Director's ReportIt's time for a new bookcase!

After 20 years of ministry helping publish over 1.4 million books, it's important to re-member that the purpose of the publishing projects has been to help people find, fol-low, and serve Christ. So, not just books, but particular books. After a quick scan of the projects we have helped publish, I see that a lot of them are aimed at people of all ages who need to find Christ, who perhaps do not believe in God at all. But

there are more book projects aimed at helping disciples follow Christ more completely, and helping leaders serve Christ more effectively. That reflects an underlying reality in ministry, first that books are great tools for all of what might be seen as stages in a person's growth in Christ. But also that books are increas-ingly effective and important as Christians focus their energies — individual and corporate — on others. Books are essential, foundational tools for the church around the world. That might seem obvious, but let me underscore it for you with comments we have heard recently.

Sergei Golovin, President of Christian Center for Science and Apologetics, in Ukraine: We started our publishing activity only because we cannot do without it. In the beginning our ministry was only meetings and seminars. But just an introduction to ideas of Biblical truth doesn't make great change if you do not give people something to think about, to think through, to get more details if they need it.

Daniel Manorath, Publishing Director at Central India Chris-tian Mission, in Damoh, India: People will respond to the Gospel when they hear it, but the books will sustain them.

Bob Sheffler, founder of Ivory Coast Christian Mission and author: Powerful printed material goes on and on in spreading im-portant truth and Christian influence. It impacts more people over a longer period of time and is always available for reference for others to use as they build the Kingdom. Say it once and it is gone. Print it and it continues to encourage the growth of God's Kingdom for years, decades or even centuries.

If you have ever wondered if your ministry through LATM was crucial and effective, the answer is Yes. Probably even more than we realize.

Doug ReedDirector of Development

In the early years, we felt blessed if we could help publish a dozen books in a year’s time: one per month. We were in our fifth year before we broke that barrier. By our 10th year we were averaging about 32 books per year. In 2008, we completed 52 projects: one per week. Our goal for 2012 is 62, and we’re well on our way to meeting it, thanks to you! Lord willing, our loyal Book Club members will fund 12 of those 62, and our new Fifty Fund initiative will help fund publication of the other 50.

Many of you reading this are familiar with our Fifty Fund, and have even contributed to it. Thank you! I’m happy to report that as this newsletter goes to press we are over 3/4 of our way to our 2012 Fifty Fund goal of $200,000.

Praise the Lord with us for the way He has provided these vital tools for the nations.

Here at LATM, we keep an archive copy of every book we help to publish in a bookcase that sits in my office. It is a visual reminder of what we produce. When I look at that bookcase, I see the fruit of twenty years of

delightful cooperation with international field partners and stateside supporters: 624 book projects in 58 languages, representing over 1.4 million books in print around the world. As you can see, the bookcase is full.

When this ministry started in August of 1992, I had no idea what would be the result twenty years down the road.  Now I’m looking back, and am humbled and oh-so grateful as I think of all the ways the Lord has blessed our efforts over these two decades.

Phil CaseyExecutive Director

Books: Foundational Ministry

We do not want to glorify ourselves: we simply are glad to be conduits of the Lord’s provision for these heart language resources that allow people to find, follow and serve our Lord Jesus.

Twenty years is a milestone, but it’s not a stopping place. The requests keep coming in from our field partners. We have completed 28 projects so far in 2012, but we’ve added 50 new requests in that time! The need continues to be great for Bible based, Christ centered, culturally relevant books in the languages of the peoples of the world. And as long as the Lord gives us reason to continue, we intend to help meet those needs. Let’s fill another bookcase!

Number of completed projects each year. Our 2012 goal is 12 Book Club projects and 50 projects through the Fifty Fund. So far, 6 Book Club proj-ects and 22 Fifty Fund projects have been completed, for a total of 28 projects.

A forwardLook at ourMinistryThe Fifty Fund 2012 initiative is a reachable and even inspir-ing look at LATM. It springs from our 2012 Publishing Plan of about 100 projects our international partners believe can be completed this year. We hope to complete at least 50 of those projects this year through the Fifty Fund: 50 Titles. 100,000 Books. 200,000 Dollars.

Looking back at all that has been accomplished through our 20 years of ministry is impressive. And it confirms the power and effectiveness of Christian publishing in heart languages. Our long and significant ministry shows that LATM is a worthy spiritual investment that has helped the church grow and ex-tend around the world. Now with the Fifty Fund, we can take a look at LATM's ministry for today and tomorrow. We have always had information about our current and future projects of course, but until the Fifty Fund it was hard to express the wide and deep impact of what LATM is doing and is about to do.

The Fifty Fund shows our direction and strategy, and our af-firmative response to the need for Christ-centered books with solid Bible content. Because the Publishing Plan includes lan-guages, titles, numbers of books, and needed contributions, churches and individuals can explore affinities all year long between their interests and connections, and the people on the list who need particular books for their ministries. With the Fifty Fund, we will be able to stay ahead of project needs in-stead of trying to raise funds after the needs arise. It makes good ministry sense because it will shorten the time it takes to get the tools into workers' hands.

We are asking for significant contributions beyond regular giv-ing to the General Fund or to the Book Club. Gifts to the Fifty Fund would be special offerings ranging from $100 to $50,000, but of course every gift is significant. The average contribution still needed for each book on the Publishing Plan is $2.40, so you can see how far a contribution will go towards the goal of 100,000 books.

"WE ARE LOSING THE NEXT GENERATION"

Long after communism collapsed, little has changed in how pub-lic schools teach Science in the former Soviet Union. Governments maintain a monopoly on school education. Education officials deprive parents of the right to influence their children's studies. Churches strive to give children a Biblical worldview, but public schools un-dermine their efforts. Private school education is marginalized, and home schooling is not allowed. Only "official" textbooks are published, which present Science from an atheistic, materialistic, hu-manistic, Darwinian view. Effectively, every school science teacher becomes a missionary of atheism. The situation undermines years of achievements in evangelism. Sergei Golovin has a solution. He is LATM field partner and president of The Christian Center for Science and Apologet-ics in Simferopol, Ukraine, and he wants to publish 15 science textbooks in Russian as part of a comprehensive program of Science texts that present a creationist perspective. Listen to his passion for the project: The future of the next generation of post-com-munist society is at stake. I would like to share something the Lord has put on my heart, and to ask you to consider with prayer if He calls you to take part with us in these strategically important projects. Christian teachers and parents are deeply concerned about the great need in our culture for Christian textbooks on Science that could help Christians of the post-communist world to root themselves and their children in a Biblical worldview. We want to challenge that unlimited atheistic control in the education of children. We should supply Christian children and their parents with alternative textbooks that can:

1. reveal the fallacies of atheism, and counter the post-com-munism system of education2. equip Christian parents for their responsibility to shape their children's worldview

3. help Christian teachers revise their science lessons in public schools4. help Christian children be better students at school5. equip them all to be missionaries to other students and teachers in their schools.

The project involves several components:

Physics of God's Creation – The first Christian textbook on Phys-ics being written originally in Russian, in eight stages, to be finally published as one volume.

God's Design for Science – Translation of a series of 12 textbooks by Debbie and Richard Lawrence from Answers in Gen-esis.

Exploring Creation with General Science – The first comprehensive Christian textbook on Science to be published in Russian, by Dr. Jay L. Wile of Apologia Educational Ministries, Inc., that will teach students the Christian nature and history of scien-tific principles and methods.

Unlocking the Mysteries of Creation – Dennis R. Petersen's illustrated handbook of evidences for Creation, most of which are unknown to Russian readers.

It is an enormous task, but five volumes of the textbook series have been completed already (LATM helped fund four of them, and Ukrainian Christians funded the first one because they saw the proj-ect's importance). Two parts of the Physics textbook have been writ-ten and published individually for field review. Unlocking the Myster-ies of Creation is finished and printed.

The project relies on the Lord's provision, of course. Listen again to Sergei's request to con-sider with prayer if He calls you to take part with us in these strategically important projects.

You can check our prog-ress at www.latm.info, but by mid-August, contributions to the Fif-ty Fund 2012 reached $155,000. Twenty-two book projects (35,100 books) had been com-pleted! Please consider making a contribution that will push us closer to the goal of 50 completed projects this year. God will bless your giving to build His kingdom.

31 Projects Completed Since Last World NewsRussianUnlocking theMysteries of CreationDennis R. PetersenThe book is a con-densed encyclopedia on Creation that will spark minds, both young and old, to become more awestruck than ever before by the wondrous works of God. This is not just a "good" book that will be used by a few students or perused by the casual reader and

later discarded. It will take a prominent place on the living room table or bookshelf in any home that takes God's word seriously concerning the evidence for a Bible-based world view. Sergei writes, The secular, post-communist educa-tion system keeps brainwashing people, telling them that the Bible's understanding of the world we live in has nothing to do with the facts of science. This book shows clearly how far those statements are from real-ity. The book perfectly serves all three aspects of our ministry:

INTRODUCING the Truth to skeptics;STRENGTHENING the saints in their confi-dence in the Truth;EQUIPPING God's people to proclaim God's Word effectively.

EXTRA! - On May 25th, we re-ceived an exuberant email from Sergei telling of an amazing thing: All secular publishers in Ukraine must supply sample copies to the State Committee on Information of books they print. From time to time the SCI arranges contests on the publishing quality of the books it receives. This year they have awarded our Unlocking the Myster-

ies of Creation! That is unbelievable: a state institu-tion giving an award to a Christian book! That not only provides good PR for our textbooks, but also opens a lot of doors to public libraries, schools, etc. Praised be the Lord!

SerbianSaving SexTrevor Stammers and Tim DoakVesna Radeka directs the Choose Life crisis preg-nancy center in Novi Sad, Serbia, whose positive influence extends across Europe. In 2009, Vesna requested LATM’s help with a book for her ministry

there. Here is her description of the strategic value of this book: When I first read Saving Sex I was really thrilled. I realized that we can indeed answer all those sensi-tive questions about relationships and sex that teenagers have, with-out sounding weird or outdated. In this book, a team of Christian doctors and youth workers gives

answers to real questions that teenagers have posted on a web site. The information is truthful, with good insights and advice. I started using this book when I was preparing to teach Reproductive Health in high schools, and of course soon enough I started think-ing how valuable it would be to have it in the Serbian language so that students could find answers to the questions that bother them. Last week that became a reality. Thanks to LATM we now have Saving Sex in Serbian! Apart from our work in schools, this book will be an important tool for our work with young clients who come to our Choose Life crisis pregnancy center for a free pregnancy test. All is there in the book. Our job will be just to encourage them to read it!

ConnectingJ. Robert Clinton and Paul D. StanleyTCM’s Czech Field Director Pavel Coufal writes, De-veloping mentoring relationships is so important, yet it is so undeveloped in the Czech Republic! Connect-ing will be a significant book for many pastors who feel like a lonely soldier on the battlefield, and they do not even realize that what they are missing is the mentoring.

FrenchMeet my Friend, the Holy SpiritAlger FitchHaitian Christian Mission founder Etienne Prophete writes, Throughout centuries there has been much confusion about the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the Christian world. This book is designed to dismiss that confusion in the mind of the reader. PolishWhere is God When We Suffer?H. Lynn GardnerTCM Polish Field Director Michal Weremiejewicz writes, God Himself wants us to know where He is in all circumstances. This book is deeply rooted in His

Word and a very useful manual for Polish ministers, Bible students and every Christian.

RussianDinner with SkepticsJeff VinesChristian Center for Science and Apologetics presi-dent Sergei Golovin writes, In post-communist cul-tures where Biblical faith was mocked, this book pro-vides a great model of practical apologetics – giving an answer with gentleness and respect to everyone who asks for the reason for the hope that we have.

The Puzzle of Ancient ManDonald E. ChittickSergei writes, This is an easy to read, yet comprehen-sive overview of significant archaeological findings that do not match the evolutionary idea of man’s origin and development. It demonstrates that only the Bible provides the story that can reconcile all known arti-facts in existence.

By DesignJonathan SarfatiA fresh look at the design argument from a biblical perspective, unashamedly identifying the Designer as the God of the Bible. The book will have a great impact in post-communist countries where people trust sci-ence, but are confused with the evidences it provides.

Commending andDefending Christian FaithH. Lynn GardnerSergei writes, Many good books on Apologetics tell WHAT to answer "to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have" (1 Peter 3). Sometimes in our post-communist cultural setting, those books simply turned arrogant atheists into ar-rogant believers. Gardner’s book gives the WHY and HOW to answer—the very point of Peter’s passage—its proper place.

Creation Club Idea BookConstance H. CrossmanStarting with the Bible, this book leads children in cre-ation activities, crafts, games, and Bible stories. Ser-gei writes, This is the first book of its kind in the former Soviet Union, and will be a great supplement to the Science curricula for developing a Christian worldview in the next generation.

Why Jesus Only?Timofei AlferovBoth LATM and CCSA give high priority to books by national authors written originally in their own lan-guage. Why Jesus Only? is an example of that. Ser-gei writes, This book purposefully deals with issues Russian-speaking national leaders encounter, but that foreign/translated books do not cover properly.

Foundations for Christian Education (reprint)edited by Eleanor Danieland John WadeSergei points out an interesting twist on this one: When we published this book in 2005, only the TCMII students whose studies required it asked for it. But in the last two years, we are getting more and more requests for it! It looks like the Church here is gain-ing sufficient maturity to take responsibility for what and how we teach, and the treasures of wisdom and experience collected in the book are more and more appreciated.

The Books of HistoryJames SmithTranslator Constantine Nazarov says, This is the third book of James Smith we have printed in Russian. Structured well, his books act as a compass for Rus-sian speaking Christians and church leaders.
