Russian biggest oil company LUKOIL plans to start offshore oil extraction near Lithuania’s and Russia's (Kaliningrad region) Curonian Spit National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The oil deposit D6 to be exploited, situated 22,5 km from the coast in the Kaliningrad region, 6 km to the Lithuanian-Russian border on the Baltic Sea shelf.

Poland have started similar offshore oil exploitation project in another oil deposit B3 during last decade of 20th century. These projects are marking new development of offshore oil extraction with cross-border impacts on environment in the region.

Poland (Petrobaltic company) and Russia (LUKOIL) are pioneering and leading countries in this new development. Lithuania is starting similar activities in the Curonian Lagoon which have border with Kaliningrad region as well.
