERSAL CHURCH Collection, a combination of what used to be the individual Peter’s Pence and Catholic Relief Services collection. Thank you for your consideration and generosity. The Bulletin awaits you with news of assorted other parish happenings. As you celebrate the USofA these days, play safe, enjoy the food and don’t forget to continue to ask God to help us follow the blessings he continues to shower on our country and whether by the dawn’s early light or the rockets red glare, please remember that you are loved.
