All Welcome

Dear Friends

Today we celebrate the World Day of the Poor. Last year Pope Francis began this Day as a reminder of the special place which ‘the poor’ have in God’s heart and therefore in our hearts. We see in the Jewish scriptures that the Lord cares especially for the widow, the stranger and the orphan. We see too in the Gospels how Jesus moves out towards the poor and that his mission is ‘to bring Good News to the poor’.

In his letter for this day, Pope Francis reflects on the verse: “This poor man cried and the Lord heard him” Ps 34:6. First, the Lord listens to those who call out and seek refuge in him, whose hearts are broken by sadness, loneliness and exclu-sion. There is a sense of trust in a Father who truly cares. We need silence in our hearts if we are to hear the cry of the poor.

Second God responds to their cry. The Israelites were wandering in the desert and were hungry, and God gave them ‘bread from heaven’. God’s answer to their cry is a saving act which heals the body and soul. We too as church can re-spond with healing. Third God acts to ‘free’ those burdened with poverty and seeks to restore their dignity. We too can recognise the dignity of each poor person and help their liberation.

We will have a leaving collection today for Vinnies as a sign of our concern for the poor. But more importantly we might encounter a person who is poor and find some way of healing and restoring their dignity. God bless, Fr John Herd

CWL The Catholic Women's League invites members, husbands, friends and helpers to their Christmas Luncheon on Tues .Dec 4th at the Bridge Hotel, Langhorne Creek, 12 noon. World Day of the Poor

This Sunday, 18 Nov, we will celebrate the second World Day of the Poor. Pope Francis began this day to remind us of the needs of the poor and the special place they have in God’s sight. We will a collection for Vinnies at each Mass.
