literary merit

1
Writing is the process of forming written letters, words or sentences to express a message. However, the mechanical act of writing is not enough to produce a good literature. Although the rules of grammar plays an important role in effective writing, a good writer must express his thoughts and ideas in an organized manner to ensure that the reader will accurately understand what the writer means. Since written words are just ought to be read, it is prone to be misconstrued. Unlike spoken words which are affected by the tone and articulation of the speaker, appreciation of a literary work will solely depend on how the reader comprehends the written words. In view of this, it is imperative that a writer must construct his or her work in such a way that his or her idea is precisely conveyed. The literary work must be complete in all its terms when it leaves the writer so that when it reaches the reader, the latter is left with no other interpretation than that of what the writer intends. What separates a good writer from the rest is his or her ability to affect the readers in the exact way as he or she pleases. Any form of writing is capable of moving the reader’s emotions or stimulating the reader’s mind. However, a good literature dictates what the reader should feel or think. It influences the readers to respond in the manner which the writer expects him to. Although the concept of literary merit is subjective, it is still rooted on a common characteristic which is value. I submit that literature is considered valuable when it is able to create an impact to the readers irrespective of its subject. The fact that it has provoked the minds of the readers to think gives it a sense of worth.
