Little Sisters of the Poor Providing loving care to the neediest elderly in New Jersey since 1879. ST. JOSEPH’S HOME FOR THE ELDERLY Fall 2019 150th Anniversary Celebration The seven Little Sisters who arrived here on September 13, 1868, with no money and speaking no English, were sustained by their trust in God — in the firm belief that they were doing his work. Their courage began a mission which continues to this day. On May 22nd, St. Joseph’s Home celebrated the 150th Anniversary of the Little Sisters’ arrival in America. Cardinal Joseph W. Tobin, with 15 priests, concelebrated the Eucharistic celebration. The music during Mass was beautiful, with cantors, a guest organist and trumpeter. The Cardinal spoke about the charism of St. Jeanne Jugan and the trust in the Divine Providence of the first Little Sisters who left France not knowing what they were going to find once they arrived in the United States. What they did find was a friend, Reverend Ernest Lelièvre, a French priest devoted to the Little Sisters, waiting for them when their ship docked in New York. He had arrived only a few months before and was to be their ambassador to this new country. With his help and that of many other wonderful friends and benefactors, in a few short years, the Little Sisters firmly established themselves in America. The thousands of elderly cared for during these past 150 years, attest to the confidence those seven Little Sisters had. They thus succeeded in bringing a great wave of charity to our shores.
