Literacy Year 5 and 6Week beginning 11.05.20
Keeping a diary
• In these unusual times where staying at home in your PJs and seeing your
friends on a Zoom call are the new normal, we may forget that we are living
through historic times.
• Throughout history we have learnt about important events through the diary
writing of some very famous people.
• Now it is your chance to tell your story of live during the Coronavirus
lockdown of Spring 2020.
Famous diarists
• We learnt about The Great Fire of London and The Plague from the diary of Samuel Pepys.
• Anne Frank shared her innermost thoughts with us which helps us to understand what it was like to live through World War 2.
• Adrian Mole shared his opinion of a famous Royal Wedding in the 1980s.
• Even the Wimpy kid can teach us a thing or two!
Your Diary
• You can record your diary in a format that is unique to you. You can explore your experiences in any way you choose but look here for some ideas.

• Your teachers have shared their ideas with you too.
Diary 1 - A recipe for a perfect...
by Mrs. Hogan-Hussein
• It was my daughter
Molly's 18th Birthday last
weekend. I wondered how
on we could make it
special without a big party.
Here is my recipe for a
perfect birthday during
lockdown.

A handful of
presents wrapped
and left on the
doorstep
A dollop of balloons hanging
from the trees in the garden.
A sprinkle of birthday cards plopping
through the letterbox.
A big splash of HAPPY
BIRTHDAY messages and songs
from all your favourite family and
friends.
2 huge helpings of gooey
chocolate cake dusted with
candles flickering in the wind.
100s and 1000s of Happy
Birthdays from the neighbours
and friends passing by on their
bikes.
Now take all of these and mix together with some
smiles, laughter and distant kisses.
Bake in your own home for 24 hours
And you will have
THE PERFECT BIRTHDAY IN LOCKDOWN
Diary 2 – being creative with Photographyby Mr Mortimore

• Not everyone wants to write or draw a diary but loads of people love to take photographs. If you have a smartphone, those pictures might pop up as 'memories'. Organise your pictures to show a story of your time at home.
• One of my favourite things to do when I'm not teaching is to take photographs. I mainly like taking them of flowers, bees, butterflies and small things like that.
• If you like the idea of recording what's happening in yours and others' lives through pictures, why not watch this video and make a diary of your Corona Virus through photographs and captions.
"Today is Wednesday. I was finding it hard being always in my flat, so I decided to take
my camera and crystal ball out on my daily exercise - I try to do this every day and it
helps me to feel closer to nature. I tried using a crystal ball to create reflections with
flowers and leaves and it helped me to feel a little more peaceful than I was before I left. I
like how this picture in particular shows the brown leaves through the crystal ball"
Diary 3 - Scrapbook
diary
Just like BB Taylor, Miss Breese has made her own
'scrapbook diary' of the first week we went into
lockdown, including some thoughts, goals, messages
and reflections on what she will do when it’s over.
BB Taylor explains this diary as: a great and creative
way to keep a diary, there are no specific rules on
what you must include and how you present, it is
completely up to you! Words, pictures, a mix of the
two? It is yours to create as you wish!
