Since 1957, the Laura Ingalls-Wilder Memorial Society has been busy with the preservation of the Ingalls Wilder sites and the hosting of Laura’s readers who come from all over the world to tour the historial treasures of the “Little Town on the Prairie.”

The railroad depot museum features exhibits on De Smet’s early history, a South Dakota wildlife display and a country print shop. Adjacent to the museum is the school house attended by prairie artist Harvey Dunn.

De Smet was named for Father De Smet, a Jesuit missionary, who spent most of his life among the American Indians. A statue in his honor stands in Washtington Park.
