AntecedentA noun that refers to a pronoun

• The dog was eating; it got full.

• Even though the party was fun it was crowded.

• More complex sentence were antecedent is unclear:

Susan is Sandra’s best friend. She always tells her everything.

-Who “she” is and who “her” is is not clear.

AntithesisShows clear contrast between two ideas in a parallel structure.

Exact opposite

Examples:

•Success makes men proud; failure makes them wise.

AtmosphereSimilar to mood. It is created by diction, dialogue, setting, and description which inspires the emotional feeling of the work. It also foreshadows events.

•Dark clouds can foreshadow the coming of evil. It can also evoke feelings such as fear or anger.

Examples:•Macbeth: The first act creates a dark and

dismal mood with the three witches, forming the atmosphere of the play.

•A small cafe with a good smell, be lit appropriately, and have just the right level of appropriate music in the background sets a warm and welcoming atmosphere that is calm.
