LITDS (LOYOLA INTEGRATED TRIBAL DEVELOPMENT SOCIETY)
LITDS is one of the tribal welfare and development society of Jesuits in Andhra Pradesh. It
serves the tribal population who are vulnerable of poverty, hunger and disease. The ultimate
purpose of LITDS is to enable the tribal people to enjoy the fruits of integral development
through various services by the Jesuits in collaboration with other religious staff, lay staff,
animators and teachers in the villages and the hamlets. Since these tribes are victims of
marginalization their settlements are in the interior and remote areas. Hence the tribes of this
area lack all the basic needs. Hence Jesuits have selected this region as field working area to
implement programs in networking with others.
GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION: Katukapalli is 34 kms away from Bhadrachalam.
Bhadrachalm is located at 120 km away from Khammam, in Khammam District. It is
beyond Godavari river. There are eight tibal mandals namely, Wazeedu, Venkatapuram,
Charla, Dummugudem, Bhadrachalam, Kunavaram, V.R. Puram and Chintoor. From the
beginning our operation location is in four mandels namely Chintoor, V.R. Puram,
Kunavaram and Bhadrachalam. This area is covered with hills and thick forest . The
boundaries of these four mandals are Chattrigrah and Orissa in the Eastern direction.
FOUNDATION OF LITDS:
The long cherished dream of Jesuits in Andhra Pradesh to have a Tribal Mission in the forest
of Bhadrachalam came to a reality in 1992. It was started at Eduguralapalli of Chintoor
Mandal, Khammam District, Andhra Pradesh. In 1993 the people of Katukapalli gave 9
acres of land and invited the team to begin the various developmental activities there. Thus
Loyola Integrated Tribal Development Society (LITDS) was shifted to Katukapalli. Since
then is a collaborative venture by the Jesuits of Andhra Province.
VISION “TOGETHER WITH TRIBES TOWARDS LIBERATION”
MISSION EDUCATION, HEALTH, EMPOWERMENT AND ENVIRONMENT
PROJECT IMPLEMENTORS: Jesuit Province Society, Hyderabad.
METHOD AND APPROACH: Participatory approach, Involvement of both religious
and the laity, People oriented and people centred, Lay and religious collaboration.
REGISTRATION: Registered as LOYOLA INTEGRATED TRIBAL
DEVELOPMENT SOCIETY (LITDS) REGD. NO. 1601/96
NAME OF THE TRIBES: This area is predominantly inhabited by the Koya, Kudhu Koya
and Konda Reddies. Koyas have settled here long before in the plain area near the road
point. Konda reddies too have migrated from other states and occupied the hilly areas. The
Gothu Koyas are displaced tribes from other states and settled in the interior forest since
they do not get any place near the road point.

Activity 1:
Motivation Parents not take their children along with them for work and
to admit them in the boarding;
This is the very important task of all our team members both Jesuit and non –Jesuits.
Through these efforts we try to relate with the parents, village elders and leaders to give
and to create educational awareness and motivation to them all who are displaced and
settled in the interior forest. It is really a painful experience for all of us to reach to
their door steps. We have reached fifteen hamlets which we have not gone before.
Since we went first time to their villages it was a difficult task for us to build rapport
with them all. However we tried our best to relate to them through our conversation,
awareness songs and cultural programmes by our cultural team. Moreover the
educational co-coordinator Mr Jogaiah, who is a tribal goes to their villages twice in a
week and continues the task of building a good relationship with the displaced, who are
in the interior forest.
Activity 2:
Providing accommodation to the children in the homes
Once the children are motivated we bring them to our main centre LITDS and provide
them a very good accommodation to study and we continue to support and encourage
them in their process of learning by providing all that are necessary for their holistic
growth.
Activity 3: Providing hygienic and nutritious food
We continue to take care of the children’s physical growth by providing hygienic and
nutritious food to all our children in the hostel. To fulfill this objective we have a good
kitchen with stream cooking facility which is hygienic to children’s health and keeps the
kitchen surrounding neat and clean. To give them purified and good water, we have
purified mineral drinking water plant which supplies pure mineral water twenty four
hours a day throughout the year. When children are in the campus they look healthy
and strong because of the nutritious food like rice, dall and variety of grams that we
provide during three meals time every day. Weekly three times a week an egg is given
to a child and once a month we provide them chicken with a fruit. Children are very
happy in the campus due to the variety of food items that they regularly receive in our
campus. By providing good food items the children’s’ health is taken care of very well
and their progress in the physical weights are measured every month.

Activity 4: Providing education for displaced and migrating children
From the single teachers school that we had in the interior forest we brought forty five
students and admitted in the LITDS Bridge school. Once the small children brought to our
campus we teach them Telugu language, which is the language of the Andhra State. Initially
they find difficult to learn Telugu since they have migrated from other state. But slowly
through the encouragement and appreciation from the teachers they learn to speak and write.
We have two teachers in the campus who take care of the small children very well in all their
progress possible. We also admit some students in the government primary school, which is
very closer to our campus. Extra coaching classes and regular monthly tests are conducted to
measure their improvement. Besides there are also students studying from 2nd
class to 6th
class in the government and students study in our Arrupe High School in our campus. Our
staff members in the campus are professionally qualified to teach and continue to offer
quality education with dedicated effort. We have comfortable class rooms with all the desks
and benches. Special classes and tests are conducted regularly to the weaker students to
improve their standard of their learning. We continue to assess the students‟ progress by
conducting various tests and their academic progress card is maintained in our office. The
strength and particulars of our students are as follows:
a) Relationship with Teachers:
(There is a healthy relation developed among the teachers and students)
Student and teacher relationship is very important for a student to grow integrally in their
lives. One cannot easily forget their gurus, who have imparted a lot of sound values along
with sound education. Besides the values and education, it is the relationship with the
teacher remains forever and the good relationship is not easily forgotten both by a teacher
and by a student. In our campus the good relationship between a teacher and a student
becomes as a sacred bond and this remains forever. Due to this good relationship good
leaning takes place and due to this the teachers find easy to impart discipline, knowledge and
skills. Through one to conversation a teacher could know the students talents, strengthens
and limitations.
b) Computer Learning:
Our students from 6th
standard are introduced to computer skills. A well
furnished computer lab with a qualified teacher our student‟s every day excel in computing
skills. This ongoing training makes them to become more confident and takes away the fear
of computer. Mrs. Bhanu, a qualified teacher monitors their learning and teaches them the
necessary skills and instills in them the importance of learning computer skills.
(A well furnished room for learning and a teacher to impart computer skills to the students)
C) Capacity Building:

We take initiative to nurture the students in skill formation. Skills like public
speech, handwriting, essay writing, drawing, etc. are constantly taught to our children.
The resource persons do help in this area to develop the hidden talents among the
students. Along with these the students are given motivational training to persevere and
excel in their academic matters.
E) Achievement of the students:
This academic year was really a blessing to all of us. The efforts of our students and
constant support of teachers brought 100% results in 10th
standard. The photograph of

Activity 6: Conducting extracurricular activities for the children for their physical,
social and psychological growth
Extracurricular activities are conducted regularly for the children physical, social and
psychological growth. Students long for these kind of activities in the campus and they
do participate with a lot of eagerness and enthusiasm. We do believe these activities
make the students physically fit, psychologically happy and socially united with each
other and culture.
A)SPORTS & GAMES:
Our students participated in inter-school sports meet in Chintoor on January 4th
. Our well
trained students played volley ball, Khabadi, Kho-kho etc. We are happy that our players

March 5th
. It was a good opportunity to all our
students to know their basic right to live and to get
education. It was an interactive session and the
students active participation was very good.
E) ORIENTATION TO THE STAFF:
If one knows his/ her destination, he/ she is sure to reach the target with
success and with lot of happiness in the heart. There was a constant orientation given to our
teachers to set them on right track. Because working in a team needs a lot of co operation
among the teacher. That is why we give constants orientation on different topics. The effect
of these sessions are very well observed among the students positively

The depth of these poor people happiness is „ONENESS. „This keeps them
alive, when they come in celebration of their festival. Through these festivals they worship
their unseen God, who is the constant protector. We the LITDS have organized the cultural
festival for all the tribes on February 3rd
.
This is the cultural festival conducted in our school
It is a good
opportunity
to participate
in the festival
Picnic:
It was a great privilege for all our students to spend a day out with one another. On 10th
April
we went for a picnic to Mothugudem, which is 80 kms away from our place. It was really a
good and thrilling experience to some of our students since they got in to the bus for the first
time.
Activity 7: Conducting single teacher’s school in 10 Gothu Koya Villages (the tribes
migrated from Chattisgarah)
To fulfill this task we have identified ten Gothi Koya villages that are inside the forest.
These tribes migrated from the Chattisgrarah, the neighbouring state of Andhra
Pradesh. These have migrated due to various problems and they like to settle only in
the interior forest. These families lack in electricity, road, drinking water etc . Since
they are migrants the government of Andhra Pradesh doesn’t take any initiatives to
provide them with basic facilities. Hence the children in their families are malnourished
due to lack of healthy diet and sickness is very rampant due to poor sanitation and
surroundings. In such places we have focused our attention to strengthen the displaced
community through education of the small children, who are between 3 to 5 years.
The Koya teachers are appointed to teach in their language. All the teachers have to
travel from the nearby villages and they continue to impart basic skills to read and
write.
The single teacher’s school in each village is situated in the middle of their villages.
Weekly five days our teachers work from 9.30 AM to 1.00 PM. whenever the children
are absent from the school the teachers go to their family to interact and motivate the
parents and the children to persevere their learning. The teachers make the children to
feel at home through their informal way of interacting with them . They also use play
way method of learning. Reading and writing materials are given to children. Games
and songs are taught to make their learning interesting. Students regularity is
maintained in the attendance register in each school.
From these schools we encourage the students to join in LITDS, our main centre for
learning. Last year we have joined twenty seven students from different villages.
We have Mr. Jogaiah, the educational co-coordinator who goes around the villages
monitor and motivate the school children, parents and the teachers. He also interacts
with the village elders, leaders and the parents for constructive growth of the children
especially by giving them education and recreational facilities. We also have a cluster
volunteer Mrs. Sridevi, who is a tribe and has a lot of leadership qualities. He
regularly co-ordinates five villages and helps the tribes to go to the government offices
to get old age and widow pension, ration card, ration of rice, oil and dall etc.

Description of Activities Implementation:
Activity 1: Dispensary at the centre:
We are extremely grateful to your valuable financial assistance to help the heath of
the three groups of tribals namely Koyas, Khudu Koyas and Kond Reddies. Since
our dispensary is situated at the centre of these tribes they feel easy to approach
our centre for any medical aid. Our two professionally qualified nurses namely Sr.
Lilly and Miss. Janaki continue to offer their generous help to take care of the sick
and to keep them good health. Since the sick have greater confidence in us any
approach us even at midnight for any emergency. We are happy that our health
centre continuous this valuable service to cure most of the diseases . Here are the
details of our service in our dispensary
Sr. Lilly on 13.06.‟13 treated Mr.
Vade Nagarju, who fell down from an
auto while he was traveling in that.
Our nurse gave him the first aid and
him all the medicines possible to
completely to cure his wounds.
Miss. Gangamma from vengtapuram constantly used to fall due to fits.
She was brought from her interior village unconsciously to get medical treatment.
We have consulted with Dr. Somiah in the town and did all the test possible. She is
suggested by the doctor to continue the medicine for one year.
Sonde Somiah met with an road accident on 08.08.13, while he was traveling on a
two wheeler. There were multiple injuries on his body and a fracture. Our nurses
gave him first aid and we have helped him to consult a orthopedist in the town.
S. Ramu fell down from the tree and there was a head injury. He was brought to our
health centre on 28.08.’13 with much bleeding and our nurse attended to his need
and gave medicine till he was cured completely.
What a surprise ! Two men carried a sick lady to our health centre from
Vethrugudem which is situated in the interior forest. Mrs. Boyamma the sick remained
in our dispensary for three days until she was brought to the normal condition. Miss.
Janaki, our nurse sent her home with all the medicines that she was suppose to take for
a week.
2.Our Mobile Clinic:
Our Mobile service continues to serve the area, where the displaced
tribes are settled in the interior forest. It is very pathetic and horrible
to see their surroundings and the environment that they live without the
basic facilities like proper house to live in, contaminated drinking water
that they drink and the surroundings are unhygienic due to cattle that
they have for their survival. Due to all these reasons they get the various
sicknesses. Our service is to reach the interior area where the
government health officers and nurses are not able to reach. Sr. Lilly
and a helper continue to serve the sick tribes in the interior forest with
smile on their faces. The details of our mobile service is mentioned in
the below:
Sr. Lilly giving medicine to the
patients in PavuraLanka, a village in
the interior forest. She regularly visits
this village on every Monday
Our nurse in Vankagudem is distributing medicine along with her helper. She goes to
this village on every Saturday along with Mrs. Sridevi to take care of the sick.
Our medical help reaches the small
babies in the interior forest, who are
unable to come to our centre. Our
nurse offer them good medicine ,
Syrup and tonics.
Our medical team in Kothrrru, in the
Kodhu Koya village to take care of the
sick.

This mission work itself is a great challenge to our Jesuits, who are actively involved in the
process of rebuilding the migrant community with love and dedication.
As usual our team members both Jesuit and non- Jesuit staff organized
educational motivational camp in the interior forests. It was a difficult task to the team to
organize this but through the co-operation of village elders and parents we could do this
task in 12 hamlets. Our team members through songs and dances in the tribal language made
the parents and village elders to convince the importance of sending their children either to
the school in their villages or to LITDS in Katukapalli.
Once the parents are motivated they come forward to collaborate with us in our task of
imparting basic study skill method to their children in the interior forests. The villagers also
offer a small place and build a hut for their children‟s learning. This generous act of the
villagers manifests their hidden motive to educate, support in our single-minded attention to
impart education to their children and support their bright future.
It was a challenging task to the team to bring the grown-up boys and girls to our campus.
Parents were very unhappy to send them to away from their home since the children are
either engaged in taking care of infants or helping parents in day today activities of
maintaining their homes. But gradually we could encourage and convince the parents to
send their children away from their homes for their bright future. Once the children reach our
campus they automatically get interested and involved in the process of learning and exhibit
their talents in several activities. This increased parents‟ interest to send their children to our
Arrupe High School, in our campus.
The children along with education get all-round development for their growth in our campus
namely nutritious food and medicine to take care of their good health, games, sports and
extracurricular activities to keep them happy. The dedicated staff continues to offer their
service with generous heart and single- minded mind for the integral development of these
internally displaced tribal children. This gives us a lot joy and contentment to serve more
and more with selfless attitude,
Having given the small children the basic skill of reading and writing we admitted them in
the regular Government Primary School to increase and to promote their level of learning.
But unfortunately the Government School that is closer -by do not function regularly due to
the inadequate staff and the level of students‟ learning is not up to the mark. Hence we
take extra coaching classes to those students either in the evening or during the holidays.
Since the children in our hostel are taken care of very well by us, they are so much
enthusiastic to maintain regularity and cleanliness. We are also happy to notice the students‟
integral growth within a short period of time that this positive growth gives energy to our
staff to always be interested in their development.
It is a challenge to all our staff to motivate all the children in the hamlets in spite of reaching
their door steps. We could get only small number of children both in the interior villages
schools and to our main campus LITDS. This only shows the parents and the elders lack of
conviction and ignorance. It may be a long journey to instill in their minds the importance of
education. In spite of all this we like to continue our mission since we would like to serve
the displaced.
