Dear Friends:

Writing this in the early hours of the Sunday after our FIRST La Cena (back on July 21st), my black pants are dusted with crusty crumbs from a remaining baguette of delicious ‘C’est si Bon’ bread, which I am enjoying, along with a bracing cup of dark roast coffee as I await the start of the Masses. Unlike Deacon Michael, who returned to Rome this past Wednesday, I have come to enjoy the dark skies and cool air that accompany the 4am or 5am hours. Given his druthers, Michael would have slept to noon on most days while I like to get into the office, bring along the paper, settle down with a cup of ‘Joe’ and a pastry of some sort while starting to respond to assorted messages or even begin writing these letters. Sometimes my use of a phrase will make me curious as to where or how the phrase came to exist and that just occurred when I referred to coffee as a ‘cup of Joe.’ Just a few taps of the keyboard and my suspicions were validated and so, for your own ‘casual knowledge’, in case you are ever on a game show or just want to amaze your friends at your next barbecue, here is the full scoop: ‘Say hello to Josephus Daniels, former secretary of the US Navy and namesake of the proverbial cup of joe. Joe is, of course, short for Joseph. And in American English, “joe” can refer to an average guy, a soldier, or—somewhat strangely—coffee. A popular chain in New York, for instance, is called Joe the Art of Coffee. As it turns out, the use of joe as slang for coffee dates to the World War I era. It was then that Daniels, who started his career as a newspaper publisher in North Carolina, became secretary of the Navy under president Woodrow Wilson. Daniels tried to imbue the navy with a strict morality. He increased the number of chaplains, discouraged prostitution at naval bases, and, most controversially, banned the consumption of alcohol. “As a substitute, stewards increased their purchases of coffee, among other beverages,” writes Lee Craig in the new book, “and Daniels’s name became linked to the daily drink of millions around the world. A cup of coffee became disparagingly known as ‘a cup of Joseph Daniels,’ and as legend has it, this was soon shortened to a ‘cup of Joe.’”

But I digress...while we had 202 at the July La Cena...all is not lost for those of you who saw the BIG tent and the strings of lights out over where our permanent Church will someday (soon, God willing) be built and REGRET not having been able to participate. Saturday, September 15th is our SECOND La Cena, one more opportunity to celebrate the Summer in European village fashion by gathering alfresco for food, beverage, song and conver-sation beneath the Yorba Linda skies. Registration forms are available via the Bulletin back page, on our parish website and on the table beneath the poster within the Church. Even though school will have resumed and most Summer activities will have been retired till next Memorial Weekend, on September 15th YOU can savor some wine, laugh, eat and perhaps even dance your way out of Summer and into Autumn...so please make your reservations promptly.

Another couple of dates you may wish to mark on your calendar will be our 2018 MINISTRY FAIR on the weekend of September 8th and 9th. An opportunity for all our ministries, outreaches and social groups to show-case themselves, it is our annual effort to weave more and more of our community into the inner-workings of Santa Clara. To the casual observer our parish functions pretty well, but those of you who participate with our 12 Noon Mass know it is not uncommon for that Mass to experiences shortages of Eucharistic Ministers and many of us recall Masses where there was just one Lector because somebody forgot or could not honor their commit-ment to read at a particular Mass. Having a larger list of participants allows us to not overly tax our volunteers...and it allows more people to derive a ‘sense of ownership’ for making our liturgies occur smoothly.

Definitively qualifying as part of the OLDER generations, I am continually surprised (and a little dismayed) as the educational CREEP by which the beginning days of school encroach on what used to be the SACRED days of Summer vacation. As most of you parents know, your kid’s preparation for the 2018-2019 academic year now begins long before what used to be the traditional end of Summer, Labor Day weekend. Our own St. Francis students return to class on the 27th with the teachers gearing up and prepping their classrooms a week earlier. Our sons and daughters heading off to University and College either are already at their school of choice or in their final goodbyes to family and friends for their start in the next week or two. What may sometimes go unmentioned in the purchase of school supplies and outfitting of new living space for the older students is the STRESS of transitioning from one level/grade to the next, a new living environment or a different campus from elementary to High or Middle School and the refreshing/challenging/frightening freedom that accompanies living away from home. All this to remind you that our sons and daughters need OUR PRAYERS more than ever in these days. Our school teachers and administrators need OUR PRAYERS more than ever and all the support mechanisms that allow our schools to function, need OUR PRAYERS. So, please, as you go about your August rituals and look for the Perseides meteor showers, keep all those involved in the formation and support of our youth in your GOD CONVERSATIONS...and never forget, you are loved. August 11-12, 2018Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Kings 19:4-8 Ephesians 4:30-5:2 John 6:41-51Dependent on where someone lives, many have their favorite Summer foods, snacks or lazy-day tastes. On the East Coast, a casual stroll amid the beach towns will uncover ample Salt-Water Taffy shops while up in New England assorted Maple products will give a sweet taste to bbq meats, ice cream and baked goods. In like manner, the annual Bumbershoot Festival in Seattle will offer every variation imaginable by the human mind on Salmon while in Colorado they sigh with gustatory contentment with all things peaches and cantaloupes. Spanning the globe, each culture and ethnicity has favorite recipes; the thread being it is all FOOD. In a similar way, regardless of where we dwell, each week we gather to be fed with our distinct FOOD OF FAITH within our EUCHARISTIC celebration, the Mass. Offering us the REAL PRESENCE of JESUS in four distinct ways: #1. The assembly when we gather, #2. The Priest when one of us presides, #3. The Sacred WORD when it is proclaimed and lastly, #4. The consecrated bread and consecrated wine, which has become the BODY and BLOOD of Jesus in the same manner as Jesus offered it to his disciples at the Last Supper. Remembering our mother’s urging to ‘eat good food’ in order to grow strong bones, bodies and clarity of thinking, our EUCHARISTIC FOOD empowers us to become more and more like Jesus. Under the oversight of the ‘Persona Christi-the PRIEST’ we gather ‘AS HIS BODY’ and consume his WORD and his FLESH and BLOOD, so as conform ourselves inwardly and outwardly into living presences of Jesus. Like all food, even our favorite recipes, our Eucharistic Food is intended to be CONSUMED, DIGESTED and transformed into the building blocks by which our flesh and blood grow, heal and develop...along with the energy by which the electrical impulses controlling our thoughts and actions continue unabated. Unlike the cantaloupes of Colorado or the taffy of New England beach towns, our Eucharistic Food also gives us GRACE by which our compassion may be deepened, our forgiveness be more sincere, our insight more thoughtful and our charity more natural. Once again, during these Eucharistic-focused weeks, how has Eucharist strengthened you? How has the nearness of Jesus (literally becoming a part of you) made a difference within your life, decisions and actions?

Summer days and summer nights, thank you for joining with our Santa Clara community as part of your Summer of 2018! Our parish events take a slower pace during these final Summer weeks but please check the Bulletin for more information on upcoming events. Please note the celebration of ‘The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary’ this week, with a Vigil Mass on Tuesday the 14th at 5pm and the usual 8:30 a.m. Mass on Wednesday the 15th. However you choose to spend your Summer hours, please know that you are loved. FKB

Volunteer Opportunity We are in need of additional Sacristans for all the Sunday masses as well as Saturday and weekdays. Sacristans are responsible for having everything ready for Mass, including the vessels, linens, hosts, wine, books etc. and for removing the items, cleaning/purifying them and returning them to their proper locations. Sacristans arrive about 30 minutes before their scheduled mass and remain about 15 minutes after mass. Members of this ministry serve about once a month. If you’re interested in becoming a Sacristan, Terry Eubanks will provide your training. You can reach him at [email protected].

thank you to our parishonersst. vincent de paul backpack drive was a great success!!

Parishioners of Santa Clara de Asis, you have once again overwhelmed us with your support of the annual back to school collection. This week, we delivered 205 backpacks, filled to overflowing, for distribution to the families at Immaculate Heart of Mary parish. Also, 37 backpacks were also donated to Family Support Network in Placentia and children in our local community to give them a head start on the school year.

If you still have a backpack or backpacks, whether they are filled or not, we will be happy to take them as we still have additional supplies to fill them. They can be turned in to the office at any time. Thank you. Your generosity is truly a blessing!
