Australia produces more lithium than any other country. It has the single largest lithium mine and will have one and possibly two more operating lithium mines by the middle of 2016. Lithium is a fundamental material for lithium rechargeable batteries. Demand is increasing strongly due to the increasing use of lithium ion batteries for transport and grid storage applications and the growth is expected to be long term. Once lithium ion batteries are superseded, it will probably be by alternative chemistry and higher performance rechargeable lithium batteries. Consequently, a strong and reliable lithium supply chain is of vital importance to the battery industry.

Can Conventional Mining Meet Battery Demand? Adrian Griffin – Managing Director, Lithium Australia (LIT)

Analysts continue to forecast shortages in battery materials, including graphite, cobalt and lithium. The predicted shortages are fuelled by a seemingly insatiable demand for lithium batteries, in both stationary and portable power applications. Lithium, from hard rock sources, requires structural and technological changes to meet demand.Graphite supply has numerous alternatives and is unlikely to be constrained. Changes in cathode chemistry will ease the pressure on cobalt supply and changes in processing technology and restructuring the supply chain will ensure adequate supplies of lithium are delivered into the expanding market. A revolutionary process, owned by Lithium Australia NL is being commercialised as part of the global lithium supply solution and aims to deliver lithium chemicals at a cost comparable to the world’s cheapest producers.

The Evolution and Future of Transport Regulations Ben Firkins – Dangerous Goods Inspector, Civil Aviation Safety Authority

The global demand for lithium batteries continues to grow, with new applications emerging every day for this ubiquitous power source. Regulators tend to be reactive and invariably lag behind emerging technologies when it comes to managing and mitigating the associated hazards. This session will look at how the transport regulations have developed and evolved over the years to try to mitigate the risks and the particular concerns that preoccupy the minds of those responsible for airline safety. We will then look forward to explore possible opportunities to develop a more coordinated and cohesive approach that provides the industry with a more stable set of transport regulations.

Do LFP Batteries Live Up To Their Claims – A safer and More Cost Effective Option for hot Climates? Elizabeth Duguid – UWA and Water Corporation CEED student

Rechargeable batteries are utilised in a large variety of applications within the Water Corporation. In particular, for systems in remote locations which require solar or off-grid power supply such as radio repeaters and cathodic protection. Advancements in technology offer the opportunity to reduce the whole-life cost of batteries and an investigation is being undertaken to evaluate potential benefits. Laboratory tests were performed on both lead acid batteries and LiFePO4 to study the effects of elevated temperature. Additionally, several field trials of LiFePO4 batteries have been initiated to determine their suitability and to uncover any potential “real life” issues. This presentation will the discuss the methodology and preliminary results of this investigation.

Lithium Battery Applications in Australia – Is the Market Ready? Masoud Abshar – Managing Director, Magellan Power

This presentation will draw upon case studies where lithium batteries have been used in UPS, DC power and energy storage applications. Masoud will explain the environmental factors in Australia and why lithium is perhaps the most suited battery technology for our climate. He will also explain their occupational health and safety benefits over lead acid, and the rapid uptake of renewable energy and how lithium is leading the way in this application. Masoud and his colleagues have been pioneering the use of lithium batteries in Australian back up power applications since 2008.

Getting your Lithium Batteries to Destination Janet McCracken – Co-Proprietor, Airsafe Transport Training

Put the words “Lithium” and “Battery” in the same sentence and the air transport industry runs for cover. Not only have the regulations for transporting lithium batteries by air changed every year for the past ten years, this year they have changed again in April. We will look at what’s spooked the aviation industry and a comparison of the regulations for air, road, rail and sea for yesterday, today and tomorrow. The surface transport regulations are fairly well determined a couple of years in advance but with air transport what’s happening any further ahead than tomorrow? Your guess is as good as mine.

sIMON ChANSimon is the chief engineer at Radlink Communications, a Perth based telecommunications, manufacturing and design company. Simon holds an engineering degree from the University of Western Australia and over his career has worked with electronic, software and systems engineering, remote control technologies and communications.

For the past 8 years, Radlink have been delivering remotely located, large-scale, digital 2-way critical communications infrastructure for many ‘blue chip’ companies such as BHP, Rio Tinto, FMG, Atlas Iron, Chevron and BP. Many of these systems have been deployed in remote parts of Australia where there is no easy access to grid-connected electrical power and they have used ‘traditional’ deep-cycle Lead Acid battery solutions. Recently Simon and his colleagues have been searching for suitable alternative energy harvesting and storage technologies and have partnered with a Lithium battery supplier in China to offer turn-key energy storage design, manufacture, supply, maintenance and support in Australia. Simon will be sharing his recent experiences with lithium battery technology and where the market is heading.
