Before there was Rosa Parks, there was Claudette Colvin.Claudette Covin was fifteen when she refused to move to the
back of the bus on March 2, 1955. Rosa Parks did not refuse tomove to the back of the bus until months later (December1,
1955).
Martin Luther King Jr. improvised the most iconic part of his "IHave a Dream Speech".

Inoculation was first introduced to America by a slave namedOnesimus.
The earliest recorded protest against slavery was by theQuakers in 1688.
One in four cowboys was black. The real "Lone Ranger"was inspired by an African American man named Bass
Reeves.
The character Betty Boop was inspired by a Black jazz singerin Harlem named Esther Jones.
Bessie Coleman was the first licensed African AmericanFemale pilot. She received her international pilot's license in
1921.
Interracial marriage was banned in the United States in 1664and overturned until over 300 years later (1967).

Oprah Winfrey receives the Cecil B. de MilleAward at the 75th Annual Golden Globe Awards.
Oprah Winfrey's Golden Globe Speech
At the 2018 Golden Globes, Oprah Winfrey accepted her CecilB DeMille Award with a message to the young girls.
"It is not lost on me that at this moment, there are some littlegirls watching as I become the first black woman to be given
the same award," Winfrey stated.
In addition, she also addressed her awareness and support of"Me Too" and "Time's Up" movements which trended on
social during and after the Golden Globes broadcast.

Black Panther
Marvel Studios is taking us to the fictional African countryWakanda in the newest addition to the Marvel Universe.
In this movie, T'Challa (Black Panther) returns home after hisfather's death and becomes the new king of Wakanda.
Watch as the Black Panther faces enemies and defeats foeswhile reigning as King T'Challa. During Black History Month,
Black Panther hits theaters on February 16, 2018.

Chinese New Year is an annual 15-day festival in China thatoccurs sometime between January 21 and February 20
to Western calendars.
The holiday is sometimes called the Lunar New Year becausethe dates of celebration follow the phases of the moon. Thisweek of relaxation has been designated Spring Festival.
Celebrations often include firecrackers, fireworks, and redclothes and decoration. In addition, young people are given
money in colorful red envelopes.

China Bans Hip-Hop Culture and Tattoos
The Chinese Government has banned hip-hop culture andtattoos from appearing on television.
China's top media regulator has specifically required thattelevision programs should not feature actors with tattoos, and
they must not depict hip-hop culture or sub-culture.
Multiple actors and rappers have been removed fromtelevision, and social media in China is raging with angry
responses to the new ban.

Organization Spotlight
Along with celebrating Black History Month, the Office of Diversityand Inclusion would like to celebrate and recognize the Association
of Black Collegians (ABC).
The mission of ABC is to strive to educate and expose the Maryvillecampus community to African American experiences and culture,
while providing leadership opportunities, support, and mentorship tothe Black student population on campus.
This month is especially impactful and important to ABC. BlackHistory Month is the time to celebrate black pioneers who have
fought, influenced, and represented the black culture. The month isdedicated to individuals who have paved the way for our ABC
organization and ABC organizations across the world. It is importantthat we make sure the culture is celebrated to recognize what has
positively impacted the world.
