MASS AND YOUTH MINISTRY

The foundation to a transformative youth ministry is the Sunday Mass. Jesus Christ transforms lives, and the Holy Mass brings us face-to-face with Him in an intimate way through the Eucharist.

The Mass and the Eucharist are the center of Life Teen ministry. We are committed to helping parishes develop dynamic youth-focused Masses. This resource is part of that commitment. This book contains a guide for each Sunday from the 1st Sunday of Advent to the 5th Sunday of Lent (November 29th, 2015 to March 13th, 2016).

The Sunday liturgy deserves our best efforts, especially toward the involvement of teenagers. The Life Teen Liturgy Planning Guide is written to help priests, musicians, youth ministers, and anyone else involved in planning liturgical celebrations at your parish be mindful of the ways the liturgy can involve and directly speak to teenagers.

The Liturgy Planning Guide equips parishes to minister to teenagers in a unique way through the liturgy by providing resources in two key areas:

HomilyEach Sunday contains Key Words and Themes from the readings, as well as Homily Suggestions for Teenagers. These two sections are designed to help priests and deacons create homilies that speak to the heart of teenagers and are geared directly toward them. A team of incredible priests who are passionate about serving youth wrote every homily suggestion in this guide by drawing on years of practical youth ministry and preaching experience.

MusicMusic is essential; it can help draw teenagers into a powerful experience of authentic worship. Good liturgical music (simple, sing-able, and scriptural) should be chosen. It is important that the music be enriched with

instruments, sparked with life and involve the community, not just the musicians. To help select music that will draw teenagers into liturgy, every Sunday contains a list of Song Selections that musicians may choose from to help draw teenagers into worship during Mass. Every selection contains a citation or licensing number to help musicians find the correct music for each song.

A WELCOME COMMUNITY

Teens must know from the moment they walk into Mass that they are welcome and that they are a part of the Body of Christ. They are greeted, embraced and encouraged. There are several ways to help make your parish community more welcoming and engaging to teenagers as they attend Sunday liturgy:

Hospitality Goes a Long Way Take time before Mass for people to greet each other. Create a spirit of hospitality. Welcome visitors. Make certain that new members of your parish know where to find bathrooms, song sheets, etc.

Involve the Teens in Liturgical Ministries Involvement is the key to the teens taking ownership of the liturgy. Provide opportunities for teens to serve as greeters, lectors, ushers, gift bearers and Eucharistic ministers. Give them clear directions, have them practice their ministries, and help them handle their mistakes calmly.

Talk to the Teens In the homily, speak about morality, relationships, families, dating, etc. It’s wrong for us not to speak about these facets of daily life because teens talk about them often. Teens don’t like to be preached at. Nobody does. It is never effective to come across sounding condescending. Speaking directly to the teens is an effective way to let young people know they are important and valued. While the entire homily does not have to be directed to the teens, it is vital that the homilist acknowledges their presence.

Don’t ever Water Down the Gospel Teachings The way to “reach” the teens is not to say what you think they want to hear. Most teens have not been taught the teachings of the Church. They want to know what the Church stands for and what it is exactly that they belong to. We must talk honestly about doctrine, moral issues and prayer.

The Liturgy of the Church is Rich Don’t mess with the ritual. You do a disservice to the community by breaking the unity of the universal experience of the order and flow of the liturgy. Work at helping teens understand the central elements of liturgy. Try to do what you do with excellence, style and grace. Bring out the real elements of the liturgy and place emphasis where it belongs - on the community, the Word, and most essentially, the Eucharist.

We encourage you to share the Liturgy Planning Guide with your youth minister, music ministers and priests of the parish. While all the suggestions and ideas contained within this book may not work for your parish, we pray that it is helpful in engaging young people (and the entire parish) in the celebration of the Holy Mass. May God bless you in your ministry of leading teens closer to Christ!

FIRST READING:Jeremiah 33:14-16

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:Psalm 25: 4-5, 8-9, 10, 14R: To you, O Lord, I lift my soul.

SECOND READING:1 Thessalonians 3:12-4:2

GOSPEL:Luke 21: 25-28, 34-36

LPG

KEY WORDS:Preparation, Fulfillment, Justice, Readiness, Penitence, Blamelessness

KEY THEMES:

1. Advent is about preparation and becoming present “again” to the God who is eternally present to us.

2. Our conduct matters; what we do and don’t do matters (as evidenced in the Confiteor).

3. We ought to strive to love God evermore, but it must not stop there, for in loving our neighbors, we love God, too.

1ST SUNDAY OF ADVENTNovember 29, 2015

HOMILY SUGGESTIONS FOR TEENS • Have you ever received a message online with a warning

that says, “Virus Alert!”? Immediate panic sets in. How am I going to get rid of it without the virus getting into my computer system? Delete! Delete! Delete!

• The Gospel today is posting a virus alert as well. Be watchful! Be Alert! You do not know when the Lord is coming! Do not let the virus of sin get into your system! Delete! Delete! Delete!

• Thank goodness the Lord has given the Church software that can serve as our spiritual virus scanner, alerting us to files that may be harmful to our spiritual systems. So what are some of the features of our spiritual virus scanner?

• First of all, our spiritual virus scanner contains programming for the season of Advent. This is the season when we seek to turn away from the virus of sin so to prepare for the coming of Christ, when all the files of our life are opened before the Lord. Advent is our wake up call to jolt us out of our programmed ruts and routines that lead us to sin.

• Secondly, our spiritual virus scanner contains programming for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Reconciliation provides the opportunity to reflect upon the areas of our lives that are in need of cleansing and God’s forgiveness. Only the Lord, in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, can clean our souls of any virus of sin and restore us to the fullness of grace.

• Take the time this Advent season to install the spiritual virus scanner into the programming of your life, lest your system be infected with the virus of sin. Sin is always harmful and damaging to your life. Delete! Delete! Delete!

KEY WORDS:Glory, Repentance, Focus, Joy, Trust, Response

KEY THEMES:

1. God isn’t about surprises. Our joy comes not from His working unexpectedly but, rather, from His fidelity – from how He constantly fulfills His promises, doing what He said He would do.

2. Behold His glory; Heaven and earth are filled with His glory!

3. True holiness is a journey not a one-time event, it’s a season – like Advent.

4. God is justice and in justice, the dignity, love and worth of all is seen more clearly.

HOMILY SUGGESTIONS FOR TEENS • In the Gospel, John the Baptist invites us to travel the

super highway of the Lord. On the highway of the Lord, every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be made low. The winding roads shall be made straight, and the rough roads shall be made smooth. In other words, the Lord’s way to us, and our way to the Lord, is a straight shot. There are no roadblocks, curves, or detours. Talk about a great GPS route!

• But then, why do we get lost so often? Because we think we know a way that is faster and shorter, so we take it, and it turns out to be longer and slower. We have the spiritual GPS directions, but we ignore them and choose our way.

• When travelling through life, to get to the land of salvation, John the Baptist instructs us to follow this simple direction - stay focused on your final destination. Don’t get distracted by the multiple exits along the way. Don’t take any shortcuts. Follow the GPS directions, which have been prepared for you by Jesus Christ, who is “the way, the truth, and the life.”

KEY WORDS:Rejoice, Justice, Honesty, Might, Excessive, Praise

KEY THEMES:

1. We should rejoice…the God of the universe is so close to us, so present to us that He actually humbles Himself to be within us (and within those around us).

2. You cannot have true love without justice. Justice flows from a loving heart.

3. Joy is essential to the Christian life.4. Doing the “right thing” is always the right

thing.

3RD SUNDAY OF ADVENTDecember 13, 2015

HOMILY SUGGESTIONS FOR TEENS • They couldn’t make up their minds! Was John the

Baptist the Messiah or was Jesus the Messiah? People were casting their votes along party lines, and the race for the title of “messiah” was close. Then, in the midst of all of the confusion, John the Baptist steps forward to give his concession speech!

• John the Baptist addresses his followers and says, “I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming. I am not even worthy to loosen the straps on his sandals.”

• In the Middle East, when a guest arrived at a home, the head of the household would offer to take off the guest’s sandals and wash their feet. Not only was the untying of the straps of the sandals a gesture of hospitality, but it was also a sign of humbleness and homage. One had to bow or kneel before the guest to undo the straps of the sandals.

• When John says that he is unworthy to untie the straps of the sandals of Jesus, John is saying that he is not the Messiah before whom they should bow and kneel.

• It might be hard for us to imagine such humility. How often we live our lives like we are the Messiah! Most of us live our lives walking around extending our feet so that others can have the honor of untying the straps of our sandals.

• Maybe on this Third Sunday of Advent, it is time for us to write our own concession speech. Today, let us stand before one another and honestly concede that I am not the Messiah. That there is one who has come and one who is coming that is greater than I am. In fact, I am not even worthy to untie the straps of His sandals.

KEY WORDS:Humility, Blessedness, Authenticity, Urgency, Obedience, Providence

KEY THEMES:

1. God is love and love is always on a mission. God has a plan, always.

2. “Blessed” in God’s eyes does not mean the same as blessed in the eyes of the world; it’s normally the opposite.

3. The more humble the heart, the more clear the vision. Proper perspective comes from trusting who God is and knowing who we are not.

HOMILY SUGGESTIONS FOR TEENS • In a large city during Advent, a little boy wandered

through the streets gazing at the busy people rushing back and forth. Everyone seemed to have a destination, except the little boy.

• At the end of the street, sat a small house with no curtains. It was easy to see inside. On a table sat a small Christmas tree with no lights. Near a fireplace, a mother read to her two small children. “Mommy,” said the little girl, “someone is ringing the doorbell.” Jumping up they ran to the door to see who it was. Opening the door, they saw the little boy.

• For nearly an hour, the four of them sat around the fireplace. When their guest seemed to be warmed, the little girl shouted, “finish the story, mommy!” Agreeing, the mother opened the book and was just about to speak when, all of a sudden, a powerful light began to fill the room. The small family turned to see the boy transformed into light. Then, the family watched as the light ascended until all that was visible was a beautiful, radiant star that shone brightly over their home.

• Jesus comes to us during the Advent Season looking for a home, a heart in which to dwell. Advent is a time when we open our eyes and our hearts so that we will recognize the Christmas Christ when He comes to visit.

• Perhaps you will recognize Christ in the excited face of a child anticipating Christmas? Maybe you will see Christ in the face of your spouse, a friend, a co-worker or the Salvation Army bell ringer? Maybe you will feel the love of Christ in the words of a Christmas card or the thought behind a gift?

• Remember, every Advent season, God sends His Son to wander the streets looking for a place to be warmed. You’ll know when you recognize Jesus in your midst. There will be a tremendous lightness of heart. You will feel a surge of joy and contentment. A brilliant star of light will come to rest upon your face.

KEY THEMES:

1. In God we are granted true (and proper) perspective. All gifts (including children) come from God so we need offer our families back to Him.

2. Our vocations flow from God and bear fruit when tied to Him, our life source.

3. A holy family is not the same as a “perfect” family. Our families are called to be holy, consecrated to our Lord and Savior; we are called to be holy as He is holy.

4. If you’re looking for Jesus, seek Him in His Father’s House, daily.

HOMILY SUGGESTIONS FOR TEENS • Jesus was 12 years old, one year shy of being a teenager,

when He was about His Father’s business in His Father’s house. Teens don’t need to wait until adulthood to be leaders in the Church. Teens aren’t merely the future of the Church; they are the present of the Church.

• The People of God are referred to as “children of God” repeatedly throughout the Scriptures. Teens are at a privileged time of their life because they can claim the graces of being beloved sons and daughters of God, by way of their zeal, docility, and complete dependence on the Father.

• On the Feast of the Holy Family, you may want to use the homily to lead the teens through a guided meditation on the Nativity according to the method of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Ask them to envision themselves walking into the stable, and then to imagine what they see, hear, smell, feel, even taste. Instruct them to imagine Mary handing them the Christ child, while she sleeps after an exhausting day.

KEY WORDS:Abundance, Stewardship, Worship, Prophecy, Mystery, Manifestation

KEY THEMES:

1. Sometimes God calls us to walk, to search for Him with our bodies and, indeed, with our whole heart. In seeking God we constantly come to realize that He is seeking us.

2. Adoration and worship culminate and find their place at the manger (altar/chapel)

3. Stewardship is an invitation to offer oneself back to (the body of) Christ…as Christ does for us through His physical presence.

4. All are invited to encounter God and receive His grace.

EPIPHANY SUNDAYJanuary 3, 2016

HOMILY SUGGESTIONS FOR TEENS • “Go and search diligently for the child.” The encounter

with Jesus Christ is never-ending. It is a daily occurrence. To search diligently means to look for carefully, inspecting every nook and cranny. Search diligently for Jesus in every aspect of your life. How is He present in your family, your friendships, your school, your work, your worries, joys, and fears?

• Each of the three kings had a gift to bring to the Lord, and each gift was unique: gold, frankincense and myrrh. All of us, by way of our Baptism, are “kings.” Also, every teen has a unique gift no one else possesses that can be placed at the service of Christ and His Church.

• After meeting Christ, the three kings “departed for their country by another way.” No one ever encounters Jesus and leaves as they came. He always changes us. Have you truly encountered Christ in your life? If not, do not fear. You will encounter Him if you open the stable of your heart and invite Him to take up residence there. Do so, and you will be changed forever.

4443 LITURGY PLANNING GUIDE

HOMILY SUGGESTIONS FOR TEENS • Jesus had no sin that needed to be forgiven. He did

not need to be baptized. So, why was He? In Jesus of Nazareth, Pope Benedict XVI states that Jesus is baptized because He desires “solidarity with men… he blends into the gray mass of sinners waiting on the banks of the Jordan.” One of the best images we can have of ourselves is that of a loved sinner. Do you see yourself loved completely by God, despite your sins?

• Continuing this same thought, God the Father calls Jesus, “my Beloved Son.” Through our Baptism, we are made partakers in Christ’s Death, and Resurrection, and thus are likewise called God’s beloved sons and daughters (Ephesians 1:5). Let your prayer this week be, “Father, help me believe that I am your adopted son or daughter.”

• Through Baptism (and Confession) our guilt is expiated, wiped away (Isaiah 40:2). Sometimes, however, we still carry lingering feelings of shame. There is a difference between guilt and shame. Guilt occurs when you’ve sinned, and you have to pay something back. Shame occurs when you regret past sins. Don’t confuse feelings of shame with thinking you’re still guilty of sins that have been wiped away by the Sacraments of Baptism or Confession. You’re not guilty anymore. Jesus has paid back the debt. It’s ok to feel shame about past sins that have been forgiven and to use that shame to avoid them in the future. However, you are not guilty of those sins.

KEY THEMES:

1. Baptism opens up a new spiritual life, where we go from mere creation to true children.

2. God levels mountains – He eliminates any and every obstacle that might keep us from knowing Him intimately.

3. True wealth comes from knowing, loving and serving a God reveals Himself (and Who comes to us) as Father.

4. Christ, our older and perfect brother, offers us an example that we must follow…it’s rooted in humility.

5049 LITURGY PLANNING GUIDE

HOMILY SUGGESTIONS FOR TEENS • Notice who the privileged guests at the wedding are:

Jesus, Mary, and His disciples. Make sure they too are the privileged guests in your marriage and in all your relationships. Jesus is the provider of every need. Mary is the constant intercessor. The disciples, who symbolize the Church, are the Body of Christ, in which we are living members.

• “You have kept the good wine until now.” Every marriage and relationship goes through a honeymoon period or “good wine,” which comes first. Likewise, many marriages and friendships experience a disillusionment phase or “inferior wine,” when the spark of the new relationship wears out. However, fruitful marriages and friendships, rooted in the Lord, eventually move out of disillusionment, into a phase of mature love. The “good wine” improves with age.

• All marriages participate in the one, true marriage between Christ and His Church. God wishes to wed Himself to you. “Your builder shall marry you.” Choose a future spouse with this as the primary criteria. Will marriage to this person lead me to marriage with God or not?

SECOND READING:1 Corinthians 12:12-30 or 12:12-14, 27

KEY WORDS:Purpose, Fidelity, Connectedness, Body, Scripture, Discernment

KEY THEMES:

1. Unless we know the Creator, we’ll never properly discern the purpose for which we were created.

2. The Word of God is, first, a Person – the Person of Jesus Christ – not just the Book. The purpose of the word is to introduce us more intimately to the Word.

3. The Body of Christ (the Church) is most perfectly united when in communion with the Body of Christ (Eucharist).

3RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEJanuary 24, 2016

HOMILY SUGGESTIONS FOR TEENS • Since today’s Gospel begins with the beginning of

the Gospel of Luke, today is an excellent day to begin praying through the entire Gospel of Luke in a daily lectio divina. Pray your way through the Gospel, from beginning to end, for five to ten minutes every day. Encourage teens to share the fruit of your prayer with the hashtag #lectioluke.

• Today’s second reading reminds us of the 11th Commandment: Thou Shalt Not Compare. You are a unique and indispensable member of the Body of Christ. You and your God-given charisms cannot be replaced. Don’t try to be the next St. Francis. Be the first and only St. You.

• The first reading and the Gospel focus on the Word of God. Not only listening to it and reading it, but also proclaiming it. This would be an excellent weekend to invite teens to proclaim the Word of God as lectors.

KEY THEMES:

1. The world might not comprehend or appreciate when you use your spiritual gifts – use them anyway. The world cannot provide what heaven gives.

2. If the person you’re speaking to does not know and believe that you love them, the words you speak – no matter how eloquent or logical – don’t matter.

3. Never allow rejection to inhibit your love or your proclamation of truth.

4. Speaking (or preaching) truth won’t make you friends but, rather, reveals who your (and His) true friends are.

HOMILY SUGGESTIONS FOR TEENS • Jesus says it Himself, “No prophet is accepted in his

own native place.” Being a witness of the Gospel and a disciple of Jesus is difficult in any situation, but perhaps most difficult in your own families and with your closest friends. Notice Jesus preaches the Gospel in His hometown none-the-less. You may be the only version of Jesus your family and friends ever see.

• Ready to have your mind blown? Before the creation of the universe, and ever since then, and for all eternity, every moment of your life has been, is now, and ever shall be on the mind of God. “Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you.” God is utterly fascinated with you.

• It seems like we hear today’s second reading at nearly every wedding we attend. That’s OK. It’s a great reading. Make plans to pick the readings for your wedding with your future spouse the way you pick the song for your first dance. It will probably be a song that has deep meaning for the two of you. You will think of your wedding day every time you hear it. Imagine sitting next to your future spouse at Mass fifty years from now and “your Gospel” comes one.

KEY WORDS:Readiness, Apostleship, Grace, Encounter, Vocation, Calling

KEY THEMES:

1. The question is not whether or not God will call you, the question is whether or not you are ready to follow.

2. Once you encounter the love and mercy of God, there’s no place on earth you’d rather be than in His company…and service.

3. God doesn’t call us based upon our résumé but, rather, upon our potential.

5TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIMEFebruary 7, 2016

HOMILY SUGGESTIONS FOR TEENS • Sometimes the closer we get to Jesus and the more

we see of His power and glory, the more we want to depart from Him like Peter because we too recognize our flaws. It makes sense. It’s like driving a car at night. When the headlights of a car in the oncoming lane hit our windshield, we see every scratch and every bug. However, heading toward the light is better than heading into darkness.

• Let Jesus decide your worthiness instead of you. When Peter wants to depart from Jesus, the Lord says, “Whatever. Get up and be Pope.” When Isaiah says, “Woe is me… I am a man of unclean lips” the angel says, “We can take care of that with this ember here.” God doesn’t call the qualified; He qualifies the called.

• “They signaled to their partners in the other boat to come help them.” When you “lower your nets into deep water;” when you are willing to go beyond a shallow relationship with Jesus Christ, you will be so overwhelmed, you won’t be able to help but share the experience with others.

7271 LITURGY PLANNING GUIDE

FIRST READING:Deuteronomy 26:4-10

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:Psalm 91:1-2, 10-11, 12-13, 14-15R: Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble.

SECOND READING:Romans 10:8-13

GOSPEL:Luke 4:1-13

LPG

KEY WORDS:Fidelity, Power, Faithfulness, Surrender, Hunger, Desertion

KEY THEMES:

1. It is through fidelity in the face of temptation that our true identity is revealed.

2. God doesn’t lead us into the desert for our destruction, the desert is where we find right order, and allow our spirit to lead our flesh (once again).

3. The devil and God are not equals. The devil is an angel, far lower than Christ.

4. God is faithful, He will not allow us to be tempted beyond what we can handle (1 Cor. 10:13).

1ST SUNDAY OF LENTFebruary 14, 2016

HOMILY SUGGESTIONS FOR TEENS • Satan attacks the weak spot. He is like an enemy who

circles the castle wall, looking for the weakest spot, and then directs his attack there. Satan waits for Jesus to build up forty days of hunger and then tempts Him with food.

• What is your weakest spot? Is it pride, selfishness, vanity? Strengthen your weak spot this Lent. That is where Satan is going to attack.

• This Lent, God wants to bring you “out of Egypt.” What are you enslaved by? Bring it to the Lord in prayer. In the first reading, a basket is presented by the people to the priest as a gift at the altar of the Lord. This Lent, offer that which enslaves you as a gift to the Lord. Imagine it being brought forward at the offertory, with the bread and wine, to be placed on the altar as a “sacrifice acceptable to God the Almighty Father.”

• St. Paul says in Romans, “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart.” Go ahead and fast from something this Lent. But make sure you feast as well. Be sure to consume the Word daily.

KEY WORDS:Perspective, Glorification, Revelation, Heroism, Subjection, Victory

KEY THEMES:

1. God doesn’t see as we see, doesn’t think as we think…thank God.

2. The glory of God is rarely (if ever) revealed in ways we would conceive or expect – an important reminder before we contemplate the Eucharist.

3. The glories we have beheld pale in comparison to the glory which awaits us!

4. The glory of God is revealed to those with eyes to see (humility).

7877 LITURGY PLANNING GUIDE

HOMILY SUGGESTIONS FOR TEENS • Jesus “took” Peter, John, and James up the mountain

to pray. This grueling journey resulted in a life changing experience for the three Apostles. They witnessed the power of the Transfiguration.

• The word used in Greek for “took” is more drastic than it sounds in English. Jesus came along side of them and used force!

• It may be worthwhile to include a story of a particular time when someone needed lots of persuasion to do something (go on a retreat), which eventually resulted in a positive life-changing experience. How often do we need to be persuaded, pushed, or prodded to do what Jesus Christ wants us to do?

• Jesus is always trying to take us up a spiritual mountain to show us more about his divinity, life with the saints, and the reality of heavenly glory as we see in the Transfiguration.

• Right now each young person is experiencing some sort of resistance to Jesus Christ. It could be attending weekly mass, living chastely, choosing to live for others rather than for oneself, or spending time in prayer each day. Pay attention to the resistance.

• If the Apostles had never allowed Jesus take them up that mountain, we would not be here today with the freedom, salvation, and the revelation of divine love. Let Jesus take you somewhere. It will require effort, trust, sacrifice, and a deep relationship with Jesus to climb that spiritual mountain, but the benefits are out of this world.

KEY WORDS:Identity, Forewarning, Fruitfulness, Revelation, Expectation, Response

KEY THEMES:

1. We reveal we belong to Him by allowing His Spirit to live and work in us; we reveal we are His by our fruit.

2. In offering us His Name, God invites us to new levels of intimacy and relationship. The root word for “religion” means relationship.

3. When we get prideful or cocky…we are having an identity crisis. Without God, we are but dust.

3RD SUNDAY OF LENTFebruary 28, 2016

HOMILY SUGGESTIONS FOR TEENS • It is Lent and we all need to slow down. In the spiritual

life, there is no quick fix, no easy answer, and no fast track to holiness. Maybe we are moving way too fast to have real, deep encounters with the power of the Most High God. Moses had to stop, listen, obey, take his sandals off, and approach God with awe and wonder. Only then could he encounter God and have such a deep conversation.

• In Jesus’ parable, the gardener begged for three more years so he could fertilize the useless fig tree. Becoming fruitful and useful to the Lord Jesus is a slow process.

• The good news is that there is always time for conversion and change. We cannot put it off until tomorrow; we must start today. It is never too late for someone to start the slow process of building virtues and getting to know Jesus Christ. Nobody is useless and fruitless unless they choose to be so.

• Every teen needs to slow down; slow down driving, slow down speaking, slow down texting, slow down praying. Imagine the fruitfulness and usefulness of slowing down and spending three years being nurtured by the Eucharist.

KEY WORDS:Providence, Reconciliation, Love, Prodigiousness, Gift, Inheritance

KEY THEMES:

1. Reconciliation is intimate and demonstrates the utmost humility, His and ours.

2. Love is not abstract, love is tangible – it is experienced, sought, offered, tasted and seen.

3. Our inheritance supersedes earthly treasures…it’s salvation through grace – a free gift yet beyond measure.

4. Resentment holds us back from the true feast; even (reconciled) sinners are welcome at the Father’s table.

HOMILY SUGGESTIONS FOR TEENS • Beware of boredom! After a youth in Florida went

around starting small fires, he eventually started a big fire and got arrested. The police asked him why he did it. He said he was bored.

• While Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI was reflecting on the story of the Prodigal Son with a group of youth, he mentioned that the younger son most likely found life boring. The son started to think only about himself. This is where trouble began.

• We must do something better with our boredom than rebel and become reckless. A deep spiritual life, good friends, and clean living are not boring at all. Maybe they seem less exciting than sin, but the risk of trading one’s soul for a little more excitement is too great.

• Life with God the Father is more exciting than life in the world. Just look at the homecoming the repentant son received! When he returned, he received the kiss, the ring, the robe, the sandals, the title of being a beloved son, and a party with a slaughtered fattened calf, complete with music and dancing.

• The Sacrament of Penance is a return to the Father. In the return to the Father, we can once again be saints.

• It might be worthwhile to briefly highlight the life of a saint who found that holiness was not boring.

HOMILY SUGGESTIONS FOR TEENS • After Jesus had disarmed the group of Scribes and

Pharisees who wanted to stone the woman caught in adultery, she found herself alone with Jesus. St. Augustine said, “Relicti sunt misera et misericordia.” Misery meets mercy. This is exactly what happens when we are alone with Jesus.

• Every person has some experience of misery. The Scribes and Pharisees decided to take out their miseries by killing someone else. This is the same thing as bullying today. It is often noted that those who bully others, do so because they are jealous, angry, and prideful.

• Rather than bully or hurt others, we must take our miseries to Jesus and let him heal us. Nobody deserves to be the brunt of our anger. We must make sure that misery meets mercy.

• Jesus can handle our miseries. We must bring them to Mass, bring them to the Sacrament of Confession, and bring them to prayer. Remember that it is a Year of Mercy. We can trade misery for mercy. We can trade sorrow for joy. We can trade all the unhealthy ways we deal with life’s miseries for the new life St. Paul preaches. Think of what would happen at your school or workplace if everyone took their miseries to Jesus.

FIRST READING:Isaiah 43:16-21

RESPONSORIAL PSALM:Psalm 126:1-2, 2-3, 4-5, 6R. The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy.

SECOND READING:Philippians 3:8-14

GOSPEL:John 8:1-11

LPG

KEY WORDS:Mercy, Worship, Freedom, Forgiveness, Pursuit, Poverty (of Spirit)

KEY THEMES:

1. Condemnation is earthly; mercy is heavenly.2. God forgives and forgets but the devil wants

you to remember your failures – the guilt and the shame keep you from forward motion. God bids you to remember His unyielding mercy and His unconditional love.

3. Mercy presupposes our desire for it. Mercy is offered before we even ask. Once you taste Mercy, after truly yearning for it, you cannot and will not be the same.
