Steve Cram opens our Higher Education Gateway

Opening Doors – Higher Education Gateway Unveiled at TyneMet

Since 2005, TyneMet College and the University of Sunderland have been working in partnership to provide Higher Education to the region - inspiring generations of people to advance their prospects through education. Since the partnership began, there have been nearly 4,000 students studying a range of 45 different University of Sunderland HE programmes at TyneMet College.

The collaboration has resulted in strategic growth for both institutions and their newest joint development is the launch of a Higher Education Gateway. The HE Gateway is the latest Partnership Gateway to be opened across the region, intended to be for Higher Education students to access guidance, support and advice including Higher Edu-cation resources to support their chosen programme of study as well as providing a space to display and celebrate the success of former, current and future students.

Opening the event, Steve Cram CBE, Chancellor at the University of Sunderland, delivered an inspirational speech about the value of Higher Education. Steve said: “I’m very proud to be asked to open the Higher Education Part-nership Gateway at TyneMet. Some of our graduates start their studies at a partner college and tell us the support and quality teaching they receive encourages them to progress on their higher education journey - with life changing results.”

Participants at the launch event included longstanding advocate of the College and Chair of Governors, Bill Midgley OBE, who underlined the importance of both Further and Higher Education and their value to society.

University Partnership Liaison Officer, Nicola Hopper said: “The HE Gateway provides students with a friendly sup-portive environment where they can study and socialise. The College provides a great range of facilities and having a dedicated, specialised area for Higher Education highlights the significant, col-laborative efforts of the College and Uni-versity to provide Higher Education to students in a college environment.”

With 100% student satisfaction in the 2014 National Student Survey, TyneMet College gained the top spot in the coun-try for student satisfaction outranking 322 other colleges and universities. This is a reflection of the hard work and com-mitment of the College’s staff but also University staff in supporting and raising the aspirations of our partnership students. Jon Vincent, Principal and Chief Executive, TyneMet College said: “As a Further Education College, the opening of the HE Gateway signifies our passion to go above and beyond in the education stakes – over the years we have worked closely with the University of Sunderland to deliver programmes that have provided people with the opportunity to access countless career routes and ultimately contribute to wider society.”

TyneMet’s Foundation Degrees are awarded by the University of Sunderland and have become a valuable education path for students. The partnership is now in the process of embarking upon new projects that would see the expan-sion of Higher Education STEM related subjects and those equipping individuals with higher level skills for the creative industries.

The HE Gateway is a beacon of achievement for TyneMet College and its partnership with the University of Sun-

derland, demonstrating a dedication to the region in providing quality Higher Education services that offer broad

based learning to support and develop careers. The photograph shows Rob and two Counselling FD students Paula

& Bernie meeting with Steve Cram.

Tony was a counselling lecturer here at TyneMet, his inspirational teaching enthused and sup-

ported student learning for many years. Sadly Tony died after a short battle with cancer at the

young age of 48. It was one of his dying wishes that we hold yearly a memorial lecture in his

name, to bring like minded people together.

This year we had the great pleasure of John Wheeler, presenting ‘Solution Focused Brief Therapy’.

This was an introduction to the underlying assumptions of this radically simple approach to meaningful change, including descriptions of therapeutic tools which can be taken away and used.

John is a UKCP registered Systemic Psychotherapist with 30 years experience of work with chil-dren, young people and adults in CAMHS. John has published over 30 articles and chapters, is a board member of the European Brief Therapy Association and currently works as an independ-ent therapist, supervisor and trainer.

Feedback after the presentation was very positive. We also raised £165 for the Acorns Project who support local children & young people whose lives are affected by domestic violence.

Successful ‘meet the team’, staff and students evening

has confirmed high quality standards

of provision, following its review of

the College in March 2015.

The review, which is the same quality

assurance process that all UK univer-

sities undergo, was carried out by a

team of QAA reviewers who visited

Tyne Metropolitan College and as-

sessed the academic standards, the

quality and enhancement of student

learning opportunities and the quality

of information about learning oppor-

tunities at the College. The final out-

come for every category confirmed

that all expectations of the UK Qual-

ity Code had been met in full. Princi-

pal and Chief Executive at Tyne Met-

ropolitan College, Jon Vincent,

said: “TyneMet is delighted by the

findings of the Quality Assurance

Agency's Higher Education Review.

It is pleasing that QAA has identified

five areas of good practice and par-

ticularly gratifying that they highlight

our engagement with employers in

the design and development of our

courses. This successful review

builds on the outcomes of the 2014

Higher Education National Student

Survey (NSS), which saw TyneMet

The healthy promotion of our coun-

selling community is always at the

forefront of our minds here at

TyneMet. We all enjoyed a successful

‘Meet the team’, staff and students

evening on 14th July 2015. Carmel

and Rob, along with former and cur-

rent TyneMet students met learners

interested in our September Founda-

tion degree in Counselling. We had

some great feedback from the night

and we look forward to working with

our new students this September.

Nicola Hopper and Lindsey Grainger

were also in attendance to give learn-

ers an opportunity to further investi-

gate the benefits of being a

TyneMet / University of Sunderland

student.

Thank you to all our current and

former students who attended to

inspire our future leaners.

Excellence as Standard at

A big congratulations to our Foundation Degree

Year 2 group on reaching the end of your course!

Our second year FD group left us on the first of June 2015. After a challenging, rewarding and enriching time with us we had an

emotional farewell. The group were in high spirits and are looking forward to either their Honours Degree year at the University of

Sunderland or carving a new career in counselling.

Carmel and Rob would like to thank each and every one of our learners for all their efforts and hard work over the past two years.

We wish them all the best with their qualification.

A big congratulations to Patrice and Genevieve

Buee on the birth of their new twins Luca &

Giselle. We are delighted to share with you the great news that

‘Counselling Student of the term’ Patrice Buee and

former FD counselling student, counsellor and lecturer

Genevieve Buee have just become parents again

to the lovely Luca & Giselle. We wish them all well including

big sister Juliette. Patrice also had major surgery recently this

year so we hope that the twins give you all sleep filled nights!

Best wishes from all at TyneMet.

TyneMet.
