Good News Is No News?Which do you want first - the good

news or the bad news? KXEZ-FM 100.3is willing to bet their ratings that listen-ers want to hear the good. The station'snew editorial policy is to begin eachnewscast with a "good -news" story.KXEZ news director Tammy Trujilloassures listeners that the station is notignoring major news stories, just trying toprovide something positive to start every-one's day.

This means the KXEZ audience willhear the details about those improvedemployment figures before any reports ofCuban refugees, overflowing prisons andillegal immigration.

The new policy might cause a fewquizzical looks from news stations suchas KNX-AM 1070, which is reaping arich harvest of high ratings and new lis-teners from its gavel -to -gavel coverage ofthe Simpson -Goldman murder trial. Sowhat is "good news," anyway?

SportsTalk Back On KABCAlong with the cancellation of the

World Series and pennant races, mil-lions of dollars and thousands of jobshave been lost. Baseball fans, alreadydisillusioned by the players' exorbitantsalaries, felt betrayed and depressed.

In the radio business, broadcastersscrambled to find programs for time slotsonce filled by baseball games. KABC-AM790, the flagship station of the L.A.Dodgers for the past 21 seasons, broughtback "SportsTalk." At first, the move wastemporary. But as the strike went on,KABC realized the call -in program, host-ed by Steve Edwards and Eric Tracy, had potential. In October,"SportsTalk"officially became part of KABC's regularweekday rotation.

"It's on permanently, which in radiomeans the next three weeks," jokedEdwards, a long-time broadcaster andTV personality."It's up to us to make ita good show and make it last. Thisshow was thrown on the air because ofthe strike. Now it's taken on a life ofits own."

KABC has run the program severaltimes in the past. Prior to the strike,Tracy hosted a Dodgers pre -game showon KABC. Edwards was most recently ontelevision. He hosted AM Los Angeles. This is Edwards' second tenure as a hostof SportsTalk.

"There's some tradition," Edwardssaid. "I did it in 1990 and 1991 while Iwas doing AM Los Angeles on TV. Whenwe came back on [during the strike] peo-ple who had listened to us before calledin saying, 'It's about time.-

Many listeners were going throughbaseball withdrawal during the strike.Edwards and Tracy became like Dr.Laura Schlessinger for Dodgers fans.

"We were sort of like radio thera-pists," Edwards said. "[Baseball] is lifefor these people. They time their lifesaround the games. Now people are basi-cally numbed by it. It's football season."

Edwards stressed that SportsTalk isfor the casual sports fan.

"It's only sports, I always say,"Edwards said. "There has to be humor.Sports is like theatre. There's nobility insports and there's buffoonery. We're notstatistic- driven."

Edwards isn't looking to bang headswith XTRA Sports 690, the area's onlyall -sports talk format station. In fact,he's a fan of XTRA personalties "TheLoose Cannons," Lee "Hacksaw"Hamilton and Jim Rome. But he has toget ratings.

"Those IXTRAj guys do a terrific job,"he said. "We're not really competingwith them because for KABC, if the [rat-ings' are like XTRA's, we're in trouble. Ithink we had like a 3.5 or 4.0 when itwas on in '91.

Super Dui: Can lit Sare Top 40 Radio?BY SANDY WELLS

Rick Dees is spearheading his owncomeback in L.A. radio.

"Without Dees. KIIS might not havethe chance to come back to dominance,"said Steve Perun. the seventh programdirector to guide the station since KIIShired Dees.

With 10 Billboard magazinePersonality of the Year awards, 44 consec-utive rating periods at No. 1, a star on theHollywood Walk of Fame, a No. 1 hit thatsold four million copies, acting roles inmajor films, a host gig of late -night net-work TV talk show and a music count-down show heard all over the planet, heseems to be the right guy for the job.

Not that the "Rick Dees in theMorning" show on KIIS-FM and AM everwent away.

"He has created the most compellingshow in the morning for 12 years." Perunsaid. "Rick Dees is an institution in thismarket. I thank God every day that I havea morning show of this caliber."

Vic "The Brick" punches up the a.m. with hard-hitting sports commentary.

Dees is an anomaly in the world ofhigh -profile morning radio personalitiesthese days. In the last few years, "shockjock" talk shows with little or no commit-ment to music have prevailed in themorning -drive rating wars. Yet recent rat-ings show the survivor more than holdinghis own against a formidable array ofcompetitors.

"I can't say which stations have takenour listeners away, but we're going to getthem back," declared Perun, emphasizingthat the station's refocusing efforts won'tbe evident until after the winter ratingscome out.

Of course, Dees' comeback willdepend heavily on the music he plays. Heknows what he wants to play and whathe wants the music industry to deliver.

"Here's what the record companieshave to do for us, and I feel this verystrongly." the veteran jock said. "We needat least three young 20s - mid -20sGeorge Michaels - three white artistsyou can listen to. Michael Bolton, Phil

Collins, Elton John: They're intoanother generation. We need onesfor this generation."However, Dees is dismissiveabout the "grunge" generation."When I go out and talk to peoplein high school and junior highs(my son, Kevin, is in junior high),there's a kind of negative spiritlike: 'I don't think much of ourgeneration: we've been spatupon.' So they kind of dress inthat feeling, which is the grungedress. 'It doesn't matter what Iwear as long as it's ugly.'"I'm finding that it's a fad, justlike clam -diggers, Hula -Hoops,polyester, Nehru jackets and soon. We'll look back some day andremember that guy Cobain thatshot his head off."

Dees was recently honored as Top 40 LocalPersonality of the Year by Billboard magazine.

Resisting the monolithic trend in radio,he continues to juggle hit songs, comicentertainment and information in thatastonishingly smooth mix known as top 40radio. He and his team play about sixsongs every hour during his morning show.

"We can be selective," he said. "Wecan pick Gin Blossoms, Blind Melon andthen throw in 'Holiday' by Madonna. Andyou say, 'God, why would you play thatMadonna song?'

"We sit there in an auditorium withthese people with these dials all hookedup, and the second this Madonna songcomes on, they pin the dial - everyone, women and men."

Discography is a strong point for Rick.Having had his own No.1 hit with thedisco parody "Disco Duck" in 1976, hepossesses an insider's knowledge of whatit takes to make a hit. On top of that isthe research involved in creating his"Weekly Top 40" show, in addition to hisrelationships with those in the recordingindustry.

"We are the only top 40 station in LosAngeles," noted Dees, who is enthusiastic

about the current direction of thestation under Perun."He's a genius. He was theyoungest music director at WLS

j in Chicago at age 20."Dees believes that Perun andmusic director Tracy Austin aremaking the station a '90s KHJ(referring to top 40 -formattedKHJ's dominance of L.A. radio inthe '60s and '70s).It was KHJ (then at 930 AM) thatfirst drew Dees to L.A. in 1980."I was terrified of Los Angeleswhen I first arrived," he said. "Mybig concern was how long will ittake me to learn Spanish."KHJ cut a deal with Dees: an 18-

. month contract, during whichtime the golden boy was expectedto save the station from its contin-ued fall in the ratings. Despite his

best efforts, the top jock could notstem the flight of top 40 listenersto FM radio. KHJ switched to

country music, leaving Dees without ajob, his career in free fall.

Until then, Dees had enjoyed acharmed DJ's life beginning when a friend

Commander Chuck Street navigates the hectichighways and ainvays of L.A.

back in his hometown of Greensboro,N.C. dared him to try out for a local radiostation. He went for it and landed the job, effortlessly establishing a career direc-tion. He majored in TV and radio at theUniversity of North Carolina and fol-lowed the typical route of small andmedium stations before finally capturingthe morning show at WMPS in Memphis.

He and and his wife, Julie Dees, whois a voice-over artist in her own right andregularly contributes material to theshow, managed to hang on by doingvoice-over work. At one point, the DJ wasthe voice that introduced CBS' "60Minutes" every Sunday evening.

Even MTV courted the radio vet."Bob Pittman called me and said,

'We're starting up this music channel, and we'd like you to be our first VI.' "Dees recalled. "Julie and I sat down andprayed about what to do: whether toleave Los Angeles and go to New York. After about a minute I heard this crackle

of a studio talk -back switch and avoice saying, 'You have 10 sec-onds to introduce Duran Duran.'We decided to stay."Shortly after Dees turned downMTV, KIIS-FM offered him themorning show. The stationplanned to introduce the new "hothits" sound. Also called "CHR"for contemporary hit radio, thenew format filled the vacuum leftby the demise of the AM top 40giants across the country.Energetic DJs, lots of contests, upbeat music and frequent repeti-tion of best-selling records char-acterized CHR. Here in L.A., itdidn't take long for Dees to liveup to his promise."It's 9:26 in the morning at KIIS,"Dees announced one typicalmorning in October. "We've got$5,000 for you sometime todaywhen we play 'I'll Make Love toYou' by Boyz II Men and 'There

Remind Me' by Naked Eyesplayed back to back. Wait 'til the

last one's over: then call KIIS for fivethou..." he said, cutting off his mike as"Ordinary World" by Duran Duranbooms over the studio monitors. In thetradition of the top 40 DJ, Dees has pacedhis song introduction to end just beforethe vocal part of the song begins.

It's classic top 40: the constant contestflow, the jingles and aggressive -sounding"voicers" extolling the station's virtues.

Dees is completely at home in thisplayful element. His nice -guy demeanor, almost gentlemanly restraint - contrast-ed with the push -the -limits approach ofsome of his competitors - may accountfor his large following among female lis-teners. He is the consummate profession-al, brightening the day for millions withhis upbeat personality and humor.

During the Duran Duran song, Deestaped a call from a woman named Peggywho asked for a copy of "The O.J.Christmas Album." based on a parody

promotion she heard on KIIS.The ad boasts such classics as"I'm Fleeing in a White Bronco"and "I'll Be Home for Christmasin 2094." She also complainedabout her weight. The top 40 vettold her about the KIIS "Lipo-Lotto" coming up at 9:40.

Paul Joseph, Dees' producerfor 12 years, quickly cued thetape of Peggy's call to the partthat will go on the air in 30 sec-onds.

At 9:42, Dees moved intoanother "bit" called CandidPhone. He called Mary ofRobinson -May department store.Claiming to be a husband whopulled a chest muscle liftingweights while his wife was out, the DJtold Mary that he improvised an ace ban-dage using his wife's Wonder Bra.

"How can I get it off?" he pleaded."You're a woman; you can tell me."

Mary patiently explained that he'llhave to "slip the straps off the shoulderand turn it around."

The radio prankster asked Mary ifshe'd come over and help him get it off.She said she couldn't - not even formoney. Joseph inserted a cartridge andthe sound effect of a whip cracking indi-cated that Rick has freed himself from thebra.

In a manner once common of the greatDJs of the '60s and '70s, Dees handles allthe controls personally. He has alwaysinsisted on this practice. When he firstcame to L.A. in 1980 to work at KHJ, hiscontract stipulated that he "run his ownboard" although the station was a unionshop with engineers paid to operate thecontrols.

Facing the top jock, separated by glass, sits his blonde sidekick, Ellen K, who isalways ready to read the news or tradebarbs with him. To his right is a smallerbooth -sized studio in which Vic "TheBrick" Jacobs announces the sports in hisBrooklyn accent and joins in the comedic

fray. In the air and on the air is KIIS'Metro Traffic reporter Commander ChuckStreet. Producer Joseph stands behindDees, deftly and unobtrusively arrangingthe ads and music for airplay. As a team, they can pull a hit together using the rightcombination of music, effects and soundbites.

A Disco Duck neon sign lights up thewall facing Dees. Every day he is remind-ed of the parody record that sold morethan four million copies, making him ahousehold name 18 years ago during thedisco -crazed '70s. At the time Dees wasthe top morning DJ in Memphis atWMPS.

Without Dees, WMPS soon disap-peared in the ratings. Out of work, hetoured the country performing his hit.Three months later, he went over to therival Memphis top 40 station, WHBQwhich soared to No. 1.

Victories of this caliber, coupled withhis amazing longevity, have earned himthe respect of some of the biggest namesin radio.

"He's very consistent," commentedWestwood One's radio personality CaseyKasem, host of "Casey's Countdown,"Dees' major rival for ratings in the syndi-cated field. "Rick is a real pro, the kind ofcompetitor that enhances radio and

Dees' personal con-cept of success isderived from takingthings a day at a time.

"I never thought pastwhat am I going to dotoday, because when Istart doing that. I getthis butterfly feeling inmy stomach: 'Oh, whatam 1 going to do if myjob goes away?' Butfinally 1 am at this pointas an entertainer: I justlove to perform. Liketoday was the first day Iever got on the air. I

don't think about thefuture."

So far, the future does not includesyndication of his morning program inthe manner of Rush Limbaugh orHoward Stern.

Radio Only magazine noted the valueof Dees' persona in July '94:

"There appears to be a huge hole inthe syndicated morning show landscapefor an entertaining, clean, high -profilepersonality playing adult hits and plentyof managers hunting for just that kind ofshow."

However, there's the logistical problemof originating a national morning showfrom the Pacific time zone.

The entertainer's essential milieu isthat of the local top 40 DI telling localjokes, announcing local weather andtelling the time from the clock on the stu-dio wall.

"I really enjoy playing music, discover-ing new acts," he said. "I think top 40needs to be a little more open-mindedand listen to all the songs."

toddled off with the cash.In a manner once commonplace

among top 40 jocks, Dees establishes astrong identity, talking over the introduc-tion to a song, integrating his personalitywith the music in a positive way.

He honed this ability under the direc-tion of legendary top 40 programmer BillDrake at WHBQ in the '70s. By thenDrake was already familiar to radio folkas the guy who had changed top 40 radioback in 1965 at KHJ. His idea was tomake "the station the star," cut back oncommercials, DJ chatter and create a con-sistent station sound.

"Bill Drake was an absolute genius,"Dees said. "I still use a lot of the formaticelements we used at WHBQ"

KIIS is a part of Dees."Every successful music station has to

have a soul, a kind of rhythm to it," Deessaid with heart. "KIIS is the station thathas captured the rhythm of SouthernCalifornia."

Dees' humility and perspective -allowing his station to be the star- havemade him a full-time local legend andpart-time national star.

Morning Teams Shis Secrets of SuccesBY K,11 I11 GRON ILI

Some of L.A. radio's most successfulmorning personalities revealed thesecrets of keeping their audience enter-tained in the lively session "L.A. in theMorning" at the National Association ofBroadcasters Radio Show in October.

The secrets work because nearly 20percent of L.A.'s listening audience tunesin to one of the panel's morning shows.Moderated by Westwood One's EdSalamon, the panel consisted of the BakaBoyz of KPWR-FM (105.9 FM), BillHandel of KFI-AM (640 AM), Mark andBrian of KLOS-FM (95.5 FM) and Markand Kim of KOST-FM (103.5 FM). Thewell-known personalities explored keyelements of morning radio. Because themorning -drive is the heaviest listeningtime for radio and because advertisingdollars are often determined by thesize of the listening audience, thespeakers are some of the biggest play-ers in the L.A. market, which isextremely competitive.

`We're the onlisten to - tifaang station.'-Nick

25.8 percent of teens, estimate theirpreparation time at four hours permonth. Mark and Kim, L.A.'s longest -running morning team, also subscribe tothe less -prep -is -more school of thought.

"If something is coming up that day,we'll get it produced while we're on theair," Mark Wallengren said.

Kim Amidon added that the teamreads "USA Today" in the studio toprompt current -events chatter wedgedbetween the show's many songs.

"We're music -intensive, so we havetime to preproduce bits." she said.

Mark and Brian never preproduce abit, but spend about four hours aftergoing off the air preparing for upcomingshows.

"There is nothing funnier than laugh-ing together [with the audience] throughthe bit," Brian Phelps said. "We try tohave fun on the road to the punch line, instead of having the punch line be themain gag."

RULE 1: DON'T PREPAREAll the panelists agreed that sounding

spontaneous and contemporary with theday's events amused their audiencesmore than if their remarks were scriptedor preproduced.

"I come in at 5:59 a.m., and we go onat 6," Baka Boyz host Nick Vidal said."Erik [Nick's brother and co -host] isthere at 5:29; he goes on at 5:30. Hemixes live. The only thing we need is therecords we are going to play."

The Baka Boyz, who some call the"teen gods of L.A. because they draw

KF1's on -air production assistant, DickCabeza, spends two to three hours beforethe show, going through wire copy andnewspapers. Because the four-hour pro-gram covers a different issue every hour, host Bill Handel arrives a half-hourbefore airtime.

"We'll have eight to 10 issues we wantto talk about: sometimes it's personal;sometimes it's out of the paper," Cabezasaid.

Handel added his own secret ingredi-ent to stimulate caller input.

"I monologue for the first 10 to 12minutes: make up facts about the issue,"

Westwood One's Ed Salamon and panel members Bill Handel, Brian Phelps,Thompson, Erik and Nick Vidal, Kim Amidon and Mark Wallengren

he said. "So people are constantly say-ing, 'You know, Bill, you don't knowwhat in the hell you arc talking about.' "

Handel pointed out that Cabesa pro-duces topical music bits that are con-structed during the course of the show.

"For example, the other day it wasComing -Out Day," he said. "We puttogether whole musical bits using akaraoke song, using original songs sowhen people called up to come out of thecloset, their names were included in allof the songs."RULE 2: TAKE POT SHOTS ATOTHER SHOWS

KLOS' Mark Thompson reported thatsome listeners are drawn to hosts takingpot shots at other morning shows, a prac-tice that he doesn't appreciate.

"Howard [Stern] came to town andwhenever he goes into a market, hechooses the No. 1 program there and hegoes for the jugular, hopes they die ofAIDS, calls their homes," Thompsonsaid. "Howard came to town talkingabout us. Then Rick Dees began talkingabout Howard; and then Kevin and Beanbegan talking about Rick and Howard;then Howard began talking about Rickand Rick about us: and we're in the mid-dle of it. It's not funny to us to talk aboutthe competition."

But Bill Handel finds this trend amus-ing.

"When KFI went all -talk, KABC, withKen and Bob and Michael Jackson, was

the No. 1 talk station by a long shot, hesaid. "KFI went after KABC's philos hyas a whole, by saying, 'It's a sleepy oldstation,- he said. "I won't do it pers al-ly; I happen to like them. But now PC

is doing it to us. It's done in fun, b theway."RULE 3: APPEAL TO THEAUDIENCE

A key factor to keeping listeners t edin to the program is slanting the hu 'norto the stations' demographics.

Kim Amidon has a good feel for herKOST audience.

"We're your mom's radio station: r ret-ty much female, 60 percent. pretty much25 to 54."

She employs a more humani >ticapproach, without getting into the tradi-tional male -female role that women c'tendevelop on the radio.

"I try to perform as an equal partr er,"she said.

Her cohort, Wallengren has a n orebasic objective.

"Our goal is not to get a complaintcall," he said.

The Baka Boyz enjoy a comfortablerelationship with their audience andhave made peace with the way they aresometimes labeled.

"We're the one you don't want yourkids to listen to - the gang station,"Nick Vidal said. "We chose the ma 'ketno one wanted to take, the young lids, undesirable. We are targeting 18-tc-34

ladies. We have the teens already, butwe're looking for the ladies. We stayaway from negativity, especially forwomen; that's our target."

Although KLOS is a rock 'n' roll sta-tion, "The Mark and Brian Show" doesn'tplay any music for the family types in theaudience. But, according to MarkThompson, the team will take phonecalls from couples having difficulty intheir marriage, or wronged or cheatingspouses. because he says it brings a kindof realism to the show.

His partner added that certain sub-jects are taboo.

"We won't do death humor, [Space'Shuttle jokes, or destroy anyone's digni-ty," Phelps said.

As the Rush Limbaugh flagship sta-tion, KFI draws a conservative audienceof 35- to 54 -year -old adults. In his morn-ing forum, Handel explores heavy issuesin equally heavy-handed style, anapproach that KLOS' Thompson called"anger radio." Handel reported that thisstyle draws a large audience because heexpresses his listeners' intense angryfeelings in their stead, whether or notthey agree with him.

"Everyone who has ever been a mem-ber of the KKK listens to our program,"Handel said. "They love us. I get morewhite sheets sent to us in boxes than youcan imagine."

Handel pushes his callers and listen-ers to the very limit, shamelessly pushingtheir buttons, all in the dubious name ofhumor.

"I get very obnoxious with mycallers," he said. "I call them imbeciles:they call me an a . We yell backand forth. We try to make it reasonablyfunny. We offend everyone we possiblycan. There is no group or subject that wewill not offend. A lady called up andstarted screaming at me because NativeAmericans are not treated fairly; and Isaid, 'How do you know, you're drunkwhen you're talking to me.' "

KOST's Wallengren noted that thepopularity of anger radio may be a "mea-sure for measure" against the constraintsof an overly sensitive social climate.

"There is going to be a backlash aboutthis political correctness," he said."Maybe some of these so-called 'shockshows' are already the beginning of thatbacklash."RULE 4: MAKE A MINT, BUT NOTAT ANY PRICE

Handel gets paid to do productendorsements.

"I charge," he declared. "I make it sopunitive. There are only a couple ofproducts that I will do."

Working the commercial into the con-text of his show is tricky business, butHandel pointed out that the results canhe gratifyingly hilarious.

"I had a Breathasure spot to do, andwe were doing a story about a group ofministers who were praying that light-ning strikes gay people so they die." herecounted. "So I segued right into thecommercial: 'Hi, friends, if you're a min-ister and you're praying that queers die,you have got to talk to God with goodbreath.'

"They [the Breathasure people) calledand all they said was, 'That's a littleharsh.' "

Thomson and Phelps acknowledgedthat there is a heap of cash to be made inthe L.A. market, but that paid endorse-ments really have no place on their show.

"It's more important to have listen-ers," Thompson said. "You can get con-trolled by the people who sponsor you."

Endorsements also play second fiddlewith the KOST morning team.

"We do spots occasionally,"Wallengren said. "I'd rather do some-thing entertaining."

Having been burned once, the Vidalbrothers give their final word on the sub-ject.

"Never again," Nick Vidal said."We don't get paid enough money forthat s

adio's Roadies Ramble on thehdormation Superhighwag

BY KATHY GRONAUThe hot business item in the '90s is

the much -touted "information super-highway." Within the next few years, people will be able to get mind -bog-gling amounts of information andentertainment via computers, cableand telephone connections and newtechnology.

The radio industry, however, feels alittle edgy about cyberspace's Route 66.In October, several panels at theNational Association of BroadcastersRadio Show explored how this emerg-ing technology will impact radio'sfuture and radio's place on the super-highway. Satellite digital audio broad-casting, in particular, would bring 60channels into every community, andseveral communications companieshave applied to the FCC.

Music lovers have already been affect-ed. Digital Music Express provides 30channels of CD -quality music to cablesubscribers 24 hours a day. Subscribersto on-line services can browse throughmusic gossip lines, get up-to-the-minutetour schedules, new album informationand order the latest album from therecording company. Already people payby the minute to get direct access toinformation from on-line databases; it'sfaster and more efficient, without thecommentary.

"Radio is the only mass medium beingdelivered exclusively the old-fashionedway: over the air," commented Tennesseebroadcaster Ken Maness (WJCW/WQUT)at the NAB Radio Show. "That makes itextremely portable and very affordable, allowing radio to be consumed by almostanyone, anywhere, at any time, and atno cost. It does not require the user to

abandon all other activities in order to beinvolved. Will a competitor be able toundermine radio as the medium ofchoice? Does that mean that we're sayingthat radio is not a stakeholder in thesuperhighway? Or as we say in northeastTennessee, radio doesn't have a dog inthe hunt? We do have a dog in the hunt."

Techno-futurist and communicationsprofessor John Abel. Ph.D., executivevice president of NAB, described thedevelopments in digital broadcasting.

"Ht's) what I call multi -media broad-casting, which will allow radio broadcast-ers to move to another level of service, combining a real-time broadcast, as donenow, and other services that arc sent intothe broadcast signal.

"All communication is becoming digi-talized, yet the radio broadcast goes tonon -digital receivers - 1930s technolo-gy. The roadblock is analogue radioreceivers. There are 600 million AM -FMreceivers, and we're going to sell 300 mil-lion of these this year. They are dumbterminals: they have no memory andintelligence in them. You turn it on; youhear what is being broadcast at thatmoment. It has no ability to capturesomething and replay it at another time, unless you use cassettes, and there it islinearly recorded."

Multimedia broadcasting would winover the wire -line competition on thesuperhighway because it is wireless(radio signals travel through the air). The99 percent of the people in the U.S. withradios can receive it, and they can take itwith them wherever they go.

"If we can move that broadcast systemthat is mobile and universal and make ita digital, we are in fat city," Abel said.

He described this new radio.

"When we change to digital broad-casting, the signal would be broadcast toa computer digital receiver," Abel said."The sound would be heard, just like it isnow in real time. But it would include atext version, and it could have an infor-mation button, which would print theinformation out on a LED screen, or onpaper, or store it in some way. A personcould have an auxiliary broadcasting to aPDA, a personal digital assistant, to usein mobile circumstances."

The new type of radio broadcastingwill include multiple services and isalready used commercially in Japan byFM Tokyo's application of high-speedradio broadcast digital service and willbe introduced on a trial basis in Miamibeginning February 1995. Some of theservices in store for listeners include:

Scrolling billboards ("music boards")on which listeners see the name of thesong and artist playing on a radio station

While an ad plays on the radio in realtime, a listener pushes a button on the

a card with information onprices, models, dealers, colors, hours, maps or directions to the nearest dealer.

Coupon radio allows listeners toreceive electronic coupon information onprizes or discounts directly through theradio. A listener interested in the productor service advertised presses a button andautomatically stores the information on a"smart card," a credit card -sized devicecontaining a memory chip. A listener whovisits the store running the radio spotreceives a discount or a prize. By insert-ing the card into a reader device, the dataon the card is instantly displayed andprinted.

While the DI broadcasts music, thescreen shows the name of the song and ofthe DI, the request phone number andconcert information. Listeners can faxrequests.

During the broadcast of a summa-ry news story, the listener pushes a"more -info" button to receive details, such as text about the story, still pho-tos or graphics.

For school -closure data during snow-storms, receivers get updates on particularschools.

A person following several stocks pro-grams a digital receiver attached to thecomputer to find his or her specific stocks, which are displayed on a "pop-up" com-puter screen.

N.Y. Foreign Exchange informationRadio provides listeners with other

companies' products (software, computergames), the way Compuserve or networksdo today.

Traffic in on demandUp-to-date weather informationRadio programs on demandListeners capture information and

interact at their speed and convenienceand then send their communication backto the station through wireless telephone.

The seek/scan functions can be nar-rowed to stop only on stations carrying adesired format, such as talk or country.

Electronic versions of a newspaperThe information superhighway will

completely change the way America doesbusiness. Already newspapers reportdaily about a microprocessor company, aconsumer electronics company and asoftware company venturing down thesuperhighway, attracting investors withsuch buzzwords as: home banking, video -on -demand, virtual reality, CDROM, on-line information network, elec-tronic bulletin hoards, multimedia, fiber-optic network and on-line banking.

Even though the media has been talk-ing about this concept for several years.most people have not absorbed it.

"Never heard of the informationsuperhighway" was the reaction of 58percent of the people questioned nation-wide, as part of a strategic study of themedia by the Eagle Group. Dr. RogerWimmer and Matt Hudson from theEagle Group read some of the commentsabout the information superhighwayfrom their study:

"It's a road they're building betweenN.Y. and L.A."

"That's a stupid question. Everyoneknows you can stop at a rest stop on thehighway and look at a map for informa-tion."

"It's the first source of informationwhen there are street closings or repairs. That's who tells you about them."

"Politicians are trying to interfere withprivate communication companies."

Radio will definitely he a player in thesuper network. FCC Commissioner SusanNess said radio's future role is securedby its local orientation, ability to deliverits audience to advertisers and its entre-preneurial spirit.

"You will not only survive on the info -highway, you will be stars," Ness assuredthe audience of radio pros.

Because the information superhigh-way is so shrouded in mystery for theaverage citizen, expert status is easilyacquired.

"It's fairly easy to be an expert in thisnational information infrastructure," saidBob Schena, president of FutureVision ofAmerica Company. "You really don'thave to know that much. You only haveto he involved for six to eight months, and generally you have to be from out oftown."

A recent Reader's Digest article on thesuperhighway affirmed the everyday per-son's involvement: "Most Americans saythey'd never heard of it, don't know whatit is, but six out of 10 say they're for it."

'Marketplace' Takes theStarch Out of Business NewsBY JASON BORGE

On "Marketplace," Public RadioInternational's daily business news pro-gram. you're bound to hear a word or twoyou've never heard before.

Take "schadenfreude," for instance.Borrowed from German, the term roughlytranslates as "taking pleasure in someone'selse's misfortune" -a pithy expression ofan all -too -common occurrence in the busi-ness world.

But it also says something about"Marketplace's" David Brancaccio, theshow's host and senior editor, who makesa habit of finding fresh ways to relatefamiliar - and unfamiliar - news.

Since joining the 4 -year -old program inJanuary 1993, he has helped popularizethe business side of news, sending"Marketplace" listenership soaring nation-wide. By untangling the knotty world offinance, economics and world politics forthe lay listener, Brancaccio removes thestarch sometimes associated with bothprice indices and public radio - withoutsacrificing content.

" 'Marketplace' is for people who thinkthey hate business news," Brancaccio said."I try to speak for the listener who's not amarket player."

Part of the show's success comes fromits particular niche in American radio. There is nothing quite like it on the dial, either in terms of focus or location. Thehalf-hour show airs from KUSC-FM at 6p.m. and KCRW at 2:30 p.m. in L.A., mak-

ing it the only national news programbroadcast from the West Coast. More thanthree million listeners tune in each week tothe program, which is carried on 270 -pluspublic and Armed Forces Radio stationsaround the world. And the figures aregrowing fast.

Brancaccio noted that some listeners

have detected a California attitude, whichis fine with him. He prefers to think of theshow's distinctive personality as an "out-side -the -beltway attitude." in reference tonational news programs' preponderance ofWashington D.C. and New York City cov-erage.

According to Brancaccio, much of whathappens in the eastern United States andWestern Europe is old news."Marketplace" focuses on the Pacific Rim,which is already in many ways in the van-guard of industry and technology.

"Some people are driven by the Easternnews agenda," he said. "We're not."

A sampling of "Marketplace" confirmsBrancaccio's claim. Although other publicradio news programs such as "MonitorRadio," also distributed by PRI (formerlyAmerican Public Radio), and NPR's

"Morning Edition" regularly cover foreignevents, a great deal of "Marketplace" sto-ries come from locales west of the EasternSeaboard. A typical broadcast featuresnews from places as disparate as Iraq,Haiti, Japan. Tennessee and Oregon.

Perhaps it's ironic that Brancaccio, raised in Maine, is in some ways a productof the Eastern establishment that hedecries. What is more, he spent his yearsabroad mostly around the Atlantic - notthe Pacific - Ocean.

He began his radio career as a teen-ager at WNHB-FM, the radio station ofColby College, where his father was anEnglish professor. He rose fast. At 14 hewas reading news script. By the age of 17,he was an announcer at a local commer-cial station.

In college at WesleyanUniversity. he he added morefodder to his precociouslysolid resume by spendinghis senior year in Ghana. When a coup d'etat eruptedthere, the BBC, with whichBrancaccio had made somecontacts during his stay, picked up his copy for abroadcast.

The experience whet hisappetite for more interna-tional news. The only prob-lem was how to get it without relying onserendipity. After college, realizing that itwas difficult to build one's journalismcareer abroad, Brancaccio expanded hisradio vita in the United States. He landeda job as a traffic reporter for WASH -FM inWashington D.C., then moved to SanFrancisco, where he managed the BayArea Metro Traffic bureau, freelanced forthe Voice of America and public radio sta-tions such as KQED-FM, and for a whilewas a weekend DJ for adult album alterna-tive powerhouse KFOG-FM. He even dab-bled in print journalism, writing an articleon arms control that appeared inPsychology Today.

While attending Stanford University'sjournalism school, he decided that he

are dnven commercial media is evi-dent on "Marketplace."

t There is a no-nonsense fin-ishhe

Easternto his style that betrays

news agenda. his debt to traffic reporting, and a low-grade hipness-

We're not ' used selectively-thatpoints to his days as a DJ.Brancaccio shrugs off hisage as merely a possible

asset to the program. Most people don'tever get to see him, he pointed out; and ifhe sounds 44 instead of 34, that's finewith him. He would like to hook as widean age range as possible - "a way tokeep the older listeners and get someyounger people as well," he said.

If, on average, "Marketplace" listenersare not yet as young as its host, they areclearly well-educated. A typical listener, according to Russell, is about 42, with acouple of degrees and scant knowledge ofbusiness and economics. Such demo-graphics allow Brancaccio to sound high-brow when appropriate (he writes much ofhis own script) and to use a vocabularythat perhaps wouldn't sit well with mostcommercial radio listeners. Still, he is care -

wanted to remain in public radio. Then, inJune 1990, he made the crucial decision toleave the security of freelance work in theUnited States to live in England, where hebecame London bureau chief.

When former host Jim Angle left theshow for ABC TV last year, more than ahundred people were considered for thejob. Jim Russell. executive producer of"Marketplace," recalled that Brancacciowas a leading candidate from the start.

"He's very 'radiophonic,' very natural,"Russell said. "For him, radio seems secondnature. He also has very wide living expe-rience. And age was also important to us.We wanted to attract a younger audience. The older listeners think he's cute. Theyounger ones think he's hip."

Brancaccio is young and experi-enced-a coveted combi-nation in any profession.

ful to distinguish gentry from Wall Streetinsiders.

Besides news and stock market num-bers, the show often gives practical advice. On a recent broadcast, for example, listen-ers learned about the best way to negotiatea raise. On another day, they heard a fewtips on the fine art of tipping.

Recently, Brancaccio asked listeners aquestion most people have asked them-selves at one time or other: "If you coulddo anything you wanted and get paid forit, what would you do?" A woman fromNashville gave a tongue-in-cheek on -airresponse. She would be a pie taster/reader,reading all her favorite books and tastingall the food she liked, indefinitely, at agood wage. Another man announced hewould like to listen music of his choice

while he made free long-distance calls tohis friends.

Brancaccio remarked (on the air) thatthe man's dream -job description remindedhim of his own stint as a nighttime DJ.

When privately asked the same ques-tion himself, Brancaccio said that if he hadhis druthers he would stay right where hewas. He described his own job as "prettydarn ideal." Although the money in publicradio is not that good, according toBrancaccio, the editorial freedom andstimulating environment make up for it.

"We can sit there and do stories any-where in the world," the content broad-caster said. "We can go 20 minutes if wewant to. We're spoiled."

A Triple Threat ForBroadcast Vet

BY KEN KRAMERHis resonant voice exudes credibility,

even when what he is saying is incredible."I've recently installed vending machines

in hotels across the country to sell tuxedos,"Gary Owens of KJQI-AM 1260 quipped."Also, my talcum powder ranch in Agoura isbooming."

The witty broadcasting pro has beenwell served by his keen sense of humor. For years his show beamed out of theformer KMPC-AM in Los Angeles. Hewas a cast regular on the old "Laugh -In"show and can claim thousands of com-mercial and cartoon voice-over credits.

But the past few weeks have beenamong the most heady of his life. Theveteran radio and TV entertainer isaccustomed to receiving honors. He's gothis own star on the Hollywood Walk ofFame, been feted 10 times as "The TopRadio Personality in America" and wonmore than 50 Clio awards. But of hismost recent honors, Owens said, "Whatam I doing here with all these peoplehere that I should be watching on TV orhearing on the radio?"

In October, he was inducted into theNational Broadcasters Hall of Famealong with Ronald Reagan, Ted Turner,Larry King, Robert W. Morgan, TheMaguire Sisters and Art Linkletter. Then,

Gary Owensa few weeks later, he flew to Chicago tobe honored for his quips, word-smithingparodies, musical knowledge and celebri-ty interviews. Other inductees thatevening were Garrison Keillor, RedSkelton, George Burns and Gracie Allen.

"So many of these people I grew uplistening to as a kid," he said. "It's awful-ly nice to be included along with them."

But there's more. He'll be named tothe National Broadcasters Hall of Fameat its Las Vegas convention in April.

"I'm thrilled," Owens said. "I'vepinched myself so often I'm sore. So nowI'm pinching other people."

A I iille Togellierness

Goes a Lonci WayBY COLLEEN GIBBS

Married morning co -hosts Melissa andJim Sharpe of Star 98.7 made their net-work TV debut in late October onKNBC's "The Marilu Show." In a segmenttitled "Adam's Rib," host Marilu Rennerqueried the Sharpes. L.A.'s only marriedFM hosts, about the ups and downs ofworking with one's spouse.

"I once read an article stating that mostcouples don't even spend three hourstogether each day." Melissa said. "Jim andI arc lucky if we get three hours apart."

The two revealed that, even thoughthey take vacations together, they floutcarpool convention and drive separatelyto the studio, in addition to pursuingother individual interests.

"I'll ask Melissa what she wants to dothis weekend and she says, 'Get awayfrom you!' " Jim Sharpe said.

But TV appearances are one thing thatthey enjoy taking on as a couple. Thepair will be featured - not prominently- on the internationally famous"Baywatch," Nov. 28 at 8 p.m. on KCOPChannel 13, an opportunity that fairlybegged for a listener tie-in.

" 'Baywatch' is just littered with beau-tiful people all over the beach, and that

is not reality," Melissa said. "We wantthe viewers to see that not everyone outhere is a Barbie doll."

And so, the "Bad Bodies onBaywatch" contest was born. Jim askedlisteners to call in and describe why theyshould be named "worst body." Listenersclamored to the phones, describingphysiques that were too skinny, too fat,too tall, too anything.

"We ended up with a man who is 370pounds and a woman who is so pale andwhite that she is almost blue." Jim said."They made us look good."

The Sharpes and the winners appearin volleyball tournament crowd scenes.

Offbeat promotions are nothing newto the Sharpes. This is thecouple who labored long andhard to save Spike, the 65 -year -old Maine lobster resid-ing at Malibu's Gladstone'srestaurant. For a whilethere, Spike's fate hung inthe balance, but Jim andMelissa rallied their listen-ers to the cause. Thanks to the "Save SpikeFund," the 12.5 -poundsenior crustacean has a per-manent home in a privateretirement tank atGladstone's.

One -Minute Jesters CourtLaughs and Listeners

BY COLLEEN GIBBSUnlike most professionals in the

broadcast business, radio ad writershope that their listeners have a shortattention span. They're not after thepatient symphony aficionado, the operabuff or the die-hard fan of "In-A-Gadda-da-Vida." Ad creators crave a differenttype of audience.

"Just give me 60 seconds, and I willtry to make you laugh," said Paul Fey ofPaul & Walt Worldwide.

Fey wants more than anything to sur-prise and delight listeners, eliciting a guf-faw, a mirthful nod of recognition, andmost significantly, inspiring them not tochange the station during the commercialbreak.

Fey is one of the wits behind thoseclever radio ads.

"For 60 seconds at a time. I want tobring radio into the foreground of listen-ers' consciousness. In fact, I want peopleto laugh out loud and say, 'Hey, did youhear that?' "

Fey's elaborate ads are certainly theattention -grabbing type. As one half ofthe production company, Paul & WaltWorldwide, which he operates withpartner Walt Jaschek, Fey isone of the guilty prankstersbehind memorable spots forMiller Genuine Draft,Southwestern Bell MobileSystems, GM Parts and BudLight.

In a spot for Bud, the listeneris sucked into the mind of a nar-rator who describes his eerie,Twilight -Zone -type surroundings.

"I was in a room with curvedwalls and only a dim light at thetop," the ad begins, accompaniedby cavernous sound effects. After55 more seconds of dramatic depic-

tion, the listener realizes that the narratoris a Bud Light beer.

In addition to grabbing attention, Paul& Walt ads earned a lion's share ofindustry awards - nearly 400 of them, including five 011ies (the Oscars of the adworld). Fey calls this kind of success"world -class advertising" and defines itas commercials on par with the very bestradio comedy or drama.

Fey's criteria for great radio is high.He grew up with his ear glued to thestereo, devouring and digesting thou-sands of hours of classic Monty Pythonskits. This influence is apparent in thehyperbolically silly but highly polishedspots that evoke preposterous visualtableaux.

"Like really great radio, a great adsucceeds despite the fact that you can'tfall back on a visual, as with TV," hesaid. "In fact, really great ads are greatbecause your mind is able to fill in andmake a mental picture many times morevivid than an actual one."

For Paul and Walt. world -class radioads consist of equal measures of timingand talent, liberally spiked with a dare-devil willingness to boldly go where no

ad has gone before. For their radio promotional spots for

Fox's "Star Trek: The Next Generation."the team regularly poked reckless, wickedfun at Captain Jean Luc Picard's stalwart, dignified character. One ad called "We'reShaving our Heads" features zesty testi-monials from "Star Trek" fans who arehappily shaving their heads in a fit of zealover the show's syndication run.

But the real fun begins, according toChris Epting of Italia/Gal Advertising.when clients are willing to laugh at them-selves, their products and even their cus-tomers.

"It's a healthy thing when an advertis-er sort of verbally winks at you," Eptingsaid. "The audience, who is the customer,is in on the humor and sometimes is cari-catured as well."

Epting is probably best known for hisomnipresent CompUSA ads, featuring theultra -deadpan computer genius P.C.Modem and the semi -dim interviewer.Bob. The tight, consistent spots are per-formed talk -show style (complete withjazzy segue music) with P.C. offeringadvice on all things computer.

At the subtle heart of the ads' humoris the not -so -ridiculous assumption thatcomputer paraphernalia and the requi-site jargon would be the subject of a talkshow. In 60 seconds, P.C. makes friendswith, and makes fun of all the computergeeks in the audience with his omni-scient. offhand computerese and hisaridly humorous responses to Bob'sinnocent, lame questions. Not surpris-ingly, the ads have found a cozy nicheamong the news -and -talk set. On KNXAM 1070, for example. CompUSA spotsseem to play nearly as often as the traf-fic updates.

Epting, who also pens radio commer-cials for Smart & Final, First InterstateBank and Shakey's Pizza, values a clientwith a sense of humor above all things.

"It makes my job very enjoyable whena client wants to say, 'What if...?' rightalong with me," he said. "In some spots.

we've been able to break down the'fourth wall' and invite the audience intothe situation."

Case in point is P.C. Modem's habit ofdashing off long, complicated -soundingpieces of computer components availableat CompUSA, to which Bob replies."Wow. Sounds impressive. What is it?"

"I don't know," P.C. shoots back. "It'sin the script."

Fey embraces self -deprecating humorin his projects as well. Some of the adseven ridicule the business of advertising.

For Twentieth Television. a spot for"Doogie Howser. M.D." launches straightinto a rousing, '40s -style big -band num-ber, with Andrews Sisters wannabessinging about the newest dance craze, theDoogie Boogie Woogie. An earnest voice-over apologizes for the elaborate musicalruse, but there really is no new dancecraze, only desperate writers who could-n't find anything else to rhyme with

"It's hip to be able to laugh at your-self," Fey said. "It demonstrates that youarc confident enough to point out weak-nesses. If I have the freedom to allow theconsumer to have foibles, so much thebetter."

Judging by his larger -than -life charac-ters, such as the Smartest Man in theWorld for Smart & Final. Epting appar-ently enjoys this type of freedom too. Buthe injects his own personal brand of self-effacing drollery.

"I have a scenario file, and I keepadding situations I find myself in, likelaughably frustrating episodes at theATM," he said. "I'll have a conversationwith someone, and they will hear it in anad a few weeks later. Kcal life is great rawmaterial."

Sometimes. Fey admits, world -classraw material is quite literally written allover the product.

"The Simpsons" provided Paul & Waltwith one of their most memorable spots, fashioned after a classical poetry readingand featuring the resonant, velvet voice of

Robert Goulet recit-ing the blackboardwritings of youngBart Simpson.

"I will not tradepants with others,"Goulet intones. "Iwill not eat things formoney. I will notXerox my butt."

The list goes on,over a background ofchamber music, fin-ishing with, "I willnot call the principal'Spud Head.' "

"We didn't writethose things," Feysaid. "We just lookedat what Bart is writing at the opening ofeach week's episode, put them togetherand found the most incongruous way topresent it."

While most humorous radio commer-cials don't use well-known celebrities, many of the voices pitching products onthe airwaves arc strangely familiar toeven the most casual radio listener.

"I work with a stable of very talentedprofessionals and usually end up writingwith a certain voice in mind," Epting said.

Epting himself has a voice that is thesilky stuff of late -night radio, a gift whichhe uses to its full advantage duringtedious recording sessions.

"Great take, just great." he warmlyassured the Smartest Man in the World, whose blustery voice had already begunto flag halfway through a day -long Smart& Final assignment. "Let's just have thatlast part one more time."

Epting's regular talent pool includesnames and faces that might not ringhells, but whose voices arc old friends:Jack Riley, Thom Sharp, Chuck McCann,Pat McCormick and Fred Willard. Riley, the voice of P.C. Modem, played the can-tankerous Mr. Carlin on "The BobNewhart Show." His voice is one of thebest-known on radio. The CompUSA ads

The CornpUSA team: recording engineer Jeff Serr. ChrisEpting, Jack Riley ("P.C. Modern") and Thom Sharp ("Bob")

alone have kept him busy for nearly fiveyears.

"I came to Hollywood and started inmovies. Then I did TV. Now I'm doingradio. Pretty soon I'll do vaudeville, thenthe Jewish theater." he deadpanned. "It'sa career in reverse."

Both Italia/Gal and Paul & WaltWorldwide show every evidence of stay-ing on the fast track as well as the laughtrack. Italia/Gal doubled in size in 1993,with an estimated billing of $75 millionfor 1994. Paul & Walt Worldwide shiesaway from handing out billing figures, butboasts an enviable client list of consumergoods and services, TV broadcasters andutility companies.

For both agencies, the business oflaughter is a serious as well as lucrativeone. Both Epting and Fey agree that thekey is finding the humor in any situationand in any product. While this is feasible.amusing and effective, sometimes evenFey has to admit it is not exactly probableor tasteful.

"It is possible to do a wildly humorousspot for a funeral home: it could be donein wonderfully had taste," he saidthoughtfully. "Mind you, I am not sug-gesting this! Some products take them-selves way too seriously."
