Year In Space By Nathan Chen

Late on Tuesday night, astronaut Scott Kelly and two other Russian astronauts, Mikhail Kornienko and Sergy Volkov landed in a Kazakhstan desert on their spaceship. Scott was the first American astronaut to spend a year in space. He spent 340 consecutive days in space beating the previous record 215 days, made by Michael Lopaz-Alegria. Scott was the commander of the ship until he passed the job to Timothy Kopra.

Scott Kelly was one of the 13 astronauts and cosmonauts representing 7 nations that went to space. Their goal was to learn how the “long duration” space flights affect the human body. They all launched their spaceships on March 27th, 2015.

One third of astronauts in NASA had problems with their eyesight. Scientists are trying to discover the reason. Luckily, Scott’s identical twin brother, Mark Kelly is a retired astronaut, and is ready to help with the research. NASA’s plan is to compare the twins to see the differences. Funny enough, Scott came back to earth two inches taller, but then, overnight he shrunk back to his regular height. Scientists are still studying all the data

that Kelly and his team brought back.

  • Botswana Wildlife Conservation by Khumo Newman

Botswana is in Southern Africa. It is almost the size of Texas. Nearly 40% is protected for wildlife management. Two years ago the Botswana government decided to ban the hunting of wildlife in the country. It did so because many animals were being poached. People from other countries, including some Americans, would come to Botswana to kill animals such as elephants and rhinos and take their heads, horns and tusks. Those people are called trophy hunters. Others, particularly from China and Vietnam, pay large amounts of money for elephant tusks and rhino horns because they believe (wrongly) that these items have magical powers. 1kg (2.2 pounds) of rhino horn can pay $65,000.

Animals seem to know they are safe in Botswana because they have stopped migrating to neighboring countries, such as Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Namibia. Now almost 40% of all the elephants in Africa are found in Botswana and the number is increasing as African elephants are being slaughtered in other countries in large numbers for their tusks. At this rate Botswana may be the only country left where you will find African elephants and rhinos.

Opinion: I hope other countries will follow Botswana's lead and protect their wildlife for future generations. A few weeks ago, six U.S Senators and a Congressman visited Botswana to see the work that Botswana was doing to stop poaching and wildlife trafficking. They were very impressed, and said America should help the Botswana army and game rangers with equipment and technical support. As America is a close friend of Botswana, I hope it will do so.

The Emoji: A New Word in the Dictionary by Reese Narcisenfeld

In 2015, the Oxford dictionary decided to add the word “emoji” to the dictionary. People who write the dictionary will add a word if many people understand what it means. This is definitely true for the emoji!

The emoji was first introduced in Japan in the 1990s. Now emojis are used by major phone companies all over the world. There are so many people of all ages that use and love emojis. They are used when texting and emailing to show how you are feeling. Or, an emoji can be used instead of words.

For example, If I am in the mood for pizza, I may text my friend a pizza emoji.

Or, if I am feeling tired and want to go to sleep, I will text my friend a sleep emoji.

  • Emojis are a lot of fun. There are 74 new emojis that may come out in 2016!

What is Zika By: McKenzie Suggs

Sounds like a girl’s name, but it is actually a virus that is spreading to people from mosquitoes. Scientists in Africa are stepping up the fight against mosquitoes, in order to kill them.

Zika virus is suspected to be the cause of thousands of babies being born with microcephaly. This means the babies have small heads and possible brain damage due to an undeveloped brain.

Zika was first discovered in 1947 by accident in East Africa, by scientists who were working on another viral disease. The virus was named after the Zika Forest in Uganda, where it was first discovered. The virus is spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito, which also carry Yellow and Dengue Fever. Zika virus outbreaks have occurred in Africa, Southeast Asia and in the Pacific Islands. Did you know that mosquitoes have done more harm to the human race than any other animal? Every year, millions of people are infected with malaria, yellow fever, dengue fever and other viruses. Mosquitoes kill 600,000 people a year, with the majority of these being children in Africa. Scientist Maureen Coetzee, is trying to understand mosquitoes in order to eliminate them. In her laboratory located at the National Institute for Communicable Diseases in South Africa, they are breeding male mosquitoes, sterilizing them and then releasing them into the wild. This will prevent the offspring from hatching and let them die without reproducing. Controlling mosquitoes is a very hard task and a never ending battle.

As of now, there is no cure or vaccine and thankfully deaths are rare. The common symptoms are fever, rash, joint pain and red eyes. These may last for several days to a week. If you happen to be traveling to those countries affected, you should wear insect repellent, long sleeves and pants. For pregnant women, avoid those countries all together.

2016 Presidential Election By Elizabeth Martin

This year’s election has been very interesting. The Republican party started with fifteen candidates and is now down to five. The Democratic side started with five candidates and is now down to two. The five candidates still running on the Republican side are Donald Trump, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, John Kasich, and Ben Carson. The remaining Democrats are Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders.

March 1st was Super Tuesday, a big day where fourteen states were in primaries and caucuses. This was a day for candidates to get many delegates and voters. Donald Trump won on the Republican side with 43.4% in Alabama, Arkansas with 46.7%, Georgia at 38.8%, 48.4% in Massachusetts, in Tennessee 38.9% and in Vermont 32.7%,. Finally he received 34.7% in Virginia. Cruz won in Alaska with 36.4% and 34.4% in Oklahoma. Also Cruz luckily won his own state Texas with 43.8%. Rubio won in Minnesota with a lead of 36.5%. Now for the Democratic side. Clinton won in Alabama with 77.8%, 66.3% in Arkansas, and in Georgia 71.3%. In Massachusetts she received 50.1%, 66.1% in Tennessee, 52.2% in Texas and 64.3% in Virginia. Sanders, won Vermont, his own state, with 86.1%, in Oklahoma 51.9%, and in Minnesota 61.6%.

Recently, there have been caucuses in Nevada for the Democratic Party and in South Carolina and Nevada for the Republicans. The Republicans already had a primary in South Carolina and the Democrats had one later on February 27th.

Another event you may have heard of is called a debate. Debates are when one party gets together and individual candidates are asked questions by the hostess or host of the debate. Debates are also a

    4

  • time to show America why you should vote for that person. When candidates talk about their beliefs, other candidates, voters, and news reporters often question them.

Update: As of March 27th, there are only three Republican candidates left. Both Marco Rubio and Ben Carson dropped out.

    Black History By Clarke Norman

Way back in the 1960’s, Martin Luther King Jr., a great leader in the Civil Rights Movement, had a dream. Martin thought African Americans were treated very poorly. He wanted to change how they were treated. He wanted everyone to be equal. His famous quote was “Don't hate, love." He explained that if you were mean and tried to hurt the police they would probably injure you, but with love they wouldn't hurt you at all. One day that dream came true, but unfortunately that dream came true after he died from an assassination. Many people missed him terribly. The good news was that Martin's wife took over and told the world about being equal just like he did. Many people followed King's ideas except one person named Malcolm X. Detractors accused him of racism and violence. He promoted separation rather than integration. The most important thing about Black History though, is about honoring the leaders who helped end segregation. There were many African Americans that lost their lives in the struggle for freedom. Several people celebrated the “Civil Rights Movement” recently by watching the movie “Selma.” By the end of the film, viewers saw the great accomplishments from this piece of history.

  • The Faith of The Supreme Court By Jack Sandi

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia died in his sleep on February 13th. He was 79 years old. President Ronald Reagan appointed Scalia to the Supreme Court in 1986. He was known for his conservative believes. He believed the justices should follow the law as written in the Constitution. He did not think that it should be changed.

The Supreme Court has nine Justices in total. Now there are only 8 left. The Supreme Court decides on cases from the lower courts. So, if there is a case now and the justices decide equally for each side, 4-4, the decision of the lower courts will stay as the decision.

The Republicans, and Republican candidates want to wait to select a new conservative justice. President Obama is not a conservative. They worry that if President Obama elects a new justice, the new justice will not be conservative. If the Republicans win the election, the new President will select a conservative justice.

School News The Third And Fourth Grade Musical

By Anneke Lewis and Samantha Pepper

The third and fourth graders put on a new type of show this year, a Broadway revue! All of the third and fourth graders pretended to go to New York City in a school bus. The classes performed their own Broadway songs and sung, “ Give my Regards to Broadway” from George M. and “So Long Farewell” from the Sound of Music which is a true story about a governess who governs seven kids. In the third grade Mrs. Cohen’s class performed “Seize the Day “ from “Newsies” a story about a newsboy strike and Mrs. Strickler’s class sang “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” a very hard to spell song from Mary Poppins, a musical about two kids’ magical nanny named Mary Poppins! Mrs. Jacobi’s class did “I Don’t Want To Grow Up” from “ Peter Pan” This is about some kids who go to Neverland! Lastly our class performed “Grease Lightning” from the musical”Grease” which is about boys trying to get girls to like them. Then everyone finished up with “We Go Together” which is also from “Grease”!

My Thoughts About Performing at the Third and Fourth Grade Broadway Show

    By Charlie Buckles

On March 17, 2016 the third and fourth graders performed a broadway review show for our families. As a performer, I was very excited to be in the musical because it was a great opportunity for me to get a chance to be a Newsies character. I liked this because I got to learn about what happened in New York in 1899 during the Newsboys strike and pretend that I was back in the 1800’s. Dressing in character was also fun, as I would never wear the clothes that were worn back then, unless I was playing golf! I was also excited about singing other songs like the one from Grease called “We Go Together” because I love to sing. I have been singing since I was three years old and it makes me feel strong and powerful and it’s my way of expressing feelings. Singing also makes me feel calm but at

    9

  • the same time excited and energized. When I am performing I feel very comfortable and happy. I couldn’t wait for the show!

The Importance of All School Assemblies By Alisha Schruefer

A question has arisen in the Bullis community regarding the importance of all-school assemblies! Namely, should Bullis keep their all- school assemblies? All -school assemblies are times when the whole school comes together. I think that these assemblies are important because they are a time for us to come together as a community to celebrate, inform, and discuss.

Some people think an assembly is not so important. One argument is that whole school assemblies take a lot of time which we could spend doing other things. I disagree with that opinion because we can postpone those things to a later time, and have the assembly instead. Some people think separate division assemblies (LS Assembly) are enough, but I think these assemblies are our only chance to get the feeling of being with the whole Bullis community. Two of the most memorable ones I personally attended were the Acorn Assembly and the Chinese New Year Assembly. One of the solutions to this difference of opinion might be to schedule the all-school assembly for every OTHER Monday, so students would have a school week uninterrupted by an assembly followed by a week with an assembly. Basically, you could have it both ways! Another solution is similar. You could also change the time of the assembly. For instance, 10:05 could be changed to 1:20, on alternate weeks; a time where perhaps students are not doing their most important work.

In my opinion, though, all-school assemblies are an important tool to bring the whole Bullis community together.

  • Public vs Private schools By Alex Bonham

In our world, there are public schools and private schools. Some people prefer private schools rather than public schools while others like public instead of private. Personally, I prefer private schools because the money that you pay to get into the school helps buy new materials, pay our teachers and construct new building to improve our education. All the different classes help us learn in interesting ways. If you like having small classes, you should pick private schools; if you prefer big classes, public schools are the way for you to go. Some people may choose to attend public schools because they are free and everybody lives nearby the school. In our area, there is a wide selection of good public schools and private schools to choose from. I, however, am happy to be in a private school.

He was my Grandpa! Black History Hero

    By Serena Bostic

My grandpa was someone who I never met but I know he was a good person. He was a doctor who took care of kids and babies. My mom used to help him examine the babies. That's why she thinks she and her brother like kids so much. Grandpa was a very humble man. My grandpa thought he was going to be a football player. My grandpa graduated from Clark University. He also graduated from medical school in Buffalo New York. He never turned a patient down, money or no money. Upon his death, the school started a scholarship in his name for students going to college. I never met him but I love him!!!

  • Science Hiccups

    By Emily Rubenstein

Chances are, you’ve had the hiccups before. Hiccups are formed in your diaphragm, which is a muscle in your lower chest. Like all of the rest of your body parts, it usually works fine. But like all of the rest of your body parts, it malfunctions every so often. We call its malfunctions hiccups. When you inhale, your diaphragm helps get the air into your lungs. But the diaphragm can get irritated by overeating, eating too fast, or even being nervous or excited. When that happens, it jerks suddenly, which causes you to suck air into your lungs. The next step for the air is your voice box. Then that causes your vocal chords to close abruptly. When you add it all up, your sum is a nice, big hiccup. Hiccups don’t hurt, but they do feel a little funny. Rumors buzz around about how to cure hiccups, though not all of them are true. Some real ways to cure your hiccups are sticking sugar under your tongue, counting to ten and holding your breath, or sometimes it actually works to have someone scare you. Hiccups may not be a big deal, partly because they normally last a few minutes. More severe cases of hiccups can last days, weeks, or even months. Though usually when that happens it is not just hiccups, but a much worse medical issue. It is very unlikely, so do not fret every time you HIC.

Yawning Is Contagious By: Bennett Richman

Have you ever seen someone who yawns after you yawn and soon all the people around you start yawning? Scientists have found that yawns are contagious by studying animals. People yawn by opening their mouths and inhaling and then exhaling. Yawning happens when people are trying to stay awake. Some people say that yawning is a behavior that is seen in herds of animals. It is believed that yawning helps the animals stay awake so that they are alert and ready for danger. They believe that when one animal yawns, they all yawn just like birds who take flight at the same time. We think of this as being contagious but it is really herd behavior.

  • Interviews Interview with Softball Coach Jason Deitz

    by Maison Metro

    1) What was the team’s record last year (wins and losses)?

Mr. Deitz: I believe the record was 3-12.

     2)  How many players from last year’s team are returning this year? How many players have you lost?

Mr. Deitz: We have lost a total of 4 players from last season's varsity team.

There are only 6 girls returning from last season's varsity team. The others are all freshman.   3) When you look at your team, what areas of the game would you say are strengths, and what areas are places you can improve this year (for example: pitching, fielding, base running)?

Mr. Deitz: This season we are in a rebuilding mode. We have a few experienced players mixed in with a lot of players that are newer to the sport. Our biggest strength is that we have an eager group of players willing and wanting to learn this game.  This sport has not been given the attention it deserves and they ALL want to change that perception.  We are focusing more on the basic mechanics of this sport. It all starts with our pitching. We have brought on a pitching instructor to assist second year Hayley Sanders. She has made great strides this off season and we are expecting great things from her for years to come.  This off-season, the Bullis girls also put a lot of work into their strengthening and conditioning. Adding specialty coaches and specialty training will truly benefit this program for years to come. They may not be the most talented group yet, but I guarantee they will be before it's all said and done.

    4) Is there one team on your schedule, for whatever reason, you just really want to beat?

    14

  • Mr. Deitz: There's no one team. Our main objective is to not beat ourselves.  Our philosophy is simple... become a better player and team than we were the day before.

     5)  What types of drills/exercises at practice seem to really help the team prepare for the game?

Mr. Deitz: We start with stretching. Then move on to warm up throws. We then break into two groups, fielding and batting. Batting stations consists of hitting off a tee, soft toss, heavy balls and bunting. Fielding consists of ground balls, line drives and pop fly drills. Then we warm up our pitchers and catchers.

Paper Wishes, by Lois Sepahban, is about a girl named Manami who had to leave her hometown, Bainbridge Island, in 1942, after the attack on Pearl Harbor. The government said that all the Japanese Americans must leave their home and stay at a prison camp. Manami is very sad to leave the island, and everything on it, but she can't face leaving her dog, Yujiin. So Manami decides to hide Yujiin under her coat and bring him to the camp. Unfortunately a guard sees Yuijiin, and Manami is forced to leave her, making her and her Grandpa devastated. Manami clings to the thought of Yuijiin returning to her. This book really makes you feel empathy for Manami and her family, and hooks you with the question of “What will happen next?”

    Sports March Madness

    By Dillon Malkani

Have you ever heard of March Madness and wondered what is was all about? Well, in this article, you are going to find out all about the March Madness tournament.

What is March Madness? March Madness, played each spring season, is the men’s college basketball tournament, which determines the national champion of the major college basketball teams.

    17

  • In this tournament, there are a total of 68 teams. These teams are divided into four regions and then organized into "brackets", which map out which teams face one another. Each team is "seeded" or ranked, within its region from 1 to 16. In the beginning, four games between eight lower ranked teams are played. The winners of the first four games will then join the actual tournament which lasts for three weekends. At this time, lower-ranked teams are positioned to play in the bracket against higher ranked teams. Each weekend teams are eliminated, from the first round consisting of 64 teams, to another round with 16 teams (the “Sweet Sixteen”), and then to a round with only 4 teams (the “Final Four”). The Final Four is usually played during the first weekend in April. These four teams, one from each region (East, South, Midwest, and West), compete for the national championship.

    What are Cinderella teams?

Every year there are teams that are not expected to go very far in the tournament and every year there is at least one team that has an unexpected win. Those teams that have unexpected wins are called Cinderella teams. Top contenders and who is predicted to win:

In 2015, Duke University won the national championship. Over time, UCLA has won the most national championship titles. This year, the top 5 teams in the tournament are as follows: Villanova, Kansas, Virginia, Oklahoma, and Xavier. Currently, the University of Maryland is ranked #10. According to CBS, the final two will be Villanova and Kentucky.

Last but not least, I recommend watching March Madness and participating in a March Madness bracket where you can predict who will win.

Good Luck Orioles By Will Gawronski

The Orioles are expected to be in 4th place in the American League East (AL East), trailing behind the Yankees, Red Sox and Blue Jays. Even though fourth place doesn’t sound like a good spot, the team still has the best corners in the AL East with Manny Machado, and Chris Davis. Both of these players were superstars last year. Also the O’s have an awesome closer with Zach Britton, who had over 32 saves last year. He is expected to do the same in 2016. The Orioles have Hyun-soo Kim and Adam Jones who are expected to be exceptional outfielders. The O’s are hoping Matt Wieters will do great behind the plate as a catcher. Finally, the O’s are glad to have amazing manager Buck Showalter, who is well respected among the players. With all these favorable players, I think the O’s could surprise the AL East and end the season in 3rd place.

    18

  • The O’s still face some challenges this upcoming year. First, all the teams in the AL East are tough to beat, except the Rays. The Yankees bullpen, which is one of the top 5 bullpens ever in the MLB, is exceptional and will be hard for the O’s. Also, the team has weak starting pitchers with Yovani Gallardo and Chris Tillman who are their best starting pitchers, but are average players compared to every other team. Another weakness is JJ Hardy and Jonathan Schoop, who are the O’s starting middle infield, because they have been injured many times. If the O’s improve their pitching, they will be in the top three.

The O’s improved their roster this year gaining Yovani Gallardo, Texas Rangers pitcher. He could be a star pitcher. They also purchased Hyun-soo Kim, a Korean league superstar outfielder. I hope Hyun-soo Kim has a good debut showing his hitting skills. However, the team lost Gerardo Parra, star outfielder, to the Rockies. I wish the O’s good luck for this season.

Washington Nationals Spring Training By: Edward Stewart

It’s spring, so the Washington Nationals are training hard. The Washington Nationals baseball team, better known as the Nats are in Florida to start their Spring 2016 Training. They won the East Championship, last year, but they came up short in their fight to play in the World Series. This season the Nats made lots of improvements to the team roster and could win big this year. The pre-season games start in early March and go until the season opener on April 1, 2016. The Nats are training hard every day and I know when the season starts they will be ready to PLAY BALL!! Go Nats!

    Arts and Entertainment Pablo Picasso

    By Alicia Wang

Pablo Picasso was born on October 25, 1881. He died on April 8, 1973. He is most known for his introduction to cubism. Cubism was a popular style of art in the early 20th century where a painting or drawing was made with simple shapes. This style was seen later in his life. Earlier though, he lived through a time when he only painted with shades of blue and blue green and occasionally included warm colors which is now known as the “Blue Period.” One of his famous paintings from this period is “The Old Guitarist.”There was another similar period when he painted more happily. He used

  • orange and pink colors. It was called the “Rose Period.” These periods I found noteworthy because they showed his emotions throughout his lifetime.

Spring Break and After By Mariam El Taguiri

If you are bored during spring break, here are some ideas for you! You can ask your parents to have a playdate or sleepover. If your parents say no, you can always play games with your brothers or sisters like cards, board games, hide and seek, or if the weather is nice, you can go outside. If you are an only child, here are some other options. You can watch a movie, play with your pet (if you have one), create some art or play with your toys. Do you have a favorite sport? Call your neighborhood friends and plan a game. Since on spring break the weather is usually nice, you can go outside and plant a garden. I hope some of these ideas help you if you are bored during spring break. or any other time this season.

Things To Do During Spring By: Amanda Brille

Here are some things you can do over spring break and on weekends when you’re at home. You can bake. It's fun and delicious and even more fun when you bake with friends. Next, you can get together with friends and play outside. You can play games like “Capture the Flag” and “Hide and Seek.” You can also go to a cooking class. It's fun to learn how to cook and also make a home cooked meal for your family. Another idea is to go to the movies. Get popcorn and candy, and watch a great movie with friends and family. How about taking an art class? Art is a beautiful thing and you can make amazing art pieces. Maybe you want to get outdoors instead and plan a hike. Its great to get outside with family and see amazing things in nature. You can also start a business like

    21

  • running a lemonade stand. If it's very hot, people will want a cold drink and you can make some money! If it’s a rainy day, you can go to the mall and spend your lemonade savings to buy things. Spend some quality time with your family by playing board games with them like Monopoly or Apples to Apples or have sleepovers with friends. You can make DIYS and just hang out together. Reading good books is always an option. If you are not at 1 million words yet, you can reach that goal shortly after spring break. Another idea is to go on a picnic. You can make tasty meals and have lots of fun. Build a fort in your house. That can help you play games like “Hide and Seek.” Have a spa day! It’s so refreshing and keeps your skin clean. Since every day you have to wake up early in the morning for school, you can, sleep in! Extra rest makes you will feel good. Take a trip to interesting museums like the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. You can see exhibits like the African Elephant, Eternal life in Ancient Egypt and The Hope Diamond. You can also go to the Smithsonian American Art Museum where there are exhibits like Wonder and Irving Penn: Beyond Beauty. Have you visited the Cherry Blossom Festival? Family Day and Opening Ceremonies are on March 26th. Thanks to the warm weather, peak bloom for the cherry blossoms is during the Bullis spring break! The National Park Service predicts that the peak bloom dates are March 18-23. Happy Spring!
