DEPUTY PRINCIPAL Attendance at school is compulsory for all students. Being on time for school is the best way for students to maximise their learning outcomes. It is also a good habit that flows through into the workforce later in life. We have now moved to text messaging each day for students who arrive late to school. Roll Call procedures: When the bell rings for the start of the school day, all students are to attend their Roll Call Class. Students will be in the

appropriate location and marked present. Students then read quietly while the school notices are read out to them. If a student arrives late to school, they are to move directly to their timetabled roll call class. The teacher in the roll call class will mark the student in late. Notes for lateness will be handed in to the roll call teacher. The front office has a scaffolded note to fill in for parents/carers who come to school with their child and have not written a note. This note is given to the student who then goes to their roll call class. All students have been informed of this procedure at the whole school assembly this week. Any student who arrives to school after roll call period will need to see the front office. The school is following up students who are habitually late to school without a valid reason. Parents will be contacted via SMS.

Production of Grease amps up as performance dates near

Staff and students are working hard in preparations for their upcoming performance schedule of Grease. As we come closer to performance dates the cast and directors are meeting three times a week to ensure we are bringing you a high quality, and polished production. Students are getting excited as they are finishing up learning their songs, lines, and stage directions, gaining confidence in themselves and the production.

Mr Jeffers, the Director, brings high energy to the Rehearsals, encouraging students to have fun and develop their Drama Skills, while Ms Aldrick, the Musical Director, is working hard with the ensemble and lead cast to extend their vocal abilities. Mrs Fairbrother has been lending her dance expertise to the production, assisting as Director of Choreography, giving the performance a flair for dance and energy.

Students are enthusiastic about their upcoming performances; Macayla Lamb - Year 9 from the ensemble said, “We are spending a lot of time on it, but it’s worth it because it’s going to be a great show!” This combination of hard work from directors and student promises to bring you a performance of energy and talent, and to show you a Grease we all know and love.

There are four scheduled performances for the production at the end of the Term 2.

Tickets are on sale and can be booked now from https://www.trybooking.com/BCLTC

See you there!

Lithgow High School was well represented at this year’s ANZAC Day March , with a large number of students choosing to represent our school in the ANZAC March and Ceremony even with the day being at the end of the School Holidays. Lithgow High School Students could also be seen representing the Australian Air League and the Army Cadets. Our captains Tom Luchetti and Amber Shaw spoke during the official ceremony and represented our school well.

A big thanks goes out to all the students and teachers who helped to make our school and the rest of Lithgow proud by marching on ANZAC day. We would also like to thank the students who marched in Wallerawang and Portland.

Lithgow High are proud of the enormous success of our Annual Colour Run. The event was held on the last day of Term 1 on the school’s very own Cross-Country Track. The day began with a range of Athletic Events and Obstacle Course Events before moving on to the much anticipated Colour Run. It was an amazing day for both students and teachers with dress ups galore. We would like to say a huge thank you to all involved in organising the day. From a Year 12 point of view it was a great way to have fun with those that mean a lot to us before the seriousness of the HSC fully kicks in. This event was definitely one of the most memorable school days we have experienced.

Mandiyaba Yadhaa, which means Possum Dream in Wiradjuri language will bring together 15 young Aboriginal women and girls to create traditional possum skin women’s shoulder mantles and a new dance and song developed from Wiradjuri creation stories.

A series of 6 workshops will take place at Lithgow High School with young women from the High Sista Speak Program participating. Wiradjuri Dance Artist and Director of the Wagana Aboriginal Dancers Jo Clancy, is the project's creator and director and she will be working in consultation with school staff and Mai-Lynn Elliot, Sista Speak facilitator.

Possum skin cloaks were a vital part of Aboriginal life before colonization. Aboriginal people used cloaks to keep warm, to sleep on, to carry their babies and to trade.

When they died they were often wrapped in their cloaks to keep them connected to Country. Skins were gathered, stretched and cured and then sewn together with kangaroo sinew. The designs on the skins depicted stories of Clan and Country.

These workshops will bring back the knowledge of this practice to the community.

Jo believes that the process of coming together to make cloaks, to share stories and to dance evokes the quest for seeking knowledge and the practice of the ‘old ways’ which in turn offers social inclusion, education and knowledge acquisition and cultural affirmation in the community.

Year 10 Work Experience 29th July - 2nd August 2019 This year all Year 10 students will be participating in the Work Experience Program from 29th July - 2nd August 2019 (Term 3, Week 2).

Mrs Hamment has been working with Year 10 during their Careers lessons to provide the students with information and skills to assist with Work Experience.

Once students have decided on an area of interest, they then need to approach the employer or organisation and make an initial enquiry about Work Experience.

Students can then take the Work Experience documents to be completed, and "book" their place for 29th July - 2nd August. Mrs Hamment is available to work with students who are experiencing difficulty in organising a place.

Please encourage and assist students with their work experience and if you are in a position to provide a work experience opportunity yourself please let Mrs Hamment know. This is a great opportunity for students, particularly with planning for Year 11 Subject Selection and for their post school transition.

All Work Experience documents must be finalised by Week 8 of this term. Mrs Hamment is working with all students to ensure that every student has the opportunity to participate in this program, she will be contacting parent's individually over the next two weeks to assist students who have not completed their work experience documents. As places are quickly filling it is recommended student's contact the organisations they would like to complete Work Experience with as soon as possible.

In Week 1 of this term, we delivered Elevate Education Study Seminars to the entire school Year 7-12.

Elevate's multi award winning study skills seminars are designed to achieve behavioural change among students teaching tips and tricks to study more effectively.

It isn't enough that students simply understand what they need to do in their study, the challenge is getting the students to use and apply the skills they learn. Elevate gets students using the skills from its seminars and workshops by using an integrated process that works!

Congratulations to the Year 12 Students who completed the last session of the six Elevate Education HSC Study Seminars. We hope these study seminars have effectively helped you to build on your pattern of study ensuring you achieve the best possible result in your HSC.

Lithgow High is continually striving to provide our students with academic enrichment opportunities.

A letter from your P&C:

The function of the P&C at high school is to work with school staff to create a better educational environment for our children. If you would like to find out what’s going on at school, what the kids are involved in and the great opportunities being presented to them, come along to a P&C meeting. You can then have conversations with your kids about these things.

P&C meetings Our meetings are brief and informal and run for 40 minutes to 1 hour (never longer!)

Meetings are held the first Monday of the month in the foyer (up the main steps of the school, outside the hall). Our next meetings in Term 2 will trial a start time of 6:00pm. We are hoping this will encourage some new faces. We are always looking for new members and we would love to see you there! You can also check the Term Planner in the Newsletters for when the next meeting is on.

The next meeting will be Monday 3rd June starting at 6:00pm.

We look forward to meeting you. Kind Regards, Kerry Bird President

About our Canteen: Our Canteen is a sub-committee of the P&C. The profit made from the Canteen is donated back to the school. THERE IS NO OTHER FUNDRAISING.

By supporting the Canteen either through your child purchasing from the Canteen or if you, a relative or friend would like to volunteer once a month (the hours are 10:45am-1:45pm), you are supporting your P&C.

Even if you have just a few spare hours, our canteen would love to hear from you. Volunteers don’t handle any money or need to know prices and the canteen staff will make you very welcome!

Mr Phillip Duncan was a student at Lithgow High. He left in 1963 and has since built up a very successful International Insurance Broking Business. In 2002, after a visit to Lithgow High School, he decided he would like to put something back into the school he attended. He decided to donate a Monetary Scholarship to a Year 12 Student. He wanted to encourage students that anything is possible with hard work and ambition. The scholarship is designed to give a school leaver a start in their post school life.

Recently the school received a letter from Mr Duncan with a request to increase the scholarship from one scholarship to two. He has also increased the amount of the scholarship, 1st place will receive a cheque for $3000 and the two runner up will receive $1500 each.

Mr Duncan wishes all Year 12 good luck in their studies and hopes they will work hard and put their best foot forward in obtaining the self-esteem of achievement. He hopes many students are able to apply for his scholarship.

The Phil Duncan Scholarship recipients will be announced on Year 12 Presentation Day. Applications will be available during Term 3.

Applications for the Phil Duncan Scholarship open on Tuesday 30th July and close on the Friday 16th August at 3.00pm

OUR CHICKENS GET A NEW HOUSE!

Unfortunately, we lost all our chicken sheds and livestock in the storm at the end of last year. Craig Marshall - Lithgow High School Farm Assistant, has been working tirelessly designing and constructing our new state of the art chicken sheds.

The chickens’ new home has been built to consider all weather and vermin protection needs and will hopefully withstand any future storms.

Craig states that the chickens are now so well looked after that he would happily swing a hammock and take up residence in the new sheds with them.

Many thanks to Craig, for all his hard work for our Ag Farm & chickens who are now busily enjoying their new home.

Congratulations to Kye Cameron and Harrison Hopkins on their successful selection into the Western Region Rugby League Team.

The boys travelled to Coonabarabran on the 1st and 2nd May, Kye in the U15’s Team and Harrison in the Open Side.

Both the Western Teams won their games in Coonabarabran and both the boys has been successful in gaining selection into the next stage into the greater Western Team that will travel to Toronto from Sunday 26th May - Wednesday 29th May.

Well done boys we look forward to see your results in the next games.

Kade Inwood - Year 11 and Zeke Evans - Year 10 were recently part of the Western Region Basketball Team that contested the Combined High School State Carnival held in Bathurst from the 1st-3rd of May. The Western Team had a very hard pool and a tough first two games on Day 1 where they were unable to find a win against South Coast, 70-47 and Sydney East 82-44. The Western Team had players out with injuries the team had to dig deep on Day 2, they fought hard and were successful winning both games 69 vs North Coast 65 and 60 vs Riverina 42. On Day 3 they played Sydney North winning and placing the Western Team 5th in the State, a very good effort. At the end of the tournament, Zeke was named MVP (Most Valuable Player) for the Western Team.

We are proud of your efforts both on and off the court, you are a credit to yourselves, your families and our school.

Our girls and boys Open Hockey Teams have played at home today playing Round One and the girls playing Round Two of the Combined High School Knockout Competition.

Both teams played well, the girls were very unlucky to go down 3-2 in a close match.

The boys weren't put to the test with Bathurst High School only having 7 players. Our boys were gracious and had 3 players transfer to the Bathurst Team to make it a more even playing field in the 2nd half of the game.

Boys won vs Bathurst High 5-0.

Girls loss vs Bathurst High 3-2.

Well done to both teams and coaches, Mr Conroy and Ms Saladine.

On This Day in History - 17 May (1536) Anne Boleyn is Executed

Anne Boleyn was the second wife of Henry VIII, who famously had six in total, and was perhaps the most famous. In 1523 Anne was to marry Henry Percy, the son of the Earl of Northumberland, but this was broken off. She was, at this time, a maid to the court of Henry VIII's wife Catherine of Aragon, and the king began courting her in early 1526.

Henry's interest in his wife's maid of honor was a turning point in English history. When the Catholic Church refused

to accept his annulment to Catherine of Aragon, and his marriage to Anne on 25th January 1533, Henry broke off relations with the Pope and established an independent Church of England.

The happy marriage was not to last, however. Anne gave birth to a daughter, the future Elizabeth I, and Henry was disappointed when she had three miscarriages and no son. A mere three years later he was courting the love of Jane Seymour.

In May 1536 Anne was arrested and imprisoned on charges of high treason, and found guilty in a trial by jury that contained her former fiance and her own uncle. She was beheaded four days later at the Tower of London, and Henry VIII was betrothed to Jayne Seymour one day later.
