List of ships in the Matrix series

This article is about the 'hovercraft' ships shown in thefictional universe of the Matrix series of science fictionfilms, comic books and video games. The Animatrix short film “The Second Renaissance” depicts the war be-tween men and machines which led to the creation of acomputer-generated world known as the Matrix. Humansare shown using technology enabling personal vehicles,like a flying car called Versatran,[1][2] and flying war-ships to hover above surfaces. The “hovercraft” used bythe human resistance, years after the end of the war, seem

to use similar technology for propulsion.Hovercraft are designed to patrol the sewers and tunnelsleft over from the megacities that existed before the Man–Machine war. Their crews attempt to enter the Matrix inorder to locate and free the minds of humans who areready to understand the truth of the artificial reality. Aship’s Operator remains as guide, and prepares crews withnavigation data and by hacking equipment and informa-tion in the form of programs sent directly to them.

Every hovercraft is equipped with a transceiver, used pri-marily to broadcast a pirate carrier signal into the wirelessnetwork that forms the Matrix. This transceiver is also

used to communicate with Zion Control, the security staffmonitoring access into the city docks. Typically, hover-craft do not attempt to contact Zion or other hovercraftwhile on patrol as this could give away their position toSentinels, killing machines that regularly hunt for ships.

Each hovercraft is also equipped with an EMP devicewhich disables any electrical devices in the blast radius.Since this includes the equipment of the hovercraft itself,in order for the EMP to be used the craft must land andits crew cannot be connected to the Matrix. EMP acti-vation switches are placed on the Operator console. Allships are equipped to varying degrees with ballistic gun

turrets (reminiscent of World War II-era bombers, likethe B-29) for close-in point defense against Sentinels, forwhen the EMP-weapon is unavailable or its use undesir-able. The turrets are controlled by proxy at turret controlstations throughout the ships, either with control sticksor by computer interface (touchscreen). They also havemultiple panels on the outside, which give off an electricshock to any machines in close proximity, such as sen-tinels on the hull of the ship.

The hovercrafts of the fleet came in range of sizes. Thesmallest was the Logos, which had a crew of three, whilethe Mjolnir was capable of carrying at least eleven. Crew

members were furnished a basic blue (if First Mate or aregular crew member), gray (if an Operator or a regular

crew member) or red (if captain) tunic to wear as a uni-form while docked at Zion.

The Avatar appears in the Zion Archives. Its lack ofweaponry suggests that its primary function is to trans-port recently freed redpills to Zion. In Hindu philoso-phy, an avatar most commonly refers to the incarnationof a higher being or the Supreme Being (God) onto planetEarth.

2 Brahma

The captain of the Brahma, Kali, is seen at the captain’s

meeting in The Matrix Reloaded , but the ship is nevermentioned during Reloaded or Revolutions . It is part ofCommander Locke’s defense fleet and in the MMORPGThe Matrix Online it is mentioned that the Brahma is de-stroyed so utterly in the sentinel attack that nothing sal-vageable or identifiable remains.

The various Brahma designs seen in the Zion Archives bear no resemblance to any hovercraft actually seen in thefilms. It is possible, however, that the hovercraft resem-bling the Ganesha design seen landed in Bay 6 when theNebuchadnezzar returns to Zion in The Matrix Reloaded is in fact the Brahma as eventually finished.

It is named after Brahma, a Hindu god who is the Creatorin the Hindu trinity, Trimurti. Its captain named afteranother Hindu deity, Kali.

The Blue Dreamer is the mysterious Cypherite flagshipcaptained by Cryptos in The Matrix Online. The name ofthe vessel likely stems from a concatenation of bluepill

and the commonly accepted Cypherite slang which refersto human beings still plugged into the Matrix as dreamers.

In The Matrix Online very little is known about the BlueDreamer , largely due to the nature of the Cypherite or-ganization as one of utmost secrecy and espionage. It is,however, known that Veil became temporary comman-der of the hovercraft and the Cypherite organization afterthe program the Machines used on Cryptos to make himcomply with their orders was removed by Seraph. How-ever, when Cryptos decided to remain a Cypherite, Veilallowed him to reclaim control.

Throughout the storyline of The Matrix Online, there havebeen numerous other Cypherites who have served on theBlue Dreamer .

On Recursion, Viraconrida, the original Cypherite liai-son, was captured by Scanline crew member Theptismand eventually disappeared altogether. During the timeof her disappearance, however, many other liaisons onthe Recursion instance became the target of suspicion andwere subsequently killed or disappeared. Khursun wasthe first of the crew who fell under suspicion, and, afterbeing transferred to another Cypherite ship, a traitorouscrewmate uploaded a virus into his body, and he waskilled. Escondido and Festaneve later met with similarsuspicions, Escondido because he was made official liai-son in Viraconrida’s absence, and Festaneve due to hisunreliability. Escondido disappeared several months af-ter the incident, and Festaneve was eventually convincedto reinsert himself after a Zion operative presented himwith substantial evidence of his crewmates intentions toharm or kill him for failing key objectives. Festaneve’scurrent status is unknown, as it was later revealed thatthe process of reinsertion does not exist. The only mem-bers of the Blue Dreamer to not disappear as a result ofthis incident were Barakoa, who disappeared prior to it,and Kerevola, who remained a lesser-seen member of the

crew. Viraconrida resurfaced eventually but only brieflyto introduce a new liaison team consisting of Exivy, Stan-ten and Rejex.

On Syntax, Tranta and Haigen were brought aboard toassist Itarrot, who had been given the position of liaisonafter the death of the traitor, Diversus. Eventually, Esimejoined the crew as a replacement to Itarrot, who resignedto undertake more important duties in the Real. Thoughhe remained a member of the crew, his duties as a liaison

were passed on to her. Another crew member, Recant,boarded after returning to the Matrix from a period ofinactivity as an operative during the days of the Masked.After presenting Cypherites with a series of tests, he waslocated and entrusted to rejoin the cause by ChloeAnn.He assisted the liaisons whenever the need arose.

Demonax joined the crew temporarily after the depar-ture of Haigen, who was reassigned to the Real alongsideItarrot. Her abrupt departure is rumored to have beendue to health reasons sustained prior to joining the crew.However, Demonax soon resumed operations in the Realand left the Blue Dreamer. After Tranta’s death (dur-

ing a feud with an operative named BloodlustV), Esimeremained the final contact aboard this vessel on the Syn-tax instance. During the final hours before access to theMatrix was cut off by the Machines, several of the crewmembers were seen standing alongside other Cypheritesin Mara. Among them, it is reported, was Itarrot, Haigenand Recant.

On Vector, Sutola took leave from the Blue Dreamer infavor of operations in the Real after having served vigi-lantly for some time. Recruiting Sphectra (another for-mer liaison) to his new hovercraft, they set out on an un-known mission. Their whereabouts are still unknown.

Dreami also eventually departed from the ship but re-mained integral in leading Cypherites against the Red PillCourier campaign organized between Zion and EPN. Af-ter the courier’s final failure, she was seen one last timein the downtown area of Chelsea.

4 Caduceus

The name of the Caduceus comes from the Greek wordcaduceus , which is the symbol of two snakes wrappedaround a winged staff, commonly associated with themessenger of the gods, Hermes. In Reloaded, its cap-tain, Ballard, offers to remain behind and wait for contactfrom the Oracle. While receiving her message, the crew

member Bane was attacked by Smith, who overwrote hismind. During the defense of Zion, Bane/Smith killed theentire crew and used the ship’s EMP to disable at least

five ships (including itself, The Icharus, The Gnosis, andThe Novalis). Bane is the only survivor and is saved bythe Mjolnir .

5 Calappidae

The Calappidae, called the Grey Ghost, is featured in thecomic Broadcast Depth. One of its crew members, Mag-

gie (coincidentally sharing the name of a crew memberon the Mjolnir ), is the mother of two children who de-cide to find her in the Matrix as a birthday present forher. They accidentally alert the Sentinels to the positionof the ship, and its entire crew is killed. The ship re-sembles a crab, and the name is probably taken from thefamily Calappidae.

6 Devildog

• Captain: Fenshire

• First mate: Symmetric

• Pilot: Raddclif

• Other crew: Ricksonol, Covenant, Adesina, Eye-sOnly, Disseminated, Aesiri, Verq, Siindbad

The Devildog is a Mark IV Sentinel Killer Class Gunship.It is outfitted with eight synchronous turrets, two shortrange guns, and two laser targeted heavy impact cannons.It requires a crew of two to operate, and holds up to twelve

crew members comfortably. Modified from the Mark III,it has an enhanced recharge time from igniting an EMP,and the cannonheads have been fitted with a swivel mech-anism to allow for multidirectional fighting. Originallybuilt to handle its own against a squad of Sentinels, thisclass of gunship was still in planning in the last days ofthe war. The HvCFT Devildog is the first of the Mark IVline of Sentinel Killer Class Gunships.

It is one of four Zion ships, along with four EPN ships,that were involved with transferring Commander Lockduring an intense battle with Machine, Cypherite, andMerovingian hovercraft.[3]

It was named after the US Marine Corps slang for a mem-ber of the Marines, “Devildog”. During his bluepill life,Captain Fenshire was once a Marine.

7 Ganesha





The Ganesha appears in a concept design sketch by artistGeorge Hull,[4] and in the Zion Archives. A vessel match-ing the concept design sketch can be seen landed in Bay 6when the Nebuchadnezzar returns to Zion in The Matrix Reloaded , but this hovercraft is actually more likely to bethe Brahma. Presumably, the Ganesha is part of the fleetsent to intercept the invading Sentinels. The ship was notinitially disabled when Bane sets off the EMP, but never-

theless must have been destroyed shortly after. Its namederives from Ganesha, the Hindu god, considered as theremover of obstacles.

8 Gnosis

• Captain: Ice

The Gnosis is referenced in Reloaded . Her crew is fea-tured in Reloaded and Enter the Matrix .

When the Zion ship captains meet within the Matrix,Gnosis crew members Corrupt and Wurm are assigned toguard the door to the meeting place. When Smith arrives“looking for Neo", Corrupt speaks with him. Both Cor-rupt and Wurm warn the captains of the arrival of “the

Feds”, a trio of Matrix Agents.

When the Nebuchadnezzar returns to Zion, Neo is wor-shiped by some residents who believe he has the power tosave them (he is clearly not comfortable with this). Oneelderly woman asks himto watch over her son, Jacob, whoserves aboard the Gnosis . He can not have been shownon screen, however, because the only time a Gnosis crewmember appeared on screen, they were in the Matrix, andJacob must have been a native to Zion, barring the re-mote chance that both he and his mother were redpills(unlikely considering that Morpheus mentioned that theydo not free a mind after a certain age). However, in the

“Enter the Matrix” Game, the player is asked to save Iceand his partner, Jacob, from the Gnosis. This would thenimply to him being a Redpill.

The Gnosis is part of the fleet sent to intercept the invad-ing Sentinels. The ship is disabled when Bane sets off theEMP and subsequently destroyed.

The name of the Gnosis derives from the Greek wordgnosis, meaning knowledge, with reference to themes of

Gnostic Christianity which are evident through the Ma-trix series.[5]

9 Icharus

The Icharus is a ship in the fleet sent to intercept the in-vading sentinels in The Matrix Reloaded . Earlier in thefilm, when the Nebuchadnezzar returns to Zion, and Neois caught by Worshipers, One of them asks him to “Watchover her daughter aboard the Icharus”. However, the shipis disabled when Bane sets off the EMP on the Caduceus ,and the Icharus is subsequently destroyed.

The name of the Icharus derives from Icarus, a characterin Greek mythology. Its captain is named after the Greekhero Ajax the Great.

10 Logos

• Captain: Niobe

The Logos is a hovercraft in Reloaded, Revolutions, andEnter the Matrix . The name is derived from the Greekword Logos which is usually translated into the Englishas word , but has varied meaning in philosophy, analyticalpsychology, and religion.

The smallest vessel in the fleet, it supports a crew com-plement of only three Zion personnel: Niobe, Ghost, andSparks. Built for sheer speed over any other attribute, theLogos has the purpose of relaying urgent information aswell as serving as a carrier for its two pod-born crewmen.Its combat abilities are technically negligible when com-

pared with other ships in the fleet, but Ghost’s skill withits guns allows it to nevertheless be a significant threat toattacking Sentinels.

The Logos is Mark XIV Number 14 and built in 2101.

When Zion’s attack becomes imminent, the Logos crewcoordinates the recall before joining the rest of the fleetin Zion. When the Council inquires of the fate of Mor-pheus and his ship the Nebuchadnezzar , the Logos and the

hovercraft Vigilant search for the Neb, eventually partic-ipating in a skirmish within the Matrix involving Agentsand minions of the Merovingian.

The Logos is later disabled when it is attacked by a mas-sive horde of Sentinels as well as a Sentinel Tow Bomb,necessitating the use of its EMP. As a result, it survivesthe assault, but it is depowered as an unavoidable side ef-fect. The hovercraft Mjolnir finds it shortly, rescuing thecrew of the destroyed Nebuchadnezzar and giving the Lo-

gos a jump-start. Later, Niobe does give the Logos to Neoand Trinity so that they can travel to the Machine city, inan attempt to stop the war with the Machines. The Logos

is rendered inoperable on impact when it crash-lands inthe Machine City.

“Logos” is the Greek word which literally means Wordand refers to the Christian use of it in referring to Jesusas “The Word” - John 1:1.

11 Logos II

The Mariner is featured in the comic, “There are no Flow-ers in the Real World”. It has been attacked by Sentinels

and all but one member of the crew, Rocket, has died.He survives for days without any real food or water, butthen is killed by an agent just before he is found.

13 Mjolnir ("Hammer ")

The largest ship in Zion’s fleet, Mjolnir is the ship thatlocates the crew of the Nebuchadnezzar after their shipis destroyed by a sentinel tow bomb at the end of TheMatrix Reloaded . They have also picked up Bane, whoappears to be the only survivor of the battle between theSentinels and the Zion fleet, but has in fact been taken

over by Smith.Much of The Matrix Revolutions takes place on the Mjol-nir , as against Captain Roland’s better judgment, Niobelets Neo and Trinity (and a stowed-away Bane) take theLogos in an attempt to reach the Machine City.

With the remaining crew of the Nebuchadnezzar and theLogos , the Mjolnir races back to Zion, relying on Niobe’spiloting skills to steer the ship through the narrow me-chanical tunnels. The ship’s position is discovered by alarge group of Sentinels when trying to reach the me-chanical tunnel (the hull scraped a piece of rubble), andthe Sentinels attack. Niobe’s opinion of the ship’s con-

struction is that it 'has a fat ass.', as she commented dur-ing her travel of the mechanical tunnel. Reaching thecity as it is under attack by thousands of sentinels, andwith their communications antenna destroyed, the Mjolnir crash lands in Zion’s dock and sets off its EMP. This de-stroys the attacking sentinels, but as an angry CommanderLock warns Roland and Morpheus, they have also crip-pled the city’s defenses against any subsequent attacks.

This ship’s name is derived from Mjölnir, the hammerof the Norse thunder god, Thor. Because of this, mostcharacters refer to the ship as the Hammer . Except forRoland, all members of the crew have gun-related names:

“Maggie” is short for "magazine" or "Magnum"; AK isnamed after the AK series of assault rifles; Colt is namedafter the Colt line of pistols; and Mauser is named af-ter the Mauser pistol (and possibly rifles). Roland maybe named after the protagonist of The Dark Tower , whowas a gunslinger, or the Roland from the medieval epic LaChanson de Roland , or the Roland surface-to-air missilesystem, or Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner fromthe 1978 Warren Zevon song, or Roland, the King ofPlanet Druidia from Spaceballs or more likely renownedFrench-Canadian gunman Roland Sigfried.[6] Also notethat Charles “The Hammer” was the great grandfather of

the Roland from the medieval Chanson.The Mjolnir’s commissioning plaque reads “Mark XIVNo. 62 Made in the USA Year 2111”.

14 Nabonidus

The Nabonidus is Morpheus’ second ship, following theNebuchadnezzar' s destruction. It is the hovercraft fromwhich he enters the Matrix in the MMORPG The MatrixOnline. Recently, months after his still debated death,the Captain’s beacon of the Nabonidus was traced in theMatrix. A code pulse device set off by the Kid revealed atransparent RSI that resembled Morpheus and appeared

to be in pain, implying that Morpheus is alive and still inpossession of the Nabonidus, hidden somewhere in thereal world.

It was later revealed that the Morpheus RSI making ap-pearances across The Matrix was in fact a simulacrumcreated by The General in hopes of deceiving his follow-ers into thinking he had in fact returned. The General,furious at the fact that his Sim had been discovered, triedto de-activate it, but to his surprise, the Morpheus Sim-ulacrum had taken on a life of its own and turned on itscreator. It refused to submit to The General’s will and abattle between both The General and the Morpheus Sim-

ulacrum ensued. The General was defeated by the Mor-pheus Sim and escaped to the shadows once again. TheMorpheus Sim now resides within The Matrix a free pro-gram because of the faith of Morpheus’s followers. Theprogram itself admitted that it was their faith in him, andthe fact that it didn't want to let them down, that madehim want to fill the shoes of the great captain of Zion. Itis not known if there is any connection between the realMorpheus and the Morpheus Simulacrum.

The name is derived from Nabonidus, the last king of theNeo-Babylonian Empire.

15 Nebuchadnezzar ("Neb")

The dedication plaque on its core read “Mark III No. 11;Made in the USA; Year 2069.”

In The Matrix , the crew of the Nebuchadnezzar is search-

ing for Neo, whom Morpheus believes to be The One.When they find him, he is trained and taken to see theOracle. While returning from the Oracle, Cypher betraysthe crew, gives Morpheus to the Agents, and kills Dozer,Apoc, and Switch, Mouse being already dead. Neo andTrinity manage to save Morpheus from the Agents, af-ter which Neo becomes the One, now being able to seecoding in the Matrix and manipulate it. The ship washeavily damaged when Sentinels invaded the ship whileMorpheus, Trinity and Tank were waiting for Neo to re-turn to the real world through a portal before detonatingthe EMP, disabling the ship and the Sentinels.

In Matrix Reloaded, the ship is seen again. Since theevents of the first film, Tank has died, and Link has re-placed him as operator. After Neo visits the Oracle againand confronts the Smith virus, the crew goes to a restau-rant called Le Vrai and takes the Keymaker from theMerovingian’s captivity. Later that night, with the helpof the crews of the Vigilant and the Logos , and the ex-ile Keymaker, Neo enters the Source and speaks to theArchitect.

The Nebuchadnezzar is destroyed by a Sentinel’s towbomb at the conclusion of Reloaded , after Neo leaves theArchitect and rescues Trinity. The crew escapes before

the ship’s destruction thanks to Neo’s newfound ability toidentify and assume limited control over Sentinel hard-ware using his powers as The One as shown at the conclu-sion of the film. The Sentinel hurls the bomb from outsideEMP range, detonating on contact with Nebuchadnezzar ,The crew are found by the hovercraft Mjolnir very shortlyafter.

The name Nebuchadnezzar is a Biblical reference toNebuchadnezzar II of Babylon, from the Book of Daniel.King Nebuchadnezzar ('the Great') was famous for hisconquests of Israel in Biblical times (specifically Judahand Jerusalem). He is also assumed to have built the

Hanging Gardens of Babylon (one of the lost Seven Won-ders of the Ancient World) for his wife. He has a dreamhe cannot remember but keeps searching for an answer.Morpheus makes reference to this after the Nebuchad-nezzar is destroyed with theline “I have dreamed a dream;but now that dream is gone from me”. Nebuchadnezzar’sdream is found in Daniel 2:1-49.

The Nebuchadnezzar was named after one of the largestsized bottles used in wine production. While writing theMatrix, the Wachowski siblings asked about the name ofthe giant display bottle of Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin atthe cafe they frequented in Chicago. The bottle was a

"nebuchadnezzar.”

Its name comes from Novalis, an 18th-century Germannovelist and poet.

Novalis II , Refitted Pacer Class Hovercraft,designated 227. Novalis II is our first new hov-ercraft, even if it is one of our old ones...

The war was hard on everyone in Zion, butthe Zion Military took perhaps the hardest hit.With almost every single one of their trainedredpills killed, and almost all of their hover-crafts destroyed, there was a faction within theMilitary that wanted to write off the Matrix en-tirely. Luckily for today’s redpills, an aggres-sive training program began instead – hover-barges were built, redpills recruited, and theMatrix continued to be the center of the bat-tle for the future.

It was soon discovered, however, that an olderstyle of hovercraft was needed. These hov-

ercraft were fast, and stealthy, and most im-portant, they allowed a group of redpills towork independently of Zion without eyes look-ing over their shoulders. With that in mind, theMilitary set out to survey what was left of theirold fleet.

Many hovercrafts, like the Brahma, were de-stroyed so utterly that nothing usable could besalvaged. Others, like the wreckage of the No-valis , were in fairly good shape. The Novalis ’flight-frame was more or less intact. With re-

placement parts already present in Zion, it wassoon up and running. The only question re-mained: who would crew this ship?

Concurrent with the lack of hovercrafts, theZion Military was faced with a shortage oftrained redpills. Most were killed at the end ofthe war, and those who remained were eitherin training or too inexperienced to take com-mand. It was these first days after Neo’s Trucethat Zion faced a crisis of confidence.

Faced with a need to move fast and talk itsway out of most of its problems, Zion mostneeded a person able to handle the pressuresof being the first hovercraft captain after theTruce. This new captain needed to be able totalk when talk was needed, but fight hard whenthe going got tough. With the resurrection ofthe Novalis , now named by her captain Novalis II , came the promotion of a promising youngredpill, Sawayaka

Sawayaka found herself in a unique situation.

Both the Machines and Exiles placed unusualemphasis on her appointment. Considered theforerunner of a new era, Sawayaka and her

crew became more than the first new hover-craft... they became a symbol of the new Zionemerging from war.

Combining the roles of diplomats, soldiers, andeven entertainers, the crew of the Novalis II hasemerged from these critical first months readyto help Zion and humanity find their way.

Neurophyte was infected by a kill code viruswhile inside the Matrix.

At the time, there were nine servers, and each one had adifferent fate for Neurophyte:

• On Regression, Proxy, Iterator, Enumerator, andOutput, she was recovered by Zion and restored to

full health.

• On Linenoise, she was recovered by Zion but diedin the process of extracting the killcode embeddedin her brain.

• On Method, the Machines recovered her and re-stored her to full health, and she became a Machinistoperative as a result.

• On Heuristic and Input, the Machines recovered herand extracted the killcode at the cost of her life.

Vashuo was killed by Toorima when she betrayed Zionand joined the Cypherites. She was captured and put un-der arrest, but was freed by either Gemaskeerd or En-mascarado, two of her fellow Cypherite operatives. Itwas after her escape that she revealed herself as Veil, theController for the Cypherite organization (alongside itsleader, Cryptos, a former Zion captain). At this point,her whereabouts are unknown and she is wanted by allthree organizations.

In the Animatrix film "Final Flight of the Osiris ", this shipdiscovers the Machine army digging down towards Zion.After they are attacked by Sentinels the crewmember Jueenters the Matrix to send a desperate message using anemergency broadcast drop:

This is Thadeus, captain of the Osiris . It is18:03 on 12-14, and I fear this will be our lasttransmission. Less than two hours ago we werepinned between two search units near BZ 2-18. We tried to outrun them on the surfacewhen our sensors went completely berserk. Wedidn't believe what our equipment was tellingus until we ran smack into the middle of it. Anarmy. Their army. It’s massive, hundreds oftimes the size of anything we've fought. Weare under heavy pursuit and have sustained crit-ical damage. We are going to attempt an emer-

gency broadcast drop in the Matrix. After that,all we can do is hope that somehow this diskreaches Zion, and if it does, then it is not toolate.

Just after Jue has dropped this message, the ship is de-stroyed by Sentinels. Its message, however, is retrievedby the Logos with an emergency operation by CaptainNiobe and First Mate Ghost in Enter the Matrix , and Zionis warned of the army.

20 Pequod

The Pequod was mentioned in both “There are no Flow-

ers in the Real World” and “Hunters and Collectors”. Inthe former story, the ship is on a rescue mission to saveRocket, a crew member jacked in aboard the Mariner af-ter all of the other crew members had died. In the latterstory, this ship has been destroyed in a Sentinel attack andthe only surviving member is its captain Flint, who spendsmuch of his time collecting artifacts from the surface tolearn about human history before the Matrix.

The ship’s core reads “Mark III No. 9 Made in the USAYear 2096”. It could possibly be an error, because the

Nebuchadnezzar was Mark III No. 11 and made in theUSA Year 2069. However, Mark 3:9 reads, “And he

spake unto his disciples, that a small ship should waiton him because of the multitude, lest they should thronghim.” The biblical passage indicates a proposed exit Jesus

could make to “rescue” him from the crowd. The bibli-cal passage would be an appropriate derivation for “Thereare no Flowers in the Real World”, being that the Pe-quod was sent to rescue Rocket. However, if the MarkIII hovercraft series was constructed in 2069, it wouldhave been most likely retired soon after. The 2096 mod-

els might have been something similar or completely un-related. The relation of Mark III between the Nebuchad-nezzar and the Pequod is currently unknown.

The name of the Pequod is a reference to the name ofAhab’s ship in the novel Moby-Dick . “Hunters and Col-lectors” borrows from the novel and even features it in theruins of a surface city. The relationship to a ship calledMariner is a further reference to the novel.

The Polaris is mentioned in the comic “Hunters and Col-lectors”. Nova, the narrator, was a member of its crew.The ship’s name is derived from Polaris (also known asAlpha Ursae Minoris ), the current northern pole star.

The Saltpillar is a Mark XIV (model number 27) smallreconnaissance class hovercraft originally outfitted for the

purpose of scouting the tunnels of the Real for threats tothe city of Zion. In its time, the ship has, however, beenrefitted with stronger plating and armaments, though itretains a great deal of maneuverability. The Saltpillar isalso known as one of the smaller ships in the Zion fleet asfar as crew size is concerned, at one time being occupiedsolely by its captain, Neoteny, and his first mate, Wanzer.The mission of this ship has, since its inception, been theelimination of the Cypherites. The second goal of endingthe war in Zion’s favor was added to the mission statementof the Saltpillar when the Truce was shattered.

The Saltpillar was one of the four Zion hovercraft in-

volved with the transport of ex-Commander Jason Lock,and was the only Zion/EPN coalition hovercraft to be dis-abled during the battle.[3]

The name Saltpillar is derived from the biblical story ofLot, whose wife was turned into a pillar of salt when sheturned to look back at the city of Sodom, which God hadordered them to flee.

24 Scanline

Scanline is an independent crew of informants and datascroungers. Their Motto, “Scan for Truth”, is generallyspoken at the end of any conversation with an operative inthe Matrix, and they spread information about the goingson behind all organizations to anyone willing to listen.Distribution of this information may occur in person, butScanline also sends out transmissions which can be ob-tained via a Scanline Receiver, which crew members willsometimes hand out.

Notably, Strayshot was highly involved in an investigationof Dr. Rajilich’s notes, which culminated in September2007, after several dedicated operatives broke the numer-

ous encryptions on files and gained access to data nodeswhich gave the positions of an exile program known as991.

Theptism, after he was involved with the disappearanceof Cypherite liaison Viraconrida, and was keeping herimprisoned on a downed hoverbarge somewhere in theReal, was captured by the Merovingian liaison, MadHat-tah, and kept locked away in a prison construct.

Additionally, the newest member of Scanline, Trifid, isalso the most recently deceased. Trifid was originallya member of E Pluribus Neo, who was not prominentuntil he defected to the Cypherite cause and became“Maskharah”. After having plans to export weaponscaches through the Matrix foiled by members of the EPluribus Neo organization, Trifid was captured and in-terrogated, only to be rescued later by Scanline, and tobecome one of their crew. Resuming his original handleof Trifid, he was an active member of the crew until theend of the Truce, when his Emergency Jackout Protocolmalfunctioned, and he was gunned-down by EPN liaisonReposco.

25 Shiva

The Shiva appears in the Zion Archives. It can be brieflyseen when the Nebuchadnezzar returns to Zion in TheMatrix Reloaded , landed in Bay 10. Presumably, theShiva is part of the fleet sent to intercept the invadingSentinels. The ship was not initially disabled when Banesets off the EMP, but nevertheless must have been de-stroyed shortly after. Shiva is the third form of God asthe Destroyer, one of the Trimurti (popularly called the“Hindu trinity”).

In Enter the Matrix , Vigilant crew member Axel has beencaptured by Agents. The crew of the Logos happen toturn up at the airport, just as he is being transported, and

they undertake a perilous rescue attempt, Niobe gets himoff of the plane where he lands in the hands of an Agent.Ghost continues to pursue when Axel buckles his seat-belt and careens the car out of control, killing the agent,but severely wounding his leg, which is indicated in TheMatrix Reloaded by his use of a leg brace.

When Morpheus makes his case to the Zion Council thatonly Neo can save them from the oncoming Machine on-slaught, Soren is the first to offer the services of his shipand his crew to Morpheus’s plan. The Vigilant crew isassigned the task of hacking into the city’s power grid todisable the security systems of the Source building.

As Soren and his team make their way to the controlroom, in the real world, a group of sentinels has locatedthe Vigilant . The sentinels fire a tow bombat the ship, andas Axel and Jax rush to take action, a walkway collapses(weakened earlier when Axel’s limp dislocates one sideof the rail), causing Axel to fall, and a sharp prong fromthe walkway to impale Jax. The bomb hits the ship andexplodes, killing all on board. Inside the Matrix, Sorenand his crew collapse as their real-world bodies die.

27 Vishnu

The Vishnu appears in a concept design sketch by artistGeorge Hull,[7] and in the Zion Archives. It can be

briefly seen when the Nebuchadnezzar returns to Zion inThe Matrix Reloaded , landed in Bay 5. Presumably, theVishnu is part of the fleet sent to intercept the invadingSentinels. The ship was not initially disabled when Banesets off the EMP, but nevertheless must have been de-stroyed shortly after. The ship’s name is derived fromVishnu, the second form of God as the Preserver in theTrimurti.

28 Unnamed ships

There are five unnamed ships included in The Matrix Comics and one from The Animatrix . One is a ship usedfor carrying potentials and is unnamed. Another crashed

in the fetus fields, and only one of its crew members sur-vived. He found a strange man who knew nothing of theMatrix but was convinced that the fetus harvesters weredragons. A third was stolen by a group of rebels who at-tracted agents for the thrill of it and were not allied withZion. The fourth ship was used to destroy money that had

a virus attached to it and the fifth and final unnamed shipwas used by a crew that saved a girl who could changeher residual self-image. The fifth ship from The Anima-trix was featured in Program.
